{XVII.} Gunshot Graze.

When Vanessa turned away from James and dove back into the water she felt this strange feeling. James dove under next to her, looking at her confused as she looked around for this vibe feeling she was getting of panic. When she face east, the feeling was stronger. It wasn't going the oppsite way of shore, just more towards the next town. She pushed her arms and tail to move her towards it, feeling James take her arm.

She didn't swim to far away, probably four miles the most in a couple of moments before she stopped and saw a net grabbing a hold of flounder fish. She could tell by just looking at them how they panicked swimming around in the net trying to break free. Even though they weren't actually, she could see the cry for help in their eyes.

Vanessa rose up to the surface with James as she looked at the familiar boat of Raphael family. His two uncles were chatting amongs themselves, completely oblivious of the two mermaid only half a mile away.

"Vanessa, you can them can't you?" James asked. She nodded without turning to look at him and he breathed out heavily, "Oh thank God, I thought I was going crazy. We should help them, shouldn't we?"

She took one last look at the boat before nodding and they both went back into the water. Swimming over towards the net, she grabbed onto it. James swam up beside her, trying to rip the net but it was strong. She knew she needed a knife.

She felt the net move and she released it. The flounder inside inside also panicked, swimming around quickly. She quickly grabbed a hold of it, tugging harder and hard.

She saw something in the corner of her eyes and she looked at James to see his hands gripping on the knife freeze up. He heavily glared at the freezing net with a hard focus until he gave out a cry and the piece of frozen net shadders like glass. James eyes widen when Vanessa did and they looked at each other only for a second before grabbing each end of the net and ripped it more open as the fish swam out as quick as they could. Even when the net went to the surface, many of them jumped out.

A big smile broke out onto Vanessa face as many of them swam around them with these happy vibes as if they were thanking them and happily swam away.

Something flew into the water with a whoosing noise near Vanessa that made her jerk. Another thing whooshed in and then another one before she realized it was bullet. Out of reaction her arms flew up as if her arms would protect her from the bullets. More and more around them both before James grabbed her arm and pulled her arm but as she moved a bullet grazed her arm. She cried out, pulling her arm away from James and she put her hand over the bleeding scartch. She turned her head and was able to see Raphael uncles trying to look in the water. One of them pointed near her and she gasped.

James grabbed her and made her swim deeper into the water, a bit of her tail popping out the surface as they swam deep and away.

The girls worriedly crowded around Vanessa in the garage as they apologized for not being there to protect her. Kyoko wrapped her arm up even though it wasn't bleeding anymore. It more hurt like a bruise after getting a shot from the doctors.

"I'm fine, I'm fine." she said to them. She forced a smile to reassure them, "Really, I am. I would do it again if that meant the fish got out the net. Thanks for the concern but there's no reason to be."

Hasina frowned as she wrapped her arm around her, "We shouldn't have left our queen, our jobs is to help and protect you."

Vanessa chuckle, "Here I thought it was my job to protect you. Girls, seriously I am fine. It was just a scartch and I still here aren't I? To relax."

Alia pouted, "We promise to make sure nothing harms you again though. We need you."

Tavia nodded, "Yes, you were the one to give us a reason to be in the sea again. To get out of the arctic one."

Ninda rubbed Vanessa other arm, "We just don't wanna lose you, Queen Vanessa. You do gotta protect us but it's our job also to protect you. In any kind of way, no matter what. Even if our lives become in danger."

Vanessa frowned, "No, no I wouldn't want any of you to get hurt because of me. To--to die just because of you."

"It's not 'just' because of you." Kyoko said. "Queen Vanessa, it is because of you, because of who you are to us. It wouldn't be for nothing. If dying for our queen is how we end, well it'll be the greatest honour to ever happen. Because it wouldn't be for nothing."

Vanessa looked at all the girls to see they were serious. She forced them a smilea and hugged them even though she knew no matter what she doesn't want any dying because of her.

