Confidence
Hey, all!
I have a request coming up and I'm really excited to write it!
This one, however, is based on something that has been on my mind for some time now.
It's about Scott and something he's been going through for a little while.
If you read my thoughts book, then you might know what I'm talking about.
ALSO!!!
There is a reference to a T.V show in this. First one to get it right gets a sneak peek to my newe-
Oops, getting ahead of myself.
My bad.;)
LAST THING
Avi and Kevin are kind of jerks in this sooo...Sorry?:3
Anyway...
ON WITH THE STORY!!!
Out of all the kids, Scott never had trouble with confidence.
Kevin and Avi never had to compliment him when he was having a bad day or self-conscious thoughts. Even if he did, Scott just forgot about them and picked out something he liked about himself. They didn't care much about giving him compliments anyway because he complimented himself.
Someone called him stupid? He reminded himself that he was on the principal's honor roll.
Someone called him annoying? He remembers that joke he made that made everyone laugh and landed him in detention for two weeks.
(Something about his science teacher looking like Trump after a bad tan.)
Someone called him rude? He would give someone a compliment to show that he was indeed not rude.
He never struggled with talking or thinking about himself.
Kirstie and Mitch, on the other hand, struggled more.
Kirstie let the rude remarks linger in mind, trying to think of ways to make the rude comments go away but failed. She always let the thoughts get to her.
Mitch took it to heart. Every rude comment felt like a stab in his heart and they stuck by him forever. Bullys' remarks still hurt him to this day. His heart hurts.
That is, until Kevin and Avi sat down with them and had talk with them about how to fix their confidence issues. It took time, but Kevin and Avi found out ways to increase their children's self-esteems.
Sticky notes on the bathroom mirror, compliments before they left for school, congratulating them on every achievement (no matter how big or how small), and even telling them how happy they are of them waking up and starting a new day.
It was a bit awkward at first, but Kirstie and Mitch became more confident. They began to look at themselves in a new light and their parents couldn't be more proud of them.
They weren't as confident as Scott, but they're getting there.
However, Scott changed.
A lot.
And not for the better.
~~~
Scott picked at his dinner quietly, resting his hand on his cheek as Mitch on about his school day. He was unusually stotic (to him, he is always like this) while everyone else was laughing at Mitch's story. Mitch made big hand gestures, giggling every time he brought up a funny part.
"So my foot's totally stuck in there, right? I'm freaking out, the dog's having a seizure, and I still have a piece of pie left," Mitch managed to get out, tears leaking out his eyes as he laughed hysterically. Kirstie laughed loudly while Avi and Kevin shook their heads, smiles on their faces as Mitch calmed down. "So, pretty much, I am never going to dog-sit again."
"I can't believe you did that," Kirstie replied, giggling as she tapped Scott's shoulder. Scott ignored her, poking at his green beans as he stared at nothing in particular. "Scott, could you pass the lemonade please? I'd like to have some more."
No response.
Scott just sighed and poked at his food. Kirstie and Mitch were the first ones to notice, sharing a look. What was wrong with their brother? He's usually the one to tell funny stories.
"Scott, Kirstie asked you a question. Could you do that?" Mitch asked, looking at his fathers for help. He sighed to himself as he turned back to Scott, his fathers talking about their days again. "Scott?"
Scott just 'hmphed', getting Avi's attention. Avi blinked, going back to his conversation with Kevin. Kirstie rolled her eyes and smiled at Scott, putting a hand on Scott's arm.
"Could you pass me the-"
"No."
Kirstie widened her eyes a bit, not expecting such a blunt response from Scott. Mitch dropped his jaw, not knowing what to say. Scott was never like this. Mitch cleared his throat, hoping that he could say something.
"Scott, that wasn't really nice. The lemonade is ri-"
"Shut up."
That made Kevin glare at Scott a bit before he turned back to Avi, his smile wide as Kirstie and Mitch were frowning. What was wrong with Scott? Kirstie put her hand on Scott's shoulder, jumping when Scott shrugged her hand off. She held it to her chest, trying not to cry as she thought about Scott's reaction. Scott was never this mean.
He is the sweetest Olusola kid!
"Scott, that was rude," Mitch murmured, shaking his head as Scott began to glare. "Scott, just pass the lemo-"
"No!"
"Scott, just-"
"Mitch, shut up!"
"Hey, don't talk to him like that! He's just-"
"You too, Kirstie!"
The argument between the three kids went on for about five more seconds using until Avi rolled his eyes and groaned loudly, getting his kids' attention. They all looked angry, their faces red as Kevin shook his head. Avi snorted, glaring at his children disappointedly.
"What the heck? We were having a nice dinner and then you three ruin it! What's the deal?!"
"I asked Scott to pass the lemonade and he-"
"Take your dang lemonade then."
With that said, Scott pushed the pitcher and lemonade went all over the dinner. Mitch got up from his chair quickly as Kirstie screamed, not expecting the sudden act of aggression. Avi jumped too, running into the kitchen to get cleaning supplies. Only Kevin stayed on his chair, glaring at Scott while Scott looked at the mess. Scott's arms were crossed, his face red yet Mitch couldn't help but see the tear that was about to leak out of his eye.
What's the matter with Scott?
Kevin stood up, his chair squeaking as Avi came back to the table. Scott could feel the glares from his fathers and the worried stares from his siblings. He hated this. Kevin walked up your Scott, shaking his head as he spoke loudly. The words made everyone gasp.
