Chapter 14: Peeta
The shakiness in my breath is noticeable. The uncomfortable feeling is visible. Those tears I've shed are visible. My clenching hands bobbing on my knees is also visible.
Katniss. Katniss. Katniss.
The hospital hallway is cold, probably like Katniss' unconscious body.
I can't let them see her. I can't let my daughters be more scared then they already are.
The nervous habit of mine breaks loose. My knuckles go in between my teeth. I begin to choke on my sobs. I bury my head on my knees, trying to hide how upset I am from everyone. From this place.
The door besides me makes squeaks as it is used, footsteps echoing beside me.
"Sir." A woman starts and places a hand on my back. She must notice my sobs, it's obvious I'm in pain. That I'm afraid.
"Sir, it's okay. We haven't found any major injuries." She continues, I know she hasn't finished.
"Thank goodness." I breathe in between sobs.
"But, we have noticed something." I prepare to cry again, I know it's not going to be what I can bear.
"We don't know the duration of it and the severity but she has some temporary memory loss." I get up from my seat and kick a chair in anger. I'm overcome with the sobs again and sink to the floor, in tears.
"I know it's hard. However we can't tell until you're in there." My fingers pull at my hair, I definitely can't let my children come. Katniss might not remember them.
"I - I think I can go in, in a minute." I stutter to the nurse.
"She's going to wake up shortly. We need you to be there when she wakes up." I swallow hard and stop crying quickly, it is a hard task.
I wipe my eyes, taking in a large breath. "Okay." I sigh and approach the door to Katniss' room.
My fingers lock around to door knob. I sniff before twisting it open and entering through it.
My mouth drops when I see my beautiful wife. Oxygen mask plastered over her face, her heartbeat steady as the monitor shows. Her head wrapped in a thin layer of bandages.
I can't believe I wasn't there to save her. But Dwyn was, she called an ambulance. Then she called me and my children are probably hugging her parents right now, in fear that something has gone wrong.
I approach her and I press a kiss to her forehead, resting my hand on her belly. I hear her stir and prepare for anything. Her eyes flutter open and tilt towards me. She focuses on me for a few seconds and I hope she still remembers me.
"Peeta?" She gasps and sits up immediately. She starts shrieking at the sight of me and I try to calm her.
"Shh. Katniss, shh, it's okay." I reassure.
"Peeta, why are you here!? Our parents will find out. We're still rivals."
My mouth drops wider.
"You've forgotten."
