𝐔𝐏𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐄, 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐘𝐎𝐑𝐊

A hairbrush runs delicately through long, wavy dark hair, detangling any of the snarls and clustered knots in preparation for a braid.

Fingers comb through soft and silkiness that naturally-colored locks now pertain, and subconsciously, Natasha Romanoff continues doing this while splitting into two sections.

She parts down the middle evenly with a comb and begins Dutch braiding one section of the very long hair belonging to Dani Rockland.

Dani's facial expression represents the utmost content upon feeling her mother figure's gentle, but stern touch travel with each crossover of hair.

The room is quiet and peaceful, allowing the atmosphere to be like so almost as always... right before the fight. Before a time heist.

Light green irises remain closed in the tranquility of the environment until they are forcefully opened by the low familiar voice belonging to Natasha, that fills a comfortable silence.

"That was some first date, huh?"

A bit of flush comes to Danielle's cheeks as she reacts to being asked a question that she only carried a bit of anxiety from, still.

Though the eighteen-year-old is able to respond normally, as it is a topic she very well feels she can confide in Natasha with... Also knows for herself, the truth.

She insists in a quiet, light tone, "It was really nice."

Dani swallows thickly after that, almost as if her throat is dry.

The redhead hums in reply.

Wanting to know more, in the least assertive way―though also very blunt and forward, Natasha poses another question, one that rolls right off her tongue, "Did you... well, did you give him a kiss?"

Dani's leg twitches nervously from sitting down on the vanity chair of her bedroom, and it does not go unnoticed. She gulps again as her esophagus craves water and does a quick internal re-run of her infamous night out with Dante... that included some walking, and talking, though definitely no kissing. Were they supposed to? Was she supposed to? Well, she'd already rejected him twice.

That and her own thought process leads Dani to give the most incredulous look through the mirror back at the Black Widow, causing Natasha's lips to then lift into a smile, "Based on that face... I'm gonna go with no."

"I..." Dani tries to speak.

"Sweets."

Her shoulders sag in ultimate defeat at the absence of the particular sign of affection, more than needed, but Natasha just laughs. The woman runs her hands up and down the girl's rigid arms right before going back to doing her hair, continuing to touch her in some form that radiated assurance.

That then convinces the child, to continue. To admit.

"It's like... sometimes, I still have trouble opening up, you know? Letting..." Dani sighs heavily as her posture drops more, mumbling out the last part somewhat shamefully, "letting people in."

Her trust issues are ever-present as, affirmatively, they exist and are valid. They haven't gone away. But right now she needs people in her corner. Everyone does.

Natasha reassures her by getting rid of the shame, "That's all right. You've been through a lot."

"But all that pain, and suffering..." she builds, continuing, "it's part of you, even if you don't want it to be."

Dani folds her lip while the woman imparts some more wisdom that she has gathered in her own journey of personal growth, and discovery, what other people have told her, "Because it's how you overcome that pain in the end, that makes you strong."

"Pain makes you stronger." The redhead emphasizes.

Dani doesn't hold back in articulating,  "Also more guarded."

She isn't wrong, and Natasha doesn't discourage that, instead adds wholeheartedly, "No matter what, though... your heart's always been in the right place, and that's what makes you so extraordinary."

Sudden compliments and praise for the teenager evokes Dani to shake her unfinished, braided head, fighting off a blush once again, "Stop."

"Just let me be mushy for once, okay?" the woman bumps her arm, amusement clear as day on her face, and raises her brows perceptively, "Take care with it, it might never happen again."

Dani contests, "So unlike you."

"Only for me."

The older woman nods in agreement as the room is temporarily submerged by a laugh, courtesy of the eighteen-year-old. The two then mimic one another's soft smiles, or rather... play off of them, and Natasha soon turns earnest. Very serious.

She can barely hide the quiver in her voice but does, insisting with extreme importance, "Always keep that heart, Dani."

"I know you will."

"And... it's for that reason why I'm so proud of you." Dani looks up at Natasha through the mirror vanity with big, faithful eyes.

The same admiring and endearing ones the girl had consistently viewed the ex-assassin with.

She never saw her any other way.

Her hope and bravery, are qualities Dani herself wants to obtain one day, though she is aware of their differences. The difference between them, as people.

