He sat at the computer typing away as usual. He never checked the time because it got to the point where it was depressing. Two AM was the usual cut off for when he would put the clock away.
His boss pushed off another project on his at the last minute which he had to present in the morning. Unless someone stole the presentation from him which he'd gladly give up. He found his fingers lingering over they keyboard as he though about something else.
His son's T ball game was this upcoming weekend and his sixth birthday was coming up soon and he needed to do something special. His son had started asking questions about his mom. He had started noticing that other kids had two parents coming to their school shows and presentations. He had started to feel left out from the rest of the kids. he was only six, he needed a mother.
His hand shook slightly as he thought about his son's mom. He still couldn't wrap his head around it all these years later. How do you ask someone to take care of your kid for two days and just never come back. He hadn't seen her in almost six years and he didn't think he'd ever want to see her again. It was just him and his son.
The door cracked open and he ran in. "Hey you. What are you still doing up?" He stood in the door way. "Can I come in?"
"Of course! You're always welcome everywhere in this house." A smile spread across his face as he ran up to his father and jumped in his lap. He wrapped his arms around his father and gave him as tight of a hug as he could manage.
"What are you still doing up, daddy?"
"I'm working as always, but I'll be going to bed soon. You should be in bed now however." He scooped up his son, holding him nearly upside down and listened to the heavy laughter that emerged from his boy. He chuckled as well as he lowered him to the ground. "What do I have to bribe you with to go to sleep?"
"Twenty dollars." he said with his hand outstretched.
He laughed a deep belly laugh. "You're getting good at that, but no. How about you go to bed now and I make sure to make you the best birthday party ever this weekend?"
He smiled "Okay!" And he ran out of the room, leaving the door open.
The man let out a soft laugh, thinking about what he was going to do with his boy, not knowing how to make his little heart happy. He didn't know how to handle all of the birthday stuff. He really wished he had some help with this kind of thing.
"Dad?" He was back, standing in the doorway, feet visibly antsy.
"Yes?"
"I know I don't have a mom like all of the other kids, but I want you to know that I don't need one. I've been happy with you. You're fun and sometimes you let me eat ice cream for breakfast if we're late for things." He smiles up at his dad, "I love you Dad, good night."
"Good night, Tyler. Get some rest and I'll see you in the morning."
"I always do." He said with a smile as he practically skipped back to his own room.
He sat there at his desk, nearly in shock. Then, he laughed. He knew he had done something right with his son, and that they would be okay. He loved him and he was loved back. He knew they were good. He smiled and went back to working on his presentation.
