Ch. 10 Can we play Hide-n-Seek?

It has been a week since Elizabeth recovered from her adrenaline rush during her time at Narnia. After recovering, she decided to check on the rest of her younger siblings. She noticed that Susan would stick close to the Library, Peter and Edmund would spend time in the Game room, and Lucy would always be by her side, having tea time in the Green House and talking about Narnia.

Before Mrs. MaCready planned for Elizabeth to do hard labor, aka chores, all over the Manor. However, Professor Digory Kirke forbids it per Doctor Polly Plummer's request. As the final straw, he fired the older female when he saw how hard she was towards Elizabeth and her younger siblings.

Elizabeth felt horrible that Professor Kirke lost a House-Keeper, but he reassured her that he'd find someone who would love to care for him and his home.

Professor Kirke reminded Elizabeth that he was getting to that age where he couldn't do things as he used to and promised Dr. Plummer that he would take it easy and finally retire.

It was a beautiful morning, and Elizabeth was eating breakfast with Lucy at the Green House since the rest of their siblings wanted to do their own thing.

" Lizzie. I'm bored," Lucy whined.

Elizabeth took a sip of her orange juice and set it down. She looks at her youngest sister worryingly.

" What do you want to do?" She asked.

" Can we play a game?" Lucy asked, looking at her eldest sister with puppy-dog eyes.

Elizbeth hummed, looking at her youngest sister curiously.

" What do you have in mind?" She smiled.

" Can we play hide-n-seek?" Lucy suggested.

Elizabeth's eyes blinked.

" I think we are disadvantaged since it's only you and me," She responded.

" We can have Peter, Susan, and Edmund play with us!" Lucy stands, looking at her eldest sister excitedly.

" Not a horrible idea. Let's get Peter and Edmund first since you know it will take a while to convince Susan to play with us. But I know she'll cave if all of us beg her to play with us," Elizabeth stands, taking the two dirty dishes, and turns to see a slightly older female with dark hair and green eyes approaching her and Lucy.

" I'll take those," The new House Keeper, twenty-five-year-old Gretchen Stanley, smiled.

" Ms. Stanley!" Lucy greeted.

" Hello, Lucy. How was breakfast?" Gretchen asked.

" It was yummy!" Lucy smiled.

" Lizzie and I are going to look for the rest of our siblings because I want us to play hide-n-seek!" She says.

" It is a beautiful day. I saw your brothers playing video games in the Game room. They deserve to have some sunlight in them. And the same with your sister, Susan, who always reads different kinds of books daily," Gretchen looks at the two sisters.

" Yeah. We need to have some family bonding," Elizabeth nodded. " Let's go, Lu," She grabs her youngest sister's hand. " Have a lovely day, Gretchen," She smiled and waved.

" Have a good day, Elizabeth. Lucy," Gretchen waved.

Lucy waved goodbye, leaving the Green House with her eldest sister.

The two sisters enter the Manor and walk towards the Game Room, seeing Peter and Edmund playing a fighting game on TV.

" Peter! Edmund!" Elizabeth shouted, grabbing the two brothers' attention.

Peter paused the game, causing him and Edmund to turn and see their two sisters entering the Game Room.

" Hi! Lizbeth. Lucy," Peter greeted.

" How long have you two been playing this game?" Elizabeth asked, looking at her brother's slightly dark under-eye bags.

" I think they haven't taken a break," Lucy whispered.

" We have taken breaks!" Edmund retorted.

" Peter and I take turns to use the restroom. We have also been eating dinner with everyone," He firmly says.

" No one is accusing you, Edmund," Elizabeth reassured.

" Lucy and I want to play a game with you, Peter, and Susan," She explained.

" Oh! What game do you have in mind?" Peter asked, looking at his sisters fondly.

Elizabeth turns her gaze to her youngest sister.

" I want us to play Hide-n-Seek!" Lucy smiled.

" Hide-n-Seek is a childish game," Edmund complains.

Lucy adorably pouted.

" It's also an active game where we run around and hide," Elizabeth reminded, gently putting her hands on her youngest sister's shoulders.

