The sun shone brightly. What would be lifeless lilies and oak trees, were bustling with energy and fragrance. The castle wasn't abandoned anymore. Sounds of men, women, and children came out from its premises, and there were occasional voices of people shouting, 'Hail Queen Marvella.' 'Hail the Queen of Etis.' A beautiful lady flew past me, somersaulting in the air, flapping her big, feathery brown wings. I heard another couple saying that it was always good to walk on land, but they loved the water much better.
My skin had turned translucent. I did not freak out, it wasn't a horror movie for sure. I drifted inside. Where there was the empty hall back when I first saw it, was now filled with people. They sat in small log-like benches on either side. The torches lit furiously and the chandelier was giving out a yellowish light. The sunlight helped in too, and the three sources created a beautiful gradient. On the most beautiful throne, I had ever seen in my life sat the most beautiful woman I ever laid my eyes on, The Fallen Queen.
She had sharp Amber eyes and long, honey-brown wavy hair. Her skin was bronze and amberish and her lips were painted the boldest red. She wore a heavy, layered gown, dark orange which had off shoulders and met at her cleavage. She had such an aura around her, that I felt something I never felt before; like I knew and experienced this feeling ever since my existence. But I never did. Ever.
'Marvella, this man wants compensation for his failed paddy crops. He says it was due to the Season Sisters' fault, the rain came much later, which caused this havoc. How can he raise a question on them? He should be executed.' A man with sharp, dark green eyes said. He was clean shaved and his hair was properly set. He was wearing a white and golden plated robe, with a belt that seemed like it was carved out of diamonds.
'He indeed should not blame the Season Sisters.' Marvella or the Fallen Queen declared. 'Execute him.'
Very bad people. The man gave a smile. Upon closer look, I found out he had legs which were that of birds. Ew.
But the farmer, who like in any other story was supposed to shiver in fear and plead for his life, didn't. Marvella then stood up and swayed her hand to form a circle of brownish smoke. It left the hall. The man, who had suggested the execution said with wide eyes, 'What are you doing, Marvella? Execute him.'
She just ignored him. He was infuriated. I liked this woman's attitude.
'EXECUTE HIM MARVELLA! I SAID EXECUTE HIM!' He shrieked at the top of his voice.
'Don't teach me what to do Zachariah.' The Fallen Queen snapped in a sharp and sturdy tone. And then she made some movements with her hand and Zachariah instantly flew up in the air, chocked. 'I'm the Queen, remember? This isn't your Air realm, and you aren't the director here. Also, you are just a choice, I'm the power here. And I don't like to be told what to do. Just because we're getting married doesn't mean you have the right to say anything you want, impose your will over me. Don't take advantage of my love.'
Somehow, I instantly fell in love with how she was. Fierce. Bold. A little cruel.
'Marvella,' Zachariah started, chocking harder. 'You know I love you right? But the Season Sisters are my responsibility. My anger gets the most of me, you know right?'
She headed towards him and they kissed. 'Never do that again. You seem to forget.' The room fell quiet. Five Women came walking right in through the big doors. Marvella took her throne and addressed them.
They were the Season Sisters. The one in the extreme left was termed Summer. She wore a thin, yellow long dress. She had a wheatish complexion and she wore pink glossy lipstick. She gave out the smell of ripe mangoes and Sweet Allysum flowers. She had a beautiful smile on, but her hands fumed with heat, the heat she radiated and everyone seemed to feel for a fraction of second. Her eyes were goldish. The one next to her was marked, Winter. She wore a gown with a thick and big fur collar and her dress was made of light and dark bluish wool. She had skin which seemed like it was made of ice and purple painted lips. Her eyes were ocean blue, and she had such a stare oh god.
Then there was Monsoon. Her hair was wavy and wet. She wore an emerald dress with white silk layers to it. Her skin seemed glossed up like it does after we take a shower. Her eyes were stormy grey. Next was Autumn. She wore a brown, skin-tight dress which seemed like it was made of fallen leaves and her hair was curly and short. Her lips were painted brown. The person on the extreme right was spring. She wore a rainbow-colored dress and her hair was tied into a long ponytail, her pupils pink. She smiled vibrantly.
