Chapter 20: Awake

She eventually fell asleep, and her dreams were riddled with Grievers, broken legs and screams of pain, and Gally's screams from the changing. Monsters that resembled people, but were wrapped in thick black veins, black blood dripped from their chins, Ben and Gally both screaming she doesn't belong. Doctors in white masks and rubber gloves holding her down while she was cuffed to a bed, the noises of saws and buzzing medical tools cut into her head while she screamed in pain.

"TORI!"

She sat up with a jerk, and a scream. She scrambled out of the chair, making it tip over as she crashed into the table, causing some of the stuff to scatter.

"What? Where!? What?"

She whipped her head back and forth, trying to figure out where she was and what was going on. Her dream made her shiver and feel incredibly creeped out. She wrapped her arms around her self  trying to keep her panic inside and trying not to freak out. Her breathing was wild gasps.

"Tori..?" A rough scratchy voice whispered.

She blinked a few times and looked around. Gally was frowning at her, his arms still tied down, but he was awake and looking at her.

"Ga-Gally?" She whispered in disbelief.

"Ya. A little help."

She stared at him for another few seconds.

"Tori!" He barked. And started coughing, his voice was dry and scratchy. She jumped and flinched.

"Sorry."

"No...sorry. I'm sorry." She whispered. She slowly ushed off the table and crept back towards him and cautiously sat down on the edge of the bed and with shaking hands untied the knots. Once he was free he flexed and rubbed the raw skin around his wrists.

"Why was I tied down?"

"You wouldn't stop flailing and trying to hit everyone. It was for your safety as much as ours." She paused, "Oh, wait, I'll get you some water."

She got up and filled up a cup from the sink and came back over, he had sat up and swung his legs over the edge of the bed. He had his head in his hands. She handed him the cup and then righted the chair and sunk down into it. She was stiff and tense. She didn't know how he was going to be. She was scared to talk, or ask him anything. He just sat with his head in is hands. They sat silent for a long time. She could see the goosebumps and the shivers. She slowly got up and pulled the blanket up over his shoulders. She went to go back to her chair, when he caught hold of her wrist. She froze, her heart slammed into her chest, and her lungs forgot to function.

"Gally?" She whispered.

He pulled her closer, between his legs and then slowly, like he was scared she would scream or run, he wrapped his arms around her tiny waist and buried his face into her stomach. He let out a chocked cry, and then his shoulders were shaking. His arms tightened. She had no idea what was going on. But she wasn't used to seeing Gally crying, especially these big heart wrenching, body shacking sobs. She wigged a little, so she had some room, and then just sunk down into his lap, a knee on each side of his hips, and wrapped her arms around his broad shoulders and pulled him back closer. He squished his face into her neck and wrapped his arms around her, holding her shirt tight in his fists and just held her while he cried. She wasn't sure what to do, so she just gently ran a hand through his hair. She started to quietly hum a little lullaby tune.

"Can you sing the words?"

His voice was so rough and broken she felt her heart crack down the middle.

"Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Never let it fade away. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Save it for a rainy day. For love may come and tap you on the shoulder
Some star-less night, just in case you feel you wanna hold her. You'll have a pocketful of starlight. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Never let it fade away.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket . For love may come and tap you on the shoulderSome star-less night, and just in case you feel you wanna hold her. You'll have a pocketful of starlight.

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Save it for a rainy day. For when your troubles startn' multiplyin'. And they just might, It's easy to forget them without tryin'. With just a pocketful of starlight

Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Never let it fade away. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Save it for a rainy day. For love may come and tap you on the shoulder. Some star-less night, just in case you feel you wanna hold her. You'll have a pocketful of starlight. Catch a falling star and put it in your pocket. Never let it fade away."

He had stopped crying and was now just holding Victoria like she was his life line. She just held him and gently rubbed his back. She didn't know what to say.

"Gally..." She started, but trailed off.

"I can remember." He whispered.

"Remember? Remember what?" She gently pulled back so she could see him. His face was red from crying, his eyes looked distant and horrified. She gently held his face making him look at her.

"Ya. From before."

"What?" She asked again, shocked.

"What don't you get? I had memories return!" He snapped.

"I got that Gal." She said quietly. "but...how...?" She whispered to her self and frowned, pulling her eyebrows together. She chewed on her lip, lost to her wild spinning thoughts. She only came back to the present when she felt her bottom lip tugged from her teeth. She blinked a few times, focusing on Gally.

"Sorry. Got lost for a second." She whispered sheepishly.