Those six words changed Scott's life forever.
"I am so disappointed in you."
Scott's mask fell, tears in his eyes as he tried to get the words out of his head. He sobbed quietly, covering his face as he turned and went upstairs. He hoped that no one saw his tears, but Kirstie and Mitch saw them right away. They shared a look, tears in their own eyes as they thought about their brother.
No one deserved to hear those words.
"Scott," Avi murmured, tears running down his cheeks as he tried to walk upstairs. Kevin stopped him, shaking his head as he looked at Scott a retreating back.
"Don't go to him. He doesn't need anyone in this family right now."
"Kevin, seriously?!"
"I am serious!"
While the couple was fighting, Kirstie and Mitch walked upstairs to check on Scott. When they walked to his room, they both stopped when they heard him crying. Mitch raised his hand and was about to knock when Kirstie stopped him.
"It's your room too, you know. You don't have to knock."
"I know, but we made a promise with one another that if we don't want anyone around us, then we should knock on our door. It's just to make sure that the other person comes in with the other person's permisson."
Kirstie smiled as Mitch knocked quietly, the crying coming to a sudden halt. When nothing happened, Mitch shook his head sadly. Kirstie frowned and they were about to leave when Scott opened the door, his eyes red and his face flushed as he let his siblings enter. His hair was unkempt and his side of the room was a mess. Books were on the ground, clothes overflowing in the hamper, dirty dishes on Scott's beside table...
Scott and Mitch's room is a disaster in simpler terms.
"Well, now I know what stinks," Mitch joked around, pointing at the dirty sock on his bed. When Scott didn't laugh or even smile just a bit, Mitch frowned and Kirstie followed suit, standing next to her brother for support. "Scott, what's going on? Is everything okay?"
Scott meant to laugh, but a sob came out instead. He practically collapsed on his bed, his body shaking as he sobbed. Kirstie and Mitch felt tears gather up in their eyes once more, kneeling down next to Scott so they could make him better.
"Scott, what's going on in that confident mi-"
"It's just that," Scott got out, a practically loud sob hurting his chest. Mitch bit his lip, trying his best to not sob himself. "I'm not confident. I can't look at myself in the mirror for one second without hearing people call me annoying, stupid, rude, ugly, a rat, or anything like that! People call me all these words and they hurt me so much. I try to laugh it off, but I can't. It hu-hurts. People are me-mean. What have I ever done to them?"
"Nothing, baby," Kirstie reassured, a tiny sob escaping as she brushed Scott's hair back. Mitch was crying too hard to even say anything to Scott, his heart breaking at the thought of his once confident brother becoming a shell of himself. "What else has gone on?"
"Well, Dad and Pops never loved me as much as you guys. Whenever I come to then with a problem, they always tell me to fix it myself. They don't help me with anything. Why did they even adopt me? Why couldn't my mom and dad just thrown me in a dumpster or something?"
"Don't you ever say anything like that about yourself again," Mitch got out, his voice cracking between each word. Scott and Kirstie looked at their younger brother, hearing what he had to say. "Yeah, Dad and Pops are real jerks sometimes and only care about their jobs, but they still love us and they will always love us. They do not hate you, Scott. Never in a million years."
"Then why did Dad say that he was disappointed with me, uh?! Those are the words that make me what to flip myself off whenver I see myself in the mirror. He hurts me a lot. He can't stand me."
"Dad could be mean," Kirstie agreed, getting a nod from Mitch. It was quiet was a few minutes, each sibling hearing each other sob and sniffle until Kirstie spoke up again. "You spilt lemonade on my favorite shirt."
"Kirstie, rea-"
Scott snorted, his eyes crinkling as he laughed quietly. He covered his eyes, a melodic and loud laugh erupting from his body as he shook his head. Kirstie and Mitch shared a look, gigging themselves as they heard their brother laugh.
Come to think of it, he hasn't really laughed in the past few months.
"Laughing feels good. Thanks guys," Scott smiled, putting smiles on his siblings' faces. He took a deep breath, smiling to himself before sighing loudly. "How do I become confident again?"
"Well, it'll take time, but you'll get there," Mitch promised, putting a hand on Scott's knee. Kirstie followed suit, a smile on her face as she agreed.
"And we will make that happen everyday, even when your confidence is back."
Scott smiled, not giving them much hope. If Avi and Kevin didn't care, then why would Mitch and Kirstie care? Nobody in this family cared about him except for Wyatt and Olaf.
Whenever he woke up the next day, however, he walked into the restroom and saw the sticky notes the moment he walked in. He read them, smiling to himself as he shook his head.
Your hair is awesome. It looks so soft and nice.:)
Love, Kirstie❤
You're amazing and funny and I love you. Also, I love your eyes.:)
Love, Mitch🐱
Scott stuffed the notes in his pockets, not even caring when Kevin and Avi didn't say goodbye to him when they said bye to Kirstie and Mitch. Kirstie and Mitch smiled at him and he smiled back, knowing one thing.
Maybe he is cared for in this family after all.
A/N: Well, here's a one-shot! I have been wanting to write this for a long time. Remember...Scott is a human being with feelings. Calling him dumb, stupid, ugly, a rat, or anything else like that hurts. Scott is the sweetest person alive and everyone takes advantage of that. Love him dearly please.❤ Anyways, I hope that you all enjoyed this chapter and remember that I love you all.:)
