I looked at Micheal, then at Lucas, then back at Micheal again.
Crap, crap, crap!
Micheal looked pissed and confused while Lucas just looked, well perplexed. I had no idea how I was supposed to diffuse this situation. All I knew was that my brother was here, in Silver Point and I had almost kissed Lucas.
"Katelyn, we have to talk, now." Micheal said.
Lucas folded his arms across his chest and gave Micheal a withering glare, "Wow, not even a hello, just skip straight to the demands."
Micheal clenched his jaw and I would need a chainsaw to cut the tension between them. It was odd seeing Micheal here and next to Lucas of all people. Where Lucas was rough around the edges, Micheal was clean cut and crisp. They were like night and day compared to each other. Micheal was wearing his signature black suit but he had the white sleeves rolled up and the jacket hanging over his arm. My heart started beating faster when I saw the suitcase next to Micheal's feet. Make that a double crap, shit-storm deluxe!
"That's none of your business. I'm here to see Katelyn."
Lucas' jaw ticked and I jumped in before he could take a step towards Micheal, "Lucas, it's okay. He's right I need to talk to him."
I looked into his eyes and saw a storm raging in the blue depths. Lucas was mad but I couldn't begin to fathom why. Was he really that mad that he couldn't kiss me? Whatever it was it would have to wait until I dealt with Micheal. I tried pushing the kiss, or almost kiss, to the back of my mind. That was not as easy as I would have liked, Lucas had parts of my body on fire that I didn't even know existed. I'm no blushing virgin but I'm also no porn star either.
"Please Lucas, just give us a minute." I say while taking a step forward.
"Fine, I have other things to do anyway."
Before I can say anything else he brushes past me and shoulders into Micheal. I wait until Lucas' truck spins out of the driveway before fully facing my very pissed off brother.
"Well he's quite the character," Micheal said brushing off his jacket.
I narrowed my eyes at him, "What the hell are you doing here?"
"Can I please come in first? The flight was long and I need a place to put my suitcase."
I rolled my eyes but stepped aside for Micheal to come in. He takes a step into the house and whistles , "You've really been busy Kit-Kat."
Micheal set his luggage down in the empty living room and I knew I was going to have to explain some things to him. I still wasn't ready to tell him about mom but I needed him to just trust me. was that really so difficult? Well if I told him about last night then he's probably drag me home by my hair, so rather not mention that.
I eyed his suitcase, "How long are you staying for?"
"Hm, I don't know yet. Maybe the rest of the summer."
My eyes went wide as dinner plates and Micheal laughed at me, "Just kidding Kit-Kat, but your face is just priceless right now. I just wanted to see you."
I took a deep breath and felt my nerves calm at Micheal's smile. Then he held his arms open and I rushed in to give him a hug. I hated whenever Micheal and I fought, we were actually really close. I mean we were pretty much each others only family and I understood why he was so overprotective. Didn't mean I had to like it but he was simply the best brother ever.
"I'm so sorry I made you worry. I just needed some space."
Micheal hugged me tighter, "I'm sorry too Kit. You're a grown woman you can make your own choices."
"Didn't I tell you that just last week?"
Micheal pulled back but he placed both hands on my shoulders, "When did you grow up?"
"Around the same time you did! You're not that much older."
"I beat you by three years sis. So where are you staying?"
I was happy to see Micheal and I was happy that he was here but I didn't want him to know everything because even if we had peace now he was going to freak out once once he knew about Lucas. Wait was there even anything to know about Lucas? My mind flicked back to the almost kiss and I felt my cheeks flush. Yep, there was definitely something to know and Micheal can't know it.
"I'm renting out a cottage and as you can see the house isn't quite ready yet."
Luckily for me that wasn't a total lie so I wasn't feeling too bad about it but then I saw Micheal's suitcase and wondered where he was planning on staying.
"Good. I'll have to find a place then. Bet that cottage of yours doesn't have an extra room huh?"
I had to keep my face as neutral as possible, "Sorry just one bedroom and a very tiny couch."
The front door slammed shut followed by a thundering sound from the foyer. I turned just in time to see Chloe run up behind me and I've never been happier to see anyone in my whole life.
"Finally found you." Chloe said, then her eyes flicked to Micheal, "Guess now I know why Lucas is pissed."
I ignored Chloe and the confused look on Micheal's face, "Chloe this is my brother, Micheal."
I gave Chloe a pointed look and I saw her face go beet red, "Oh, nice to meet you. Do you mind if I steal Katelyn for a minute?"
Chloe laced her arm through mine and pulled me into the kitchen before Micheal could even reply. Then she spun around and faced me.
Chloe held up one finger, "Okay, one what the hell happened between you and Lucas, I tried calling you but you weren't answering so I called him and he nearly bit my head off?"
