Ch. 6 Dinner

Elizabeth and Professor Kirke walked on the West Wing. The two conversed with one another, wanting to get to know each other.

" You may not remember me. But the last time I saw you was in July 1932, when your youngest sister, Lucy, was born. I was 44, you were eleven, Peter was 5, Susan was 3, and Edmund was 1," Professor Kirke says.

Elizabeth looked surprised to hear Professor Kirke visited her family when she was eleven when Lucy was born. She frowned, feeling horrible that she didn't remember him.

" No need to feel sad and guilty that you don't remember me. You were only 11. And it has been almost nine years since I last saw you and your siblings. Naturally, you wouldn't remember me," Professor Kirke reassured.

" What have you been doing these past nine years?" Elizabeth asked, looking curious.

" Mainly researching and experimenting. I want people to know that other worlds exist and that we shouldn't be afraid of what is from the beyond and to at least coexist with them," Professor Kirke responded.

" I know some wouldn't mind coexisting while others will mainly be afraid and not support your ideas," Elizabeth looked forward and saw her younger siblings approaching the Foyer from the East Wing.

Lucy looked forward and smiled when she saw her eldest sister approach the Foyer from the West Wing.

" Lizzie!" She runs towards her eldest sister and hugs her tightly, wrapping her arms around her waist.

Professor Kirke smiled at the two sisters.

" Did you unpack and make yourself comfortable in the room?" Elizabeth asked.

Lucy let go of her eldest sister and nodded.

" Yes! Susan helped me," She responded, and her eyes blinked when she saw Professor Kirke beside them.

" Oh! Hello," She greeted, looking at Professor Kirke shyly.

' I need to unpack after dinner,' Elizabeth internally says.

" Lucy. Peter. Susan. Edmund. I would like for you all to meet Professor Digory Kirke. Our Guardian during our stay here in Devon," She introduced Professor Kirke to her younger siblings.

The three siblings looked surprised to hear that the older male next to their eldest sister was their Guardian, Professor Kirke.

" Huh. He doesn't look like an Evil Witch," Edmund blurts out, causing Peter and Susan to look at him with mixed emotions.

" Edmund!" Peter and Susan hissed at their younger brother.

Professor Kirke amusingly chuckled.

Edmund realized what he said and looked at his shoes bashfully.

" You seem friendly," Lucy smiled.

" Thank you," Professor Kirke smiled. " And no, I am not an Evil Witch like the White Witch," He reassured.

Elizabeth looked at Professor Kirke knowingly.

" The White Witch?" Susan raised an eyebrow.

Lucy looked at Professor Kirke curiously.

" A character from a book I wrote," Professor Kirke merely responded.

" You are an author?" Peter asked, looking at Professor Kirke curiously.

" Yes. I am also a researcher. Your father was one of my World Literature students," Professor Kirke smiled while looking at Peter fondly since the younger boy looked so much like Abraham.

Susan smiled, happy that her father loved World Literature like herself.

" Shall we," Professor Kirke motioned the five siblings to the stairs that lead to the Foyer.

" Let's go eat! I am starving," Edmund runs down the stairs, excited to eat dinner.

" Edmund! Remember what Mrs. MaCready said. Watch your manner," Susan follows her younger brother.

" What are we going to eat?" Lucy asked while walking between Professor Kirke and her eldest sister.

" Emmanuel said he'll make us broccoli and cheese soup, steak with steamed veggies and mashed potatoes, and a fruit cup and vanilla ice cream for dinner and dessert," Professor Kirke recalled.

" Sounds delicious, Sir," Peter smiled.

" Broccoli," Lucy pouted.

" I don't like Broccoli," She shakes her head.

" They are small. So, it should be easy for you to eat them," Professor Kirke reassured.

Lucy looked at Professor Kirke thoughtfully and nodded.

Elizabeth smiled, thinking Professor Kirke was sweet when he was with her younger siblings.

She follows Professor Kirke and her younger siblings to the dining room. She watched Professor Kirke stand near the head of the table to the right and pulls the chair back.

