Chapter 25: Shortcut to Heaven
"No fuckin' shit, lady! Do I sound like I'm orderin' a pizza?!"
"Cavilll~ Not bad for a brat like you~"
With a smug face, Tyler slightly tilts his head after successfully reciting his favorite John McClane line—showing off to John. Folding his hands in front of him in a proud manner, he basks in the satisfaction of his performance while John chuckles appreciatively beside him.
The two of them chill in the living room—again—watching another round of the original Die Hard movie. John sits in his lazyboy, his laughter booming through the room—causing his big stomach to jiggle with each chuckle as they bicker about McClane's repeated stupid decisions. As they exchange banter, Tyler absentmindedly pets Tumba—who's been chilling beside him since the movie started.
That's when the faint sound of footsteps coming from upstairs, catching Tyler's attention. Drawing his gaze towards the staircase, Tyler catches a glimpse of you as you descend quickly. Once you notice him—as you're in the middle on the stairs just right in front of him, you halt.. and his jaw drops. Mesmerized by your presence, he keeps staring from downstairs—ignoring John as he takes in your stunning appearance.
Your hair falls in gentle waves around your shoulders, framing your face in a soft glow. You rock a flowing.. flowery Sabrina top paired with short blue jeans, looking effortlessly.. beautiful. As your dad directs a comment towards him, Tyler finds himself still momentarily speechless. He simply stares at you, a grin spreading across his face.
Getting shy of his reaction, you can't help but sheepishly grin back—awkwardly pinching your left arm as you mutter under your breath, "What?"
John finally turns to look at you—and your dad's eyes light up with pride. "My daughter~ You're so magnificent!" he remarks, a warm smile spreading across his face as he opens his arms widely for a hug. You quickly descend the last of the stairs, eager to melt into his embrace—your mom, having just finished helping you get ready, follows closely behind. Embracing you tightly, he asks, "Where are you off to all dolled up like this, Emily?"
Hesitating in his hug, you stammer, struggling to find the right words to curtain the dangerous fact that you're—
"We're going on a date!"
Your dad immediately releases you and snaps his head to Tyler, eyes widening in annoyed surprise. "What?!" he exclaims. Despite his deadly spontaneous outburst, Tyler still gazes at you in awe, ignoring the big boss' shock.
Your mom interjects with a sigh, "Oh, dear," before clarifying to your dad, "Not like—it's just a hangout babe~ Like the usual~ Just—this time, it has a 'date' theme on it.." she stutters a bit, facepalming herself before glancing at you for assurance.
Meanwhile, feeling the panic starts seeping through your skin, you tilt your head subtly, silently asking for Tyler's help. Instead, suddenly jolting from his seat, Tyler kneels before your dad as if paying respect to a king, and says,
"I will bring your daughter back before midnight, My King," Tyler proposes, kissing your dad's hand before jumping to his feet. Your dad stares at him in astonishment before turning to your mom—who's standing giddily near the stairs.
Quickly skipping to your mom, Cavill declares, "I promise I will give your daughter the best date of her life, My Queen." Your mom bursts into laughter when he kisses her hand too. Amused with this boy's antics, she can't help but to ruffle Tyler's head before hugging him tightly.
Feeling the wires start to snap back on his brain, Mr. Winters gets up from his seat and storms, "Wait—what's that supposed to mean, you brat?!"
You laugh nervously at your dad's wrath—however.. the moment you see Tyler strides to you in his casual white shirt and black shorts, you feel all those tension drift away. Finally stopping right in front of you, his never-ending grin beams through the room. As he hovers over you, you both sheepishly chuckle at each other—occasionally looking away out of nervousness.
Until eventually.. he extends his hand to you.. and in his low voice, he mutters..
"May I.. My Princess?"
Smiling sheepishly, you reluctantly give your hand to him, whispering,
"You may, My Prince."
Keeping his gaze on you, he gently brings your hand in front of his gorgeous face.. to kiss the back of your hand in sweet gentleness. He grins like the Prince Charming that he is—and if you're not in this mayhem, you probably would've swept him off his feet right here, right now. However—as reality sets in, remembering you're still in this.. living room—with a sense of urgency, you lean in to him and whisper,
"Now let's get out of here before dad grills us."
Chuckling, Tyler gives your hand a reassuring squeeze before swiftly leading you outside in a sprint. As you make your escape, your dad follows to the door—but is held back by your mom!