Vanessa yawned as she climbed into bed. Adalyn happily walked into the room with a big smile on her face, holding something behind her. Vanessa arched her eyebrow, "What? What do you got there?"

Adalyn pulled the dress out from behind her to show her a blue floral high neck sundress. It was really beautiful and stunning look. "Ta-da! Look what I made for you. Isn't it beautiful!"

Vanessa eyes widen as she pulled the blanket off her and walked over to Adalyn. She touched the soft fabic dress, not taking her eyes away from the beautiful home made dress. "Oh, my god. It's so beautiful, Adalyn! Thank you!" she said she hugged her. "How though! I didn't know you were so good at sewing and these kind of things."

Adalyn shrugged as she smiled happily, "Oh it's no big deal. Before when I was human in another life I did it allot. I was rusty at first but quickly got in the routine again. I stopped at a store on my way home and patched this up after seeing a similar dress in a magazine. I was so focused in finishing it, that's why I didn't noticed when you and the girls returned. I'm sorry about that to, Nessa."

"It took you only a few hours to do this?" she asked, gasping. "Wow, you're good."

Adalyn giggled, "Try it on! Wanna make sure it fits right." Adalyn helped her get into the dress that was a bit big but Vanessa loved it like that. She wasn't a fan of tight clothes so it was perfect as she looked in the mirror happily. "Look like a queen." she said behind Vanessa.

Raphael

Raphael walked into his house and he saw James sitting out in the hallway behind the wall from the dinning hall. He sat up straight when he saw Raphael and brought his finger up to shh Raphael. James waved for him to come over and Raphael arched his eyebrow but walked over.

"I swear Linda, I wasn't seeing things!" he heard his uncle say to his aunt. "I saw one of them! My grandfather wasn't crazy, their real." Raphael arched his eyebrow as he looked at James confused before looking away. "Do you know what a discovery this would be if we only hit it somewhere to stop it! We had an extra net, we could have caught it! It would have been amazing!"

"Have a picture? Or any kind of evidence?" his mother asked. "You sure you guys weren't seeing things? Probably just hungry and hot from the sun."

"We're being serious!" his other uncle said. "Maybe it's still around, we should be out there not here. We don't know when it's gonna leave! All these mysterious things happening finally have an answer! Maybe there's more of them, Hec! We could be rich!"

There was a loud bang on the table with his father voice following, "Stop it you two! We heard enough crazy tales like this from grandpa! He was an old man, they like to tell stories. Don't get ahead of yourselves."

Raphael walked around the wall to see his family at the dinning table. They all looked at him surprised.

"Raphael, we didn't hear you come in." his mom said.

"Yeah, you're missing your uncles talking about their amazing day." his dad said, rolling his eyes. "Apparently they found a mermaid."

Raphael eyes widen as he leaned against the frame of the entrance as he stuffed his hands in his jean pockets, "Really?"

His uncle Hector stood up quickly as he pointed at him, "Look, Raphael believes us! He looked interested. You believe us, right?"

His other uncle stood up, "Rah, it was so amazing! I could see her very well from the water but I'm sure she was gorgeouse! Her tail was blue and she had long blonde hair. Something you see from pictures!"

His dad snorted, "Long blonde hair?" he questioned as he stood up chuckling and walked pasted his uncles to go near the kitchen, "Maybe you saw Vanessa." he sarcastically said. Raphael forced himselves to chuckle along but had a feeling his dad was right.

He walked around the wall, grabbing James by his shirt, and dragged him out to the front porch. He made sure they were down far on the porch for no one to hear before letting him go, "Wanna tell me something?" he asked glaring at James.

James lowered his head before sighing, "While on the way home, Vanessa and I found a group of fish in a net--your family net. We saved them but then one of your uncles in frustration grabbed a gun and started shooting inside the water because he thought it was some fish breaking the nets these last few weeks. Well one of them hit Vanessa- " he said, making Raphael eyes widen as his blood went cold"-she's fine! It only grazed her arm and the girls were quick to patch her up even though it quickly stopped bleeding. She's safetly at home now."

