Cacophony
WELCOME TO CULTURAL WEEK!!!
Screamed the white banner which was hanged at the very entrance of the senior building. The much talked about cultural week was finally here and it got the school buzzing with activities.
I was equally looking forward to it because i had something to wear on the final day whereby we will all be in our individual native and cultural outfit.
Thanks to Fancy Falilat, one of bro Martins flings who i am starting to really like due to the amazing outfits she made for me. She is really good at her job.
"What do you think of it?" Theresa asked beside me, the cool morning breeze blew slightly, kissing the surface of my cheeks in a gentle manner.
"It is okay... " she gave me a look "I'm serious. You guys are doing a good job" i praised.
"It's not me. You should give kudos to the social planning committee. I only gave the blueprint" she explained as we both entered the block.
Students going up and down, excitement in the air knowing today was a half day for learning. The remaining hours which is from twelve noon to three pm will be spent in the school hall for the cultural event.
This will run from today which is Monday till Friday. Saturday will be the big day in which the programme will hold from morning till the evening time.
Today will be like an introduction whereby there will be introduction to diverse cultures and talks and lectures on the different cultures we have in Nigeria.
The students are probably excited that they would not spend a full day in class.
"So we will see by twelve?" i asked as we stopped at the entrance of my classroom. It has turned to our traditional whereby we will walk each other to class.
"Of course. I will save you a seat. Right now, i have to deal with some uncultured swine who think they are better than everyone else" she said letting out an exasperated sigh.
And by uncultured swine, she meant her classmates. I shook my head while smiling, watching her walk away, heading to her class. I readjusted the strap of my backpack before going into mine.
The first class which was geography went by in a breeze, then we had further maths, double period. It was a funny thing watching fellow students doze off at the sound of the voice of the further maths teacher.
The teacher either seems not to care or he was so engrossed with his teaching that he did not call the sleeping students out.
I met with the gang during break time, sitting beside my boyfriend as i enjoy a plate of beans and a bowl of oatmeal. It was a very delicious and nutritious combination.
"So you are telling me we are going to be in the hall for three hours?" Bankole wailed as Evans rolled his eyes.
"Yes" he answered, not sugarcoating his words.
"Shey dem go sha on the Wi-Fi?, make i smuggle my phone in" he asked referring to his contraband phone which i still don't understand how he was able to hide it from the school authorities till now.
What are you saying? He is an elite... He has immunity of some sorts.
My subconscious pointed out for me.
"What do you want to use the school Wi-Fi for?" I asked curiously knowing he had more than enough bandwidth on his phone. A smirk appeared on his face at my question.
"I want to watch porn" he deadpanned and i practically choked on my beans.
"Dude!" Akorede chided him as i wheeze, he rubs my back and i am sure he was glaring at his friend by now.
Did he?- This boy will not kill me.
"What? It is the truth" he defended himself while i watch him through narrowed teary eyes. I was eating beans that has pepper for goodness sake! He just dropped it on me like that.
"The one you dey perform every night no tire you... You still dey watch rubbish" Faramade said while shaking his head.
"Every night? No be every night o. Don't ruin my image in front of Omotolani, please... " he defended himself. I shook my head, taking a sip from my bottle of water.
"Which image are you talking about? Everyone knows what you are capable of in this school" Theresa finished him off as we all chuckled making Bankole pout.
"Ehn... What is your business sef? I sha sabi knack" this time the water i was drinking literally passed through my nose as it went the wrong way, i began to cough hysterically.
"Bankole now... " Akorede basically whined this time around.
"Sorry love. I'm gonna shut up this time" i hear him say but my mind was far too gone to listen to what he was saying.
Bankole is a clown.
What the hell is wrong with this boy?!
"Enough of unnecessary talks. We will be going to the school hall in about an hour or two, i think we should save our energy for the long lectures." Evans, the ever meticulous one advised like always.