Outside, you notice his parents cheering from your lawn. Running to them in excitement, you hug the both of them as you muster a hi. "You look so beautiful baby Emily.." Violet praises, her eyes already glimmering with tears like you're just about to walk on the aisle. With wide eyes, you giggle and say your thank yous as Tyler scratches the back of his head sheepishly.
"Greg! Get your son away from my daughter for once?!"
As your mom continues to hold back your dad, he shouts to his bro—still struggling in your mom's swaying bear hug. Laughing at how Janet's arms are struggling to reach around his stomach even though they don't quite make it, Greg shouts, "Just let them be won't ya?! You're such a party pooper!" following everyone's bursts into laughter.
Guiding you to his dad's Defender, he makes a little jog to arrive earlier.. and opens the door for you. Amusedly confused by his over gentlemanly gesture, you laugh, "Wow! The grand gestures? Anyway—we're not gonna use your bike?"
"Well Winny.." he says with a lopsided smile. Taking your hand in his, he lifts it to his lips and presses another tender kiss to your knuckles—before with a playful bounce of his eyebrows, he exclaims,
"I'll show you what a date should be like."
As the roller coaster climbs higher.. and higher.. your squeal mingle with the rush of wind around you. Adrenaline courses through your veins as the coaster reaches its peak—and you can't help but close your eyes, bracing for the thrilling drop. Feeling a little nervous, you grip the arm handle of your seat—knuckles turning white—
When you feel Tyler's hand laces yours softly. Your eyes fly open in surprise, meeting his gaze. Seeming a little bit concerned, he checks on your perplexed face.. before a grin spreads across his face. Lightly stroking your hand, he asks,
"You good?"
At that moment, high above the ground.. it feels like you're already flying.
Feeling a surge of warmth in your chest, time seems to stand still as you stare at him, all nervousness melting away. Unable to contain your joy, you nod eagerly—a wide grin spreading across your face before letting out a delighted laugh, eyes sparkling with excitement. Reciprocating your nod, Tyler joins in with a joyful laugh of his own, the sound ringing out like music to your ears. And as the coaster speeds along its twists and turns, the sound of your laughter mingles together—echoing through the skies like the intertwining of your hands.
As you both indulge in the sweet delight of churros, the warm pastry melts in your mouth. But suddenly, your unoccupied hands brush against each other, sending a jolt of electricity through your bodies! You both freeze for a moment, feeling the awkward tension between you. Trying to play it cool, you continue walking while eating your churros—but the sensation of your fingers brushing against each other lingers in the air. Like a silent dance of uncertainty.. your hands move closer.. hesitating—before you feel his fingers intertwined with yours.
You and Tyler automatically steal a glance at each other—but once your eyes meet the two of you quickly look away! A hint of pink starts surfacing on your cheek—before a sheepish smile forms on your lips. Looking anywhere but each other, you both focus intently on your churros, pretending everything.. is delightfully normal.
However, just as you're about to take another bite, he tugs at your hand—suddenly taking you for a sprint! Caught off guard, you stumble for a moment before regaining your balance, following him blindly even though confusion paints all over your face!
Suddenly, he stops—and dashes to snatch something from a wood crate-like stall. Before embarrassment can even register, the vendor shouts in panic, "Hey!" and before you can protest, he takes off—quickly dragging you away, 'compelling' you to be his partner in crime.
Literally.
Fuming, you rant between your breaths, "W—what the hell, Ty?! We're way past that phase—we removed that rule—remember when our dads—" but as you suddenly find yourself under a floral archway, he guides you to a stop. Still breathing heavily, he gives you a lopsided grin and offers something to you—something he stole,
a Red Rose bouquet.
The seller pants in fury when she catches up to you—but without taking his glance off of you, Tyler quickly hands her a black card with a smug face—and she immediately falls silent. The seller's expression goes from enraged to utter confusion as she takes the card reluctantly. After watching the both of you back and forth, understanding dawns on her—because now she's nodding in approval, giving your gaping self a thumbs up.
Standing there—speechless, you finally redirect your attention back to the grinning Tyler in front of you. Bouncing his eyebrows smugly, he shakes the bouquet in his hand, as if trying to snap you up from your Wattpad dream.
