Chasing (The) Arcane: Ext. Ver.
by eggyeuls
Hey there, fellow fans! If you're like me and have been swept away by the magic of "Arcane," then you know exactly what I'm gonna be talking about. This stunning Netflix series, inspired by League of Legends, has completely captivated audiences since its first release in November 2021. With its jaw-dropping visuals, a broad array of beautifully complex characters and a storyline that hits you right in the feels, it's no wonder we're all obsessed. Not to mention how the soundtrack serves a feast for everyone, no matter what you tend to enjoy.
As you might've noticed, I've already had the chance to write a rather objective article about "Arcane" for our "WTF...andom" project - but I'd be stupid to not take the chance and write something a little more personal here. So let's dive into what makes "Arcane" such a gem for me (and many others), shall we?
While there's much to admire about this series, I want to focus on three aspects that personally resonate with me the most: my favorite characters and their arcs, the delicious art style and editing the creators fed us with, as well as some of my favorites from the absolutely masterful music and soundtrack.
Characters and Storyline: The Heart and Soul of "Arcane"
First up, let's talk about the characters - because wow, can we just give a round of applause to the writing team?
At the core of "Arcane" lies its pretty character-driven narrative. The way it dives into the social divides and the struggle for power creates this rich mix of conflict and intrigue that totally hooks you in and really makes you care about what happens next. No matter how you feel about the characters - whether you have a favorite or someone who just rubs you the wrong way - you can't help but get invested in everyone's story because they're all so intricately connected.
Jinx is my favorite character, as I find a lot of my personal struggles and experiences represented through her chaotic yet deeply emotional journey. Let's be real: who doesn't feel a little lost sometimes? Her quest for identity and belonging, dealing with loss and trying to break certain cycles is something that really hits home for me. On top of that I also just love her character design, though overall I do think I prefer how arcane portrayed and developed the characters, and how they switched things up for some as well. Which does bring me to another favorite, Vi - her Arcane design really has me giggling and kicking my feet at times. But on a deeper level, being an older sister myself, I can't help but recognize a personal tie to her as well. I totally get her protective nature and the burdens that come with it.
The show beautifully captures the complexities of trauma and relationships, showcasing the love, loss and the chaos of (blood-bound or found) family, the inevitable consequences of everyone's decisions. Their stories remind me of my own familial dynamics and experiences, making them so relatable and deeply impactful. And while there are, no doubt, many other intriguing characters with a variety of complex and inspiring arcs, it's Vi and Jinx's story that I keep coming back to. Their struggles and triumphs, progress and setbacks, remind me that we're all just trying to find our way, even when things get messy.
Art and Editing: A Visual Feast
One cannot discuss "Arcane" without acknowledging its groundbreaking art style. The unique blend of 2D and 3D animation creates a visually stunning world and the creators have crafted a world that is both gritty and vibrant, perfectly capturing the essence of Piltover and Zaun. As someone who dabbles in art and graphic design, I can't help but admire the attention to detail in every single frame. The creators really nailed it, working together in such harmony to create visuals that match the emotional punch of the story. The color palettes, character designs and action sequences all blend together to create a mesmerizing experience that just really pulls you in. Plus, the attention to detail in the background art and visual storytelling adds another layer of richness to the experience, making you want to dive deeper into Piltover and Zaun.
Now, browsing through Pinterest or TikTok after an episode has become one of my favorite rituals - seeing other fans point out hidden Easter eggs or clever foreshadowing is such a blast. There's something incredibly rewarding about catching those little details that add more depth to the story. It feels like a treasure hunt, and we're all in it together! Is there any such thing you found yourself or just something that's really stuck in your mind?
Music and Soundtrack: The Beats That Move Us
The soundtrack of "Arcane" is pure fire - technically, emotionally and just in all the ways. The first season's tracks had me feeling like a total badass at times, especially when I went to the gym and needed an extra push of motivation and vibes. Even before watching the show, I was already hooked and had a bunch of the songs added to my Spotify playlist.
Now, season two's soundtrack took me a little time to warm up to, but wow, it really grew on me. When I finally got to watch the scenes unfold alongside the music, it helped a lot to connect with the emotional depth of the songs. A few of those tracks have found a permanent home on my daily playlist actually. While there are some really epic and intense ones, there are also a bunch that just capture that "I feel a little emotional and sensitive today, let's fuel that up some more" vibe perfectly for me (I'm looking at you, "The Line").

If I had to put together a top 5 list of my favorite songs from both seasons (or the franchise altogether), it would probably look a little something like this:
1. "The Line"
2. "Fantastic"
3. "Remember Me"
4. "Get Jinxed"
5. "To Ashes and Blood"
But let's be real; it's impossible to stop there. I mean, my top 5 quickly turned into a top 10 when I prepared this article, because my indecisive self just can't help it! So here are a few more that I absolutely adore and have to mention too:
6. "Ma Meilleure Ennemie"
7. "What Could've Been"
8. "PARANOIA"
9. "Playground"
10. "Dynasties & Dystopia"
Seriously, there are just so many amazing tracks - it's like a musical treasure trove! There's something for everyone, no matter what genre or vibe you enjoy or what to try out. And let's not forget about the instrumentals; I haven't even had a chance to dive into those yet (outside watching the show), but I can only imagine how epic they are! You can so easily build your own little "I need something to make me cry" or "let's motivate ourselves to do house cleaning, but in an epic way" playlists.
Conclusion: A Personal Journey Through "Arcane"
In wrapping this up, I just want to say that "Arcane" is way more than just a show; it's a journey of self-discovery and a celebration of what it means to be human. The characters, the storytelling, the art and the music all come together to create something truly special.
Vi and Jinx's stories resonate with my own experiences, while the stunning visuals and soundtracks speak to my love of art and creativity. Diving into this series has inspired me to reconnect with my own artistic expression. I have been in a really bad slump lately, for everything creative about my life, whether that's designing, writing or even just daydreaming. But I want to craft something that digs deep into identity and the beautiful messiness of relationships. After all, that's what makes storytelling, whether it's through words, visuals or sounds, so powerful - it reflects our own lives in ways we might not even realize.
The community around "Arcane" is another huge highlight. It's like we're all part of this big, vibrant family that celebrates the show together. From hilarious fan art to heartfelt discussions about character arcs, it's amazing to see how everyone connects over shared experiences. It's a reminder that storytelling has this incredible power to unite people, no matter where they come from.
"Arcane" is a shining example of how powerful narratives can captivate our hearts and minds, reminding us of our shared humanity. So here's to more stories that inspire, challenge and connect us. If you haven't yet taken the plunge into "Arcane," trust me, you're in for a treat!
