Chapter 4: The Fire
After all the tourists left, there was an eerie silence. This was when the nerves began to set in for all of us. Up until now, I don't think we had truly realized what we were doing.
"So," Jane said shakily, pulling out a Mad Libs pad and a pen from her backpack, "who wants to play a round?"
Violetta, Davy, and I nodded, and the four of us began to play.
It was going splendidly, and soon, most of us had forgotten our fears and nervousness.
After about an hour of Mad Libs and talking, I began to smell something. Cautiously, I departed from our group and went down the staircase.
The first thing that hit me was the smoke. It was black and thick and dark. Next thing I knew, I was feeling a blast of heat. It was getting harder and harder to breathe as my body temperature quickly rose. "Fire," I coughed, dropping to my knees in an attempt to get below the smoke. I soon found that it didn't work, so I stood up shakily and ran up the stairs. "We need to get out of here," I said hurriedly.
"Relax," Violetta sighed. "Gigi, we've been through-"
"Guys, the building is on fire! Move!" I exclaimed, but it was too late.
The fire had already began to burn the floor beneath our feet. I don't know how we didn't hear it before.
"Run!" I cried. "Hurry!"
I tried making my way to the staircase, but it was already engulfed in flames.
"What do we do?" Jane exclaimed.
"We're going to die!" Davy moaned.
"No," I said, giving a small shake of my head. "No, we can't. We won't. We just- we need to find another way down."
We all ran down the hallway, feeling as though the floor beneath our feet could crumble away at any moment.
Suddenly, there was a loud creak and a scream.
I turned just in time to see my sister fall through the burning floorboards. "No!" I screamed, attempting to catch her.
Davy grabbed ahold of me before I, too, fell down into the fire below.
Shocked and scared out of our minds, Davy, Jane, and I quickly found another way down and searched frantically for Violetta as flames licked the walls, floor, and ceilings.
"Over here!" Davy exclaimed, lifting the unconscious form of my sister into his arms.
She had been badly burned and looked as if she had possibly broken a bone or two.
Tears ran down my cheeks as we fought to make our way out of the burning cathedral. Soon, we found a broken window in the back and climbed through.
Coughing violently and shuddering from the sudden change in temperature, we made our way to the front of the building, where thousands and thousands of people were gathered.
Firemen and police rushed over to us in attempt to ascertain the situation.
"My sister!" I sobbed. "She's hurt! Someone, call an ambulance!"
Soon, the paramedics arrived and we were all brought to the hospital. The entire time I was being examined, my thoughts rested on my sister.
After, I was asked to call my parents, so I did.
"Maman, Papa, I...I have to tell you something," I said shakily.
"What is it, Daring?" Maman asked worriedly.
"I'm in the hospital. Davy, Jane, Violetta, and I, we-"
"The hospital?!" Papa interjected. "We're on our way."
I sat in exasperation as my parents hung up the call. "Why did this have to happen to us?" I moaned.
