The First
Oceana sat staring at the clock on the wall, only a few minutes before school is over. Soon, she'd be able to get out and start walking home, and finally, relax. She would be able to have a good summer, where she doesn't move.
She sat there, looking at their teacher, Mr. Neil, her favourite teacher. He taught Language Arts, Gym, and History. Oceana would often please Mr. Neil, he would always tease her, even though she was the quietest girl in class.
Often he would ask her to do him favors, and she knew why, he wanted to give her a break. Oceana would work herself to death, and Mr. Neil saw that, but it would always be worth it, her work was one of the greatest in her whole Junior High. Most people would read her stories and be amazed, they would always ask her how she did it, and she would shyly respond.
Others would awe at her art work, her voice, and her kindness. Oceana only had a few friends, a small group of 7; 4 girls and 3 boys. Her friends were in different classes, but all of them got to be together when they had Math class. People always suspected that she was the shy girl, the quiet one, but with her friends, that was completely off.
Ring! Ring! The school bell went, Oceana saw everyone standing, including Mr. Neil, he was getting up and getting ready to say good bye. She stood up, taking all her books and putting them into her bag. Mr. Neil came by her desk and smiled at her he set his hand on the corner of her desk.
"Have a lovely summer Ms. Troy." He said as he watched her put her water bottle into her bag.
"Thank you, Mr. Neil." She smiled and used her right hand to tuck her hair behind her ear.
"You've been a favourite student of mine." He said as she looked up to him.
Oceana's eyes sparkled, happy that she was a good student. "Why, how about everyone else?" She asked in a joking voice.
"Well, they aren't at all like you!" He lifted her hand and took Oceana outside of the room.
Oceana stepped outside, into the buzzing hallways. She looked up to her beloved teacher, he stared at her. Then in front of them, her friends were at their lockers getting their backpacks, she on the other hand, already had hers. Lauren looked at her and stared, she knew that Oceana loved Mr. Neil, he was her favourite. She smiled and turned back to her locker, getting her satchel out.
"How could I be your favourite?" Oceana wondered aloud.
"Because you are the kindest, sweetest, and smartest girl I know." Mr. Neil replied.
He let go of her shoulder, she stepped back and looked at him. He smiled at her and she smiled back, she would never forget the moment. She walked away, turning one last time to see Mr. Neil staring and smiling at her. She waved a hand and he waved back and watched as she turned around to go down the hall and disappear around the corner.
Oceana walked down the hall and saw her friends, she smiled and looked at all six of them. Paris, Nelson, Lauren, Wendall, Natalie, and Nathan. They said their good byes and looked at each other smiling. Finally, they all parted, left the school.
Oceana walked past crowds of friends saying their good byes, the popular girls, the jock boys. Everyone. She walked down the sidewalk, outside of the school grounds and down the street. She took out her phone and looked down, 4:00, it said. She hadn't realized that she had spent 40 minutes inside the school with her friends and Mr. Neil.
Oceana saw a reflection on the screen of her phone, it was Nick. He was smiling and walking faster, catching up to Oceana.
"Hey." He smiled as he said hello. "How are you doing?"
"I'm great, you?" She said as she sucked a breath in.
"Good." He turned to her and watched as she fumbled with her hands.
Nick looked into Oceana's dark brown eyes, full of kindness and concern. He had seen her many times before. The first time was at a play they had both gotten into, she had been with one of her castmates, Wendy and Willda. They had been talking to him and his friend, Eric. She joined in and together they talked.
After their first encounter, they didn't do much, but every so often, Nick would see her and talk with her, sometimes he would see her hanging around the basket ball court in the shade, where Nick always played. Oceana and her friends would always be there together and they'd play, it seemed like they were just there for the shade, but really they weren't. At least she wasn't.
"Can I see your phone?" He asked her as they walked across the street.
"Sure?" Oceana handed him her phone.
He looked at it, he put in his phone number into her contacts, she hadn't known. He felt strange doing so, he'd never done such a thing, but now was his chance. In a matter of minutes, he handed the phone back to her. He smiled and turned a left.
"Good bye Oceana, see you later." He turned around and walked down the side walk.
"Bye Nick." She said quietly as she stared at her phone, she hadn't known what he had done, but whatever it was, it couldn't have been good.

