Chapter 37

____________________________________

____________________________________

Hey," Kinsey grunts out as the ball makes a slapping sound against the palm of her hand as it lands heavy but swiftly into her grip.

James' eyes subtly direct towards the blonde standing almost twenty yards away from him. No words come out of his mouth as his face maintains the same blank expression he's had on since Kinsey picked him up this morning for their routine Saturday morning training at the high school field. The brunette barely uttered words besides, 'Hey', 'I'm fine', and various other mumbles throughout the entire car ride to the field, alarming Kinsey all the more.

Kinsey can understand why he is still hurt by what she said and that is the main reason why she wanted to come out to practice in the first place. To play the game they both love.

Of course, she was surprised once he ultimately hopped into her car after she blew up his phone with almost thirty calls and texts but she knew that he couldn't say no to her persistent ass. If there's one thing Kinsey is proud of about herself is her persistence.

The fact of the matter is that Kinsey simply wants to be back in her best friend's good graces because the truth is, she doesn't seem to feel right when they don't talk. James has always been there for her and feeling as though she can't talk to him leaves her with an unsettling heavy feeling in her heart.

And, that is why they are out here. Kinsey wants to fix everything, but by the looks of things, it doesn't seem to be that easy with the six-foot-tall boy staring apathetically at her after being out here for almost an hour.

Kinsey deeply sighs and shakes her head, refusing to toss the ball back but instead sitting it on her waist, wedging it in with her wrist, "You can't keep ignoring me."

"I'm not ignoring you. I'm here, aren't I?" James replies with a slight frown present. His eyes looking a little sunken as well as Kinsey takes a closer look at the boy's facial features from her distance.

Kinsey gives him a deadpan expression, "Really? You're gonna be like that. Y'know, you're really acting like a little bitch," Kinsey seethes without thinking, allowing her unbridled annoyance consume her.

James's eyes immediately widen in initial surprise but then his brow raises once processing that this is coming from Kinsey.

Fuck, I'm never good at this apology shit. Kinsey has never been good at words and this outburst right here is a prime example of that. What she meant to relay was, 'I can't help the way you're looking at me because it makes me feel like a shitty person and my bitchass can't handle that'.

This is why, oftentimes, she resorts to speaking her mind unapologetically, with no emotions attached. She doesn't like feeling bad for the shit that comes out of her mouth.

"Okay, seriously," she starts up again, staring directly up into James' eyes, "I'm a complete dick-wad for saying some fucked up shit like that. I wasn't saying it to hurt yo- okay, maybe it was meant to- but I didn't mean to hit you in that spot. I-I just-" Kinsey desperately tries to construct, confusedly looking off to the side. What the fuck am I getting at?

Now, it's James' turn to be confused. His eyes squint as he tries to decipher what the blonde is getting at, but more importantly, he is trying to figure out where this side of Kinsey has come from. Kinsey doesn't apologize.

James, in his continued puzzled state, runs his hands through the sweat-ridden locks hanging over his face. He pulls them back over his head, running his fingers through the rest of the hair as if doing so will help him make sense out of this.

Often times, Kinsey doesn't bother to genuinely apologize for much of anything. She would call James a pussy and he would accept it as is, shame-faced and all, because of the impending fear he holds of losing his best friend.

"When did you get so... soft?" James questions with a sly smirk growing on his face.

Kinsey's freezes in the midst of her frenzy, "What the fuck did you just say?" The blonde spits, almost in offense at such an accusation. Her confident nature coming back in a flash upon attack.

"Kins, what you said yesterday was completely fucked up but I know your dumbass didn't mean it that way. I'll admit, it did hurt... it hurt a lot," James sidetracks huffing out a breath, "but I'll get over it. Sadly, I can't find it in myself to stay mad at you... even though I want to be," James adds, emphasizing his dissatisfaction with being unable to hold his best-friend accountable for her mistakes. It's a sickening cycle that has operated throughout their long friendship, but it's secured Kinsey's presence in his life.

The blonde has never threatened to leave in any way, shape, or form, but James would much rather avoid the risk, considering the people who've done that to him in the past.

James Henderson hasn't always been the charmingly confident and popular individual that he's portrayed all throughout high school. He used to be the secretly insecure boy in middle school that was honestly afraid of losing anyone that cared enough to give him the time of day.

