Chapter 5: First Test, Shoot The Governor
You felt something on your cheek as you start to come to and open your eyes. "(Y/N), can you hear me?" You heard a voice say but they sounded to far for you to know who it was. You groan as your vision finally comes back into focus and you realize you are on a bed.
The first person you saw was Sherlock, who had his hand caressing your cheek, and then you see John looking over at you. "(Y/N), you okay? Can you hear me?" John asked as he looks you over. "Ugh.....Sherlock? John?" You grumbled as you lift your head up and you feel John's hand go behind your head and touched a lump on the back of your head. You grimaced as Sherlock asked. "Is she okay?"
"She's got a bit of a lump but she should be OK. (Y/N), are you feeling any other pain besides the lump on your head?" John asked you. You smile and said. "No, Doctor Watson. I'm fine." You said and you look over at Sherlock.
"Did you see your sister?" You asked him.
"Yes." He replied.
"How was that?" You asked as you straighten up and he removes his hand away from your face.
You look around and see Mycroft leaning back against a grey panelled wall of what looks like a cell with a glass wall in the front. "Family's always difficult." Sherlock responded after pulling in a deep breath. "Is this an occasion for banter?" Mycroft asked, exasperated. "Mm, case in point." Sherlock said, gesturing towards his brother. You and John chuckle when you hear a phone ringing.
"Are we phoning someone?" John asked.
"Apparently." said Sherlock as you look across the room and see the governor sitting on the floor with his back against the wall on the opposite side of the room from Mycroft.
"What's he doing here?" You asked, nodding towards him.
"As he is told. Eurus is in control." Sherlock replied.
The phone connects and a young girl's distressed voice speaks out over the speakers. "Help me. Please, I'm on a plane and everyone's asleep. Help me!" She said, tearfully. Then the lights in the cell go red and Moriarty's voice speaks out. "Hello. My name's Jim Moriarty. Welcome... to the final problem." Then the lights turn white again and you look around at your boys, anxiously.
"It's okay. He's dead." Sherlock said as he takes your hand in his and helps you up to your feet. The lights turn red again and Moriarty's voice speaks out again.
"This is a recorded announcement. Please say hello to some very old friends of mine." He said then the lights go white again as the little girl speaks.
"Hello? I can hear you talking. Please help me! I'm on a plane and it's going to crash!" She exclaims.
"What is this? We can't do this?" Mycroft asked, irritatedly.
"Do shut up." Sherlock said to him as the girl asks. "Is someone there?"
"Is this supposed to be a game?" Mycroft asked Sherlock.
"Be quiet!" You told him.
"Please help me!" The girl begs and Sherlock lifts his head and said. "Oh, hello. Um, try-try to stay calm. Just ten tell me what your name is."
"I'm not supposed to tell my name to strangers." The girl said.
"Of course not. Very good. But, um, I'll tell you mine. My name is...." He started to say but there's a click and then static from the speakers. "Hello?" Sherlock asked when on the large TV screen, Eurus appears, swing into the camera.
"Oh dear. We seem to have lost the connection." She said as you and the boys turn to face the screen which was suspended from the ceiling.
"How have you been doing this? How is any of this possible?" Mycroft asked her as he walks towards the glass. Eurus drops her smile before responding.
"You put me in here, Mycroft. You brought me my treats." She said.
"What treats?" John asked.
Mycroft turns his head towards him and presses his lips together a little as you and Sherlock frowns and look over at him, who returns your gaze.
Sitting in the chair behind the desk in the governor's office, Eurus raises a remote control and aims it towards the screens at the side of the room. She clicks a button and the lights in the cell turn red.
A close up of Moriarty's face appears on the screen. "Clever Eurus! You go, girl!" He said in a phony American accent and the lights turn white once again.
"How can that be Moriarty?" You asked turning to Sherlock.
Before he could respond, Eurus appears on the screen against and said. "Oh, he recorded lots of little messages for me before he died. Loved it. Did you know his brother was a station master? I think he was always jealous."
"The girl--where is she? Can I talk to her again?" Sherlock asked.
"Poor little thing. Alone in the sky in a great big plane with nowhere to land. But where in the world is she? It's a clever little puzzle. If you want to apply yourself to it, I can reconnect you; but first...." She said then she sits back in her chair and swings it around to face the side.
Behind her, out on the balcony beyond the windows, a woman is sitting on a chair facing the room. Large solid handcuffs are attached either side of the seat and the woman's wrists are managed at the other end kf the cuffs. "That's my wife." The governor exclaimed, his eyes widen in fear. "Oh, God, that's my wife!"
"I'm going to shoot the governor's wife." said Eurus. Mycroft turns away, putting his hand up to his mouth.
