Chapter 31

Fuck her.
That's all Jade has to say about the blonde that's been driving her crazy for the past week and a half.
Yes, the two have managed to ignore each other for almost two weeks. Kinsey avoiding Jade by acting as if she never existed and Jade too nervous to approach the stone-cold persona that makes her feel like an annoying pest whenever in her presence.
The past week consisted of the two girls purposely missing each other in the hallways by hiding behind lockers, doors, and people. As well as, rapidly looking the other way when one or the other passed by in close proximity, before longingly looking after them after they've passed.
Today marks the ninth day of Kinsey and Jade's hiatus.
Kinsey lazily sits in her desk as Mrs. Rodriguez lectures. The blonde trying extremely hard to pay attention as a means of distracting herself from thinking about what Jade is up to a couple of desks down. She can ignore the brunette physically, but she can't ignore how much the mere idea of the girl has been taking a toll on her mentally. A part of her relentlessly guilting over how she left the brunette hanging dry, while the other part of her justifies her actions as a means of protecting herself from going down a road she isn't ready for.
But, she doesn't want to be that cruel. She can't be. At least not to the brunette. It's weird, with anybody else she can't resist the urge to break down any confidence they hold within their soul, but when it comes to Jade, she can't find any bitter bone in her body that wants to purposefully hurt the girl. It's like she can't live with the thought of knowing she's the reason that the brunette isn't smiling.
She does miss that cute ass dimpled smile, whenever Jade was bantering back and forth with her.
Shit.
She doesn't know how much more of this she can take as she runs the risk of glancing over at Jade for the millionth time. The dark brunette is busy taking notes as the teacher continues her lecture. Her head peeking up every few seconds to catch whatever is written on the board. Kinsey smiles internally at the way her eyebrows invert when she's serious. Her hand moving across the paper at the speed of light as she scribbles notes down. I know she's not failing this class.
"Okay, we'll stop here today class. I wanted to take some time to pass out your progress reports before the end of the quarter so you guys can see where you stand with your grades," Mrs. Rodriguez abruptly announces once she drops the green dry erase marker into the magnetic tray that clings onto the huge dry-erase board in the front of the class. Her low, pointed heels clack against the vinyl floor as she crosses the front of the classroom to her desk.
Kinsey lifts her body up in the seat, finding that it's the first time in this entire class period that she's found something to pique her interest. She's afraid to look at the slip of paper since she has a slight prediction of the grades that'll be on there.
Her fear of lacking grades and pressure from her personal guidance counselor, Mrs. Andrews, was enough for her to start attending class regularly again, but expecting her to actually work to pass these classes is another thing.
Kinsey slowly watches the teacher make her way down the row. Mrs. Rodriguez's tentative eyes give Kinsey an automatic knot in her stomach as she lays the slip of paper upside down onto the blonde's desk.
The teacher quickly passes Kinsey soon after. Kinsey flips the paper over to be disappointed beyond return.
AP PHILOSOPHY - F
BIOLOGY HONORS - F
CALCULUS - D
WEIGHTLIFTING - A
CAREER EXPLORATION - B
But, at least she wasn't failing calculus. She tries to find positivity in her failure but she can't seem to find it at all. She is failing her most crucial classes that will affect her GPA and her chance of getting into university.
The only reason she isn't failing Career Exploration is that the teacher, Mrs. Wilson, is nearing a hard 70 years on the planet Earth and keeps mixing Kinsey up with some other blonde chick in class when she takes attendance, making Kinsey basically there when she never really is.
The grades serve as a wake-up call for the girl, making her realize that shit's getting real. Her application deadline for the University of Alabama is nearing and her grades look like this. Full ride scholarship or not, they're not going to accept someone with a 1.6 GPA. The odds are not in Kinsey's favor.
Now, she has to figure out how she'll fix these grades within the next three weeks before final quarter grades are put through. She doesn't have high expectations. Her goal is to achieve a 2.0 but how the fuck is she going to do that when she could give a fuck less about school anymore? Senioritis is real, and she's an unforgiving bitch.
