I was encircled in a strong embrace with, my face rested against something hard and warm so I kept my eyes closed. There was an intoxicating scent so familiar that wrapped around me, making me feel safe. I cracked my eyes open, staring straight into a broad chest.
Then I lilted my head up and stared at Lucas. He was holding me but that wasn't what had me going beet read. No, because I was holding Lucas. He had his arms wrapped around my shoulders pulling my body flush against his and I had my arms around his torso.
There was another urgent matter though, one that I could honestly not help one bit. I really needed the bathroom. Any normal person would simply wake up and walk to the bathroom but no, I needed to be weird about it! I also didn't want to be caught in his arms, at least that way, I could deny that it ever happened.
I gently picked up Lucas' arm and placed it on his side and then peeked up to see if he was still sleeping. So now that I had my shoulders free, there was still the issue of my arm stuck underneath Lucas. With balance, I didn't know I had, I manages to get myself off the couch in a kneeling position. Now all I had to do was gently pull my arm free and then make a run for it. My bladder on the other hand felt like it was about to explode.
"What are you trying to do?"
My whole body froze but I refused to look up at him, those eyes might just be my undoing. Resisting the affect he had on me was getting harder and now that he was actually being nice to me and showing me a side of him, I'm sure not many people get to see. It was impossible to resist and I could feel what ever resolve I had left start to crumble.
"I need to use the bathroom."
"Then why are you sitting in front of the couch?"
"You're lying on my arm." I said through clenched teeth and a face white hot with embarrassment.
"Now how did your arm get over there?" Lucas asked in a teasing tone, his voice still thick with sleep.
"Lucas, I'm going to pee right here on this floor."
"Look at me Katelyn."
I clenched my jaw together, "No."
"Then I suggest you get comfortable."
I swiveled my head around to face Lucas, only to suck in a sharp breath. Those blue eyes that were always narrowed at me, were now hooded. His strong jaw that was always covered in a shadow was sporting a heavier beard and I wondered how I had never noticed that before.
Lucas smirked and I narrowed my eyes. The bastard did it on purpose and had fallen for it! Again. Lucas shifted his weight from my arm and I pulled it out. Then I barreled through the cottage to the bathroom. I did my thing but also ran a brush through the tangled brown mess on my head and pulled it into a neat ponytail. Then I brushed my teeth and washed my face.
Lucas knocked at the door, "I'm gonna go get food, anything you want."
I thought it over, "You know, I could really go for some sloppy Joe's right about now."
I heard Lucas chuckle through the door, "Okay, be back in a minute."
I waited for the front door to close and sighed. This whole day was so normal it was scar, then again there was also mom's letter. The words that tried to break me. I kept replying my mom's last moments, trying to figure out if I could have gotten all of this out sooner.
When Lucas found me on the floor, I wanted a hole to appear next to me so I could jump into it and disappear. He pulled me back though and I wondered how he was so calm with me when most people would have been freaking out. There I was crying my heart out and telling him everything.
Lucas was getting too close and that was my own fault, I was relying on him way too much and now he knew more about me than anyone in Silver Point. I had opened up it him, something I couldn't even do with my brother or Diane.
I picked up my phone and saw the missed calls from both Diane and Micheal. If I had to pick one of the two it would be the hysterical woman with seriously bad advice, so I dialed Diane's number.
It rang maybe three times before it was picked up but I did not expect the person who answered, "Kit-Kat?"
"Micheal? What are you doing with Diane's phone?"
"Well you weren't picking up any of my calls."
"I had a good reason." I said lacing my voice with just enough anger.
"I know, I'm sorry okay but I can't take you not talking to me. Look, if this is important to you then do it but please text me at least once a day."
"How about once a week?"
"Kit..." Micheal said with and undertone of warning.
"Micheal, you need to trust that I can take care of myself."
"I do trust you okay? It's just that town is not home and these aren't normal circumstances."
"I'm going to be fine, okay. Silver Point has a lot of good people."
Micheal sighed, "So find anything out about mom yet? Like, why she left you the house and why she never told us anything?"
I swallowed the lump rising in my throat, how was I supposed to tell him all of this? I knew that at some point, I would have to tell him but I wasn't ready, I was still trying to process it myself.
"Nothing, except the house was left for her by her parents and it's been abandoned for five years. I also metmom's best friend, she's awesome by the way--"
"Kate, what are you not telling me?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You babble when you lie, you've always done it."
"I'm not lying!"
"You know you can tell me anything right?"
"Yeah, I know," I saw Lucas through the living room window and then turned back to my call, "Micheal, I have to go."
"Okay, talk later then. Love you."
"Love you too," I said and dropped the call just before Lucas pushed open the front door.
He had a yellow bag in his hand and set it down on the kitchen table, a few minutes later we were siting in the living room and eating in silence. My mind kept drifting back to Micheal and his reaction when I tell him about mom. Maybe I could just let him read the letter that would save me the effort ling him. Then again maybe Micheal got his own letters from mom, I mean that's possible right?