In a sudden burst of euphoria, you rush forward—not minding the flowers, and plant a quick kiss on his cheek. A faint blush tints his cheeks as he freezes, eyes widening in astonishment. As you pull away, a shy smile tugs at his lips, and you finally accept the bouquet and say,
"Thank you dork."
Beaming with the widest grin you can manage, you gaze at him—eyes shining with happiness. Watching how your face lights up the moment you scent the flowers gets him to cloud nine. He looks down, a sheepish chuckle escaping his lips, unable to contain his own delight. Without hesitation, you move in for a big hug—wrapping your arms around him tightly. Grinning from ear to ear, Tyler embraces you back—squeezing you gently in his arms.
Between the bushes, two heads pop out like secret agents on a mission. Both wearing exaggerated sunglasses—one with lemon tea in hand, the other with large salty popcorn. For a moment, they looked like serious MIBs side to side—but once they took off their sunglasses simultaneously—revealing their wide eyes, they break off into SpongeBob and Patrick when they're swooning over Krabby Patty.
With a mischievous twinkle in their eyes, they exchange silent nods before Eve whispers, "Operation Cupid is a suc. cess!" and Wyatt nods in agreement, trying to suppress his laughter as they continue to go 007 on you and Tyler.
Suddenly, Liam's phone buzzes. As she peeks at the screen, Reed chokes on her lemon tea. Her coughs almost draw the attention from the other couple—but Liam quickly closes her mouth—and at the same time silences his phone while ducking further down into the bushes. After Liam nods to Eve in conviction, he picks up the call.
"Wyatt how are they?"
Not betting around the bush. Straight to the point. Love it. So Dominic Hunt. But maybe it's not just because it's him. It's the worry. His girlfriend's 'forced' to go on a date with someone else, goddammit?! And wanna know how cruel the world works? That someone.. is none other than his bro, Tyler Cavill.
See my point?
Making a seething sound with his mouth, he squints his eyes—pretending to think hard. Eventually.. Wyatt shows his true colors by chuckling cheekily before he replies,
"They're a natural."
"Huh? What the fuck does that mean, Wyatt?"
Having his inner demons get the best of him, Liam hangs up—hanging his bro's wonders on the ceiling. Sending Eve a playful wink before turning his attention back to you and Tyler—who's still conversing, their attention definitely on the bouquet—Wyatt says, "They're doing great. Just like I knew they would." A smile spreads across his face as he watches the two of you—and as they see you and Tyler already heading off somewhere, Wyatt and Eve exchange a knowing glance.
"Now let's have our own fun?" Eve asks in delight.
"Sounds like a plan," Wyatt replies with a grin. Getting off the bush, the two of them dust off the leaves that stick on their butt. Finally standing up—they exchange a knowing glance before casually wearing their sunglasses again. With a swift spin, they turn the other way and stride like models—arms circling around each other like Bonnie and Clyde searching for another crime to strike.
"Anyway, I've been wondering.. How the hell did you get the bottle to them?"
"I have my ways, Evie. I have my ways."
As the sun dipped below the horizon, Tyler's eyes sparkled with excitement—his left hand grips the steering wheel while the other on the gear stick. "Em," he calls, his gaze shifting between the road and to you, a playful smile dancing on his lips, "there's this place.. I've been wanting to take you to. Wanna grab some sugarcane and burgers first?"
At the mention of the holy grails, your eyes light up like the sun's last glow shining through your eyes. Immediately, you nod eagerly while cheering, "SMASH and WEEBS at the same time?! I'm so down! Let's go! Let's go!" Chuckling at your overjoyed reaction, Cavill presses the pedal, hurtling the car to drive faster.
As you arrive at your favorite street, you find yourself already standing in line at the sugarcane stall, eagerly awaiting your turn. Meanwhile, Tyler is inside the burger joint, also standing in a long line—probably because it's the weekend. Whatever, you love seeing your favorites bustling with customers.
However, before long, Tyler's already beside you with a bunch of Burger Bro's paper bags in hand. "Wait—I think I saw how long the line is—" you turn your head to him and glance at the burger joint, confirming your thoughts. The line is indeed still packed with buyers. You shift your attention back to him, to find him already bouncing his eyebrows in a brisk movement, saying,
"Guess who's already besties with a Burger Bros employee?"
"What?! How—"
"And guess who's the employee."
Shifting your attention back to the burger joint, you find Scott—waving at you from inside. "Oh my gosh! Scott works here part-time?! Since when?!" you cheer excitedly as you wave back eagerly to him.
