Chapter 4: Don't You Think It's Clever?

At the Special Unit, Sherlock steps onto a marked area on the floor and few feet in front of a door. The white lighting above his head begins to oscillate back and forth. He hears a violin playing but it is faint. "You 'aven't been down 'ere, 'ave you? Silence of the Lambs, basically." A guard said to Sherlock.

"You what?" Sherlock asked in an Irish accent.

"Keep your distance; stay at least three feet away from the glass an' all that." The guard said as the lights above Sherlock turn green then back to white. He looks across to the man and noticed he has headphones on.

"Why the headphones?" Sherlock asked, jerking his head towards the man.

"She doesn't stop playin', sometimes for weeks." The guard said.

"Beautiful." Sherlock said, referring to the music.

"Kills you in the end." said the guard.

"Aye. Still beautiful, though." Sherlock replied as the door slides open and he walks inside.

The door closes behind him and he instantly straightens up from his slouch. He takes off his jacket and drops it to the floor then starts to remove his disguise as the elevator takes him down.

Finally the doors slide open and Sherlock sees a wide wall made up of three floor to ceiling glass panels. On each of the panels, about three feet from the floor, a notice has been stenciled onto the glass reading in white letters "MAINTAIN DISTANCE OF THREE FEET".

On the other side of the glass is a large semi-circular room lined with bare grey panels. Soft white lighting comes from the tops of the panels and a large circular panel of lights in the middle of the ceiling sends green light down into the room.

Running down the middle of the room is a rectangular strip of white flooring and the rest is grey, matching the wall. There is a bed at the far end of the room design to the left near the end is a seat and table fastened to the wall. In the middle of the room, Eurus stands with her back to the door, playing a Bach-like piece on her violin. Sherlock steps forward and the lift doors close behind him.

The overhead lighting turns from green to white as Eurus stops playing and stands there unmoving. After a couple of seconds she starts to play again.
Sherlock stands silently, blinking frequently, as he starts to have flashes back to his younger self running around in the water while Redbeard trots behind him. He presses his lips together uncomfortably but doesn't move while Eurus continues to play.

Over at the governor's office, you, John and Mycroft sit in chairs around the table watching a recording on a large screen which shows four different angles of Eurus in her cell. "Why am I here?" She asked to someone off screen.

"Why do you think you're here?" A man's voice asked.

"No-one ever tells me." Eurus replied. Then she looks over to whoever was behind off screen.

"Am I being punished?" She asked.

"You've been bad." The man said.

"There's no such thing as bad." Eurus said in a sing-song voice.

"What about good?" asked the man.

"Good and bad are fairytales. We have evolved, you attach an emotional significance to what is nothing more than survival strategy of the pack animal. We are conditioned to invest divinity in utility. Good isn't really good, evil isn't really wrong, and bottoms aren't really pretty. You are a prisoner of your own meat." She said.

"Why aren't you?" The man asked.

"I'm too clever." She said, slowly, as she looks straight into the camera. You don't know why but this just made you feel....unsettled?.....uncomfortable....? You weren't for sure.

Meanwhile back in Eurus's cell, Sherlock takes one step forward and immediately Eurus starts to play a frenetic and rapid string of notes. Sherlock lifts his foot from the floor and moves it back and Eurus resumes her previous tune.

After a few minutes, she stops and lowers her bow but doesn't turn around. "Did you bring it?" She asked, her voice coming from the speakers. "I'm sorry?" Sherlock asked, raising an eyebrow at her. "My hairband. Did you bring it like I asked?" Eurus asked. "I'm not one of the.....I-I don't work here." Sherlock replied, hesitantly.

"My special hairband." She said.

"I'm not one of your doctors." Sherlock replied, firmly.

"The one I made you steal, from Mummy." Eurus said, exasperated, then she turns to face him. "That was the last thing I said to you, remember, the day they took me away." She said.

"No." Sherlock said, shaking his head slightly.

"No?" She asked.

"No, we've spoken since then. You came round my flat a few weeks back; you pretended to be a woman called Faith Smith. We had chips." said Sherlock.

"Does this mean you didn't bring my hairband?" She asked.

"How did you manage to get out of this place? How did you do that?" Sherlock asked her, ignoring her question.

"Easy. Look at me." She replied.

"I am looking at you." He said.

"You can't see it, can you? You try and try but you just can't see; you can't look." She said.

"See what?" Sherlock asked her.

