The Crimes of Valentine
And edict's tacked on all of Rome
On every door of every home
So none amidst their teeming mass
May any great aspersion cast,
Nor claim they knew not word of law
When thing before their face is sprawled.
So all this great command obeyed
Though heavy on their heart it weighed
And every bride-groom's bride did weep
For service king of Rome did seek,
But feudal honor bids them live
In service do to rank their give.
So all did willing go their way
To foreign fields where foes they'll slay
For sake of Rome and sake of king
No matter hardships orders bring.
And many men now went to war
In hopes for home as deeds reward.
Without the comfort gave by love
From mortal heart or God above.
And noble Rome contented stood
With smallest vice for greater good
Until a tale did reach their seat
Of secret sect amidst their streets
Who men of Roman birth did wed
Before on foreign field they bled.
So state did set to quick inquire
What foreign God this act inspired
And all who spoke on Christ behalf
That day had earned the Romans' wrath
So trap was set and snare was wove
By those who worshipped state and Jove.
To catch whoever led this band
Of those who worshipped God made man.
So plots were hatched and spies were paid
And man again by kiss betrayed
Was given up to Roman hand
Before their courts to trial stand.