James Loughty was put up for adoption thirteen years ago by, Robert Loughty, his father who was unable to scrape together enough money to take care of the boy after his mother had passed two years earlier. This all went down around the solid age of 4. When he was adopted by the Hendersons around one year later it all seemed so perfect. They were nice, caring, and attentive, but the thoughts and feelings of abandonment continued to linger for the little boy as the years went on. And that's what James continues to struggle with to this day.

For so long, that anyone that's given him the time of day has been Kinsey Scott, his one and only best friend that's stuck by his side. The best-friend that he's seemingly fallen in love with.

Certainly, James loves Kinsey, as a best friend, but part of him hasn't been as fully convinced by such feelings.

Kinsey smiles wholeheartedly at her best-friend before bringing the ball up in her hands and hurling it at him. The ball perfectly spirals into the boy's core, causing him to hunch over momentarily in pain and sudden shock. An odd grunting sound expels from what seems to be the depths of his soul as he crouches over.

"Shit, my bad. I thought you were paying attention but I guess not," Kinsey says, maintaining innocence as a small smile slowly creeps onto her face. Kinsey believes she had to do it since it seemed the two were getting too sentimental. Kinsey hated those gushy, mushy moments because they simply made her cringe. I did what I had to do.

"F-Fuck y-you," James exasperates hunched over while catching his breath.

Kinsey allows herself to fully smile at the human before her.

That's why I love his bitch-ass.

Needless to say, Kinsey loves her best friend as well. You experience so much with someone and you can't help but hold their friendship so dear to your heart. Obviously, Kinsey would never admit that out loud but her friendship with James is one the best things that have happened to her, especially with what she's been through.

"So, you're saying you forgive me?" Kinsey affirms.

"Isn't that what the fuck I said?" James grits through his teeth as he manages to get his body to a more upright position.

"Just needed to make sure," Kinsey smirks before dexterously catching the ball that is angrily hurled messily back at her.

Kinsey gives James a few minutes to recover. She watches the boy impatiently, taking a moment to glance at her nails in a bored manner. I really need to cut them again before the game next week.

"So, how's the application for 'Bama been going?" James asks casually seeming to have fully recovered. Once Kinsey hears this confirmation, she doesn't hesitate to chuck the ball back at him with her fast reflexes. James catches the ball with more urgency, not willing to get the wind knocked out of him again.

Kinsey pauses, looking off the side momentarily, "It's going," she responds slow and uneasy with a slight increase in the pitch of her voice.

"That doesn't sound good," James states, raising his eyes at Kinsey. He knows that the application deadline is cutting real close.

Kinsey huffs, "I know," she briefly pauses before starting up again, "I don't feel like my head is all there."

"Well, you need to get your shit together, soon."

"I know," Kinsey drags in a whining tone, frustrated by herself and her endless persistence with procrastination.

James notices her confidence deflating and immediately steps in his position as best-friend, "Start by figuring out what's been on your mind lately. What's been distracting you the most from getting it done?"

You don't want to know that.

James patiently waits, noticing Kinsey's uncharacteristic uneasiness as her head hangs low and she starts to rub her palms together.

"Kin-,"

Kinsey interrupts, abruptly starting up again as the wheels in her mind churn rapidly, "Okay, I need your advice on something totally unrelated to me." Kinsey furrows her brows, unsure of asking about this.

James tilts his head and narrows his eyes at Kinsey, utterly perplexed by her randomness, "Try me?" he croaks out in a questioning, unsure tone.

Her bright eyes dart at James almost timidly. Is she okay?

"So... what does it mean when you have this weird stomach-swirling feeling whenever a certain person is around you? Like this annoying knot in your stomach that makes you feel all weak and shit but you kind of like it at the same time," Kinsey spurs, eyes not even on James, but off to the side trying to make sure she words it right without giving too much away.

"Kins," James starts by cocking his head off to the side, "Are you crushing on someone?" James insinuates as his lips upturn into an almost devious, teasing smirk.

"Fuck no. I don't crush on people, I just crush them," Kinsey states firmly, eyes dancing around while she sucks on her teeth, adamantly avoiding James' fixed gaze.