" You two need sunlight," She intently stared at her brothers' dark, baggy under-eyes.

" And besides, we need to have fun," She smiled.

" Peter and I are having fun here. Right, Peter?" Edmund looks at Peter.

" We need to have fun as a family, Edmund!" Elizabeth reasoned.

Peter sighed, rubbing the back of his neck with his right hand. He knew that his older sister was right about them needing to go out more and be active.

" We are having fun, Ed. But Elizabeth is right. We need to have fun as a family. Mum would have wanted us all to play together," He looks at Edmund.

Edmund pouted, not wanting to play Hide-n-seek. But he knew he couldn't do anything about it because his older siblings would have forced him to play with them.

" Alright. We'll play Hide-n-Seek," He sighed.

" Yay!" Lucy cheered.

" Let's go to the Library," Elizabeth looks at her siblings.

" Why?" Edmund asked.

" Because that's where Susan is," Peter answered.

" That's right," Elizabeth nodded.

" Let's go! Let's go!" Lucy grabs her eldest sister's hand and exits the Game Room.

" Come on, Ed. Let's go," Peter walks out of the Game Room with his younger brother.

At the Library in the Manor, Susan is reading a book called The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that hasn't come out to the Public. Due to Professor Kirke being friends with Antoine, the Author gifted the Professor early access to his new book that he has been writing.

" What do you think of that Book?" Professor Kirke asked as he entered the Library.

Susan's eyebrow rose, and her eyes widened when she saw Professor Kirke. She hadn't seen the older male in the Library for a week, so she didn't expect to see him.

" Even though it's a children's book, it has so many messages or lessons you could say," Susan says.

Professor Kirke puts a book he used for a paper on the bookshelf. He turns to look at Susan.

" And what are those lessons?" He asked.

" From what I read, this book wants readers to listen to their hearts," Susan looks at Professor Kirke.

Professor Kirke nodded.

" There's this quote that says, only with the heart can one see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye." Susan recited.

" The character, The Little Prince, has a pure heart. Neither wealth nor beauty interested him. He knew the biggest treasures are hidden deep in our hearts," Professor Kirke smiled.

" My friend, the one that wrote that book, told me that he wants the world, specifically the children in this generation, to see the beauty within their hearts despite living in difficult times," He explained.

" But, how? Everyone wants us to grow up quickly," Susan looked at Professor Kirke worryingly.

" Look at your sister, Lucy," Professor Kirke stated.

Susan's eyes blinked, looking at Professor Kirke curiously.

" Even though your sister is going through a difficult time, which is the War. It doesn't stop her from wanting to see the world in a positive light. She may be ten, but she is smart in her own way," Professor Kirke explained.

" Each and everyone has an inner child, as they call it. We tend to cast it aside when we get older. Even though society wants us to be grown-ups 24/7, it's okay to let loose and be a child again. That's what your sister, Elizabeth, is doing when she is with Lucy," He hears footsteps running towards the Library.

Susan opens her mouth to say something but stops when she sees her siblings entering the Library.

" Susan!" Lucy shouted but stopped when she saw Professor Kirke.

" Oh! Hello, Professor," She greeted.

" Good morning, Lucy," Professor Kirke smiled.

" Elizabeth. Peter. Edmund," He nodded when he saw the other Pevensie siblings.

" Are we interrupting something?" Elizabeth asked.

" No. We finished talking about this book," Professor Kirke points to the book in Susan's grasp.

" Oh! Susan! Want to play Hide-n-Seek with us?" Lucy smiled.

Susan remembered her conversation with Professor Kirke and nodded.

" Yeah. I don't mind," She hands the book to Professor Kirke and walks out of the Library with Lucy, Peter, and Edmund.

Elizabeth and Professor Kirke looked at one another.

" I don't know what you said to Susan, but thank you," Elizabeth smiled.

" All your sister needed is some guidance," Professor Kirke reassured and waved as he watched Elizabeth leave the Library to play Hide-n-Seek with her siblings.
