Chapter 19: Parth Galen

The next morning, everyone is in the boats again, rowing down Anduin. Aragorn taps Frodo on the shoulder. "Frodo. The Argonath. Long have I desired to look upon the kings of old. My kin," said Aragorn.

The Fellowship looks up at the towering splendor of the Argonath. Two majestic statues, carved out of the mountain, proudly stand on each side of the Anduin. Their left arms are held up, their palms facing outwards in gesture of warning. Stern were their faces. The Fellowship reaches the foot of Amon Hen, the Hill of Sight. As they reach the beach of Parth Galen, Boromir looks troubled and appears to be fighting a conflict within him. The Fellowship starts to make camp.

"We cross the lake at nightfall. Hide the boats and continue on foot. We approach Mordor from the north," said Aragorn.

"Oh yes. It's just a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muil. An impassable labyrinth of razor sharp rocks. And after that, it gets even better," said Gimli.

Pippin looks up, alarmed. "Festering, stinking marshlands far as the eye can see," Gimli continued.

"That is our road. I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master Dwarf," said Aragorn.

"Recover my strength," asked Gimli.

Legolas and Tauriel look into the forest around them, then turn to Aragorn. "We should leave now," said Legolas, wrapping an arm around Tauriel's waist.

"No. Orcs patrol the eastern shore. We must wait for the cover of darkness," said Aragorn.

"It is not the eastern shore that worries me. A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind. Something draws near. I can feel it," said Legolas.

"He's right, Aragorn. I sense it too," said Tauriel, resting her hand on her small baby bump.

Aragorn's eyes softened momentarily as he glanced at Tauriel's gesture, then nodded. "Very well, we stay. But we must be vigilant."

"Recover strength," muttered Gimli, turning to Pippin.

"Pay no heed to that, young Hobbit," said Gimli.

Merry, returning with some wood for the campfire, looks around alarmed. "Where's Frodo?" asked Merry.

Sam, who was half dozing, rouses with a start. Aragorn looks over the camp. His gaze stops on Boromir's shield, lying with the baggage, and he understands that also Boromir is gone.

In the forest, Frodo wanders around. He stands by an immense stone head, lying with its side on the ground. Boromir, gathering wood, sees Frodo and approaches him. Frodo starts backing away, Boromir continues to follow him.

"None of us should wander alone. You, least of all. So much depends on you, Frodo. I know why you seek solitude. You suffer, I see it day by day. You sure you do not suffer needlessly. There are other ways, Frodo. Other paths that we might take," said Boromir.

Frodo starts backing away from Boromir, who continues to walk towards him. "I know what you would say. It would seem like wisdom but for the warning in my heart," said Frodo.

"Warning? Against what? We're all afraid, Frodo. But to let that fear drive us, to destroy what hope we have, don't you see that is madness?" said Boromir.

"There is no other way," Frodo replied.

"I ask only for the strength to defend my people," said Boromir, throwing the gathered wood to the ground. "If you would but lend me the Ring."

"No," Frodo replied, stepping back.

"Why do you recoil? I am no thief," said Boromir.

"You are not yourself," said Frodo.

"What chance do you think you have? They will find you. They will take the Ring. And you will beg for death before the end," said Boromir.

Frodo turns and begins to run from Boromir. "You fool. It is not yours save by unhappy chance. It could have been mine," said Boromir, catching Frodo and tackling him. "It should be mine. Give it to me," said Boromir.

Frodo struggles to keep him away from the Ring. "Give it to me," said Boromir.

"No," Frodo replied, slipping the Ring on and disappearing. He kicks Boromir and runs away. Boromir looks around desperately. "I see your mind. You will take the Ring to Sauron. You will betray us. You go to your death, and to the death of us all. Curse you. Curse you and all the Halflings," said Boromir.

Boromir slips and falls to the ground. The madness of the Ring leaves him, and he comes to his senses. "Frodo. Frodo. What have I done. Please, Frodo," said Boromir. "Frodo, I'm sorry," Boromir continues.

Back at the camp, Legolas and Tauriel exchange worried glances. "We should find Frodo," Tauriel said, her hand tightening on Legolas's arm.

"Aragorn, Frodo and Boromir are missing. Something is amiss," Legolas said urgently.

Aragorn, who had been scanning the horizon, nodded grimly. "Spread out. Search the area but stay within sight of each other."

Legolas and Tauriel moved swiftly, their senses heightened. As they passed through the trees, Legolas glanced at Tauriel. "Are you feeling well?" he asked softly, concern lacing his voice.

Tauriel smiled faintly. "I am fine, Legolas. Our daughter is strong. We must focus on finding Frodo."

Legolas nodded, his eyes determined. "Stay close to me," he said, his voice firm.

As they continued their search, Tauriel suddenly stopped, her eyes narrowing. "I sense something," she whispered.

Legolas followed her gaze, his own senses alert. "This way," he said, leading Tauriel through the dense forest.

They moved quickly and silently, their Elven agility allowing them to navigate the terrain with ease. Soon, they heard the faint sounds of a struggle. Legolas drew his bow, while Tauriel readied her blades.

"Boromir's madness has taken hold," Tauriel said softly, her eyes filled with sorrow.

"We must help Frodo," Legolas replied, his voice steely with resolve.

They reached the clearing just as Frodo, invisible with the Ring, kicked Boromir and ran. Legolas and Tauriel rushed forward, Boromir looking up at them with a mixture of guilt and despair.

"Legolas... Tauriel... I did not mean to... I..." Boromir stammered, his eyes pleading.

"Boromir, the Ring's power is too great. It twists the minds of even the strongest among us," Legolas said, his voice calm but firm.

Tauriel knelt beside Boromir, her hand on his shoulder. "You must fight it, Boromir. We need you. The Fellowship needs you," she said gently.

Boromir nodded, tears in his eyes. "I will try. I am so sorry," he said, his voice breaking.

Legolas helped Boromir to his feet. "Come, we must return to the others. Frodo will need us all before this is over," he said.

As they made their way back to the camp, Legolas glanced at Tauriel, his eyes filled with pride and love. "You were right. Our daughter is strong, and so are you," he said softly.

Tauriel smiled, her hand resting on her baby bump. "And together, we will ensure she is born into a world free of Sauron's shadow," she said, her voice filled with determination.

They returned to the camp, where Aragorn and the others awaited them. "We found Boromir. Frodo is safe for now, but we must be vigilant," Legolas reported.

Aragorn nodded, his eyes grave. "We must remain united. The path ahead will be treacherous, but together, we will prevail," he said.

The Fellowship, strengthened by their bond and resolve, prepared for the challenges ahead, knowing that their greatest tests were yet to come.
