17: Tell Me the Truth?

Rapunzel slowly drifted out of the darkness. It smelled like cookies and pine needles wherever she was. Where is here? She could hear voices in the background; four women and three men. Her head painfully turned to the left, drawn to hear their conversation, but all she could make out was hushed mumbling. Hmm mother wouldn't like that.

She attempted to open my eyes but they didn't seem to want to cooperate. After struggling for a few seconds they finally opened.

What Rapunzel could see was very familiar. Pink walls. A white dresser and vanity. The bed she was laying in had a cream colored comforter. It was her bedroom...in North's workshop. How did I get here?

Her subconscious wandered to the events before she fell asleep. The four came to rescue them--her and Kristoff. They thought Kristoff was dead but he turned out to be alive. Pitch appeared and nightmares started attacking. Kristoff got cut on his arm, so she went to heal him quickly, but something hit her in the back of the head.

"We can wipe her memory once we get her back!" Jack yelled, interrupting her thoughts.

"He's right," said Elsa, "We have to tell her. She may have seen or remembered Pitch mentioning it."

"I can change her and that evil woman's memories..." Tooth mumbled, trailing off.

North sighed, "Fine. Wait until Hiccup is awake first...he can help explain better." His Russian accent was thick in annoyance, something she didn't hear often from the jolly man.

"I already am." Came Hiccup's grumbly voice.

"Oh my Gods, Hiccup, please don't ever do that to me again!" Rapunzel couldn't recognize that voice, but she could tell that it was a woman's.

"Astrid? What are you doing here?" Hiccup asked. That's Hiccup's girlfriend right?

"North said he felt that something bad was going to happen so he sent me and the gang to help you out. And I'm glad he did, I don't think you would have been able to hold out much more without us." She answered.

"We woulda been fine." Merida said sharply. "Now let's go. We need ta tell blondie da truth."

Tell me the truth? Why do people keep saying stuff about the truth? What truth? Has my entire life just been a lie?

The door creaked open to reveal the Winter Spirit. "Hey Rapunzel, good to see you're awake." He walked further into the room followed by Elsa, Hiccup, Merida, and to Rapunzel’s surprise, Astrid. She looked exactly the same as when they were in Berk all those months ago.

"How are you feeling?" Elsa inquired in her gentle voice. She smiled as she stood next to my bed with all the others. Rapunzel glanced down for a second and see that Elsa and Jack are holding hands.

Rapunzel smiled back at her. "For being hit in the head, surprisingly fine. Thank you, Elsa."

"You were hit in the head too?" Hiccup questioned. He was slightly behind Elsa, to the right.

"Yes."

"Well at least I wasn't the only one." He seemed to smile to himself.

Elsa created five chairs out of ice to surround Rapunzel’s bed. As always the ice was carved with intricate designs. Snowflakes and swirls decorated their surfaces. Each person sat down in a chair. Elsa took the seat closest to me on the left side, Jack sitting next to her. Their chairs were close enough to each other, so they are still holding hands. Merida sat across from Elsa with Hiccup at her side. Astrid takes the seat at the foot of my bed.

"Lass dere's somedin' we need ta tell ya--" Merida began.

Jack continued for her, "We just need you to promise you'll stay calm."

"Because this is very important--" Added Elsa.

"And we need your help." Hiccup finished.

Rapunzel sighed. "I had a feeling this was coming." She didn't want to rush into things but she needed to know the truth. Something about her life had always felt off, and now they're going to tell her what it was. "Okay, I promise. Now please tell me."

They exchanged glances, almost as if the four of them were begging for someone to start. Astrid studied them the same way Rapunzel did. It could've been hours that passed before any words were spoken, but they finally came out.

"Rapunzel...we have no idea where we should even start." Elsa said. "This is going to be difficult for you to understand--we barely understand what's going on. So for now we just need you to listen and obviously stay calm. Can you do that?"

She nodded my head. What in the name of Máni is this all about? Her insides screamed.

"See, this is about your family. Not Mother Gothel, your real family." Hiccup began. "Rapunzel the night you were born, Gothel kidnapped you for your hair. She had been using the flower, that your real mother ingested, to keep herself young for hundreds of years. That's why she doesn't want you to leave your tower, she's afraid that you'll find out about your family."

Rapunzel tried to hold the tears back as she swallowed hwr saliva. She isn't my mother. She doesn't--never has--loved me... "Who are my real parents?" She choked out.

"My aunt Primrose and uncle Thomas," Elsa replied. "King and Queen or Corona."

That took her even more by surprise. My parents are royal! How have they not found me? Then it hit her...maybe they never looked. Maybe they didn't care about her. Maybe they never even wanted her to begin with.

"I--I'm a princess?"

Elsa smiled again. "Rightful heir to Corona. And my and Anna's cousin." Of course, Elsa did just say that Rapunzel's parents are her aunt and uncle. That must be why they looked so similar too.

"But lass, dis isn't everyting we need ta tell ya," Merida frowned.

"What else is there?" She asked. Confusion ripped through her until she remembered them talking in the hallway. They said something about Pitch too...and changing someone's memories.

"Rapunzel you found out about your family three years ago." Jack stated. If I found out about them then why don't I remember it? He seems to read her mind. "The reason you don't remember it is because it hasn't really happened yet. Pitch created a time machine and kidnapped you from the past. We have no idea why he brought you here...But we do know that it's not for anything good. The Rapunzel that's supposed to be alive during this time is still here, as well, which shouldn't be possible--"

Even though Elsa was supposed to be proper, she interrupted Jack. "What we really need to know is if you recall Pitch saying anything about his plans around you."

"Do ya remember anyting Pitch may 'ave said or dun that was out of da ordinary or ya believed was suspicious?" Merida questioned.

Staring at Merida, Rapunzel racked her brain for a moment. Did he do or say anything random and suspicious? "Well he did keep asking if I knew the truth behind my nickname that mother--I mean--Gothel calls me. But now I guess he was just making remarks about me not knowing about my real parents."

"There's nothing else that comes to mind?" Astrid asksed.

Rapunzel shook her head, "No, sorry. But maybe you could ask Kristoff? Pitch was around him more than me."

"We plan on it once he's awake." Hiccup said.

Elsa stood up, "You should rest more Rapunzel. It's been an exhausting few days for you." The rest of them got up and left through the door. "I'll be back to check on you after we speak with Kristoff. Rest well." With that she exited as well.

How am I supposed to sleep after what they just told me?

But despite wanting to know more about all she just discovered, she found myself drifting asleep due to boredom.
