11: The Threat
Lucy watched Mira.
She was still sleeping. The large window in the room was open, letting the morning breeze in.
"How is she?"
She asked, turning to Laxus.
"She's better now," he answered, his arms folded as he stood beside her.
Lucy nodded in understanding.
She turned to little Gin who was playing on the floor just beside the bed.
"If only I was there..." Laxus started,
"I would have killed the bastard on the spot."
Lucy knew he was talking about Invel.
She couldn't believe it when she found out what he did.
Her first impression on him was that of a good mannered man.
But his actions proved otherwise.
Gin stood up and went to them, grabbing on to Laxus' pants. The boy wanted to be carried.
Getting what his young mind was trying to say, his father lifted him up and held him.
"When is mommy...waking up?" his soft voice sounded so innocent.
It pained Lucy to hear this.
"I better go and check on my little boy as well," she said with a gentle smile at Laxus, getting an understanding nod from him.
.
She walked around the house.
Through the long and wide halls.
Once in a while she'd meet some of their people, earning greetings and bows from them.
Lucy would call out Lucas' name in every room she happened to pass by.
There was no sign of him.
Last time she checked, he was playing with his cousin, and Mavis was looking after them.
She decided to go check Natsu's office to see if the little troublemaker was there. She learned that he would play in his father's office while he was at the company, making a mess sometimes too.
Natsu didn't mind. He couldn't tell their son to keep out. He loved him too much and would often give him what he wanted. But Lucas wasn't a spoiled brat.
Even though Natsu never scolded him, the little boy seemed to know that he was a strict man.
There were times that he saw him get angry over things that he didn't understand yet. But Lucas knew his father was someone important.
He was still three, but his brain was definitely...exceptional. Just like his father's.
"Lucas?"
Lucy called out as she opened the door to the office.
There was no answer.
No mess, therefore no Lucas.
She was about to turn and leave, but then a crumpled white paper in the trash caught her eyes.
It looked newer compared to the other papers it was mixed with.
And it also looked like it was the only one crumpled harshly. She got curious at what could possibly get Natsu so mad that he would spare a paper no mercy.
Out of pure curiosity, she picked it up.
Slowly straightened the paper so she could read what was in there.
All the while as she comprehended what was meant by the content of it, her brown orbs were as full and round as they could be.
Her lips agape as she read the letter up to the very last word.
And her hands ...
were trembling as she shook her head in disbelief.
No.
This cannot be happening.
.
.
Time seemed to go slowly as Lucy waited for the sun to set and for the evening to come.
The whole day she waited for Natsu to return.
The whole day she was never at ease.
The whole day she was with Lucas.
Keeping an eye on him.
She struggled to act calm and casual in front of everyone. No one noticed that she was observant of what Lucas was doing the whole day.
It was when Lucas finally fell asleep that she was able to keep herself in the master's chamber and cry her heart out.
After hours of waiting, Lucy heard cars arriving at the Main House's parking lot. She knew it was Natsu and the others. They were home late again.
.
.
The door made a quiet sound as Natsu opened it.
He was loosening his necktie when he noticed Lucy sitting on the grey round couch. She didn't acknowledge his presence.
He expected her to be sound asleep already.
Natsu closed the door with a louder sound, thinking that it would get her attention.
But it didn't.
Instead, she just sat there, head downcast and not looking at him.
"Baby, is something-"
He started, but when he saw the very familiar crumpled piece of paper in her hands, he stopped.
It was the one he threw into the trash the day before.
"Where did you get that..." his voice was quiet.
It didn't sound like a question. Of course, he already knew the answer.
He inwardly cursed as to why he didn't just burn the fucking paper when he had the chance.
Lucy stood up angrily...
But the look on her face when she faced him was different.
She looked like she was crying.
He could tell it by her puffy eyes.
"What is the meaning of this?"
She struggled to keep her voice normal, but it still sounded like an obvious sob was about to break out.
She was pointing at the paper in her hand.
"Lu-"
"Why didn't you tell me?!" she shouted as she trudged towards him.
Her eyes started watering again.
When she got closer to him, she slammed her hand that had the paper in it into his firm chest.
"Why did you keep this from me?!"
Now she was crying.
She started to slap him anywhere she could hit.
This scene looked familiar, like it already happened before.
Tears flooded out of her eyes already.
"Lucy calm down," Natsu said as he got a hold of her wrists, "Baby, stop it."
She still kept trying to hit him even if he already had her.
"I won't calm down!" she cried harder,
"This is about our boy! OUR LITTLE BOY! Someone is trying to hurt him!"
Natsu circled his arms around her; stopping her from struggling.
"I won't allow this! I forbid it!"
After finding out that their child was being targeted, of course Lucy was more than just agitated.
"Nobody must hurt him!"
"I know! Lucy, I know..."
She continued to sob, wetting his shirt and tie as her fingers crumpled the back of his suit.
"Someone's threatening to kill him! Our Lucas! Our baby!"
Lucy was repeating it over and over as if it was the first time she was telling him.
"Shh... I know."
He listened as she struggled to stop her tears.
He could feel her shaking in his embrace.
He could feel her fear.
And he hated it.
He hated the way this was making her suffer.
"I'm here. I'm here,"
Natsu said calmly, wanting to make her feel safe in his arms.
He wondered how long she kept it in, how long she waited for him.
It took a long while for her to quiet down.
Her hiccups going from loud to silent...
Then Lucy slowly lifted her head up to look at him.
"Natsu..."
She started as the last drops of tears slowly flowed down her red cheeks,
"Don't let anyone take him away from me..."
He looked deep down into her pained eyes.
"...Not our Lucas."
There was fear in her brown orbs.
Fear behind those words.
"Lucy,"
Natsu's voice was as certain as the look on his face,
"Nobody will lay a finger on him.
I won't let anybody hurt you...
Or my son.
I promise."
