Chapter 27: Katniss

Green.

It had stayed the same since they day he painted it.

Year after year, she grew. So did we, however it seemed to be more so her.

Then it comes to this day, when it pains both of us. Peeta more than I from what I see before me.

His beloved daughter, Leigh, in his arms. Taking in all of her nineteen year old being, as she steps further into the world beyond the safe-haven called home. It is very rare that I ever see Peeta cry, of this sort. It hurts to have to give his youngest up. But not completely. Leigh, drying up her father's tears, as her own fall.

Our strong and independent young woman, just like her sister Dwyn. Who left the nest five years ago, to pursue her dream of marriage and motherhood with her three boys. Leigh, much unlike her sister, is set to travel and let wherever and whatever she is admired by, control how her future begins. She loves her nephews, but is desired to let time tell with marriage or kids. Not as persistent as her sister is.

Dwyn needed to be here for her family, who drove six hours while expecting her next child, to be here. As my tears fall, I turn to my eldest beside me and give her belly a rub with a smile. Both of us hope that she finally has a little girl on the way.

As Leigh and Peeta separate, my daughter rushes towards me. I wrap her in my arms instantly, dreading the moment when I'll finally have to let go. I peck her head with kisses and rock us, just as I did to calm her as a child.

She gave Dwyn a hug before joining me again with the last of her things. She sighed, looking back at the room as we depart.

At the door, Dwyn holds her father's arm which cradles her belly. I know Peeta holds inner delight as he does hold her daughter. I give Leigh a departing kiss before our arms unlink and she slowly walks down to the start of the driveway, to where a taxi awaits for her.  The three of us wave as she leaves and Peeta's hand is quick to grasp mine soon after.

We stay put as we watch her dissapear in the distance of the trees. Peeta sniffing and slowly calming, my poor husband still red in the face.

I chuckle then gasp. "Oh Dwyn, sweetheart, we have to get you out of this chill, before the baby gets cold." I exclaim, helping my daughter back inside. She giggles at my remark, saying "Mama" in a playful whine. Taking my hand in her own.

In moments like these, I remember how I never thought I'd be here. With Peeta as my husband with two beautiful daughters.

How the two of us created another generation of Mellark daughters, which has been rare in Peeta's family. Additions to the new generation that many people wouldn't have expected twenty six years ago.

But in this time I have learnt.... there would always be fires that burn. But for us, the hottest and most dangerous ones no longer burn.

The End.