"Kins," James chuckles, "First of all, you're asking the wrong person," James states, arrogantly smirking, "And, second of all, why are you asking about this if you're not crushing on someone?" James ends with furrowed brows at his dirty blonde partner-in-crime that can barely stand to look him in the face. "Are you seriously okay?"

"Yes, James, I'm fine. I'm just asking solely for research purposes," Kinsey huffs, strictly accentuating every word.

"Mhmm," James' hums, obviously not believing one word as he raises a brow at her.

"You see," Kinsey starts in an unstable tone, "I-I have this cousin I'm close with, y' know... and he c-can't even speak to a girl without pissing his pants and he, um, asked me for advice about it. But, being the person I am, I don't understand shit like that, so I, um- thought I'd get a guy's perspective on it."

That was bad. You can usually lie better than this.

"Kins, you don't have any cousins. Both of your parents are only children," James blatantly responds, gripping into the ball tightly with his one hand.

Kinsey freezes momentarily before continuing, "Okay, fine. It's a close friend," she covers cooly. Her finger pulling on a loose strand of hair from in front of her face to stuff it behind her ear.

James sighs annoyed at this weird version of Kinsey, "You can just tell me if it's some dude you're trying to impress. That's what friends are for."

Kinsey cringes internally at the statement knowing damn well she isn't trying to impress any guy. "You really think I'm crushing on someone?"

"Those are the basic characteristics of someone that has a crush. That weird stomach feeling is called butterflies, Kinsey," James informs.

"Butterflies? The fuck?" Kinsey questions, squinting her eyes as she evaluates the metaphor. That's so fucking corny.

"Yes, and if you're trying to woo whoever it is, I'd suggest trying to do something that they like," James adds, stomaching down the brief dagger to the heart he received seconds ago upon realizing that his best friend is really crushing on someone. Someone that isn't him. Why does he have to feel this underlying ping of jealousy when it comes to Kinsey? He knows they could never be a thing but it still hurts when he faces the reality.

To further explain Kinsey's confusion with the feeling, the blonde has never been the one to really care for feelings of the sort. Even back when she 'dated' guys in middle school, she was never impressed by most of them, simply seeing it as spending time with a friend. It really did feel that way, considering all of the dates she agreed to go on had something to do with playing sports.

"What if you find what they like to do to be extremely boring?" Kinsey inquires, knowing damn well that she's isn't going to succumb herself to the treacherous world of reading a fucking book for fun.

"Then... maybe, buy them chocolates or some shit. I don't know, Kins. You know I don't know the first thing about this. I'm usually the one that's chased, y' know," James can't help but end the arrogant statement with a smirk as he thinks of all the girls he spent time with within the last week.

"Oh, shut the fuck up," Kinsey snipes, rolling her eyes.

"Then tell me what this is really about?"

The blonde lingers on the thought momentarily, "I-It's nothing, I just had a random thought, nothing major," she shakes off, her mind still seemingly someplace else as she looks out into space. Suddenly, the clash of the pointy end of the football into her upper thigh snaps her right out of that daze.

"Ah, shit," she hisses, instantly consoling her thigh with her hands.

"My bad, I thought you were paying attention but I guess not," James says, stifling a soft chuckle.

Kinsey gives him the finger before she bends down to snatch up the ball at her feet. "Let's head out. I've got someplace to be in a couple."

James nods in accordance making his way over to the bleachers that have their belongings. After taking a few steps, James feels a sudden pat on his behind, causing him to jolt slightly from the impact.

He looks back at the blonde with an evil grin on her face. "I've never felt so violated," he whimpers whilst placing his hand upon his chest in falsified offense.

"Shut up. Let me ask one of the girls you hook up with and find out that your bitchass is into that shit," Kinsey laughs out. The image developing in her mind making her statement all the more hilarious.

James shakes his head as he continues walking over to the benches.

"That's one thing you'll never find out," James teases, walking past the girl over to the benches.

"You make 'em sign non-disclosure agreements or something?"

"No, what the fuck? Is that how lowly you think of me?"James immediately defends turning around to the blonde in slight shock.