Looking and staring at those five seasons coming alive in front of me, I was reminded of Aspen and Mat. I wonder how everyone was, and how long was I here. I don't know where.
'Rene, tell me, why did you delay the rain? Was there a problem?' The Fallen Queen asked.
'Yes certainly, there must be. Rene--
'Rene, tell me.' Marvella ignored Zachariah's attempt to intervene.
'No, dear queen. It slipped my mind, I went for a long nap.' She admitted.
'Yes, she did.' Summer and Spring replied in unison. 'Please forgive her.'
'We're sorry on her behalf.' Autumn spoke with a deep voice.
'We can compensate. Our duty was to check on each other, we failed. Please forgive us.' Winter added.
'You see, Zachariah? They respect the truth. And I shall punish those who are wrong and serve those who are not faulty. This is my final decision which I shall present. The farmer shall get compensation. He is free of any charges whatsoever. Rene will help him manually, without powers to produce another crop or maybe paddy. The other sisters shall assist in any way, without failure.'
And then she flew off with her majestic, beautiful, brownish-red wings.
I kind of drifted cum flew or I don't know what into the living room now. Yes, the one with big windows with velvet curtains. There were fit men and women in black gowns who did different chores there. The Fallen Queen sat on one of the sofas, as she went through some papers. Zachariah sat beside her. 'I think I need a pen to write with.' She said as she stood up to go get herself one. The servants asked her to wait, but she insisted on going on her own.
'I'll bring it dear.' Zachariah said. He went inside and I went behind him.
'Why Zachariah, you do this? Don't you see it? Everyone thinks you are her puppy.' A woman with red eyes conversed with Zachariah as he fetched a pen in the study.
'Haha. I don't care about what people think, I love her. Too much. She's mine and only mine, forever. She can't even stray near anyone else. Let's get married and then I'll take the throne and she will be my Queen. Nice obedient, loving queen.' He snickered. I felt like it was some sort of historical romance drama and I was watching it in virtual reality.
'She'll never give you the throne.' The woman laughed. Zachariah ignored her. I drifted to the Fallen Queen's bedroom. There she was, with the evil Zachariah.
'I shall visit the cityscape and return in two weeks. You shall take care of the place when I'm gone.' She told Zachariah as she kissed him. Something was off about the relationship.
As the Fallen Queen flew for the city, I flew with her too. I realized she wasn't talking about the current Enchanted Island, because she flew over the sea, crossing the island. It was after some time I noticed another island, it was flat, like a slab of glass and raised higher. She landed on the rocky plain and walked in with all her might and the sway of her gown with one hand on one side.
As we walked, the canopies seemed to get bigger and bigger. Then we reached a spot where there was about a five feet gap, where the ocean water filled in, dividing the land into two. It also somehow overflowed at that end, so the banks were wet and the grass looked much juicier.
As Marvella looked around with her sharp eyes, analyzing and praising the beauty of the lush green canopies and the emerald salty water of the Ocean, in a fraction of a second, in the half blink of my eye, she caught an arrow mid-air which approached her from her back. She was furious. Her eyes glowed with literal, small fires in her pupils.
'Who dares to do that, don't you know who I am?' She said dangerously. Her hands were erupting with fire, blazing orange fire, which seemed like they held the power to burn the entire land into ashes in seconds.
That is when I remembered how I had set a curtain on fire one day and how one day I lit a matchstick weakly. I was nothing compared to this woman. Sad life.
'No, who are you? And I dare to do that because you have trespassed into my motherland, there has been no information about a visit of a flying woman here.' A deep and very sexy voice replied. (I'm sorry Fallen Queen, it was very very ----)
'I'm Marvella, bloody queen of Etis!' She screamed hysterically. 'How dare you say that? I rule this place!'
'But you don't stay here, and I do. Not the official warrior here, but I intend to do it someday.' The voice got closer. A lean guy from behind the trees appeared. He had the messiest sort of hair, which was so much my types. (oh no sorry. Plus, I know what will happen.) Now the Fallen Queen just stared at him and he stared back. 'What?'