She walked into her house and sat on her hammock. She had just changed into her summer dress, floral as usual. She lay down and looked up at her phone, nothing. She lay there bored, the worse part of summer was the boredom. She set her phone down on the night stand beside the hammock.
She wondered what Nick had done, and what he will do, she knew that he wasn't gonna be in Junior High anymore, so that last moment was all she got, and she was happy with it. She looked up at the ceiling, her eyes slowly closing.
>*<
Oceana slowly woke up, she looked outside, it was evening already. She got off the hammock and took her phone, she checked to see if anything important things were happening. In her notifications, she saw the words: Nick White. Her eyes widened and she tapped on the notification, it took her to her messages.
Hey Oceana, it's me, Nick.
I was wondering, do you wanna come with me to the beach on Friday? I'd love to have you over.
She stared at the phone, eyes wide with wonder. So that's what he did. She thought as she responded. Her fingers tapped on four letters: S-U-R-E. She pressed send and a response came quickly.
Nick: Alright, meet me at the beach, at 6?
Oceana: Of course, see you then.
Nick: Alright, have a good evening
Oceana smiled as she put her phone down to change into her pajamas. Soon she was in her hammock sleeping again.
>*<
Nick tapped his foot as he waited. He had waited a whole week for Friday, he couldn't wait to see Oceana. It was 5: 55, five minutes until 6:00. He sat down in the sand and watched as the sun lowered.
He felt a tap on his shoulder, turning around he saw Oceana in a beautiful summer dress, it was a mid-thigh dress. In many wonderful colours. Pinks, blues, and purples all around. The short sleeves went off her shoulders, they weren't tight and seemed to fit her nicely. She wore dark indigo sneakers with white laces.
She gave him a half smile and tucked a hair behind her ear, one of the strands that hadn't stayed with her messy bun. Nick smiled as he stared at Oceana, more beautiful than ever.
He looked down at his own clothes, jeans, a white shirt and a simple, blue varsity jacket. He stood up and smiled at Oceana, dusting the sand off his jeans. They strolled down the beach and talked for what seemed like hours.
Nick's hand brushed against Oceana's, they stopped in their tracks and looked at each other. He smiled and took her hand, continuing to walk down the beach. He stopped in front of a big rock, he got her on it, she sat and stared at the beautiful summer sun setting.
Nick sat beside her and put his arm around her, he felt her head on his shoulder, he smiled and looked down slightly, to see her shivering in the cool breeze. He took his varsity jacket off and wrapped it around her. She smiled and pulled it tighter around herself.
"Who was your first kiss?" Oceana asked out of the blue.
"You mean on the lips or on the cheek?" Nick questioned.
Oceana thought. "Cheek."
"You." He replied as he smiled.
"Wha-?" She was cut short as she felt Nick's lips on her cheek.
She smiled, speechless at what just happened. Her eyes met his, and he smiled his eyes steady. He looked at the sunset and watched as the sun hid behind the clouds.
"Who was your first kiss, on the cheek?" He asked.
"You just did, that was my first," Oceana said as she watched the sun.
He got off the rock and helped Oceana off. They started walking down the beach, hand in hand. Nick let go of Oceana and stepped behind her, using his hands to blindfold her, he led her down the beach.
Finally, they stopped and Oceana put her soft hands on Nick's.
"We're here, are you ready?" Nick asked her.
"Yes, what is it?" Oceana wanted badly to know.
Nick released her and she stared at the beautiful palomino horse in front of her. She looked back at Nick and then to the horse. Nick bent down and set his hands near Oceana so that she could have a step up.
Instead of using Nick, she put one foot in the stirrup and used her other leg to swing over. smiling at the sand that she had kicked up and left on Nick's clothes. She looked down at the varsity jacket, one of her favorite colours, the colour of the ocean.
Nick smiled, he got up and brushed the sand off, he walked towards his chestnut horse, he got on it and started riding, Oceana following behind him. She flicked the reins and came up beside him, smiling as she ran her hands through the horse's mane.

Nick smiled as he plopped down on his bed, he was happy that he had gotten together with Oceana. He had started talking with her just recently and was happy to get to know her. Nick looked into his closet, one hanger was empty, the one he used to put his varsity jacket on.
