Chapter 14. The hunts' history

{Location: Midnight's dream train}(Morro's POV)

Come on.

Snap.

Dang, it. I take a breath, it's got to be at least 1 or 2 in the morning. Layla is out cold and the crew Kenneth brought are sleeping. It was actually kind of a slow night. Anyway, I need to open this door.

Kenneth said he pays well. And I seriously need money.

I grab a small lock pick, come on. It hasn't been that long since I broke....no. It has been a long time. But for some reason, this feels like second nature. I've got silk gloves, a small bag for cash and a set of lock-dang it! Not again.

I huff. Come on.

I set my tools down to sip my tea. I really should take a night off, give my voice a rest but no. I need to keep my eyes on the prize. Stay focused.

I sigh, staring at the drink, wonder what Sensei would think. Seeing how pitiful I've become. Look at me, I live in a closet, work 7 days a week, pay honestly evil and despicable people to help me find a mabey existing tomb and oh yeah, I spent all my time feeling angry. The huge red gate being open pops in my mind.

I'm tired all the time.

I'm unhappy.

And I think deep down....I have doubts.

That mabey possibly....I'm not the green ninja. If my destiny was to really be the chosen one, why is it so hard to find the tomb in the first place? I sit back against the caboose door if I was really the green ninja the golden weapons would have said so.

I close my eyes, picturing the quiet mountain. Hard training, yeah. But I felt...like I belonged a little more there then I do here. I could call it all off. Put my two weeks in, call off my searchers, break up with Layla and go home.

But...but I could be the chosen one. If this flimsy plan of what if's works out. I open my hand, feeling wind weave through them. "I'm insane for going this far. Just one more thing. I'll take only one more bad sigh and I'll stop. I'll get off this path. I promise." Now to break in to pay off my searches.

I get up on my knees, tapping the knob before sticking my lockpicks in. Clink. Click. CLICK!

The pale yellow door swings open. How about that? I gather my things, tiptoeing in while pulling out a new invention called a flashlight. I walk deeper in as I see Kenneth passed out in a chair. Remember Morro, leave no prints or trails. I carefully look for a nightstand, all the good stuff tends to be in there.

Click.

Apparently, Kenneth isn't asleep. He hums as I turn slowly. He smirks while sipping coffee, "And I'm right." He gets up, "You're a desperate man. I can tell. So, why are you stealing..." He closes the door, locking it twice before looking down on me, "From a thief?"

"Excuse me?"

"I'd assume Madame E would have told you about who made that circus." He points to my green strip of hair. He reaches out, wanting to hold it.

I step back, "I don't-"

"Nonsense. I'd assume all of the children I stole would be grown up and kicked out by now." He calmly breaths, "You're don't have any plans, right?"

"Not really...you're not going to call the cops."

He hearty chuckles, "Son, if they saw how many crime epidemics I've been involved with, my ghost would be in jail. And that job offer still stands. I like a man that gets what he needs when he needs it."

"So... The eclipse circus?"

"The thieve's ring." Kenneth turns to pour himself a glass, "I wanted to be remarkable my whole life. I was alone in my youth. Nothing and no one to help me but other street rats. The only time I truly felt like I belonged is when I'd hunt. Those rabbits never stood a change. But one day," he puts the bottle down as my instincts scream to run, "I came across a man making some beautiful gem out of thin air. Something hungry in me compelled me to take it, I waited until he fell asleep. I stole the gem. At first, it just seemed like a gem he somehow created but once the morning light touched it, a portal opened up."

"The realm crystal." Kenneth's met the first spinjutzu master?

"Glad to see the name I gave it caught on. Anyway, I dove in. Exploring the 16 realms connected to Ninjago. Well, that kind of power needed a man with a reputation behind it. I came back to Ninjago, formed a collection of thieves and thieves in training. I placed an ambitious woman named Katty Emerald in charge. And they raked in so much money...I just had to repeat it. Realm after realm, a network all stealing and working for me."

"I thought the realm crystal was buried with the first spinjutzu master." He might know. He might be my last change.

"I had to return it," he smiles with a twinkle in his eye, "But not before I learned how to cross realms myself. This train is enchanted so when we reach 88 miles per hours, we can realm jump. Anyway, I stopped stealing myself, took more to hunting. Would you like to see some of my prizes?"

I nod, feeling unsettled. The wall is elaborate, spanning with pictures and animal heads I don't recognize. Even fairy-like wings.

He points behind me, "I could go on and on for hours about each of these beauties. Found a gorgeous race in a stunning world. Tyrell. Gorgeous things, elegant, graceful and very powerful...until I introduced them to salt. At first, they were a challenge, but I just love how their wings look on my wall. Once I had my first dozen, I started getting whispers. I pop in every now and then, try to get one of each element. But those whispers became my foundation when I came back to Ninjago. It was incredible, women desired me. But I'd always pick just one per realm."

First, dude. I hope you just mean dating. If not, that's a little messed up to not have enough loyalty to stay with one woman. Second, hunting humans or human-like creatures? Is hunting a deer really that mundane?

Kenneth sips his drink, "I made sure they were a part of my circuses, and our offspring would one day lead their circus." He opens a door into another cart.

I suffer my feet while rubbing my talisman. Why do I feel so anxious? So he met a lot of women, hunts a lot and runs a interdimensional gang. He's not threating to harm me.