'You dare to say what? You've never heard about me? I've ruled this place since I was thirteen, everyone knows about me and no one dares to rai--
'See, it was just me protecting my land. I'm doing nothing wrong, my queen, so I will not react negatively to this. Right?'
Okay, guy, you'll die. Plus, the Fallen Queen was someone I was Falling in Love with.
She just nodded. 'Courage. No one has ever done that. I owe you a chance. I respect bravery and truth over everything. Remember.'
And then what? Over the next two weeks, the Fallen Queen disguised as a normal woman and she roamed about the entire place with him. From eateries to monuments, they went everywhere. Also, it was a date disguised as a survey. At every point, Veer, the dashing sexy (read: warriorlike) guy, challenged Marvella at every point. She seemed to have the same aura, and Veer would abide by it, but it wasn't sugarcoated agreement. He always put his best foot forward to argue with her, from conditions of the people to the choice of food, and won multiple times, with pretty much legit accuracy.
'I'm leaving tonight, it was a pleasure meeting you Veer. Thank you for being around and for giving me a place to stay.' The Fallen Queen said softly. 'I'm getting married next full moon. You shall come with your family, you're going to be in the official guest list.'
'Marvella.' He spoke slowly. 'Queen, I know deep down you're not happy with the marriage. I've drawn the conclusion from whatever you have talked with me in the last fourteen days. Please, don't do anything which goes against your values.'
She was shocked. 'I respect you Veer, but you have no right. I love Zachariah with all my might.'
'That's amazing, but think, and take every decision carefully. Remember the mind deceives, even the heart, what doesn't, is your values. And you abiding by it. And values, aren't a certain set of them, remember, they are what you believe is the best for you.'
I expected Marvella to burst out, she was about to, but she stopped midway. 'You shall grow and take it forward, mark my words.' She commanded. And then she flew away, while Veer looked up to her until she disappeared into the blue sky.
And the full moon came, when everyone gathered in the Castle of the Fallen Queen, to celebrate the great marriage. There were tables and tables of food laid out and the violin played, women and men in their finest of clothes roamed about.
'Marvella is officially my Queen now!' Zachariah announced as he rose a toast to everyone. Everyone sort of fell silent. A small boy, maybe aged ten, replied, 'She is the Queen of Etis, not yours, you aren't our king.'
And bam, Zachariah turned him into stone and he shattered into pieces. 'She is my Queen, I am her King, isn't it Marvella? Isn't it mine now?' There was havoc all around. The child's parents fell on their feet crying.
'Zachariah!' The Fallen Queen shouted. 'How dare you?'
'The throne is mine, Hail Zachariah, the king of Etis!' he announced. Now, people really got uncomfortable. Even the people from the air realm tried to approach him. The woman he was talking with the other day? She turned into a serpent and killed a fairy.
'I shall never give away my throne.' Marvella's pupils raged with a fire unlike before. 'This is what I get in return for my love? Betrayal? I hate people who do that, you know that nicely.' She set Zachariah on fire, he resisted with whatever stone thing he did. 'I am the Queen and I have worked hard to grow my Etis. Why shall I give it to you? It is mine.'
'It's mine now. You're mine now, don't you know? A broken marriage means a destroyed life for women? Be my right hand now, we'll live happily ever after.' He said, coming close to her slowly. 'You know I love you very much, we'll do this together.' I could see love though, but more than that, I saw obsession. 'You give me your power, I'll give you my love.'
'Things shall change.' Marvella fumed and took deep breaths. She looked at the entire population of Etis. 'I shall be the Fallen Queen, and I shall be there always. Grow and go forward.'
And then she burst into a pile of white dust. She was gone.
There was chaos amongst the people, everyone shouted and wailed. Some tried calling their queen out. No one knew what happened. As Zachariah laughed with all his might and the woman bit random people as a huge snake, the fact that the most powerful and beautiful queen of all times had just disappeared, hung in the very air of Etis.
What would happen to Etis now? How did it reach the position as it is today? Why did she leave so suddenly, leaving everything behind? Will Zachariah and that red-eyed woman rule this place forever?
Tears streamed down my cheeks as everyone present there felt helpless, directionless, including me, for some reason, the queen who led the flock had just left, and it pained.