Tii wa laa sa

Tii wa laa sa
Asa tii wa
E maa je ko baje o
Tii wa laa sa
Asa tii wa
That was the song some JSS one students used in welcoming the Yoruba teacher onto the stage. The Yoruba teacher also in his complete native wear, consisting of a big agbada, sokoto and fila abeti aja. He completed the outfit with iyun, horse tail popularly called irukere.
"What are they singing about?" Ejiro whispered his question into my ear as the song died out on the lips of the students when he took the mic.
"They are singing about our culture, how it is ours and how we shouldn't let it die" i explained making him nod his head in understanding.
"E kaaro gbo gbo eyan, e sii kaaro eyin omo kaaro ojiire "
"E kaaro Oluko Agba!" the junior students greeted him in equal excitement.
The aged man smiled due to the reaction he got from the students. We have two Yoruba teachers in the school and they are popularly known as Oluko Agba and Oluko Kekeree. They are very vast in the knowledge and culture of the Yoruba language.
The next forty five minutes, he took his time explaining and emphasizing more on the Yoruba language, culture and traditions. The dressing of both gender, the food, greeting, occupation, mode of communication and all sort.
"So i must not look an elder in the eye while talking to him?" Ejiro questioned his voice coated with amazement.
"Yes. If you do, it is a sign of disrespect and lack of home training" he snorts.
"Wahala... " I hit him playfully by the arm. "Yes now. Just because i want to speak to my dad now i must not look him in the eye?"
I shrugged. To be honest, who do that again by the way? We children of nowadays will look you eye ball to eye ball.
I suddenly felt someone presence beside me, looking up. Akorede gestured for me to shift. Ejiro and i did that as he sat with him, i was on the edge so it was much easier.
"You are not doing your duty again?"
"Duty kill dem deir... " he muttered rubbing his eyes in what i guess was tiredness. "if they make noise, they know i will deal with them"
He was referring to the Ss2 boys he was always assigned to make sure they are of good behavior. They are totally frightened by his mere shadow.
"Of course you will... That's why they cower at your presence. Why do i have a feeling that your presence is a threat and some form of torture to them?"
"I won't call it torture. You make me look evil with those words"
"Because you are" I teased. He only chuckled before wrapping his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer to him, he placed a quick kiss on my forehead, I squirmed at the attention we got from everyone, both teachers and students.
They were basically glaring down at my frame just because of the attention and affection he showered on me in the public.
This boy no dey fear at all.
"Why are you sitting so rigid?"
"I am not rigid" he gave me a look "what now?"
"Free body jor... " he said pulling me closer but i pushed him back a little.
"People dey look" i complained as our CRE teacher gave us a nasty and disgusting look from afar.
"Let dem look. I send deir papa?" i hear Ejiro snicker from beside me but i paid him no heed.
For a guy, Akorede can be really touchy. Not that his touch is a harassing one but he just loves holding me, soft caressing...
Physical contacts...
"Is it when we are called out for PDA that you will stop acting this way?"
"We are not kissing or making out. I just love holding unto what is mine" i shook my head. Resting his chin on my head, we were practically snuggling.
Someone cleared his throat and we look up to see Miss Radeke staring down at us with an annoyed expression.
"Wellington, this is a learning environment. I will appreciate it if you can stop your silliness with your.. " she said staring down at me like i am a scum.
I quickly pull away from him but he moved closer. Since the pills incident, i have avoided that woman, i know she doesn't like me and i am not going to give her a reason to make her hate me further.
"We were not doing anything bad, you are just involving yourself in what has got nothing to do with you" he stated defiantly.
"You and your whatever should stop the nonsense you are-"
"Why are you so pained about this? Your colleagues had no issue with this or you want to be in her shoes?" it was not what he said or the tone of his voice while talking to her that got me surprised, it was her reaction.
She was blushing!!
She was freaking blushing!
Clearing her throat in an uneasy manner as many eyes were now on us and i could hear students giggling and snickering, paying less attention to the speaker on stage.
"Akorede, what sort-"
"And she is not whatever... She has a name and it is Omotolani Peters and she is my girlfriend. Got any problem with that?"
I practically melted at his declaration, fighting really hard to contain the blush growing on my cheeks.
Miss Radeke muttered a few words but i was so lost in awe of the boy beside me to hear what she was saying. He turned to me as soon as she left.
A big breathtaking smile appeared on his face when he noticed i was staring at him.
"That was so cool...." Ejiro said but i have another adjective to qualify what just happened.
That was so sweet and romantic...

Glancing through my note over and over again to be sure of what i had written down, i took sure but hasty steps towards the staff block where i was to submit the assignment.
The biology teacher instructed that the assignment must be done in our note so as to check if students were really writing their notes.
And we all know how students can be with biology notes.
I gasped as i slammed into a hard surface, scowling with my eyes close as i rub my forehead knowing that nothing was there initially so i don't know how that place grew a wall all of a sudden.
I stood frozen when i saw the face of the person i ran into. He stared down at me blankly why i felt my heart pound in a painstakingly fast manner in my chest.
It has been a while i had a run in with Akeju because for the past weeks he and his cronies had stayed away from me. I caught him giving me blank stares and occasional glances but he had stayed out of my way.
Running into him was the last thing on my mind but here we are...
I stepped back a little while staring at his brooding face.
"Hello?" i squeaked out in greeting.
*Silence*....
Okay... That's a good sign. I will just walk around him and be on my way. I took a sharp right turn around his standing figure, about to walk away only to be stopped by the hard grip on my wrist.
I said it!
I tried pulling away only for the hold to be tightened. It is a stupid thing to say about my mate but i am scared- scratch that, i am terrified of Akeju.
Which is an embarrassing yet pitiful thing to say.
"What did he promise you?" he asked out of the blue.
"Excuse me?" utterly confused on his question.
"You know he his just going to sleep with you and leave you right?" i frowned realizing what he was insinuating.
"You are no judge of my relationship with Akorede and whatever we do with our lives is none of your business" i snapped out at him in anger.
I don't know where the boldness came from, i guess i had enough of his bull crap. He must have also realized this as his jaw dropped, literally touching the floor.
He came out of his dazed expression with a hard look on his face. I saw the ticking at his jaw and i know he was trying really hard not to explode.
"Because you don dey knack, you no get small respect again. The power of gbola" he laughed in an annoying manner.
"I don't care what you think. I am going to say it again... What Akorede and I share is something special and it is ours, i don't care what your cronies and other people think! Just leave us alone and mind your God damn business!" i snapped at his perplexed face.
Happy with the result, i walk away from him slamming my shoulder against his arm because of how tall he was. I walked away with a contented smile spreading on my face.
I just talk back at Akeju Balogun...
Oh my God!!!!
