Argument for a Literal Genesis, Part One: Helens' Outburst

I believe in a literal six-day creation of the universe and a global flood, as recorded in the book of Genesis, and I believe science supports young earth creationism. So these next few chapters, I'm going to post excerpts from my dialogue assignments in a college earth science class I took. Feel free to discuss and debate in the comments!

During the 1980s, the volcano Mt. St. Helens errupted twice, layering the nearby ground with hundreds of feet of sediment. Shortly afterwards a mixture of snowmelt water and muddy debris created a catastrophic flood that tore through the newly layered sediment so harshly that it created a canon very similar in appearance to the much larger Grand Canyon. Obviously, it didn't take millions of years for the Mt. St. Helens canon to form like people say was necessary for the Grand Canyon. Thus, if it only took a small flood and a short amount of time to create the Mt. St. Helens canon, then there is a strong possibility that all that was necessary for the creation of the Grand Canyon was a very large flood and much less time than a million years. The global flood described in Genesis would no doubt have the capacity necessary to carve such a canon.

However, some people would counter such an idea and cite the carbon dates found in the Grand Canyon as proof that it formed over millions of years. However, in 1986 geologist Steve Austin used the K-Ar radiosotope method on the canyon to test its effectiveness. The method claimed that the ages of the rocks ranged from 340,000 to 2,800,000 years old, even though they were obviously less than a decade old! Obviously such a dating method is not nearly as reliable as one would hope.

Mt. St. Helens stands as proof that the world can be less than 10,000 years (even 6,000) years and still have the same geological formations that it has now if a global flood had indeed (as there is much evidence for, both biblical and scientific) occurred in the past. It further shows just how unreliable carbon dating methods can be. Obviously, there is not as much proof for the 'theory' of millions of years- or the Evolution that necessitates such a timeline- as is claimed. Moreover, there is definitely a strong possibility that the Genesis account of creation and the flood are accurate. What do you know, God could even be right!