Raphael turned a little as his fingers ran across his hair, "Oh god, so it was Vanessa my uncles saw."

"They saw her but doesn't know it's her." James said. "Vanessa thinks it's best you just spell them with that crazy mermaid magic to make them forget what they saw today."

Raphael breathed out heavily, "I haven't perfected that yet." he said. "And it seems like allot of my family knows what my uncles seen. It'll take me awhile to do that. Don't you know how to do that yet? Vanessa easily learned it quicker because of her abilities."

He threw his arms up, "I haven't practiced anything since I won't be like this forever."

Raphael nodded as he looked away from James, "Right, that's right." he said, more to himself. He walked away with his hands in his pockets, "Well that's good. If Vanessa gonna risk her life, it should come with a good cost." he said as he pulled out his phone to text Vanessa.

Vanessa

When Vanessa woke up, she found Adalyn gone from the other side of the bed. Adalyn was an early bird though. She sat up, scartching her head. She touched her bandaid arm, pulling the gauze down to reveal an unblemished heal arm. She rubbed her arm, happy it was heal so her dad wouldn't freak.

She swung the blanket off and got off the bed. She threw her hair up before walking out of her room yawning. She went down the stairs ready to get something to eat and go out to the girls. The festival was around five but Vanessa wanted to spend time with the girls in the water so they wouldn't feel iffy later around many humans again.

Vanessa walked into the kitchen where she found her dad and Adalyn. Their arms locked together, their mouth pressed against each other as Adalyn leaned against the counter. Taken back, Vanessa gasped without meaning to. She couldn't stop it though as it already came out.

Both Adalyn and her father both jerked in suprise as they pulled away from each other. They all stared eye widen at each other but soon Vanessa couldn't keep her cold eyes off Adalyn knowing it was h34 fault.

"Vanessa." her dad breathed out. "You're awake early." he said, slightly concern that she just caught them kissing! Her dad believes Adalyb a relative from her mom side! He shouldn't be kissing Adalyn!

Vanessa walked around her dad, grabbing Adalyn arm and dragged them out of the kitchen onto the back porch. She turned to Adalyn coldly, "What the Hell were you doing Adalyn? Why? Why!"

Adalyn frowned, "Because I wanted to."

Vanessa scoff, "No! I told you not to ever try to get involve with my father and you still try it! How you do it anyways? He was head over heels for Anita and believed you were a relative."

Adalyn frowned, "I. . .I got one of the girls to easre that and make it believe I was an older friend of yours who you thought was really beautiful and attracted to."

Vanessa mouth dropped, "You...no! How dare you Adalyn? You can't make my dad have feelings for you. That's so wrong. You two aren't meant to be with each other?"

Adalyn eyes got hard a little, "Well why not? It not like your dad to old for me. I'm the older one! And I deserve to be happy again! If I gonna be human forever again, I should be with someone who I like and think amazing."

Vanessa scoff, "Find someone else! Not my father."

Adalyn huffed, "What is the big deal? I'm a good woman, I could treat him right. Take care of him, love him, feed him. I know how to take care of him. We could get married, have a few kids, and be happy together."

Vanessa almost lost her breath, "M-married? Children? No matter what Adalyn you look younger than him! No one will see it as right. Yes older man do date younger girls but my father won't be that! He's good with Anita, he actually liked her. Anita didn't need mermaid magic to do that."

Adalyn looked hurt now as she frowned, knowing it was true. Her father wouldn't have fell for Adalyn without the help of the enchanted glamour. Tears swelled Adalyn eyes when Vanessa opened the back door and stepped out.

"Vanessa, I can explain. I know she's your friend but it just happened. You shouldn't be mad at her, be mad at me. I kissed her first." he said. Adalyn fought the tears back before walking inside the house going around her father. Her father looked confused now as he looked inside before looking back at Vanessa.

Vanessa ran her fingers through her hair in frustration before walking over to her dad and erased all memory of him being attracted to Adalyn and them kissing. She turned it all back to him believing Adalyn was a relative.