"Then one day, a thought struck. I remember it perfectly, I was in bed with a woman named Tessa, in Domjago. My thought, what if they grow up and take everything I worked for?" Kenneth helps me across the cable connection, leading us into another dark room. He closes it behind me while positioning me to look at something once the lights comes on. "I was nowhere near old age but my eldest son in Ninjago would be 18 soon. All of my children could band together and take away everything before it was their time."

"What'd you do?"

"I got up. That same hunger that lead me to the realm crystal, lead me at that moment. I held my knife," Click. The lights come on to show a picture of a baby's crib. The baby looking too still to be sleeping. Around the baby are pictures of a dead woman covered in bloody blankets, a rattle and the last picture of the house on fire. Kenneth pats my shoulder, "And killed Tessa and her bloody daughter. I still remember how her tiny face felt in my hand when I snap-"

I tune out. Covering my mouth.

He...he killed his own kid?

That's insane. And I thought I was nuts.

I need to leave.

This is my sign. I'm going home.

I'm going back to Sensei.

Kenneth brushs the pictuer before dragging me along, "I took her favourite toy, a rattler before finding the thrill of this hunt."

"Wh...what w...what was her name?"

"Azela." Kenneth shrugs as he shows off a new section, "I went in ascending order, next to cloud kingdom. Believe it or not, I kept a record of my children and their mothers." He smiles. He SMILES while saying this. "I'd sometimes even play them like a fiddle for a few days, before killing the mother then the child."

I shake.

Correction, he killed his children?!

I have to leave. I won't take his job and he can shove it up his rear.

Kenneth rattles off the names of his children. And for some reason, they cling to my soul.

I'm disgusted. How can anyone even think to do this?

They were children. He's sick. He's sick and twisted and pure evil.

Kenneth pauses at the end, "Interesting no? I know it's not for the faint of heart but I tell this to all my thieves. Can't be that bad?"

No, you just live with other insane people.

"I just came back from a small sabatical in Tyrell, I still have to hang those wings. And now I and my crew are hunting my eldest son." He turns me slowly to the last spot, grand. Fitted with picture frames and selves. Some already filled with a woman with black hair and steel grey eyes, holding her hand out as the wind blows the leafs.

I spot a small name written in grey, Mariah.

Kenneth looks down, folding his arms, "My first love. I let my other fifteen loves chose their child's name but my son...I picked that out. Mariah was fine with it, dropped him off with Katty to be with her party friends. She wasn't too hard to find. But her son..he went missing. And with the recent 'fireing' of the circus, he could be anywhere."

Wouldn't want to be him.

"You seem a little quiet."

"I'm just tired." I fold my arms, trying to hold in my vomit, "I'm considering moving back home. I haven't had a lot of luck on my own."

"Hunting for something yourself?"

"A little. When I was a boy, I was told I could be a great hero. But when I tried, it seems like I'm not."

"Forget them." Kenneth pours two glasses of brown liquid into small cups, "You seem like an honorable young man worthy of this title."

"It's not the worthiness." I shrug as I just want to go home now, "I'm...just not the chosen one."

"Dyestony works in strange ways." He gives me a glass, "I'd keep looking if I were you."

I take the glass. I'm just going to do the opposite of everything this guy says, "I'd love to. Money's just short now and I think I have amends to make."

"So you're not coming with me then?"

"Sorry."

"It's fine." Kenneth frowns, "I just wish things could have been different."

"Me too."

"A toast?" He raises his glass, "That we'll see each other again in better spirits?"

I tap glasses with him, "That we'll get what we need, nothing more, nothing less."

"Cheers."

I start to sip my glass, "I have to start packing soon but can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"What was your eldest son's name?"

"Oh silly me, I didn't say." I tip the glass back as Kenneth swirls his. Kenneth gets a smile on his face. I've never seen someone smile with such an insatiable hunger for anything. His eyes flicker with a greedy, insane type of light. Kenneth runs his hands through his short jet black hair, "His name is Hunter Kenneth."

I WHAT?!

I gag on nothing as I drop the glass.

He's my father?!

This disgusting, twisted human piece of slime is my f- no. I'm nothing like him.

I refuse to be anything remotely like him.

He's nothing more than a DNA doner.

Oh my gosh, he killed my mother. Who I didn't know but...I need to leave. Tonight. Get away before he figures out why I'm feeling out.

Kenneth looks concerned, "Something wrong?"

"I just rembered, I'm still a minior." Lie, I'm 23 now. 3 years since I left the monestay. I pick up the glass only to slam it into his hand, "I need to leave."

"Bood bye." He follows me out, at least he's a good host. He waves as I grip the coin tailsmen in my pocket, "It was nice getting to meet another person with this hunger. A hunger to get anything by any means."

From this moment on I'll be so selfless someone's going to have to force food into me.

I burst into Al's bar, Layla's gone. SHe left a note.

'Hey babe.

I have an emergency back in Crystal pass. My husband needs me.' Husband? 'I honestly was playing along. I don't love you. But I love you as a friend. I'm sorry to be telling you like this. If you ever, ever need anything? Feel more than free to stop by the Yu residence. (Yes I still live at my parent's house. Honestly, this economy is terrible.)

Sincerely,

Layla Black.'

Wonderful.

I DATED A MARRIED WOMAN!

I feel the same but why wouldn't she tell me.

I sigh. I'll swing by Crystal pass on my way to the caves of despair. I'm registered for a tour that I can't back out of now.

I shuffle my way to my closet. Plan, put in my two weeks, pay off searchers. Mabey I can get a decent meal. Go to my tour. Vista with Layla. Then go home.

That's a whole other can of worms that I'll deal with when I know Kenneth is on the other side of Ninjago.