"Penny for your thoughts." Lucas asked and I looked up for the first time.
"You're gonna need a lot of pennies for this one."
"Do you want to talk about it?"
I thought about, "No, I think I need to stew on this one for a bit." I said and I found myself grateful that Lucas didn't continue to ask.
Last night I had already told Lucas more than I ever planned on telling anyone and that shifted our dynamic. It was comfortable to around him and to show him the parts no one gets to see but what the hell did that mean?
When I was done eating, I started cleaning up. The whole sitting around thing just wasn't working for me, I was going stir-crazy and to be honest I was more than just a little bored. So with the broom in my hand, I started sweeping the non existent dust from the floors. Lucas' eyes followed me around the room with his brows drawn together.
"You do realize this place is clean right?"
"I can't sit still anymore and you know what they say about idle hands."
Lucas leaned against the counter and crossed one arm over his chest and rubbed his chin, "Maybe we could go out?"
"Out where?"
"You know Silver Point might be a small town but we can still do something fun."
I crossed my arms over my chest and raised one eyebrow, "Yeah, like what?"
"Okay, so it's a western themed pub with line dancing, booze and they even have a mechanical bull!
"So your idea is to go drinking?"
"And dancing and maybe bull riding?" Lucas laughed.
This seemed to have bad idea written all over it but in all honesty, I was bored, it was summer what's the worse that can happen?
"Okay, I'm in!"
Lucas spent the next twenty minutes calling everyone up and I tried to make myself look like I didn't permanent bed hair. My navy blue jeans were ripped and I paired that with a checkered button up and some brown ankle boots. I ran my fingers through my hair and then threw it over my shoulder. Make up was a totally different ball game, I stood there for five minutes debating whether to put it on or not.
I heard Lucas on the talking on the phone and decided to put on just a little bit. So after I finished with moisturizer, blush and mascara, I found Lucas in the living room.
"That was a surprisingly quick change."
I rolled my eyes and plopped down on the couch, "Not all woman take long to get ready."
"Well Chloe does and we're going to meet her there so I'm going to take a quick shower."
Lucas ran out the cottage and I shouted after him, "You could have told me that sooner!"
About ten minuted later Lucas came back and I had to tell myself not to stare. He also sported a plaid shirt tucked into dark jeans, the same jeans he wore the first day I met him, the same ones that I couldn't stop staring at even that day. This just goes to show that jeans do way more for men than woman, or at least i hope so otherwise I'm screwed.
"Katelyn?" Lucas said breaking my thoughts.
"What?"
Lucas smiled, "I asked if it's okay if we take my truck?"
I felt my whole face flush bright red at being caught staring, "Oh, yeah sure!"
"So Chloe and Layton will meet us there, everyone else is busy."
Lucas and I left the cottage and walked to the front after he made sure everything was locked, then he opened the door for me and I hopped into his truck. The last time I was in this truck, I was kidnapped and forced to go to the doctor. When Lucas got into the driver side I felt the whole cab shrink, trapping me with the heady scent of cedar wood and aftershave.
I held my breath, Lucas started the truck and we drove off. There was something about being alone in the dark cab with him that had my nerve endings twitching with anticipation. I was excited but heaven only knows why. Sure our dynamic shifted but into what, how would we act when reality came crashing back down and the bubble burst?
I mentally swatted the thought from my mind, tonight was about having fun and I couldn't even remember the last time I had fun. So as Lucas drove to the pub, I looked at the stars shining brightly overhead and found myself thinking that Silver Point really was a beautiful place. In the day it was a bustling little town but at night it turned into something magical. The starts shined brighter than anywhere else I've ever been.
There were a lot of cars parked outside a place called The Watering Hole and Lucas found a spot to park the truck at the far back. As soon as I got out of the truck I heard the sound of muffled country music playing and people laughing.
"So this is it?" I said when Lucas hopped out.
"I promise this is going to be fun."
I actually already knew that, the sound of the music and laughter already started sweeping me up and I couldn't help the jolt of excitement that traveled through my body. I've never done anything like this before, sure I went out of Diane a few times but those were all high end clubs back home where people didn't dance but humped on each other on the dance floor.
Inside The Watering Hole there was a long bar on left side of the room that stretched from one point of the wall to the other. Cowboy hats. horse shoes and bottles of alcohol took every single shelf space right behind the bar. On the right there was a roped off area with a read mattress on the floor and a big mechanical bull at the center without a head. A rider was trying his best to hold on but the bull bucked to the front and the rider went tumbling off onto the mattress. The crowd cheered in loud whoops and the rider took a bow after he dusted himself off. At the back of the bar there was a huge dance floor where people were doing intricate steps to an up beat country song. The lights were turned down low and I knew this was going to be a night I wouldn't soon forget.