She holds out her violin towards him and asked. "What do you think?" Sherlock stares at the violin for a moment before replying. "Beautiful."

"You're not looking at it." She said as he swallows and closes his eyes briefly.

"I meant your playing." He said.

"Oh, the music." She said as she lowers the violin and turned it around to look at the front. "I never know if it's beautiful or not; only if it's right." She said.

"Often they're the same thing." said Sherlock.

She looks over at him, again, and said. "If they're not always the same thing, what's the point in beauty?" Then she turns the violin to face Sherlock. "Look at the violin." She said.

"I need to know how you escaped." said Sherlock.

"Look at the violin." She said, firmly. Sherlock sighs then focuses in on it.

"It's Stradivarius." He replied.

"It's a gift." said Eurus.

"Who from?" Sherlock asked her.

"Me." She stated then she walks to her right, where a hatch is set into the wall and floor at the edge of the glass. She puts the violin and boy into it and the opening revolved round to Sherlock's side of the glass.

Eurus walks back into the middle of the room while Sherlock goes over to pick up the instrument. He walks back to the middle of the floor and looks down at it. "Why?" He asked her. "You play, don't you?" She asked, half turning away from him.

"How did you know?" Sherlock asked her.

She turns her head towards him and said. "How did I know? I taught you, don't you remember? How can you not remember that?"

"Eurus, I don't remember you at all." Sherlock replied.

"Interesting." She said, smiling slightly at him.

"Mycroft told me you'd rewritten your memories; he didn't tell me you'd written me out completely." She continued.

"What do you mean, rewritten?" He asked her.

"You still don't know about Redbeard, do you?" She asked, looking at him intensely. Sherlock gives her a grim look and she lets out a small chuckle. "Oh. This is going you be such a good day." She said.

Back in the office, Mycroft slumps back in his chair no longer watching the screen while you and John watch it, intensely. "Everyone we sent in there; it's-it's hard to describe. It's....it's like she...." The governor stammered until Mycroft speaks. "...recruited them." He said.

"Enslaved them." The governor replied.

"She's been capable of that since she was five. She's an adult now. I warned you; I ordered you!" Mycroft said.

The governor sighs and smiles slightly and said. "She's clinically unique. We had to try."

"At what cost?" You asked, turning your attention to him.

The governor doesn't respond. "What cost? Tell me the worst thing that has happened." Mycroft said, trying to keep his voice from rising.

"She kept suggesting to Doctor Taylor that he should kill his family." The governor replied.

"And?" said Mycroft.

"He said it was like an earworm; couldn't get her out of his head." He said.

"And?" Mycroft said.

"He left."

"And?" You asked.

"Killed himself." replied the Governor.

"And?" Mycroft said, after a brief pause.

"....his family." Governor said.

You look down at the floor then turn your head to John, who glances at you, then the both of you look back at the screen, continuing to watch the video of Eurus.

Back at the cell, Eurus said. "Play for me."
"I need to know how you got out of here." Sherlock said to her.

"You know already. Look at me. Look and play." She replied, exasperated. Keeping his eyes on hers, he lifts the violin and starts to play Bach's Sonata No. 1 in G minor but he only played about a second worth of the music before Eurus interrupts.

"No, not Bach; you clearly don't understand it. Play you." She said, sternly.

"Me?" He asked.

"You." She said.

Sherlock hesitates for a long moment before he settles on a piece of music he actually wrote for you. You, of course, haven't heard it yet because he was still working on it because he wanted it to be perfect; like you.

He lifts the bow and begins to play it. The music was soft, sweet and gentle. Eurus picked up on that and said. "Oh! You've had sex."

"How do you know?" Sherlock asked.

"The music. I've had sex." Eurus said as Sherlock continues to play the music.

"How?" He asked her.

"One of the nurses got careless. I liked it. Messy, though. People are so breakable." She replied.

"I take it he didn't consent." Sherlock said as he continues to play, staring at her.

"He?" She asked.

"She?" Sherlock asked her.

"Afraid I didn't notice in the heat of the moment and afterwards.....well, you couldn't really tell. Is that vibrato or is your hand shaking?" She asked as Sherlock finishes the long note he was playing. He stops and lowers the violin and bow as Eurus lifts one side of her mouth in a smile.