He stood and went outside for a walk. As he circled the block, he saw sprinklers on with children running through them. He smiled as he walked past, and so did the children. He turned his head to face ahead of him. He walked away from the children and entered a park, the one he would always pass on his way to school, a lot of people would be there, walking dogs, playing games, and other things.
It had been awhile since he had walked into the park, he usually just passed it, but this time, he was going to walk in. He glanced around, he didn't really know anyone there, but that was okay. He thought about talking with Oceana again, it had been two weeks since they last saw each other.
Nick stopped at a lemonade stand, he saw a young girl there selling lemonade. He got out a dollar and handed it to the girl, who handed him a styrofoam cup with fresh lemonade inside.
"Thanks." He said as he walked away.
He sipped the cold drink, it cooled him down, just what he needed during the summer. He finished and as he threw the cup into the garbage, he saw a girl sitting on a bench, she seemed lonely and he wanted to sit with her.
He walked towards her and sat beside her, she looked up at him and smiled. "Hey, Nick."
"What are you doing out here?" He asked as he looked at the familiar face. "I thought you had gone off with mom or something."
"Well, I have, you know, I just needed to get away from her." She said as she closed the book she was reading.
"Well, Queenie," he said as he stared into her eyes. "I hope you are enjoying your summer."
"I am, how are you and dad?" She asked as she shifted to face him.
"Great, how about Eden?" Nick asked.
Queenie looked at Nick and pointed behind him. He turned around to see the girl at the lemonade stand.
"Who did you think that was?" She asked.
"Well I knew, but how is she?" He questioned as he scratched his arm.
"She's perfectly fine, what do you expect?" She said as she uncapped a bottle and put it up to her lips, taking a sip.
"Well, that's pretty good lemonade." He said as he turned back to Queenie.
"Meet anyone new?" She asked as she looked at her brother.
Nick didn't want to tell Queenie about Oceana, but he couldn't lie to his sister. Yet, he didn't want to get in trouble, no one really knew about him and Oceana after all, but if he had to start telling someone, he might as well talk with Queenie.
"Yeah, I met a girl, her name is Oceana." Nick finally confessed.
"You mean the girl you always talk about?" Queenie asked as a smile crept on her face.
"Yeah, the girl I al-" Nick stopped mid sentence and looked at his sister. "I never talk about her."
"Ha, sure." Queenie laughed as she fingered her bracelet. "You talk when you sleep."
"But-" He was cut off.
"I remember you talking about him before well you know." She said as she sighed. "I and Eden gotta go, you wanna meet soon?"
"Sure," he checked his phone, it was already noon. "When?"
"How's this weekend, and bring Oceana," Queenie said as she stood and left.
"Alright," Nick said as he turned around to walk away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Hi Queenie," Oceana said as she shook Queenie's soft hands.
Queenie smiled and introduced Oceana to her sister and they shook hands too. She led Oceana to the back, where Nick was setting up the table.
"So what are we gonna do? Nick wouldn't tell me a thing." Oceana said as she entered the backyard.
"Movie, then we're going out," Queenie said as she wiped her hair away from her face.
Eden followed them and sat in the grass, it was evening, 8 pm to be exact. They all had their dinners before, and now they would be sitting in front of a sheet to watch a movie.
Oceana looked at a white sheet in front of her, and a projector near by, she smiled as she saw the DVD. She looked at the table, the refreshments, iced tea and lemonade, popcorn and little snacks. They all settled in and sat down, feeling the warm night breeze of a July night.
"Have you watched White Frog before?" Queenie asked.
"Yes I have, but I've watched it twice, and I'd like to watch a third time." She smiled as she took a sip of iced tea.
"Well, in that case, let's watch," Nick said as he turned the projector on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They smiled and laughed as they walked across a bridge. Oceana walked by Queenie, now a good friend of hers. They chatted, Nick and Eden talking behind them, trailing behind the two.
Oceana checked her phone. "Well, now, it's ten!" she exclaimed as she put away her phone.
"We should get going," Nick said as he pulled out his phone to check.
"It was lovely meeting you," Queenie said as she took her phone out. "Before we go, let's take a selfie."
They gathered together and smiled as the phone took a picture. They all separated their own ways, saying their good byes.
As Oceana got ready for bed, she got a notification, Queenie had just sent her the selfie, a lovely picture of her, Nick, Queenie, and Eden.
A perfect summer. She thought as she slowly fell asleep.