"Okay, so some of you may have seen your grades and aren't too happy with the outcome," the teacher vocalizes before briefly glancing in Kinsey's direction, "but let's just stay positive and realize that there are at least three weeks left before final grades need to be submitted. Also, just a reminder, your beginning-of-the-year projects are due in two weeks so I'd advise you on starting them, at least. This may be your last chance to fix your grade for the quarter."
After that, the bell rings, bringing a perfect ending to the teacher's announcement.
Kinsey takes a glance over at Jade innocently assembling her supplies into her backpack. I have to get over myself.
She indecisively observes the girl's every move, contemplating how she'll approach this. Kinsey watches the seemingly innocent girl that wears all black, starting with the ripped baggy jeans that aren't too loose on her as they do a good job of accentuating her ass, much to Kinsey's liking. The outfit comes together with the plain tank top paired with a faded black denim jacket ripped on one elbow and shredded all across the back.
One thing Kinsey can't deny is how attractive she finds Jade's style to be. Kinsey finds it ironic how the dark color she chooses to wear all the time in no way represents the brunette's true attitude, especially when they're alone. She always ends up being a nervous little bitch around me. Okay... maybe a cute nervous little bitch.
She snaps herself out of thinking about the girl's clothes before she misses her opportunity. She hurriedly gets up and grapples at the few supplies she has before following the brunette outside of the classroom, oblivious to the fact that she's doing the exact same thing Jade did to her over a week ago when the girl was trying to desperately grasp her attention.
The only difference being that Kinsey is successful. The blonde grabs the back of Jade's upper arm softly to avoid scaring the shit out of the girl.
Jade turns immediately with disgust on her face reading to tell someone off until she catches those darned blue eyes. She knows she's fucked now. Any sense of control leaving her being, allowing Kinsey to pull her aside to a wall of lockers as students stumble throughout the hall. Her eyes glue onto Kinsey's in confusion but she stays silent, curious as to what the blonde has to say first.
Kinsey catches herself as she slowly falls into those cute wide puppy dog eyes.
"Um," Kinsey stumbles, coughing a little to clear her throat. She didn't expect to be so awkward but the girl's gaze makes her stomach swirl every fucking time. "We need to talk about what we're gonna do with our project," Kinsey emphasizes before pulling her lips together tightly and standing up against Jade's entrancing stare.
"I-I could just finish it and put your name on it. It's no big deal," Jade says before pulling at her bottom lip with her teeth.
That's cute as hell. Don't do that shit to me. Kinsey finds herself unable to handle standing before the brunette. Her legs feeling a little wobbly. What the fuck? The feeling of nervousness being too foreign for her liking.
She sighs, shutting her eyes momentarily before opening them back up, "Mrs. Rodriguez is on my ass about this project so I don't think she'll let me sneak out on this one. We have to work on it together," Kinsey explains, well aware that Mrs. Rodriguez has been paying extra attention to her work as of late.
Jade looks off to the side, "I don't think-"
"I'm failing."
Jade pauses to look at Kinsey, the blonde's eyes pleading silently.
Kinsey notices the slight compassion in the brunette's features and goes to seal the deal. "If I don't get this project done, I can forget my chances of playing ball at Alabama."
Jade nods, looking off to the side again. Her eyes wandering with the uncertainty she feels. This is what she wanted, right? She wanted to make amends and fix everything. This is my chance.
Jade watches the girl standing before her look so desperate. Her heart melts at the long eyelashes fluttering her way.
Kinsey smirks internally, noticing Jade battling within herself as subtle creases appear on her forehead caused by her brows inverting once again.
Jade looks back at the blonde, "Okay... we could work on it. We'll just have to condense it a little since we don't have much time but it's possible," Jade says, still slightly unsure.