In the office, Mycroft has stood up and is leaning on the desk with both of his hands. John, arms folded, has turned to look at the governor, who has sat down at the other side, while you sit across from him, glaring at the man. "I warned you explicitly: no-one was to talk to her alone!" Mycroft said to the governor, angrily.

"You spoke to her." The governor defended.

"I know what I'm doing!" Mycroft said, sternly.

"You even brought her a visitor on Christmas Day." The governor said and, at this, you and John frowns.

"I took a calculated risk." Mycroft said, quietly.

"You gave her a Christmas present. Remember her Christmas present?" asked the governor.

"I am aware of the dangers Eurus poses, and equipped to deal with them." Mycroft said to him, firmly.

"What dangers?" You asked him.

Mycroft straightens up and said. "Eurus doesn't just talk to people. She....reprograms them. Anyone who spends time with her is automatically compromised." You and John look over at the screen as Eurus, in the video, says. "I'm only trying to help you. We can help each other. Helping someone.....is the best way you can help yourself."
"I don't trust you." The man said.

In the cell, Sherlock stares at his sister for a moment then said. "So clearly you remember me." Eurus starts to walk slowly forwards as she says. "I remember everything; every single thing. You just need a big enough hard drive."

"Sherlock." Your voice said, over his earpiece.

"Not now, love." He said, quietly.

"Vatican Cameos." You warned him.

"In a minute." He said and he takes out his earpiece and places it in his pocket while, back over the office, you take your finger away from your earpiece and close your eyes in despair.

Back in the cell, Eurus said. "Let's continue." She stops a few steps back from the glass wall and said. "Did they tell you to keep three feet from the glass?"

"Yes." He replied.

"Be naughty. Step closer." She said.

"Why?" He asked.

"Do it. Step closer." She dared.

"Tell me want you remember." He said.

"You, me, and Mycroft. Mycroft was quite clever. He could understand things if you went a bit slow but you...you were my favorite." She said with a small smile.

Sherlock takes one step forward then brings his feet together again. "Why was I your favorite?" He asked.

"Cause I could make you laugh. I loved it when you laughed. Once I made you laugh all night. I thought you were going you burst." She said as she takes one step forward and Sherlock smiles slightly "I was so happy." She said and Sherlock takes another step forward. "Then Mummy and Daddy had to stop me, of course." She said.

"Why?" He asked as she takes another step forward.

"Well, turns out I got it wrong. Apparently, you were screaming." She replied.

"Why was I screaming?" Sherlock asked then he heard, in his head, a whimper.

"Redbeard." He whispered and Eurus's head lifts slightly.

Sherlock raises his eyes to her and said. "I remember Redbeard."

"Do you, now?" She asked, softly, as she takes a step forward.

"Tell me what I don't know." Sherlock demanded as he steps forward again.

"Touch the glass." She replied and he frowns at her.

Mycroft is angrily pacing back and forth behind the table, hands in his pockets. "I put my trust in you, my implicit trust." He said to the governor.

You had enough to of this conversation so you decide to go out of the glass door onto the balcony, John follows behind you; making sure you were okay. John closes the door behind the two of you and you walk over to the edge of the balcony and look out over the sea crashing against the rocks below.

"You okay?" John asked as he places an arm on your shoulder.

"Yeah. It's just...." You started to say when, suddenly, something hits you. Your eyes widen as you look out and see a storm front coming. You let out a breath and turn around.

"(Y/N)? Everything OK?" He asked as he follows you back inside the office.

"It's obvious when it all started. Well, she was never the same after that Christmas. It's as if you woke her up." The governor said to Mycroft.

"That is entirely beside the point! You had your orders and failed to act on them." Mycroft said as you walk closer to him. "Listen to the tape." You said.

"Sorry?" Mycroft asked.

"Do it now. Listen." You said.

"My sister's methods of...." Mycroft started to say but John talks over him.

"Do as she says and just listen." He said, firmly.

Looking exasperated, Mycroft walks to the desk and picks up a remote control and increases the volume. "Bring me your wife. I want to meet her." Eurus said. "I don't think I need your help." The man said. "I can fix her for you, and then I'll give you her straight back, good as new." Eurus said. "I promise." She said after the footage fritzes for a moment. "That's all? What you're proposing is not....it's not right." The man said.

"Everyone who went in there got affected--Enslaved you said." You said to the governor, who shifts in his chair uncomfortably.

"Yes." He replied.

"One after the other." John said, finally understanding what you are getting at.

"Yes." The governor said.