Kinsey eventually makes it over to the metal bleachers with a thin layer of sweat covering every part of her skin. Kinsey made it a point not to do as much today since she didn't want to get too tired before picking up Jade for lunch today. They were just going out to lunch but Kinsey has genuinely been anticipating spending more time around the quiet brunette.

James curls the thick strap of his duffel bag over his shoulder and grabs for his water bottle, "Where you headed to?" He casually asks.

Kinsey swallows the water she just squirted into her mouth, "I'm just grabbing lunch with a friend," she replies just as casually. She doesn't know why she didn't just say Jade's name, but a part of her feels it's better not to do so.

James tenses internally, knowing his best friend. He makes it a point to mask his external emotions. I know she's going with that new girl, so why doesn't she just tell me that?

This Jade girl has never left a good taste in James' mouth. He doesn't know what it is. Maybe the all-black clothes or overall, deadly look to her that makes her seem incapable of emotions. There is something about her that James just doesn't trust. What does Kinsey see in her?

"That's cool," James ultimately replies despite the tsunami of thoughts whirring through his mind.

Kinsey notices the awkward tone in the boy's voice and raises her brow at him as she takes another chug of her water bottle. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

Kinsey shrugs at this, taking her best friend's word as truth, at least she wants to believe it is.

_________

"Leave it alone!"

"No."

"Why won't you let me listen to my music in peace?" Kinsey almost whines, trying to keep her eyes on the two-lane asphalt road stripped with two solid yellow lines, while berating the brunette in the passenger seat of her car.

"This shit is depressing. And I thought I was supposed to be the emo one in this friendship," Jade argues while sitting on the edge of the passenger seat with the seatbelt strap pulled behind her back as her fingers randomly press buttons on the touch-screen stereo. She has no idea as to what she's doing but she'll do anything to get Adele off the radio for at least a second.

Don't get her wrong she's had her moments with Adele's songs, but this isn't one of them.

"We're friends now?" Kinsey questions, briefly glancing over at the brunette with a smirk. Her frustration with the brunette interrupting her music just seconds ago disappearing.

"Fuck no," Jade shuts down immediately, focusing an intense squinted glare at the stereo before her, trying to get back to whatever she was doing.

"Do you know what you're doing?"

Jade's eyes wander around momentarily before she eases out an unsure, "Yes?"

Kinsey simply huffs as she stuffs her unoccupied hand under the sleeve covering her driving arm to pacify a quick itch. Unbothered, Kinsey proceeds to allow Jade to fuck around with her stereo. As the brunette continues to struggle, she starts to make the face she only does when caught in deep concentration. A face that Kinsey enjoys observing whenever they're working on the project. The blonde snaps her head over repeatedly, almost every other second, tentatively eyeing the girl in her passenger seat that has her submitting to simp status.

Jade's plumped lips poke out and pucker, almost like she is pouting while she maintains a look of intensity on the rest of her face. Her eyebrows scrunch, her gaze sharpens, and the dimple that usually shows on her left cheek when she smiles becomes stretched out and unapparent.

"You look cute when you make that face," Kinsey lets out, unthinkingly under her breath.

Jade's eyes avert to Kinsey in an instant, dropping her focused, pouty face and replacing it with tightened lips and a deathly glare in response. Kinsey isn't moved by the look one bit as she knows there is no substance behind it, so she simply smiles in Jade's face.

"You still look cute," Kinsey mutters in addition while still looking straight at Jade, before falling into a smirk. She doesn't know what's opened her up to blatantly complimenting the girl that she still isn't sure is gay, but at this point, she doesn't give a fuck. Kinsey Scott says what's on her mind.

Jade's face heats with Kinsey's eyes boring into her while the compliment makes her heart start thumping at a ridiculous pace.

"Shut up and drive before I decide to jump out this window," Jade ridicules before giving up on the stupid stereo and lounging back in her seat, pulling the seatbelt back over her chest and eyes gazing out of the window as they ride down the long stretch of road before them.

"How would I explain to your parents that you decided to jump out of the window of my car? I don't think my insurance covers that."

Jade's eyes don't shift as she stares out the window. "You and your insurance would be fine. They wouldn't care enough to even sue you," she states coldly, eyes still trained on the forest scenery surrounding them as they drive down the street leading to the main road.