He just hummed watching her with his intense eyes. She took in his appearance again. He was still pale and sweaty, yet shivering. His eyes looked exhausted, and his body was sagging. She slid off his lap and gently yet forcibly laid him down. He raised an eyebrow at her.

"No. You need sleep. Looks like you have the flu."

"Feels like it." He croaked.

"Then definitely not!" She said firmly. "But..." She nervously tugged on a curl, "if..if you want..."

He slid over with a wince and opened his arms, "Looked like you had some terrible nightmares."

"All week. I haven't slept much." She admitted as she lay down beside him. He lay on his side looking at her with such a brokenness, She stopped complaining about herself. "Gall... what can I do for you?" She reached out and placed her hand on his cheek. He closed his eyes and nuzzled her hand.  She smiled slightly, despite how miserable they both felt. "Come here, she gently tugged him closer, and he willing followed, and placed his head down on her chest. She felt his body slowly relax, she heard a small whimper when she rubbed his back. She stopped, and lifted her hand, "Gall?"

"Sorry. My skin hurts, my joints hurts, my head is pounding, everything feels like led...like a flu. Sorry Tori...can you just...not?"

"Sorry. Ya, sorry."

She slowly lowered her hand and pulled the blanket up over them both and draped her arm over him and just held him close. She knew he fell asleep when his body relaxed and lost the tension. It took her a long time to fall asleep, her mind was racing; how could he have memories come back. So why was Gally relatively okay right now. She was also nervous, what if he turned into something like the boys who all died or had to be killed. A few slid down her temples and into her hair.

•×•

She woke up when there was movement beside her. She blinked a few times, her eyes adjusting to the bright light. The sun was shinning in through the window. Standing at the bedside were two huge figures. She blinked a few times and focused up in the guys. George and Jack stood with their arms folded and snug looks in their faces.

"Well I guess that's one way for someone to finally sleep." Jack sniggered.

"Shuck off." She whispered. She untangled one hand from the blanket and flipped them off.

"Victoria!" George gasped, but his smug look gave away that he was actually upset. "Though...your in perquarious possition."

"Shh." She glared at the guys. "He woke up last night and he was miserable. Shuck off, let him sleep."

The boys chuckled, but turned. George kissed Jack goodbye and left. Jack puttered around, checking Newt and doing his regular morning assessment. Victoria did her best to wiggle out. Gally stired.

"Shhh. Baby go back to sleep. I'll be right back." She soothed.

He groaned, and rolled over, curling into a ball, he was shivering now. Victoria got up and grabbed another blanket and laid it over him. Jack frowned, eyeing up Gally. He caught Victoria's eye and indicated to the hall. She followed him out just as Alby was on his way down the hall, towards them.

"Okay, what happened?" Jack asked quietly, "Gally woke up." He added for Alby.

"Oh. Well, that's good." He yawned.

"Yeah...he was...broken when he woke up. Looked miserable. Tired, like he had the flu, said he had memories of before. And then just broke down and sobbed!"

"Memories? Did he say what he remembered?"

Victoria shook her head. "No. I wasn't going to push it. He'll exain when he's ready."

"How? How does he have memories?" Jack asked, scratching his head.

"My guess would be something in the Griever poison or the serum. This is the first time it seemed to work...well...so far. He was snappy when he was awake, but not violent like the others. He seemed more broken then angry."

"How's he now?" Alby asked, looking at the closed door, like he could see Gally through the door.

"Like he has the flu." Victoria said sadly.

"I'm sure it'll take a few more days." Jack agreed. He looked at Tori. "How are you feeling?"

She shrugged. "Weird nightmares, my head is sore, but that was the longest stretch of sleep I've had."

"Okay. Well, I'm not a Medjack, but one more day off and then I'm sorry Girly, you gotta go back to work. Winston is struggling with the animals."

"Agreed." Jack nodded, folding his arms. "If your head is still sore then that concussion is still kicking around. I'll see how you are at the end of the day." He turned and went back into the room.

She nodded with a smalk smile, "okay All." She squeezed his arm. "How are you doing?"

His face dropped and his body sagged. He ran a hand down his face. "I...I just wish I would have done something more. Ya know. I tried, when you brought it up, and I tried with him, but he shut down around me."

"Don't blame yourself. You tried. I tried."

"I should have pulled him from being a runner!"

"That was Minho's call, and he didn't listen to us....though...now....? All, I don't think he'll be a runner again. Sure we fixed his leg from being amputated....but we don't have proper medical training or the resources or tools...if we had proper doctors he would have been able to save his leg better. But no way he's running on that leg again."