" Elizabeth. You may sit here," Professor Kirke smiled.

Elizabeth nodded, walked towards the chair, and sat down. She felt Professor Kirke push the chair so that she could be close to the table. She watched him do the same thing for Lucy, who sat to her left, and Susan, who sat to Lucy's left.

Peter and Edmund sat on the left side, with Peter sitting across from Elizabeth and Edmund sitting across from Lucy.

Servants entered the dining room and put a plate of food before Professor Kirke and the five siblings.

" Thank you for the food!" The Pevensie siblings smiled, grabbed their forks or spoons, and started eating dinner.

Thirty minutes later, everyone finished eating their dinner. Professor Kirke decided to tour the five siblings around the Manor, which they agreed to since they wanted to get to know their new home.

The five siblings were in awe of the Manor.

Elizabeth and Lucy thought the Greenhouse was beautiful and agreed to have tea there with Professor Kirke, occasionally keeping them company. Edmund and Peter thought the Game Room was fantastic and knew they would spend their time there. Susan found the Library beautiful and was motivated to read as many books as possible while living in the Manor.

It was getting late, and Professor Kirke bid everyone good night. Elizabeth and her younger siblings wished Professor Kirke a good night's rest.

" Alright, everyone. Go to your room. I'll be there shortly to wish you all good night," Elizabeth smiled.

" Yay!" Lucy cheered.

She turns and runs down the East Wing to her bedroom.

" Sweet!" Edmund smiled.

He turns and runs down the East Wing to his bedroom.

" I cannot wait to sleep. It's been a long day," Peter yawned and stretched.

" What's our schedule going to be like tomorrow?" Susan asked, looking worried.

" Schedule?" Elizabeth raised an eyebrow.

" Yeah. Mrs. MaCready seemed adamant about us following the rules while living here," Susan looks at her older sister.

" Su. Mrs. MaCready is Professor Kirke's Housekeeper. She's not the owner of this Manor. Professor Kirke is," Elizabeth responded.

" I-I just don't want any of us to get in trouble," Susan looked worried.

" We won't, and if she has a problem with any of you. She has to deal with me," Elizabeth firmly speaks. " Only Professor Kirke, me, and Peter, the second oldest, can discipline you, Lucy, and Edmund. That woman isn't your Guardian," She reminds her.

Susan nodded in response.

" I'll see you both in the morning," She turns and walks towards the East Wing to her bedroom.

Elizabeth and Peter looked at one another.

" Liz. You can always count on me if something bothers you. You are my sister and, well, a surrogate mother to me since you also practically raised me," Peter smiled.

" You mean the world to me, and all I want is for you to be happy and cared for," He looks at his older sister fondly.

Elizabeth's gaze softened.

" Thanks, Peter. I love you," She hugs her younger brother.

" I love you too, Liz," Peter hugs his older sister tightly.

" Let's go with the little ones to wish them good night," Elizabeth lets go of her younger brother.

Peter nodded, letting go of his older sister and escorting her to the East Wing to his bedroom.

Elizabeth watched Peter grab his pajamas and walk toward the bathroom to get dressed. She heard the door close and walked towards Edmund, dressed in his pajamas and lying in bed.

" What would you like me to do? Tell you a story or sing you a song?" She asked while brushing his younger brother's hair lovingly.

" Can you sing me a song?" Edmund asked.

Elizabeth nodded in response.

She looks at her younger brother fondly and begins to sing a song to set the mood for what they have been going through.

Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift (Taylor's Version):

" I remember tears streaming down your face.

When I said, I'd never let you go.

When all those shadows almost killed your light.

I remember you said you don't leave me here alone.

But all that's dead and gone and passed tonight-" Elizabeth's voice sounded soft and loving to Edmund's ears.

" Just close your eyes. The sun is going down.

You'll be alright. No one can hurt you now.

Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound-" Edmund's gaze softened, slowly drifting to slumber.

" Don't you dare look out your window, darling? Everything's on fire.

