"He wasn't ever what I expected."
Hellen said sitting on the ground beside Negan's cell. He turned his head having been sitting eight beside her on the other side of the bars. She wanted him close and only wished the bars weren't there to separate them both.
"Who?"
Negan asked causing her to realise that she was day dreaming again. Shifting a little in her spot she kept her eyes on her kneecaps.
"Rick. I remember when we were sitting on the porch. You were holding Judith and Carl was -- he was sitting beside you in the other rocker. Rick came up and he just... wasn't what I was expecting."
"Rick the prick."
Negan snorted a bit before he grinned and laid his head back against the wall. The silence sank into the room again as Hellen broke it by talking.
"He was worried about his daughter, but when Carl vouched for me, I thought Rick was going to kneel over and die right then and there."
"He didn't think Carl would find anyone good from our group."
Hellen nodded. Negan was right the way Rick just watched her as if trying to figure out if her persona was just a front. Now she knew that he knew it wasn't.
"We're lucky. We're so very, very lucky."
"You call this lucky?"
Finally she turned and looked at Negan. Her bloody cries forever haunting her mind as she begged for Rick to spare Negan on that hillside.
"I'm selfish I know -- "
"You're not. You're the least selfish human I've ever met. You're a fucking Saint."
"I know you've given up."
She quickly mentioned having Negan fall silent. His eyes that was once looking at her now turned away. She frowned, her bottom lip starting to quiver.
"You can't give up hope. I'll get you out. I swear I won't stop till you're free."
"They'll never let me out."
He hissed. She shook her head reaching her fingers between the bars and grabbing his scrubs they had him dressed in while locked up. This caused him to look at her again.
"I've never made you a promise I've not been able to keep. I won't stop. I won't."
Negan's case softened as he leaned toward the bars. Hellen leaned in and their lips met for a split second before the door came flying open. It startled Hellen causing her to jump back from Negan. Both of them looking forward and seeing the Widow standing there holding a crowbar.
"Leave."
She ordered for Hellen. Hellen just looked at her wide eyed as she shuffled to her feet.
"Like hell I'm gonna do that!"
Hellen snapped now standing. Maggie gritted her teeth as she yelled.
"Leave!"
"Fuck you!"
Maggie narrowed her eyes glaring daggers toward Hellen.
"Fine... I'll start with you."
Her eyes widened as Hellen felt cornered. There stood Maggie before her and nothing but a wall behind her, beside her, and a cell wall on the other.
"Now wait just a God damn minute! She hasn't done anything!"
Negan snapped, but Maggie ignored him as she walked to stand before Hellen. Holding her breath, Hellen's flight or fight senses came into play.
"Revenge is the path most taken, but the least fruitful."
Hellen said doing what she always did best which was talk herself out of situations.
"My husband is dead because of him! Don't you dare start spewing that crap!"
"Widow, will this really help? It won't bring your husband back and how are you going to leave here with a peaceful mind knowing we're dead but it doesn't help?"
The bar was lifted by her hand.
"Shit! Stop! It's me! You want me take me!"
Negan shouted catching Maggie's attention. She paused her swing, her chest heaving heavily due to how angry she had grown. Looking at Negan, Maggie lowered her arm and removed some keys she had in her hand.
Fear struck Hellen and she charged Maggie without thinking. That wasn't a smart move because Maggie tossed her arm around and the crowbar hit Hellen across the side of her midsection causing her to cry out and be flung into the wall.
"No!"
Negan cried, his voice still horse from where his throat had been sliced open. He watched helplessly as Hellen laid there against the wall, her hands on her side as tears slipped past her closed eyes.
"Please just stop. It's me you want. Kill me and leave her be."
He pleaded. Maggie was furious. The keys sliding around in between her fingers as she approached Negan's lock.
But she passed before pulling back.
"No. You took everything away from me. Now I'm gonna do the same to you."
Maggie slipped the keys into her pocket before she turned around and faced Hellen. The crow bar tightly wrapped in her hands. The younger woman struggled to sit up against the wall and looked up at Maggie.
"I always... knew it would be the living that killed me."
She said in a hushed tone. Negan's hands wrapped around the bars as his face pressed against them.
"No. No. No. No! It's suppose to be me! Me! I'm the big bad guy here! Not her! She's never hurt anybody! She was defenceless! I'm the one! It's suppose to be me! Kill me! Please kill me!"
"Who's not to say I won't kill you both!"
Maggie shouted turning around to face Negan. The man, as Hellen seen and heard, was actually crying. She had never seem Negan cry before now.
"Because you can't -- she can't die please. She's the only thing good left in this world."
"My husband was also good and you took him!"
"I know -- I know and I'm sorry that it was him. But I'm begging you, you can't kill her. She's been nothing but good her whole life. She's seen the best in people including me. She doesn't see the bad even when it's clearly there. If you kill her you kill the chance of a society that could become like before all this. Something that Carl wanted -- "
"Enough!"
Maggie said lifting the crowbar and swinging it down just above Hellen's head to hit the wall right above her. The girl squealed and fell sideways to the ground to get away from the blow. Her hands covered her head as she laid there curled up against the concerte floor.
She waited for another blow that might actually hit her this time, but nothing came. Instead Hellen opened her eyes and seen Maggie watching her from above. She didn't know if this was what it took for Negan's words to register what he meant, but Maggie seemed to lose all luster of death behind her eyes and instead they were replaced with angry saddened tears.
"Damn you Negan. Damn you both."
Maggie muttered under her breath.
"I'm going to let her live for the simple fact of knowing that you'll never be free, Negan. I seen how you two were when I came in here. And knowing that she's here, but never having her; that's worse than killing her or you."
Maggie said loosening her hold not her crowbar. She made her exit fast. The door slamming behind her as she left. A cry slipped through Hellen's lips as she tightened her hold on her side.
"Baby girl -- "
"I was so scared she was gonna kill you!"
She cried against the cold floor. Her hand coming up and covering her face. She cried harder then than she had cried in a long time.
And Negan couldn't even hold her.