"Please, no. Please. Help her!" The governor begs turning towards Sherlock.
"...in about a minute. Bang. Dead!" Eurus said.
"Please don't do that." You begged.
"Well, you can stop me." Eurus replied.
"How?" Sherlock asked her.
"There's a gun in the hatch. Take it." Eurus said.
Sherlock walks over to the hatch at the side of the glass. It slides open as he approaches and he bends down and picks up the pistol from inside. "You want to save the governor's wife? Choose either Doctor Watson or Sergeant (y/n) or Mycroft to kill the governor." Eurus said. John turns away, a bitter smile on his face, while Mycroft lifts his head from where it had been resting on his hand. You put your hands over your face and shake your head as the governor half cries half gasps.
"Oh....oh God!" He exclaims. John turns back towards the screen, his face grim, while you move your hands off of your face as Mycroft stares at Sherlock wide-eyed. Sherlock looks at the governor and takes a step towards him from behind.
"You can't do it, Sherlock. If you do it, it won't count. I'll kill her anyway. It has to be your brother or your wife or your friend." Eurus said as the governor turns around to look at Mycroft.
"You have to do this." He said to him. Mycroft shakes his head and the governor turns to Sherlock. "Eurus will kill her." He pleads. Sherlock looks down for a long moment, then releases the grip and tosses the gun a little into the air before catching it by the muzzle.
"Doesn't appear we have a choice." Sherlock said as he walks across the cell.
"Right, then." Eurus said.
Sherlock walks over to his brother, holding out the gun's grip towards him. "Countdown starting." Eurus stated. Sherlock stops a few steps in front of Mycroft and gestures with the gun, urging him to take it.
"How long?" Mycroft asked.
"No, no, no. The countdown is for me. Withholding the precise deadline will apply the emotional pressure more evenly. Where possible, please give me an explicit verbal indication of your anxiety levels." She said as the brothers' eyes are fixed on each other and Sherlock turns his head towards the glass but doesn't look directly at the screen while John has his head lowered and his eyes screwed shut while you have your hand over your mouth.
"I can't always read them from your behavior." Eurus said as Mycroft shakes his head.
"I can't do this. Can't. It's murder." Mycroft replied, breathily.
"This is not murder. This is saving my wife." The governor said, anxiously. Mycroft looks across him, nervously, running his tongue along the inside of his lips.
"I'm particularly focused on Internal conflicts, where strategising around a largely intuitive moral code appears to create a counter-intuitive tuition result." said Eurus as Mycroft stares down at the grip of the gun.
"I will not kill. I will not have blood on my hands." Mycroft said, shaking his head.
"Yes, very good. Thank you." said Eurus.
"Killing my wife is what you're doing." The governor said to Mycroft.
He looks down at the gun again and backs away. "No." He said, his voice trembling. Sherlock holds his gaze for a moment then lowers his eyes and turns away. "Okay, fine." He said then he turns to you and offers you the gun.
"(Y/N)." He said.
You look up at him and said. "I-I don't know....shooting someone who's causing you harm is different than just shooting them for no reason."
"But you're saving my wife." The governor said, tearfully.
"Hang on, she doesn't need this kind of stress on her. Not with her being pregnant." John said.
"Good point." Sherlock mutters the hands the gun to John.
"Doctor Watson. Are you married?" The governor asked him.
"I was." John said, holding Sherlock's gaze.
"What happened?" The governor asked.
"She died." John replied.
"What would you give to get her back? I mean, if you could, if it was possible?" The governor asked John as he approaches him.
You and the boys look at each other for a moment before the governor asked. "What would you do to save her?" He gestures towards the screen and said. "Eurus will kill me. Please save my wife."
Eurus reaches to the desk and picks up the remote. "There will, I'm afraid, be regular prompts to create an atmosphere of urgency." She said and the light turn red again and a close up of Moriarty's face appears on screen and he starts to make tick-tock noises for a few seconds before Eurus appears again on screen and the lights turn white again.
John reaches out and takes the pistol in his right hand. Mycroft turns away, covering his face with one hand. You and Sherlock step to one side as John turns to the governor. "What's your name?" He asked.
"David." The governor replied.
"And you're sure about this, David?" John asked him.
"Course I'm bloody sure." David replied, his voice full of tense.
"Nearly there." Eurus warned and John hesitates for a moment.
"Right. D'you want to to....pray, or anything?" John asked him.
"With Eurus Holmes in the world, who the hell would I pray to?" David asked.
"You're a good man, and you are doing a good thing." John said.
"So are you." David said, softly.
