part I ; the flight

lydia

I gripped the plastic handle of my carry-on as I maneuvered my way through the Los Angeles International Airport. My ticket in hand, I made my way to security, pausing at the back the long line. I sighed and yawned as the time was around four in the morning.

After almost ten minutes, I finally approached the front of security. "Miss. Can you please come up here?" A young woman called to me and I walked up handing her my passport and ticket. She smiled at me. "Okay, miss Martin, thank you, please have a safe flight." I nodded, surprised she didn't say anything about my name. My thoughts were all for not as she stopped me. "Are you, by any chance, related to Katherine Martin?"

Bam, there it was. My smile lessened, "Yes, M'am, she's my sister." I said annoyed. I paused for the silence and questions that almost always follow.

"Wow, that's incredible! I love her as Clary in The Mortal Instruments TV show! I read the books so I really love it, tell her she's doing a good job! At least better than the city of bones movie." I refrained myself from stabbing someone as I put on a smile and told her that I would.

"Wow, great! Uh, okay wow, have an amazing, yeesh, 14 hour flight." I nodded and stepped past her with my carry-on and purse. My sister was always the most loved one. Everyone loved her and didn't even step to the side to notice me in her shadow. And I'm the oldest! Well, technically only thirty minutes, but I am the older twin. And she must have gotten all of my mom's beauty because we're fraternal. The only thing we share is our red hair. Oh, Katherine is so pretty. Oh, Katherine gets all the guys' attention. Oh, Katherine is Prom Queen. Oh, Katherine was scouted to become your favorite book series' spinoff TV show's lead actress. Oh, Katherine this, Katherine that.

At least I'm smarter than she ever was, I say to myself. At least I got a full scholarship to Melbourne University and I'm going to become a world class surgeon. At least my secrets aren't splashed all over page six... But don't I want them to be? Doesn't everyone want to be famous?

I push the thoughts from my mind and chide myself. Kat has always been nice to me and I need to do the same. She was always there for me, so why am I so immensely jealous of her? Oh yeah, she took Jackson.

I shake the negative thoughts from my head as I take off my shoes and place them, my carry on, and my purse onto the security conveyor belt. The woman motions for me to walk through the metal detector and I go through without a beep or problem.

I grab my things and head for the crowded terminal.

"Excuse me, uh miss?" I shook awoke startled at the sound of human interaction. My eyes opened and widened as a woman in flight attendant clothing shook me awake. I looked around and saw no one but a few people throughout the terminal.

"-wh...what?" I suddenly became more aware and I shot up in my chair. My hair was plastered with sweat to my neck in little curls and my sweatpants were shifting around my waist.

The flight attendant looked sympathetic. "Miss, the plane to Melbourne has boarded, and sadly since you weren't in your seat, it's been occupied. There is, however, one more seat on the flight, and it will be a free change of seating arrangements."

I stood up at once, horrified. "When is the plane leaving?!" My mind was darting around.

"Oh, in about 20 minutes it will go to take off. You have time, Miss. But I do suggest you hurry. Would you like me to direct you to your new seat?" She smiled at me softly.

"Could you maybe just give me the seat number, please?" I pulled my purse up my shoulder and grabbed my carry on from the floor.

"Of course, Miss. Come this way please." She led me to a somewhat large receptionist table where she handed me a new ticket. "Have a nice flight." She went back to her work while I rushed through the connector thing onto the plane.

The flight attendant looked at me with exasperation like she's been waiting a year or something for me to board. "So you're the one who had to switch seats?" I nodded. "Follow me then." She guided me down the aisle and when we stopped, we were near the midsection of the airplane near the wings. She smiled sickeningly sweet, pointing to the side column. "This is your seat, Miss. Have a nice flight."

She sauntered away as I pushed my carry on into the above compartment, and then sat down into the comfortable chair. I hadn't ridden on a very nice flight since I was around twelve, and we had flown to Hawaii. However, that was only a six hour flight, and since this one is fourteen, the plane itself is much nicer. There is a smart tablet attached to the back of the seat in front of me, and it looks like it's detachable, with a cord attached to it. The seat itself was soft and able to lean back. There was a portable blanket with a pillow wedged under the seat, the blanket being very soft.

Finally I looked to my left to see who'd be accompanying me for 14 hours. My eyes raked over a very attractive guy, who from what I assumed, was about my age, if not older. His hair was floppy and a shade of brown that was almost dirty blonde but not quite. It was somewhat styled into a sort of point at the front, and it looked soft. His jaw was speckled with moles, along with being very sharp. His entire bone structure was beautiful, almost like it were godly. Then, my eyes reached his. He had looked up at me, most likely wondering why I wasn't sitting down already, but the shade of his eyes was just amazing. They were almost like dripping gold mixed with honey and little flecks of brown floated around in them. I almost felt like I could tumble into them and get lost.

I sat down, finally, smiling politely and most likely, creepily, at the stranger. He smiled as well, as I set my purse down on the floor.

"Oh, hello. You must be the one who fell asleep..?" He was Gorgeous. I almost fainted, but tried to smile again.

"Oh, yeah that's- I'm me- I'm um Lydia." I stumbled over my words before extending a hand almost hazardously, which he took slowly.

"Eh, Stiles. Nice to meet you, Lydia." He grinned, and pulled back his hand.

"Yeah.. I mean you too. Sorry, I'm usually better with words." I felt my cheeks filling with heat, and I looked down.

"It's cool, I mean I am a little flustered too, I did just see your face." My heart began to beat fast and it felt like a net of butterflies was released in my stomach.

"Oh, uh thank you.... Stiles. So why are you.. Uh flying to Australia?" Lydia tried to distract herself as the plane began to move, making its way to the runway.

"School." And at that, there were two loud beeps throughout the plane.

"Ladies and gentlemen, if you'd make sure your seat belts are fastened and that all trays are secure, your seats are forward into the upright position and all electronics are in the off position. If you'd watch a short presentation about the safety fundamentals this aircraft has to offer." The lady went on rattling specific ways the plane could crash and what to do in that case. After ten minutes the plane stopped moving and the attendant went to sit down.

"Hello, this is your pilot speaking, please get ready for takeoff." And the plane was moving down the runway.

I tried to calm my breathing, which was very difficult to do, when you are hurtling down a strip of pavement about to be in the air, flying.

Stiles noticed me fidgeting and he grabbed my wrist, gently. "Are you okay, Lydia?" I smiled and looked over at him. His entire being was just calming and I started breathing a little more controlled.

"Yeah.. It's just, I've never actually... Flown before. Well since I was twelve." I gripped his hand and closed my eyes as the plane reached the end of the runway and lifted into the air. There was turbulence for a few seconds and then it was just smooth.

"Better?" He asked and I nodded, leaning my head back against my headrest and trying to chill out. I realized I was still gripping him and I opened my eyes quickly before removing my hands.

"Sorry." I smiled grimly, as I looked again at him.

"No problem, Lydia." He said smiling.

"Why do you keep saying my name like that?" I asked as I leaned back in my chair once more.

And as I was drifting to sleep I heard his muffled answer, amongst all the other things I could hear.

"I like the sound of it on my tongue."
