3 | going up?
Getting out of the taxi, I hand the driver the money that I owed him.
"Here you go, Sir," I say, and he nods at me with a smile as he takes it from my hand and barely a moment later someone is already rushing to get into his taxi.
Turning around, I look up at the apartment building in front of me and take a deep breath. This is a new start, and I'm going to be someone new.
I already looked at photos of what the inside of these apartments looked like, but now I've just got to hope that they have at least one available since it is so close to New York University.
Walking inside, I go up to the woman at the desk who is currently looking at something on her computer.
"Hello." She says looking up before I even get all the way up to her desk, so she must have heard my shoes against the floor with every step I took.
"Hello," I replied with a smile since she seemed really nice.
"How may I help you, dear?" She asked as I glanced around the room.
"I was wondering if you had any apartments left?" I asked, hopefully as I bit my lip.
"Let me check." She said as she began typing on her computer and then she smiled up at me.
"It's your lucky day. We have a few apartments available, but they are all the same. Would you like to get a quick tour of them?" She asks, but I shake my head ecstatically.
"No, can I take one right now?" I ask, and she nods.
"Sure dear, I'm just going to need you to fill out this paperwork really quick... And will you be paying with cash or credit?" She asks while handing me some forms and a pen.
"Cash," I say, as I start filling out the forms because I don't want to be traced by a credit card.
Once I'm done, and she takes the forms and money, I get the key to my new apartment.
"Thank you so much," I say, and she smiles.
"No problem. You are in apartment 201B. Do you need me to get someone to show you the way?" She asks, taking a look at her computer.
"No thank you, I'll manage," I say with a smile, and she nods.
"If you'd like, there is a refreshment bar right over there." She says pointing behind me and I grin.
"Okay, I'm going to go check it out before I go up," I reply, turning towards the refreshments because I haven't had water all day.
Walking over there, I grab a bottle of water before backing up because the elevators were right next to it when I bump right into something... More like someone.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry!" I exclaim as I glance back before I grab as many napkins from the table with water as I possibly could.
Turning around I try to hand the man whose coffee I just spilled the napkins without even looking up at him.
His white t-shirt is stained with coffee, and I feel so bad for bumping into him.
"I'm so, so sorry," I say shaking my head. My mind has been all over the place lately, so I've been bumping into people and tripping over nothing all day long.
"It's fine." A slightly familiar voice says, and I look up, seeing the same man I sat next to on my plane ride here.
"Um... Tyler?" I ask, hoping I got his name right.
"Hey, Anastasia." He says with a small smile as he uses the crazy amount of napkins I gave him to try and get the coffee out of his white shirt.
"Sorry, again for... You know, spilling your coffee." I say as he finally gives up on trying to take the stain out.
I'm honestly sort of surprised that he even remembered my name.
"It's fine." He says walking around me to put the now dirty napkins in the trash.
"So, what are you doing here?" He asks when he turns back around and stands in front of me again.
"I could ask you the same thing," I replied because I had no clue as to why he was here.
Has he been keeping tabs on me or something?
"You could, but I asked you first." He smirked, and I rolled my eyes.
"I just bought an apartment here," I said, holding up my key and he smiled.
"Really? Cool. I live in the building too." He said as he leaned towards the elevator and pressed the button.
What a coincidence, I thought shaking my head as the elevator doors opened.
"What's a coincidence?" He asked easing one of his eyebrows, and I froze.
Did I say that out loud?
"You did." He chuckled, and I blushed slightly as I walked ahead of him into the elevator.
"I'm sorry, sometimes I don't realize when I'm actually talking," I said, kind of stupidly with a small laugh and he laughed too.
"What floor are you on?" He asked as we were both already reaching to press the floor number.
Our hands touched as we both tried to press the button to the twentieth floor and we both pulled away quickly as if it never happened.
We stood in a comfortable, yet sort of awkward silence as the elevator went up. We stopped on the eighth floor, and the doors opened, revealing a girl that seemed to be nineteen or twenty.
"Going up?" She asked, and I nodded at the same time Tyler replied.
"Yea, Eva." He said, and she walked in smiling even wider.
" So Tyler, who is this?" She asked giving me a side glance, and I decided right there that she didn't seem sweet anymore. More like a jealous bitch for no reason at all.
I'm so tempted to just say 'his girlfriend' but I honestly don't want to deal with her reaction, so I went with the normal response and Tyler ended up responding at the exact same time. I feel like this stuff keeps happening.
"His friend."
"My friend."
"Okay..." Eva, I think her name is, responded giving me a look that said to back off her man.
The twentieth floor couldn't have come any sooner as I walked right off into the hall, looking for my apartment. Eva just wouldn't stop flirting with Tyler, and she is just so annoying. Can't she at least wait before she flirts so that I don't have to cringe so much?
Anyways, my apartment was really close to the elevator, and I thought I'd finally get rid of hearing Eva when Tyler stopped right next to me, and well Eva stopped with him too. I was about to turn towards him and ask what he wanted when I saw him putting his key into the door next to mine while Eva glared daggers at me.
"See you later neighbor." He said as Eva turned around, flipping her hair over her shoulder as she stomped down the hall and he walked into his apartment.
I guess I won't be getting away from them anytime soon...
