14: What They're About

Merida woke up to the sun streaming through the tent and onto her face. An arm was on her torso. She quickly turned around to look at the person behind her. Realizing that it was only Hiccup, she sighed in relief. She watched him while he slept, once in a while his mouth twitched up into a smile.

Lucky him. Only gets good dreams; no nightmares ever. Or so it seems... Merida thought to herself. She had another nightmare that night, however, didn't remember waking up.

Hiccup must have heard her screaming, come in, and tried to wake her up.

Hiccup groaned and slowly opened his eyes; they land on Merida and his face filled with worry. His grip around her waist tightened, his emerald green eyes a pleading her to tell him. Tell him what the nightmares are about. That's all he wanted to know.

"Merida I'm worried about you." He began, "Please tell me what they're about?"

She knew this was coming. She couldn't even try to hide it anymore.

"Yu. They're about yu, " Her voice cracked on the last word, her eyes tearing up.

He nodded for my to continue and she did.

"Ya were da only real friend I've ever 'ad, even if it was only fer a few days. The first nite after I saw ya again, I was angry, but slept fine. But after we went ta Berk, and I saw 'ow 'appy ya were...the nightmares started cummin'." A tear slipped down her face.

Merida moved her hand to wipe it away but Hiccup beat her to it, his callused hand wiping it away. She sat up and and hugged her legs close to her chest. Hiccup sat up as well but crossed his legs. She closed her eyes and start speaking again, "That first nite when I came inta yer room the nightmare wasn't that bad. It was about ya yelling at me, saying ya couldn't trust me, and that ya never really were ma friend."

His looked a her with empathy, "Merida--"

But she didn't want to hear what he had to say so she acted as if she didn't hear him.

"After a few weeks, yu started hitting me in da nightmares. I knew dey weren't real because ya promised ta be ma friend. That's why I went inta yer room so much. It proved to me that ya didn't hate me and that no matter 'ow much we yell at each other, ya will always be ma friend. It's also why ah kept cummin' with ya ta North's."

Hiccup moved to sit by her side. He swiped the tears from Merida's face and enfolded her in a hug. Her head buried into his shoulder and she couldn't help it, she started sobbing.

Why didn't I tell him before now?

"Merida I could never hate you," He whispered stroking my hair.

Hiccup and Merida took down their tents and loaded them onto Toothless. They decided to let Elsa sleep in since being a queen can be stressful and all. But they didn't know where Jack was. Usually he would be right outside of where Elsa was sleeping until she woke up. However, Elsa's sleeping and he wasn't there.

They were now done packing up everything they could so she decided to ask Elsa if she knew where Jack was.

Merida walked over to Elsa's tent, "Elsa do ya know--"

She stopped when she saw Elsa sleeping--Jack laying right next to her. Jack's arms were around her waist, her hands and head wetre resting on his chest. The blankets on top of them were covered in a thin layer of frost.

Merida tried to slowly step away, hoping that Jack wouldn't notice her. But her plans to not be seen were soiled when she stepped on a twig.

Jack snapped head up and his eyes widen when he saw the red head attempting to escape.

"Merida wait a second!" He whispered. Nodding her head, she left the tent, waiting for him to come out.

Hiccup came to stand next to her, "So? Do we know where he is?" Merida glared at him and pointed to the tent. Right on cue Jack crawled out of Elsa's tent with his staff in hand. "Never mind..." Hiccup mumbled.

They stared at Jack, waiting for an answer.

He leaned against his staff and shrugged, "She couldn't sleep last night because she's still worried about Anna. So she wanted me to talk to her to help her fall asleep."

"That's it?" Hiccup asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Um what else would have happened?" Jack questioned, slowly dragging out every word.

"What d' ya think." Merida stated in an obvious tone.

His jaw dropped. "Why would you--I wouldn't--we didn't--She was--"

Just then Elsa came out of her tent. Their gazes turned on her. Her hair was in its usual French braid with snowflakes. She's wearing a bell bottomed dress completely made of snow that goes down to her feet. The top is off the shoulder with long sleeves.

"Why so red Jack?" She smirked.

Jack's jaw was still wide open, nearly touching the ground. His face now flushed a deep crimson color as he gawked at her. "Um," he cleared his throat and stopped staring at Elsa, "We should get going."

"I agree. The sooner we find Rapunzel and Kristoff, the sooner Anna will stop worrying."

"'Ow do ya know she's worryin'?" Merida asked.

Elsa sighed, "One, because she worries about everything. And two, because Kristoff is the love of her life. She probably hasn't slept or eaten anything, even chocolate. So the sooner we find him and Rapunzel, the better."

Hiccup nodded in agreement, "Alright, then let's get going." He whistled for Toothless to come over. The dragon quickly made its way over to them. Jack and Elsa took down the last tent and load it up.

Soon after that Elsa was in Jack's arms, "Ready Snowflake?"

Hiccup climbed onto Toothless and held his hand out to Merida. She accepted it, mounting the dragon and wrapping her arms around Hiccup's torso. A heartbeat later they took off into the sky.

After two hours of flying, Jack pointed at something on the ground. "Over here!" Toothless landed on the thinly snow-covered ground next to an old, wooden, broken bed frame. "Hang on." Jack said, setting Elsa down he touched his staff to the ground. He waved his hand and it started snowing heavily.

Hiccup and Merida get off of Toothless. She grabbed her cloak out from one of the sacks and wrapped it around herself.

"Why'd ya make it snow moore?" She accused, stomping over to grandpa.

Jack shrugged, "Because this place needed more snow. It didn't feel wintery enough..." He grinned. "Now let's go."

"Go where? I don't see anything." Hiccup looked around, confusion in his tone.

Jack gestured to the bed frame, "When you were a kid where did the monsters always hide before you went to sleep?"

The four walked over to the bed and peered down. Underneath the bed was a hole just big enough for a person to fit through.

"Under the bed." They said together.

"That is where we will go."

Jack pushed Hiccup down the hole first--Hiccup screamed. Before Merida could so much as think to say anything, Jack shoved her into the hole as well. She screamed as darkness consumed the world. The last thing she could vaguely make out was Jack pushing Elsa into the hole, and him entering after.
