*Cue Carry on My Wayward Son*
Ten years ago, I made a crossroads deal and sold my soul to Crowley. The British king of hell stole my heart with two simple words. Hello boys. After that I was hooked. Supernatural first aired in 2005, but I didn't jump on the bandwagon until 2009. I turned on the T.V. one night looking for something to watch and came across Supernatural. I loved the episode, but I was sad at how lost on the storyline I was. Thank Chuck for Netflix.
I dove head first into the world of Supernatural and caught up on all the seasons easily. I knew my life was ruined after that. There was something addicting about the show. I couldn't tell if it was the attractive front men of the show that every girl and some men drooled over or the fact that I was always in the mood for a good horror show. Maybe it was both. Or maybe it was the amazing soundtrack that was its own character for the show.
Supernatural became a weekly ritual for me. I stopped what I was doing every Thursday night to spend an hour in front of my T.V. with my favorite snacks and favorite fictional characters. I wouldn't miss an episode. I spent part of my teenage years and my young adult years invested in a T.V. show that had most of my friends questioning if I was into witchcraft.
I knew instantly my life was over. I was sucked into another world, a crazy world full of demons, ghosts, and ghouls. Supernatural taught me a lot over the years. Three boys changed my life forever in just an hour every Thursday night. It was my escape from the real world, just me and the three main characters fighting off whatever demons we faced that week.
When life beats you down, NEVER give up. - Jared Padalecki
While the main characters were battling fictional demons, I was facing my own real demons. From a young age I suffered from severe anxiety and depression due to the stress of school and trying to figure out where I fit in. Supernatural saved me, not just the T.V. show, but the men behind the T.V. show as well. Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, and Jared Padalecki.
Some people find it weird when you say that a celebrity or celebrities saved your life. How can someone you've never met save your life? I've gotten that question a lot through the years, but I feel until you've had it happen to you that you'll never fully understand. You can save anyone whether you know them or not.
Don't underestimate your own strength. To persevere. To make it through the most difficult times. And just as importantly, don't underestimate your ability to help someone else during their most difficult times. Sometimes all it takes is a kind word, or gesture, to help someone make it through their day. - Jared Padalecki
Jensen, Jared, and Misha are very open and speak honestly about everyday struggles such as anxiety and depression. Their encouraging words of Always Keep Fighting and You Are Enough kept me going and still keep me going to this day. Such simple words spoken by such inspirations.
Though the show is a big part of my life, the men behind the show are an even bigger part. I love how dedicated they are to their fanbase. The fanbase is outrageous. Young, old, male, or female, there seems to be a place for everyone. Everyone loves Supernatural for their own reasons. It's what makes us family. The bond is strong.
A wise man once told me family don't end in blood, but it doesn't start there either. Family cares about you, not what you can do for them. Family's there through the good, the bad, the ugly, all of it. They got your back even when it hurts. That's family. - Eric Kripke
Supernatural helped me find two people, who are now my best friends. I don't know where I would be without these two girls in my life. Not only are we huge fans of Supernatural, but we are huge fans of other T.V. shows as well. We spend countless nights texting each other discussing each episode to its fullest.
Our bond is strong and no one can break it. We would take a bullet for each other. One of my friends is now the Godmother of my daughter. I don't have many friends. Most of mine are on the internet, and I've never met them in real life. I've learned that that doesn't matter. Your bond is unbreakable no matter where you are.
Hey, Assbutt! - Misha Collins as Castiel
The show has been my lifeline for many years. It was a ritual every Thursday to stop what I was doing and watch it. Supernatural is more than just a T.V. show. It taught me a lot of life lessons along the way. It taught me that enemies can be friends, family will always fight, and sometimes a little pie with some road tunes can make everything a little bit better. It also taught me that salt is not some random table seasoning that you put on your mashed potatoes at a Sunday dinner.
One thing I really like about the show is how it covers so many different stages of life. There's an episode for everyone whether it has happiness, sadness, anger, or guilt in it, just to name a few. And death. . . .lots and lots of death. Don't worry, everyone in Supernatural is like a cat. They have nine lives. If they die just question, are they dead or are they dead dead?
There's been episodes where I've cried, I've cheered, and I've wanted to flip tables from how angry I've become. I never thought I would become so engrossed in fictional characters. They feel like family some days, and some days I wish that I could jump in the television screen and save them like they did me.
My friends I've made through my love for this show have become more like family to me than my blood family. There's no judgement in the fandom, just love. Love for everyone who is trying to find love in places that they never thought they would find. They're just trying to find a place where they can be accepted.
Why should we trust you? - Dean Winchester
Good God, don't. Never trust anyone. - Crowley
The series of Supernatural is coming to a close this fall. We are heading into the fifteenth and final season of the show. It's bittersweet. Most T.V. shows don't see past season one anymore, let alone another fourteen. Sometimes fans lose interest after so many seasons, but this show and its fandom shocks me every day.
The fandom seems to be growing more and more each day. There's some fans that weren't even born when this show started! Some fans are no longer with us. Some have lost interest in the show. Some have a better seat in the sky and get to watch it with us even though they're not physically there. . . .except for you Adam. We all hope you enjoy your cage in Hell.
We have watched Jensen and Jared grow up in front our eyes on T.V. for fifteen years and we've grown right along with them. People ask me: Why do you like the show so much? To be honest, if I told you everything I liked about the show I would sound like a complete fan girl and maybe a little obsessive. Which if you talk to anyone who knows me, I am, but that's beside the point.
Without having to do that, I can easily say this. The men behind the show and their characters taught me life lessons that I can carry with me until the day I die. I don't like the show because of the storyline. I don't like the show because it gives me a good scare on occasion. I don't like the show because there are three very hot men at the forefront.
I like the show because of the friendships I've made. I like the show because it has relatable characters and relatable storylines. I like the show because of its awesome soundtrack. I like the show because of the messages it brings to us every week. I like the show because it taught me one thing in life that I struggled to find on my own. Happiness.
Who cares where happiness comes from? Look, we're all a little weird, we're all a little wacky, some more than others, but if it works, it works. - Dean Winchester
I like Jensen and his character Dean because even though he's the toughest of the bunch, he still has a soft side. Dean is the one who will run through the door first and take a bullet for you. He wears his heart on his sleeve. He can also make a mean sandwich. He is the brawn of the two brothers.
I like Jared and his character Sam because he is the "nerd" in the group of sorts. I've always wondered what would've happened if he didn't go on the hunting trip with Dean. I like Sam because of how smart he is, but yet he doesn't rub it in your face that he is smarter than you. He is the brains of the operation.
I like Misha and his character Castiel because he is the comedic, fun, awkward third wheel of the group. At least that is what everyone seems to think. Dean and Sam would do anything for that Angel even if it meant dying for good. I like Castiel because he makes me want to embrace the awkwardness in my life and live with it!
As I said before, Supernatural is coming to an end. The season fifteen premiere date is, Thursday, October 10th at 8pm EST. This season like all of the others will hopefully not disappoint. I'm sad to see it go. It's almost like closing another chapter on my crazy life, but at least there's reruns.
Supernatural, fare thee well.
Are you ready for the last season? How do you feel about Supernatural ending? Are you a fan who left but is catching up to see what has happened since you've gone? Which character would you love to see come back for the final season?