"Since you never do WEBBS with me anymore," he teases—an eyebrow tweaked. Pouting at his response, you playfully punch him on the arm.
Realizing you have the upper hand, you fold your arms in front of you—pretending to think hard before revealing, "Then I guess it's since earlier this June," with a smirk playing on your lips.
Letting out a lopsided scoff at your win, he gives you a playful headlock. "Can we establish a pact to never, talk about our exes for the rest of our lives here?"
Struggling in his lock, he finally releases you to have his arms wrapped around you instead. "Nah, it wouldn't be fair because you have much longer line of exes than me." Scoffing, he squeezes you into another headlock—but before he can come up with another comeback, you demand from under his arms, "But seriously though, since when?"
"Since... earlier this month—I think?" he replies before releasing you once again. Nodding your head with amusement, you look at him before giggling—when a thought clouds your mind.
"Wait but why didn't you 'order and pick up' this sugarcane too?" you gesture to the standing pamphlet with their phone number for a pickup order and advise, "They even put their number on their—"
"Don't."
A puzzled look overcomes you. Slowly, you tilt your head, asking, "Huh why?"
Leaning closer to your ear, he whispers—trying to be secretive, "I have a PTSD with your favorite seller—"
"What can I help you?!"
Without even realizing it—you're already in front of the line. At the seller's shout, Tyler jumps—clinging to you like his life depended on it! Shaking your head in puzzlement, you fix yourself before saying, "S—sorry, two sugarcanes please? The usual!"
"Two sugarcanes with lemon for my favorite besties, coming right up!" the seller answered with a high pitched sales voice, causing you to beam happily—already tasting the sugarcane in your tongue.
As for Tyler..
Releasing his hands from you.. he wonders at the 360-degree flip of gesture from his latest encounter. Squinting his eyes and leaning closer to the seller while he's squeezing the sugarcane in the machine, he observes in suspicion. With normalcy, the seller gives him a wondrous smile. Feeling uncomfortable by your bestie's weird weird behavior, you grin in unease and briskly pull Cavill away from the stall.
"Here! Two sweet sugarcane for Ms. Winters and her.. old friend,"
At the seller's sarcastic burst, Tyler's eyes widens just to squint them again in skepticism. He inclines his head closer.. before you decide to grab the sugarcanes quickly and flash the seller a brief smile as a thank you.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" you whisper in urgency while dragging him away from the place. Cavill's body follows you—but his head turns back, still checking his suspicion.. to find the sugarcane seller smiling back at him—
But he suddenly mirrors him! Giving him a sharp, cynical glare. Kneading his brows in a dumbfounded validation, Tyler scoffs before shaking your body to say, "Winny—Winny! Look! Look now—!"
You turn your body around in urgency—only to see the seller smiling back at you.. and turn his attention back to everyone in the line. "What?! He's smiling sweetly just like his sugarcane, Ty!"
"Don't let him fool you!"
Rolling your eyes in exasperation, you forcefully tear yourself away from him and walk away—refusing to entertain his wild prejudice. In irritation, Tyler follows you—but his curiosity gets the better of him. Once again, he turns his head back.. to find the sugarcane seller glaring back at him—causing him to jump in surprise!
"Goddammit!"
Quickly forcing you to turn again, he shouts, "Look!"
But once you turn around, you're only met with the seller continuing to serve the line eagerly, all smiles and joy, just as he used to serve you. Glaring at Tyler wearily, you mumble, "You know Ty, maybe you've gone loco,"
"Oh for fucks sake!"
"Wait.. are we.. back home?"
Keeping silent in amusement, Tyler just shrugs. As you both step out of the car, exclaiming, "Aaaah, we're gonna camp at our usual spot, right?!" you walk eagerly to the familiar spot, steps guided by memory. He holds back a chuckle as he gathers the Burger Bros paper bags in one hand and his sugarcane in the other.
As you approach the lake.. that's when you notice something.. different—but you can't quite put your finger on it. "Uh.. is something changed or is it just me—?"
When your breath catches your throat.
The usual spot where you usually hang—now decorated. Warm twinkling lights hanging from the trees.. a picnic laid out on the ground—two cute standing candles rests in the middle. But what enchanted you the most.. is the sight of two mountain props nestled against the usual tree.
The mountains by the lake.
Just like the one you had always imagined.
