19: Loyalty

Loud rumbling sounds of thunder clashed across the sky.

Dark grey clouds enveloped the heavens as heavy drops of rain poured over every surface of the earth...on every inch of the entire compound.

The early night sky took over the reign of the sun, as if taking away the color of life and replacing it with the shade of grief.

Tall opened windows of the large room made way for the cold wind to enter. White thin fabrics draped over the bed, swaying as the cool wind brushed them.

There laid Wendy Fernandes.

Plain white sheet covered her up to her clavicles. Her body was neatly washed by the women in the Family.

Her long hair was loose. It spread over the cushion with its color of brilliant blue.

Her skin as white as snow, lips so pale and lifeless.

And her eyelashes, never to flutter open once more.

There was silent weeping as sorrow consumed the space of the room. Everyone had shed a tear since morning until sundown. Now, nothing was left of their tears but silent sobs. Nothing could bring Wendy back even if they died crying.

The bronze-colored double doors of the room forcefully opened.

"Where is she?!"

It was Jellal.

His eyes were red from crying...and he still was.

Then there he saw her, in bed. Dead.

"Wendy!" he cried out as he went and knelt on the side of the bed.

Erza never looked as terrified as she was that very moment. She had her hands over her mouth as she stared at the little girl's body.

When they received news about what happened, not a second was wasted as they headed straight back to Japan.

"Wendy..." Jellal continued to cry as he slowly turned her pale face to his direction, "No...no, no..."

As they all listened to him, they had to fight back the urge to cry all over again.

"Not you...not your innocent life..." he continued.

His fingers moved to her forehead to push back the hair from her face.

And he wished he didn't, because it only made it clearer for him that she was brutally murdered. Not what she deserved.

At the center of her forehead revealed a clean shot. There was a bullet hole that should not have been there.

With the rage he had within him, he stood up carrying a look of pain and anger.

"WHO DID THIS?!" he shouted carelessly, his gaze passing everyone in the room, "WHO WAS IT?!!"

None of them spoke. Even Natsu just looked at him with his hollow eyes.

Jellal grabbed the antique vase on the bedside table and smashed it on the floor.

"TELL ME WHO KILLED MY SISTER!"

And when no one made a sound, he aggressively trudged towards the Don. His face was still wet with tears, the sadness not a secret. Of course, he was her brother.

He harshly grabbed Natsu's black suit. Lucy jerked in dissatisfaction when she saw this.

"WHO WAS IT?!" he shouted, forgetting his place like a madman, "TELL ME! I DESERVE TO KNOW!"

Laxus started to move, but Natsu raised a hand at him. Telling him not to interfere. So he didn't, taking a step back instead.

The Head looked Jellal straight in the eyes. He could see clearly how lost his orbs were, how lost in pure vengeance. And at the same time, also looking miserable.

"PLEASE TELL ME!" he continued to shout, "PLEASE TELL ME NOW!"

As much as Natsu understood how he was feeling, he didn't want to let the others see his friend begging.

"PLEASE NATSU!!!" he pleaded again.

This time, he stopped him.

One of his hands gripped Jellal's shoulder, and the other one turned into a fist that landed a hard punch on his friend's gut.

"Jellal!" Erza reacted. Although she understood why Natsu did it.

It was so unpredictable that Jellal didn't get a chance to be ready for it. The hit made him loose consciousness.

His body would have dropped on the floor if the Don didn't catch him to keep him upright.

Laxus then moved towards them, carefully removing Jellal's unconscious body.

"Take him to the other room please," Natsu instructed, his composure still intact.

"Oh Wendy...poor girl," the redhead cried silently as she stood by the bed.

"What happened?" she asked, turning to face Natsu.

"We heard gunshots by the gate," it was answered by Jet.

"Six shots in total, I remember clearly," Cobra added, "We found her in one of Jellal's cars. We were too late when we went to inspect."

Erza slowly shook her head as she tried to picture out what happened.

"But why Wendy? What did she do wrong?" she still couldn't believe it. The girl was too sweet to have enemies.

"I will not discuss this until Jellal has calmed and woken up."

Was Natsu's stern answer.

.

.

"Brother"

He could hear her voice calling him.

But he couldn't see her. Everything was white. He was alone in that white empty dimension.

"Brother"

And there it was again.

"Wendy?"

"Brother"

Jellal turned to every direction he could, but all he saw was white.

"Where are you?"

Like magic, she appeared right in front of him. Standing a meter away. One second she wasn't there, and then she suddenly was.

Seeing her eyes open again, his face went at ease. Even though he knew it wasn't real.

"There you are, little princess."

She smiled.

But that smile soon faded.

And she sounded lonely when she told him,

"I'm sorry."

_

His eyes instantly shot open.