I rubber my hands over my face, "Nothing happened, okay?"
"And I'm the Easter bunny, now spill."
Again I found myself back to where Lucas was so close to kissing me, to the point where I almost begged him for it. I wasn't about to give Chloe the full scoop but she had her arms crossed over her chest and her one foot tapping furiously against the tiles. She had a determined look on her face and it felt like she was daring me to lie to her. She could be really scary if she wanted to.
I turned around to see if Micheal was anywhere close by, "We almost kissed."
Chloe's eyes went wide, "I knew it! When did this happen?"
"About the same time my brother showed up."
Chloe started cackling, "Man that's some bad luck right there. Wait, does Lucas know he's your brother?"
I frowned trying to remember if I introduced Micheal as my brother but when I found him standing in the door I kind of went into panic mode. Then again I can't actually remember ever even telling Lucas about Micheal.
"I don't think so. Actually I might have never even mentioned a brother."
Chloe nodded her head, "That's why he's pissed."
"What are you talking about."
Chloe rolled her eyes, "Hot guy shows up at your doorstep and you dismiss Lucas ten seconds later after he almost kissed you, just to speak to the new guy. Get it yet?"
I'm not even going to touch the topic of Chloe thinking my brother is hot. Just, no.
"You have got to be kidding me."
"Think about it! You never told Lucas you had a brother so it makes sense that he would be jealous."
I shook my head, "That's the least of my worries right now. I have my big brother in town and he seriously can't know everything I've been doing. Tell me you have a room available, please Chloe?" I grabbed her shoulders and I'm sure the panic reflected in my eyes.
"Okay, fine. But you are so going to give me all the details after this!"
We walked back into the living room where Micheal was looking at the empty mantel piece on the fireplace. A small part of me was happy that I had taken down the photos of mom and Macy. With everything else going on I didn't feel like explaining that to Micheal.
He turned around before brushing his hands off, "So what were ladies talking about?"
Chloe clasped her hands together, "We found you a place to stay! Come on before it's booked out again."
Then she spun around and walked to the front door. I couldn't help notice the looks that Micheal kept giving her and I just prayed that he didn't find a reason to stay any longer than necessary. I drove my little rental car with Micheal squished into the passenger side behind Chloe's monster of a truck.
"You couldn't have picked a bigger car?"
I laughed, "This one is fuel efficient and right now I'm really happy I didn't!"
We stopped at on the most beautiful Inn's I've ever seen. The outside was all log cabins buried deep into the trees with one office building in the center. After Micheal checked in Chloe left and I was alone with my brother. Micheal unpacked his things and suggested we go to dinner together. And all I keep thinking about is mom's letter and how to tell Micheal.
We stop at Garcia's because honestly, it's the best restaurant in town. As we sit down, Micheal grabs a menu and starts reading, probably in a bid to avoid me. After we place our orders for drinks Micheal breaks the silence, "I'm only in town for the day, tomorrow I have to fly back home to meet with some of mom's old clients. They need assurance that the company will be run in exactly the same way."
Nodding my head I take a sip of water before replying, "Yeah, okay. So what time are you leaving then?"
"Tomorrow at eight-thirty. I just needed to see for myself that you're okay."
When I look up into Michael's eyes he gives me a sad smile and I have to force one for him. Lucas can make me forget about everything else for a breath of a second before it all comes crashing down again. I still can't believe that I told him everything about my mother. I've even had a breakdown in front of him.
I shook my head to bring me back to the present, "I'm fine Micheal, really. As hard as this is to believe, I'm not made of glass. This has really been a good thing for me."
Micheal sighs, "I know. I also know I'm being an ass but you're the only family I have so go easy on me."
I smiled and for the first time since he arrived I'm not terrified of my brother. We spend the rest of the night talking and eating about our holidays. Micheal has been busy running my mom's company and keeping all her old clients. I tell him about the house and everything I plan to do with it while leaving out everything about Lucas.
Later that bight I drop him off at the inn and drive home. When I pull into the driveway, I only see Lucas' car. Monica's silver sedan is nowhere to be seen so she's still dealing with her family crisis. The house is dark and empty and as I walk out the back door I only see the blue glow from the pool.
Lucas is sitting at the edge with his legs dipped into the water and he didn't even look up when I walked to him. The blue glow from the water bathes his face in a pale light. My hearts starts beating faster as I kick out my shoes and sit down beside him. The water is actually really nice as it wraps around my legs, cooling my heated body.
Lucas turns his head in my direction, "So, where's the suit?"
I try to keep my grin from my features when I realize that Chloe was right, he's really jealous. There's a flutter in my stomach that I try to ignore. My grin is almost painful as it tries to break loose. I'm going to tell Lucas that Micheal is my brother, but first I'm going to have some fun with it.