They reach the intersection and the light suddenly flashes red. Kinsey doesn't ignore the signal and halts the car, instinctively biting the inside of her lip as she processes Jade's words.

The smirk on her face gradually fades with her eyes fixating on the brunette looking out the window almost at peace with what she just said.

"Why wouldn't they care?" Kinsey asks cautiously watching Jade's face for any sort of reaction.

"Why you want to know?" Jade challenges, turning over to give the blonde a side glance as a lazy smile forms on her face. It's cute that she's pretending to care.

"I don't know."

"Well, since I've decided on not jumping out of this car, I'll satisfy the raging pity you suddenly feel for me by letting you in on a little secret: My parents don't give a solid fuck about me," she whispers the latter in a playful tone with a sarcastic smile splayed across her face as she admits the sad truth for the first time out loud. A piece of her chest feels as though it is caving in as the realization hits her but she doesn't allow her careless facade to falter, nonetheless.

"You know it shouldn't be like that, right?" Kinsey protests sternly as her stare hardens in Jade's direction. It isn't extremely intense as the scrunch between her eyes is only minimal, displaying a sense of worrisome, instead of blatant judgment.

"Well... luckily for me, that's all I know," Jade finishes breathily as she looks off towards the window again.

Kinsey doesn't respond.

"It sounds depressing, right?" Jade spurts lowly amidst their brief moment of silence, turning her head over to the driving blonde's direction. She doesn't get a response as Kinsey seems to hold the same blank expression often noted as being her infamous 'resting bitch face'.

The light turns green and their off once again. The car turning on the main road, holding more homes, stores, and civilization in general. The blonde maintains her stern look but Jade doesn't take it too personally.

Jade has come to learn what that face means now. The face doesn't mean the blonde is angry or annoyed, because you'll know if she is angry or annoyed, but simply a face expressed when various thoughts are in the work. She does this often times when they've been working on their project and they run into an issue that neither of them can figure out the answer to.

"Come on, stop overanalyzing," Jade scoffs, "When did you start caring about me? This isn't how this relationship is supposed to work," Jade plays off in a lighter tone, smiling meekly at the blonde while using her own words against her.

Kinsey's eyes scan over Jade's face before she finds it in her bones to relax after such an intense moment. "So... what you're saying is that we're in a relationship?"

Jade rolls her eyes at the comment, but she can't deny how grateful she is that Kinsey didn't push her for additional elaboration on her fucked up family dynamics. She didn't feel like succumbing anyone to all that mess, especially when she can't seem to truly understand it all herself.

"Stop twisting my words, you ass," Jade ultimately replies, fighting a smile.

"I'm not, they came out of your big mouth. Anyways, we gonna make it official or what, babe?" Kinsey teases, biting her lip as she looks over at the brunette sitting in the passenger seat with a suggestive smirk. Jade's snuggles her head in her arm that's leaning on the small space by the window to mask the blush brewing on her face. Kinsey doesn't notice as her eyes briefly glance at the little bit of cleavage showing in the low-cut v-neck t-shirt the brunette's wearing.

After Jade composers herself, she pulls her face together and tries again to maintain a blank expression on her face before offhandedly stating, "I could never be in a relationship with you."

"Why not?" Kinsey asks, partially offended. Anyone would do anything to date me.

"Because you'd care way more about football than me and I'm not willing to be a side chick for anyone," Jade huffs playfully.

"Nah, that's not completely true. You'd be a close second, though," Kinsey nods with tight lips.

Jade backhands the upper portion of Kinsey's arm that's resting on the center console. The blonde immediately recoils into a chuckle as she barely flinches at the hit.

Kinsey is only driving with her left arm and part of Jade finds her sitting position to be oddly attractive. The way her one hand is propped up driving skillfully and one of her legs is lazily propped up in the seat, almost like she's sitting crisscrossed with one leg.

Kinsey's outfit adds a lot to with the obnoxiously baggy and extremely ripped jeans cuffed loosely at the ends into her sneakers, along with a simple oversized white t-shirt perfectly tucked in at the front of the jeans. Her dirty blonde locks hang loosely, some strands straight and some slightly wavy.

The overall care-free nature that Kinsey exudes is something Jade could only dream of imitating. She truly does it without trying and that's what Jade can't understand. It seems like she has things so easy with how little she has to try in anything. She doesn't even have to try with clothes and she looks good in them.