The war outside our door keeps raging on.

Hold onto this lullaby even when the music's gone-" Elizabeth's voice sounded like echoes similar to raindrops to Edmund as he drifts to sleep.

" Just close your eyes. The sun is going down.

You'll be alright. No one can hurt you now.

Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound," Elizabeth leaned forward and lovingly kissed Edmund's forehead.

Edmund slept, looking peaceful, thanks to Elizabeth's singing.

Elizabeth ensured her younger brother got covered before standing up and turning to see Peter smiling at her.

" Have you ever thought of becoming a Professional singer, Liz?" Peter asked while walking towards his bed and pulling the covers to lie down.

Elizabeth looked at her younger brother thoughtfully.

" I do love to sing. However, I never saw myself singing professionally," She responded.

" You should try singing professionally, like for a musical or something, when you have the time," Peter smiled.

Elizabeth hummed and nodded.

" Good night, Pete. Sweet dreams," She tucked her younger brother and kissed his forehead.

" Night, Liz," Peter yawned, closed his eyes, and fell asleep.

Elizabeth turns and walks out of the boys' bedroom. She closed the door and walked towards the girls' bedroom.

She entered the bedroom and saw that Susan was already asleep. However, Lucy was awake and staring at her excitedly since she had heard her sing earlier.

" You want me to sing?" She stared at her youngest sister amusingly.

Lucy nodded in excitement.

" Alright. Alright," Elizabeth giggled and walked towards Lucy's bed and helped her get comfortable.

You'll Be in My Heart By Phil Collins:

" Come stop your crying.

It will be alright.

Just take my hand.

Hold it tight.

I will protect you.

From all around you,

I will be here.

Don't you cry-" Elizabeth starts to sing, causing Lucy to look at her lovingly.

" For one so small.

You seem so strong.

My arms will hold you.

Keep you safe and warm.

This bond between us.

Can't be broken,

I will be here, don't you cry-" She fondly brushed Lucy's hair.

" 'Cause you'll be in my heart.

Yes, you'll be in my heart.

From this day on,

Now and forever more-" Her voice started to lure Lucy to slumber.

" You'll be in my heart.

No matter what they say.

You'll be here in my heart.

Always," She warmly smiled and lovingly kissed Lucy's forehead.

She tucked her youngest sister to bed, stood, and turned to look at Susan. She walked across the room to the other bed and lovingly kissed her younger sister's forehead.

" Good night," She whispered.

Susan smiled in her sleep.

Elizabeth turns and walks out of the girls' bedroom, closing the door behind her. She walks away from the East Wing to the Foyer and then to the West Wing.

On her way to her bedroom, Elizabeth's eyes blinked, and she felt goosebumps all over her arms when she walked by a closed door. She stopped walking and stared at the door with mixed emotions.

" Eli...za...beth," A voice echoed, causing Elizabeth to stare at the door with a dream-like gaze.

Elizabeth puts her hand on the door handle and opens it. She enters the room and looks at her surroundings, seeing it empty except for a single Wardrobe.

The door closed behind Elizabeth, causing her to return to reality, and she looked back at the door.

" Eli...za...beth," The voice continues to echo, causing Elizabeth to look at the Wardrobe.

She stared at the Wardrobe with mixed emotions, remembering what Professor Kirke told her when they were in his office.

" The tree grew just as tall as its sister tree in Narnia and seemed to have a link to the other tree-it sometimes moved when there was no wind...at least not in London. The tree got blown down, and the Wood got used to becoming a fabulous Wardrobe," Professor Kirke says.

" Narnia?" Elizabeth whispered while walking towards the Wardrobe.

She noticed that the Wardrobe designs were unique and wondered if some is how Narnia looked. She puts her hand on the doorknob, twists it, and opens it.

Inside she saw clothes, but something in Elizabeth's heart told her to enter the Wardrobe and walk past the clothing.

She stepped inside, walked past the clothing, and walked forward, the door slowly closing behind her.
