13: I Love You
Jack noticed the other three were getting tired so they stopped in the forest for the night. Hiccup and Merida went to get fire wood and some fish to eat from a nearby stream. Elsa and Jack sat there awkwardly, waiting for them to come back.
The sky was dark and the stars shone brightly. Jack lay on the grass and gazed at them.
"What are you doing?" Elsa asked with a hint of annoyance. She was sitting on a log a few feet away from him. "We should set up the tents." She stood up and started walking toward the bags.
"Looking at the stars. You should join me, you can't always see this many stars."
Elsa walked over to his right side, the cape of her favorite dress was trailing behind her. She usually wore the dress twice a week. "Come on we are going to set up the tents before they get back." She grabbed his hand and tried to pull him up, but he yanked her down instead. "Jack!" Elsa squealed. Her head was on my shoulder and her arms were pushing him away from her. Jack's hand that was on her waist kept her from moving, though.
"Can't you ever learn to relax and have some fun?"
"No." She huffed, "Now would you let go of me and help with the tents?"
He mocked her voice, "No. Now would you relax and look at the stars?" His voice changed back to his own instead of his impression of her. "Look up and tell me what you see."
"Why?"
"Just do it, Els."
Elsa rolled her eyes but looks up. His hand was still on her hip but she didn't seem to care, she was too busy smiling at the stars. "They're beautiful. I've never been able to see them well from my window in Arendelle." She gaped. Jack remembered what she said about being locked away from society for thirteen years. "But when I built my ice castle..." Her smile grew wider. "I was able to be free and see everything."
Every time Jack looked at her he felt something. Something different and new. Something he never felt before. If it was what he thought it was--if it was love that he was feeling--then he shouldn't be letting himself fall in love with a mortal.
But then he thought back to what Máni told them about the four dying to become immortal and guardians.
So he had to tell her...Jack had to tell Elsa he loved her--this tim when she wasn't sleeping. Because now he knew that he could. Now he knew everything would work out in the end...right?
"Elsa?"
"Yes, Jack?" She turnned her head away from the stars and her light blue eyes stared into him. It feels almost as if she knew what he was going to say.
Jack took a deep breath due to his sudden nervousness. "I need to tell you that..." I can't do this! "Well..."
Here it goes! "I lo--"
"I love you too, Jack." His gaze flickered down to Elsa, a curious look in his eyes. She smiled lightly, "Next time you don't want someone to hear something, make sure that they are actually sleeping first."
So she was awake last night when I put her in her bed... Her face was less than an inch from his, "I love you, Elsa."
Jack moved a stray lock of her hair behind her ear. He leaned close to her soft lips just they just brushed each other when--
"We're back!" Hiccup called. Elsa and Jack quickly pulled apart and stood up. Jack leaned against his staff so he didn't look suspicious. Hiccup was carrying firewood and so was Toothless--but on his back. Merida held a basket of fish. "Jack, mind giving me a hand?" Hiccup grunted. He was holding way more wood than the scrawny kid could handle.
"Uh sure." Jak set down the staff, briskly walked over to him and took some wood, setting it down in the small circle of rocks they had created earlier. Hiccup commanded Toothless to start the fire. The dragon's mouth shot out fire, logs suddenly ablaze. Merida placed the fish down nearby and helped Elsa set up the three tents.
Once the tents were set up and the wood off of Toothless, the four sat around the fire. Each of them held a long stick with a fish speared on the end that hung above the fire.
"Who's sharin' da one tent?" Merida asked.
"I don't sleep so no one needs to share." Jack responded, twisting the stick so the fish cooked on the other side.
"Oh, ah fergot." She said.
Hiccup and Merida entered a hushed conversation. Jack looked at Elsa who sat to his right on the same log as him. She was frowning as she stared into the fire. "What's wrong, Snowflake?" He asked, genuinely concerned.