Don't be fooled, Jade is still uneasy about this but she's open to spending more time around Kinsey since she so badly fucked up the last time she tried to fix things between them.
"Fuck yes," Kinsey celebrates to herself as she guarantees that her grade will survive, but in the deepest darkest depths of her being, she doesn't mind the idea of being able to spend time with Jade again too. Her annoyance and anger dissipating over the week-and-a-half the two have been apart.
"You missed me that much," Jade jokingly adds.
Kinsey side-eyes the girl, "You wish."
The blonde gains her confidence back as she lifts her chin up. Her slightly taller figure starts to walk past the brunette. "I'll call you," she announces before disappearing into the abyss of nothingness as the students start to disappear into their classrooms.
Jade is left dumbfounded in the almost ghostly hallway. She used my own words against me. The memory of the first time they met in the hallway coming back to her. She squints her eyes as she processes the memory, but soon a smirk runs across her features at the idea of having Kinsey's attention again.
"Sounds good," she mutters to herself before walking away to her next class of the day with butterflies in her stomach and a stupid grin on her face.
_______
"Don't you just like life sometimes."
Jade expresses the thought out loud as her chin sits in her palm and a small smile tugs at her mouth.
Melanie cautiously turns her head to side-eye her little sister, "Oh. my. god. I really need to get you help." Melanie suggests with a tone full of pure concern, leading her to get up from the barstool. "I'll grab the keys, you grab a jacket. I think I know a doctor."
Jade turns to her sister with a deadpan expression and uses her unmanicured finger to flick Melanie off slowly as she sits opposite from the older sibling on the other side of the kitchen bar.
Melanie slows down mid-stance with wide eyes and sits back down. "Nope, you're good."
Jade goes back to munching on her simple PB&J sandwich being that was the only thing besides fried eggshell-embedded eggs that Melanie knew how to make.
"Seriously, are you sure you're okay. I've learned about bipolar disorder in one of my classes and it usually fluctuates from a highly depressed state to a manic one where the person feels extremely positive and motivat-"
"Shut up, Mel. I'm fine," Jade growls before going in for another bite.
"Yeah, but I've never seen Jade this excited," Melanie exaggerates staring back at her sister.
"Don't refer to me in the third person," Jade cuts in, annoyed. It is one of those small pet peeves she has.
"Okay, but you literally smiled when you walked in. I thought I was seeing things at first so I didn't ask, but I guess not. What has you all happy and shit?"
Jade ignores Melanie, mindlessly chewing on her sandwich. The thought of Kinsey smirking crosses her mind, sending a wave of giddiness throughout her body.
"See, you did it again!" Melanie calls out after seeing her sister genuinely smile out of nowhere.
Jade goes to say something, but her phone vibrates on the countertop face up. Once Jade sees the name, her spidey senses come in out of nowhere as she snatches the phone from the table before Melanie can even have the chance to look over and see that Kinsey is the one that's calling.
"I gotta go pick up this call real quick. Be back, bye," Jade rushes, dropping her sandwich onto the white porcelain plate and scurrying to her bedroom with the phone continuously vibrating in hand.
Melanie huffs at Jade's secretiveness. She knows it's her little blonde girlfriend.
Once Jade shuts the door behind her, she leans back against it shutting her eyes as the ringtone continues on. She lets out a shaky breathe once she opens her eyes before slowly swiping her finger across the screen to answer the call.
"Hello."
The mellow voice that booms through the phone's speaker causes Jade to punch the air with her other hand. Even her voice is hot.
Jade composes herself by straightening out her shoulders as if the girl can see her on the other end, "Hey, what's up," she replies cooly as if she didn't just go through a whirlwind of emotions a second ago.
"Nothing much. I said I would call you, right?"
"Yeah, after you dramatically walked away like a fucking diva. I thought you were cooler than that."
"First off, I'm not a diva. I'm a badass," Kinsey corrects, highly offended.