He smiles anxiously, closing his eyes and pulling in a deep breath. John raises the pistol in front of him to point at David. You and Sherlock step back alittle bit, him taking your hand in his as David jumps and gasps as John looks at him, his face set, and his fingers settles more firmly against the trigger.
"Please!" David said in a tearful anguished whisper. John's hand lowers alittle, then his face becomes more determined and he raises the gun to its former position.
Crying, David raises one hand to stop him and the turns around, presenting his back to John. Unhappy with shooting someone in the back, John bends his arm and lifts the pistol upwards. He looks across to you and Sherlock for a moment then turns back to David, who jumps and gasped again.
John pats his shoulder twice and David gets down on his knees, still facing away from him. "Oh, God!" He said tearfully as John puts the muzzle of the gun to the back of his head. He lifts the gun away and leans down towards David and said. "I know that you're scared, but you should also be very proud."
"Just do it." David said, staring ahead of himself.
John pats his shoulder again, steps back again and aims the gun at the back of his head again. "Be quick!" David said as the lights turn red again and Moriarty's face pops up and he starts to make the ticking sounds again.
"This is very good, Doctor Watson." Eurus said as David squeezes his eyes shut and crystal, silently. "I should have fitted you with a cardiograph." Eurus said.
"Goodbye, David." John said, tensely, as Moriarty continues with the ticking but finally it stops and the lights turn white again. "Please!" David begged, desperately, as John's finger tightens on the trigger.
But he lowers the gun and turns to Sherlock. "I can't. I'm sorry. I can't do it." He said. "I know. It's all right." Sherlock said as David falls forward on his hand.
Suddenly, David scrambles to his feet and runs to John, snatching the pistol out of his hand and raising it in front of himself with both shaking hands as he stumbles backwards, crying. "Stop! No, no, stop!" You shouted as you and the boys back away and hold out placatory hands towards David.
"I'm sorry." He said, tearfully.
"It's all right." Sherlock said.
"I'm so sorry." David said and he turns the pistol and pushes the tip of the muzzle under his chin. "Remember me." He said.
"NO!" You, John and Sherlock said as the four of you rush towards him but he pulls the trigger.
The four of you slow down and stop, John let's out an anguished sigh as Mycroft turns away, trying not to vomit. You shake your head as Sherlock looks over at John. "Are you all right?" He asked. John has his head down and clenched his hands but raises his head to look at Sherlock.
"Interesting." Eurus said as Sherlock turns and walks towards the glass. "All right, there you go. You got what you wanted....and he's dead." Sherlock said.
"Dead or alive he really wasn't very interesting, but you four....you four were wonderful. Thanks to you. You see what you did, Doctor Watson, specifically because of your moral code because you don't want blood on your hands, two people are dead instead of one." She said.
"Two people?" You asked.
"Yes. Sorry, hang on." She said and she rotates the chair so that she's facing the window and lifts her pistol and fires at the tied up woman. John raises both his hands to his head and backs away in frustration as Mycroft gasps and turns away. "Oh my God." You whispered as Eurus turns back to face you and the boys.
"What advantage did your moral code grant you? She asked as Sherlock looks at the screen, dispassionately.
"You didn't have to kill her!" John shouted.
"The condition of her survival was that you or (y/n) or Mycroft had to kill her husband. This is an experiment. There will be rigour. Sherlock, pick up the gun. It's your turn next. When I tell you to use it--and I will--remember what happend this time." She said as Sherlock bends over and picks up the gun.
"What if I don't want the gun?" He asked.
"Oh, the gun is intended for mercy." She replied.
"For whom?" Sherlock asked.
"You." She said.
"How so?" He asked, raising his head.
"If someone else had to die, would you really want to do it with your bare hands? It would waste valuable time." She said as Sherlock turns to look at you and John.
"Probably just take it." You said as Sherlock takes out the clip and checks it, the slots it back to the grip.
"There's only one bullet left." He said.
"You will only need one. But you will need it." She replied as a second panel on the left wall slides to one side, revealing a narrow passageway. "Please, go though. There's a fee tasks for you, and a girl on a plane is getting very, very scared." She said. You look at the passageway the turn to Mycroft and asked. "Treats?"
"Yes. You know, a violin." Mycroft replied.
"In exchange for....?" Sherlock asked.
"She's very clever." said Mycroft.
"I'm beginning to think you're not." Sherlock said, precisely.
The lights turn red as Mycroft lowers his eyes and Moriarty's voice sounds cheerful over the speakers. "Come on now! Aaaaaaaalll aboard! Choo-choo! Choo-choo!" He said. Sherlock looks over at you and reaches out his hand for you which you gladly take and the both of you walk, hand in hand, towards the corridor, John following behind you.
Looking unhappily down at David's body, Mycroft follows the trio.