"(Y/N). Doctor Watson, I think we've..." Mycroft said, frowning before John talks over him. "Shut up."

"Do you trust your wife?" Eurus asked the man.

"One question. That's your voice, isn't it?" You asked the governor as you pointed at the screen. He turns to look at you but his eyes go to the screen.

"If Eurus has enslaved you, then who exactly is in charge of this prison?" John asked. Mycroft stares towards the screen in shock as the governor stands up and reaches inside his pocket.

"I'm sorry." He said as he holds up a remote device in his hand.

"No." You said.

"Very, very sorry." He said.

"No." John said and the governor presses the button and, immediately, sirens go off and armed guards run into the room, aiming get their guns at you, Mycroft and John.

In the cell, Sherlock and Eurus are now only one step away from the glass wall between them. "Redbeard was my dog. I know what happened to Redbeard." He said.

"Oh, Sherlock, you know nothing. Touch the glass, and I'll tell you the truth." She replied in a condescending tone. She lifts up her left arm and said. "I'll touch it too, if you're scared." Sherlock looks towards her left hand, the fingers curled slightly. "You think it's a trick. You look so...unsure. You're not used to being unsure, are you?" She asked, softly.

"I'll do more common than you'd think." Sherlock replied as he slowly raises his right hand to match hers.

"Look at you. The man who sees through everything.....is exactly the man who doesn't notice...." She said as the two of them slowly move their hands towards each other.

At the moment when their hands should touch glass, Eurus reaches forward a little further and their fingertips touch, then she links her fingers into his. "....when there's nothing to see through." She said in a mock surprise. Sherlock breathes shakily and raises his eyes to her and she smiles.

"Do you see how it was done? I know you like explanations." She said as he blinks rapidly and looks towards their linked hands then focuses down to the warning which he had always assumed were on the glass and session the signs are attached and projected sideways.

"Signs. You suspended the signs." He said, breathlessly.

"And my voice? Throat mic. Puts me through the speakers." She said as there was a click sound and when she speaks, her voice becomes clearer. "Don't you think it's clever? Simple but clever?" She asked.

"Transparent." Sherlock replied, shakily.

"Well, you do keep asking me how I got out of here." She said then she unfolds her fingers and slowly pulls her hand away.

"Like this." She said, softly, as she stands there and looks at him for a moment, then quickly sucks in a harsh breath and brings both arms to slam her wrists against either side of Sherlock's head. He falls backwards to the floor and she hurls herself on top of him, shrieking savagely into his face as she presses her right arm down onto his throat.

As he struggles under her she screams out loudly. "Get in here, all of you! Stop me killing him!" The lift doors open and two guards run towards her. She is holding Sherlock's arms down with her left hand and right foot.
She raises her head to the guards and said, calmly. "No, no. Stop me in a minute." Then lowers her head to her brother and screams in his face while he chokes under her.

Outside the office, four yellow jumpsuited auxiliaries are marching you and John away, two each holding you by the arms. You look over at John, who stares back at you, and nod at each other. John kicks out at the ankle of the man on his right, who cries out in pain, and he turns to the other man and headbutts him.

You elbow the man on your right in the gut and he doubles over and you bring your right elbow down on the back of his neck while stepping on the foot of the man on your left. He lets go of your arm and you punch him across the face, knocking him out. John grabs your hand and the both of you race for the nearby stairs up to the Control Room.

"Red alert! Red alert! Big bad bouncy red alert!" said a voice in an American accent.

"Doctor Watson! Sergeant (y/n)!" The governor calls out as you and John continue up the stairs.

"Klingons attacking lower decks! Also, Cowboys in black hats, and Darth Vader! Don't be alarmed! I'm here now! I'm here now!" The voice said.

You and John slow down on the landing outside the glass room as you point towards the room to John. "Did you miss me? Did you miss me?" The voice asked.

In the glass room, while the technician slowly backs away, you see the screens are showing a heavy flow of water pouring down them but then they clear to each reveal Jim Moriarty staring into the camera. "Miss me? Miss me? Miss me? Miss me? Miss me? Miss me?" Jim asked as you and John stare at the screens in disbelief.

Behind you two, the lift doors open and two guards hurry out and they turn their rifles sideways and strike, firmly, in the back of your heads with the butt of the rifles. Next thing you know, everything goes dark but you still kept hearing "Miss me?" over and over again until you were completely knocked out.