It was Alby's turn to place his hands on her shoulders and give them a gentle reassuring squeeze. "You and Jack did everything you could. You save the shanks life. Besides you, he's my best friend. And I'll forever be greatful, Girly. Okay? You saved his life. Now we help him heal physically and mentally."

He pulled her into a hug and she wrapped her arms around him. He rested his chin in her head. They were quiet for a while, just holding each other, glad that their person was still alive.

"I have an idea, but want your option." He finally said. She hummed, waiting for him to explain. "it would make it easier because he won't be able to run...so if I offered him a position with me, as second in command."

"Oh! Okay, that's an interesting idea. Explain." She said, pulling away.

"Well the longer were here the more Greenies we get. The harder it is to keep things running smoothly. If I had an official second in command then maybe things would run a bit smoother. He could help keep order. The Gladers seem to like him. For the most part....he's level headed. He's clearly one of the top Gladers to be a runner. So...I think it's a smart choice."

The door behind them opened, Jack poked his head out. "Hey Tori...your boy is looking for you."

She nodded, "okay. I'll be right there." She looked back to Alby. "I like it." Victoria nodded. "I guess we wait until he's awake and getting better. I have a feeling after he wakes up he's not gonna be very happy."

Alby sighed and nodded. She gave him a small smile, as best she could muster to encourage him. He nodded his head to the door, "go."

She didn't need to be told twice. She opened the door and went back to Gally. He was curled up in bed, shivering, looking miserable. She ran a hand gently through his hair.

"Hi." She said quietly, a smile spread on her face.

He just groaned. But laid a hand on hers, pressing his hand closer and closing his eyes.

"Tor...I'm...I'm sorry." He whispered.

Frowning she leaned closer, and then just lay down beside him, rolling to face him.

"Why are you sorry?" She whispered.

"I think ..I think I tried to hurt you in the maze. I don't really remember that part. But I think I remember your face and you looked terrified."

"Well...I don't know. You yelled you don't belong here and then pushed me over. Minho knocked you out right after."

"You don't belong here. You weren't supposed to be here. It was supposed to be just guys. I don't know where you came from or why your here."

She wasn't sure how she felt about this, but her face must have fallen when her heart did.

"I didn't mean that I don't want you here. I'm just telling you what came back to me." He closed his eyes and groaned, rolling into his back, and throwing an arm over his eyes. Victoria sat up, and twisted around to see him better. "All the guys..." He started again. "We were all together before the maze. Classes, like school and stuff. It was always just us guys. You weren't there. I don't know where you were. That's all I meant."

"Oh." She said quietly.

"You're mad." He peeked under his arm. "Shuck. You are mad!" He groaned.

"No. Not mad, Gally. I'm not mad." She said slowly and shook her head, making her curls bounce. "I'm trying to process this information. It...it kinda fits with my dreams. I was always alone, in all my memories it was me and these doctors in white. So makes sense I wasn't with you guys before hand."

"Your sure?"

"Yes babe. I'm sure. I'm not mad." She looked at him and gentle pried his huge muscles arm off his face. And then cupped his cheek. "I'm not mad. I love you."

His eyes popped open.

"You...you love me?"

She smiled, a bit full genuine smile.

"Yes Gally. I love you. And you scared me so bad. If you die I'm going to bring you back just so I can kill you myself for dying."

"Then I won't die." He grinned.

He raised his shaking hands and buried them into her hair and pulled her back down.

"I love you too Freckles." He grinned at her. And pulled her head closer and kissed her forehead. She hummed and snuggled closer. Her face squished into his neck.

"Mmm. You need a shower Gal. You kinda smell." She chuckled.

"Smell like man you mean."

She snorted. And then giggled. "smell like youve been sick for a week and need a shower. But we'll worry about that later. Your still shivering and shuddering. You look tiered. Sleep and I'll get you some soup from Fry later. I have to go back to work tomorrow."

"What? Why were you off work?" He asked, his voice suddenly sharp.

"Had 20 stitches in my shoulder, and a concussion. After we got you back and situated, I helped with guys with Newt. Only after that did my symptoms show up. So Jack out me on a no work order for the week."

"Well then we need to make the most of today." Gally hummed and pulled her closer.

"Agreed."

Then snuggled closer and sighed.

"Oh Gally. Wanna know something?"

"Always."

"I broke Minho's nose."

He burst out laughing. "Tell me everything!"