A dream.

Just like he expected.

He's been in the mafia for too long that he clearly knew how to differentiate a dead person from a live one. His sister -may her soul rest in peace- was clearly gone from this world.

He sat up from the bed, remembering what Natsu did.

Gathering his self again, he stood up and he headed out of the door. He was going to see Wendy again. But this time, he was in his right mind.

When he came back to the room where they put her, it was already empty. They'd all left. It was a good thing, he wanted to see her alone.

He didn't notice Erza at the far corner, sitting by the chair.

How he had wished he wouldn't see her body on the bed, like everything was a bad lie. But he knew that was impossible.

They were the mafia. It was an occupational hazard. Death was unavoidable. This time, it just so happened that it was his sister's time.

Stopping by the bed, he breathed deeply.

It really was her.

"Hey, genius."

He mustered up a sad smile.

Erza, whose presence was unknown, held back her tears to keep quiet.

"We just talked on the phone this morning," he continued, knowing he wouldn't get a response.

He sat on the bed, making the cushion move.

There was a moment of silence after that. The least he could do was to give her some peace.

He then slowly lifted her cold hand, enclosing it with his firm ones.

"I will get to the bottom of this. I promise," he whispered. Not even Erza heard it.

Finally deciding that it was time for them to go, Erza made her way towards him. Making him notice her.

"Natsu is waiting for you in his office. He wants to speak with you...in private," she said quietly as if a louder volume would wake Wendy up.

He turned his head to this and gave a slight nod.

.

.

NATSU'S OFFICE

He was sitting on the black chair, majestically.

Arms rested on the sides of the leather as he was face to face with the other person.

Jellal was seated as well on the other side of the desk table.

"Since you are already here, you should know," Natsu started, getting straight to the problem, "We have a traitor among us."

Realizing that he had been missing so much due to his absence, Jellal's eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

"There was a failed attempt to kill Lucas."

"What? Why?" his eyes more curious.

"The reason is still not known," Natsu answered in a disappointed manner, "It's still under investigation."

Jelllal looked down to the floor, trying to understand things.

"But," he started as he lifted his eyes to look at Natsu, "What did Wendy have to do with it?"

"This morning... she was found dead in your car. Together with an old driver."

Recognizing who he was talking about, Jellal let out a sigh of pity.

"So even Arthur..." he murmured.

Seconds passed before words were exchanged again.

"I gave her the task," Natsu spoke steadily, "To find out the contents of the thing that might have killed my heir."

This got Jellal's attention even more.

"The car she was on, it was heading to the direction of this compound."

Sensing that the Head was implying something, his brows creased.

"What are you trying to tell me?"

"I have thought about this for a while," Natsu's finger rubbed the side of his jaw, "But I believe that whoever killed her... knew that she found out something important."

"You mean..."

"The killer murdered her to shut her up for good," Natsu continued for him.

Jellal gave him a look that said he was slowly understanding everything. It was like the puzzle pieces were fitting in to form a picture.

"You mean to tell me that whoever the killer is, he killed Wendy to prevent her from reporting to you?"

Silence.

And Jellal understood it as a 'yes'.

"There is a big possibility that the murderer is the same person who targeted my son," he said straightforwardly.

So all this was connected.

"So Wendy was so close to revealing the truth," Jellal said as his gaze went down to the floor, "I never doubted that she was a genius...it's such a misfortune that her life was wasted."

Then there was that silence again.

Both waiting for the other to speak.

"I won't hate you for blaming me," Natsu spoke up, staring at Jellal the entire time, "I dragged her into this. I gave her the task...and for that, I do not blame you for holding a grudge against me."

And again, silence. This time, the air seemed to be light.

Jellal lifted his head again to face him.

"She died serving the Family, serving you. I am proud of her Loyalty, Natsu. Hating you would be...it would be like an act of betraying her."

Natsu continued to look at him.

"I do not blame you and I never will," Jellal stood up, "You are not the one who took her away from everyone. And I know that you are disheartened by her death, even though you don't show it."

"Jellal..."

"But I can't have her death be in vain, either," he continued.

This time, he looked at Natsu in the eyes with those same orbs he always had before his sister died.

"So as her brother and as your friend, I ask of you," Jellal said calmly, "Find out whoever this fucker is and kill him. Do it for the heir, do it for my sister. Kill him for the Family."

Knowing that Jellal was back on track again, the Don stood up to see in equal grounds with him.

"You don't have to ask."

Then a knock on the door got their attention.

"It's me," Zeref sounded on the other side.

"Enter," Head responded.

The door opened to reveal the older Dragneel, he was holding a cellphone with a call put on hold.

"It's Rufus," he said as he gestured to the phone, "It's urgent...it's about the Chinese family."