"So, you're saying you'd give me a chance if I gave up football?" Kinsey inquires, glancing over at Jade.

"Oh shit! Where the fuck did you bring me?" Jade blurts, ignoring Kinsey's question as her eyes widen in amazement at the sight before her. The bright illuminance coming from the combination of the tall, slim street lights and the lights flickering from the various buildings on each side of the car bounce off Jade's hazel orbs almost perfectly. Her bunny-like eyes bulge out in curiosity. The reflection of the grand scene before her being glossily visible in the hazel-brown iris' of her eyes, almost like a mirror.

Kinsey pulls up into the large city-like atmosphere with endless rows of shops, restaurants, and various activities. The bright and creatively distinct signs give each establishment their own vibe just from the outside, while the limestone building aesthetic runs along the various stores making them look uniform.

As they continue to ride through, Jade remains in awe at the miniature city. She's never seen this side of Kingsman Bounty before. To be honest, she hasn't bothered to do much exploring of the city since she had nobody to go to such places with. Her sister would be a viable candidate, but Melanie actually has friends and Jade never wanted to feel like the annoying little sister that followed their older sibling around like a pest.

"You've never been to Rosemary Square?" Kinsey questions as her eyes meander in desperation, trying to find a parking spot. She weaves in out of the small streets that sort of try to mimic the quaint and narrow streets often found in European cities. The brick layers of some roads tremendously adding to that overall aesthetic.

Rosemary Square is the name for this makeshift city atmosphere that was built a couple of years ago as a means of luring more tourism to the small town. It also served as a demarcation point between Kingsman Bounty and its neighboring city, Minglewood.

The intended goal seemed to have been achieved by the looks of it, with the many people that plague its streets every night, even more on the weekends.

"No, I didn't even know this existed," Jade says in wonderment as she continues looking out the window, observing all the city has to offer, visually-speaking, like a kid at Disney World for the first time ever.

"That's cute," Kinsey declares.

"What's cute?"

"The way your eyes are fucking sparkling at this shit like it's Disney. It's not even that big of a deal," Kinsey chuckles off.

Jade shrugs, feeling partially inferior for having not explored much in her life like her peers. Her childhood wasn't filled with fun family trips to really cool places. Instead, the coolest places she's gone in her childhood having been dinner banquets and school field trips.

Kinsey glances over once there is no response. Her head snaps back and forth upon noticing the way Jade's shoulders suddenly slump and the sparkle slowly leaving her eyes as she bows her down at her lap, focusing on her twiddling fingers.

"Hey," Kinsey starts, "I-I didn't mean it like that. I'm just surprised you've never been here, that's all," Kinsey reassures, feeling shitty for making the brunette feel a certain way.

"It's fine. I've just never seen anything like this before. It looks pretty though," Jade confesses, eyes progressively glowing again as she looks out the window at the many people walking around with their friends and partners. Their loud talking and laughter perforating through the thick glass of the window. Some more intimate conversations can be heard. The people strolling by are completely unaware that a stranger can hear their most intimate of confessions. One of those confessions being a conversation between two women and one of them confessing that the pregnancy test she took this morning ended up being positive and she has no idea who the father is. To this, Jade's eyes widen but her inherent interest in finding out what they lady will do had her listening for more, despite trying not to. I think I read something like this in a book once, or maybe I saw it on Maury. Damn, I shouldn't be listening to this, it's not my business.

While Jade is distracted by that, Kinsey takes the opportunity to admire Jade's curiosity and finds her nearly ethereal whenever any degree of light finds its way on her tanned skin. Her doe eyes and soft lips unknowingly hang open in astonishment and wonderment at the place before her, making her all the more charming in Kinsey's eyes. It's insane how pretty she is when she isn't doing shit.

"I'm glad I could be the first person to bring you here," Kinsey inquires cockily as she turns into one parking spot that she luckily managed to find.

Jade snaps out of her daze and gives the blonde a side-glance before scoffing, "You're giving yourself way too much credit."

Kinsey rolls her eyes and abruptly puts the car into park before turning towards the brunette, "Get out of the car, I'm starving."