"Huh?" She looked up from her trance, "Oh. I'm just thinking about Anna; how much I miss her... I'm finally not afraid of hurting her, and I have to leave her. Granted she isn't alone, she has Olaf while we're finding Kristoff, but I still feel like a terrible sister." Elsa sighed.
"Hey," Jack scooted closer to her and and put his arm around her waist, drawing her closer to him. "Anna understands. Keep in mind you had to leave to find her fiánceé."
"Fiánceé?" She looked up at Jack's face, her's scruntchingn up in confusion.
Oh no, no, no! I promised Anna I wouldn't tell her! How can I cover this up? Oh my Máni what am I going to do? "Did I say fiánce? I meant suitor..." Jack shrugged it off as if it were an accident, hoping she wooldn't notice what had actually happened last week.
"Oh." She dropped the subject just like that. By her tone he didn't think she believed him but she never said otherwise. They entered a silence, not awkward yet not comfortable.
"What else is bothering you, Elsa?" Jack asked after a few minutes. She pulled her fish away from the fire.
"Do I have to tell you?"
He shook his head, "No. But whatever it is seems to be worrying you, and I want to make sure you're okay."
She didn't respond. They sat there silently eating their fish. He listened to Merida and Hiccup's conversation, from across the fire.
"I'm not tellin' ya at this moment, Hiccup." Merida groaned.
"Why not? Hiccup pushed.
"It's about becoming a guardian." Jack stared into Elsa's eyes, trying to read her expression. All he got was emptiness.
She stared down at her hands, "I don't want to become a guardian if it means I have to die and...and leave Anna. I can't do that to her, I just got her back. She needs me. She needs me to take care of her," her voice cracked on that last word.
"Elsa," Jack lifted her chin up and saw the tears frozen on her cheeks. He hugged her close to his chest, her head buried into the crook of his neck, while she silently cried. "Elsa answer me honestly..." Her tear stained face looked up at him. "Does Anna really need you as much as you say, or is it you that needs her? Because Anna is an adult that can take care of herself--"
"We need each other, Jack!" Elsa snapped. What was once saddness was now anger. "And I'm not going to be able to protect and help her if I die and she doesn't believe in me!" Hiccup and Merida stopped talking to watch Elsa. "I'm going to sleep," Elsa said coldly, walking into the tent farthest to the right.
Merida and Hiccup came to sit on either side of Jack.
"What did ya say ta 'er ta make 'er mad?" Merida interrogated.
"We know it's something significant so don't even try to tell us it nothing." Hiccup continued. Jack sighed, resting his head in his hands. His elbows were propped up on his knees. "We're waiting..."
"I said something stupid." He answer simply, not wanting to tell them what he actually asked.
"We know that." Merida rolled her eyes. "But what was the stoopid thing that ya said?"
Well they'll find out sooner or later, "I asked if she needed Anna more than Anna needed her."
"Nice one..." Hiccup said sarcastically. "Did you seriously say that?" He shouted suddenly. Jack's head popped up and he nodded like a scolded dog, "Oh my Gods! You can't say something like that to Elsa!"
"She's veery sensitive about 'er relationship with Anna!" Merida agreed. "We all know yer stoopid but ye can't be that stoopid!" She waited a moment before yelling again, "Ahh! Ya need to fix dis before da blizzard starts."
❅ ❅ ❅ ❅ ❅
Merida and Hiccup went to sleep once they were done scolding at Jack. He lay on his staff above Elsa's tent, once again looking at the stars. "Jack?" Elsa called from behind him. He turnned around to see her, tears were still frozen on her cheeks.
Jack drifted down in front of her, "Elsa I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have said such terrible things. Will you please forgive me?"
She stood there studying him for the longest time. And it was killing him not knowing what was on her mind.
"Under one condition," Elsa smiled gently but it disappeared as soon as it came.
"Anything." Jack responded without thinking. Why would I even question it? I would do anything for her because...I love her.