"Oh, right. I'm sorry Mrs. OG badass. How could I fuck that up," Jade smart mouths as she rolls her eyes.
Kinsey's chuckling can be heard through the speaker of the phone. The sound filling Jade up with pleasure, proud to make the blonde laugh.
"You're good," Kinsey compliments.
"I try. Now, what's this call for. I know it's not because you wanted to hear me make fun of you, even though you make it kinda easy."
"I wanted to ask if you were free to work on the project tomorrow."
"Tomorrow?"
"Yeah, I have a game next weekend so practice is gonna be pretty tight next week. I don't think I'll have time to work on it with you then, so tomorrow is the best option," Kinsey explains.
Jade nods, understanding the situation but feeling uneasy when thinking about going back to Kinsey's home, especially after how that ended the last time.
"Uh-"
Kinsey immediately senses Jade's apprehension, "We can go to your house, instead."
"No."
"Why no-"
"Your house is fine," Jade cuts, not even allowing her house to be an option. She knows her mom comes home from work earlier on Fridays.
"You sure?" Kinsey questions, having a quick flashback to Jade stepping back away from her in fear after their kiss.
"Yeah, I promise I won't freak out like that again... as long as you don't try anything," Jade says, almost whispering the last part.
Kinsey sighs, "Can't make any promises."
Jade doesn't know why the statement makes her cheese. She can't deny that the thought of another kiss from Kinsey has her forgetting about all her fears and traumas for a brief moment.
Jade opens her mouth to reply but she hears a faint shout in the background on Kinsey's end. It sounds like her mother is calling her.
"Fuck," Kinsey sighs, "I guess I'll just see you tomorrow then. Do you need a ride again?" Kinsey asks.
"No, I'm fine," Jade replies. She doesn't want to sit through another episode of James, the Hollister model, consistently kissing Kinsey's ass thinking that that's a method of flirting.
She also remembers the other happenings in Kinsey's car, so she'd much rather avoid being in small spaces with the girl, knowing that she herself couldn't promise that anything wouldn't happen again.
Could those kisses ever happen again? Her body screams yes at the thought, but the deep, dark recesses of her consciousness say otherwise. What's wrong with you, Jade? You can't do that.
She's just so confused. She pulls the phone down from her ear after the line goes dead and proceeds to open the door to go back to the kitchen and finish her lunch/dinner.
Jade yanks open the door to watch a grown-ass brunette woman fall forward with her hand cupping her ear.
Jade looks down at her feet, unimpressed, "Really?"
Melanie looks up from her sprawled out position on the floor, "Ay, a girl's got to do what she has to do to make sure her theory is correct."
"And what is that theory?" Jade questions in an annoyed tone as one brow quirks up.
"That my sister's been keeping a secret from me."
"Okay, you're doing too much. Get up before I start thinking less of you."
"You already do," Melanie says as she starts to pick herself up from the floor.
Jade makes a face of slight agreement as she nods.
"But, that's not the point. The point is... you like girls, Jade."
Jade's jaw clicks, "Will you cut it out? I'm not fucking gay."
"Bitch, you say it like it's some sort of disease."
Jade sighs, "I don't mean to make it sound like that but that's just not what I am."
"That's not what it sounded like to me when you were on the phone with little miss blondie," Melanie says, referring to Kinsey.
Jade stabilizes her breathing, "Okay, so she's not as bitchy as I thought she was. I can't talk to people?"
"She's not just people. She's the girl I caught you kissing in her car."
Jade shakes her head, "I'm not into girls. End of story." Jade proceeds to brush past her sister standing in the opening of her doorway.
Melanie sighs at her sister's stubbornness. "I guess it runs in the family. Stubborn ungrateful little brat," she voices under her breath.
She decides to step back, scared to push her sister to another breaking point. Melanie's just thankful that she isn't holed up in her bedroom anymore. She'll tell me when she's ready.
With that, Melanie goes to join her sister in the kitchen to annoy her some more about different things.