Nonetheless, it does not take away from the traits Danielle had greatly inherited from Natasha, including her kindness and compassion. Their bond from the start was a role-model type Esque relationship, that certainly turned into something more. So much more.

"You're gonna go so far, Kiddo," Nat's words ring true in how firmly she stands behind them, "and I can't wait to watch."

Dani's tone reeks of the same honor, and she bows her head somewhat in acknowledgment, "I couldn't have made it without you."

Natasha turns her red and still blonde-streaked head to the side while breathing out a chuckle that is flexed as denial, "You don't give yourself enough credit."

"Neither do you."

Darker green eyes belonging to Natasha, sharpen at the girl's statement.

Dani turns around and looks directly into them, rectifying as her whole body engages in this next bout of talk, dignified, "You're all I ever wanted to be."

"You were... you were someone who had nothing but then became something, that's all I tried to do."

"I found... a purpose," she confirms, smiling fondly at the last part, "thanks to being able to look up to someone like you."

The Black Widow rests a hand against the chair while staying quiet for a few seconds, briefly speechless in the utter disbelief and possibility... that she could mean so much to someone else. To Dani, to Steve... to others.

Natasha immediately feels the need to give some of that back, "You've helped me a lot too, you know. My life's better because of you."

"You... gave me something I'd never thought I'd be able to have." She adds quickly.

And it is a direct reference to their connection, though unspoken... one a mother and daughter share. Surrogacy in this case did not matter either, because in the end, based on everything they have been through... Danielle Rockland was the daughter Natasha Romanoff never got the chance to actually have.

Natasha was the mother of the once little and orphaned girl, so desperately needed and deserved.

They both deserved each other in times where fate was not so kind, and whether or not tragedy is in their future, at least the essential had been said and feelings brought to the surface. Honored... even if it was rare for the Black Widow to resort to such warm tendencies.

The young woman, more accustomed to it, re-claims, "Me too."

Dani is so thankful to have her. To have Natasha having watched her this far in her journey and continue to, to know that she willingly will continue to. She admires her.

No words can express their emotional tether to one another further, so that is when the child throws herself into the woman's arms.

Dani jumps out of the vanity chair and holds on tight.

"I love you, Natty."

The Black Widow, inherently, is a bit taken aback by the abrupt gesture, but most defiantly returns it as she buries her face into the eighteen year old's black shirt, intaking the soft smell of clean detergent and gentle-scented soap that reminded her so much of Dani. Someone pure, good, fresh.

Natasha leans forward with her forehead pressed onto Danielle's, "I love you more, Sweetie."

They eventually break apart and she makes the finishing touches on the girl's unruly elongated hair that now sits in two tight braids, though not tight enough to the point where she would faint, and the redhead is back to half-teasing, half-trying to get through to her.

"Now... this boy. Do you love him?"

Skin running cold on the surface of Dani's neck, with little to no hesitance, she finally admits solely to Natasha, openly, her feelings towards Dante, "I... I think I do."

Dani doesn't ever think she loves anyone, her emotions entirely depend on one side. One remaining factor.

The girl's heart is far too famished with finding faith in others to simply stay in the grey area.

Natasha is aware of this, her deeply rooted emotions, and knows that if there were only two options here, Dani tips straight to the first one. Yes or no. Yes.

She is in love with Experiment #123.

"What should I do?"

To the woman's own astonishment, though not lack of shock, the younger woman seeks out her opinion and, or advice on the current matter... what do you if you're in love with someone? Danielle does not need much help in that department, she just loves, freely and with no restraint, intensely.

Natasha longs for her heart sometimes.

Regardless, upon noticing her bitten-down lip, eyes ablaze again in that same anxious state of waiting for a response, an answer to a question that most girls asked their mother or father, or uncle, the Black Widow comes up with a reply that is simple. Yet exquisite.

"Tell him. Or... rather show him, instead. If you're up for it."

Dani has flushed red all over again.

Natasha gradually wears a grin and runs a hand over Dani's braided head, suppressing a chuckle that most unquestionably will not be her last considering what is about to go down.

Though first and foremost, the time has come for the Avengers to fight back. To take back their universe and world.

They are about to do that right now.

Together, as said.

Whatever... it takes.

❀❀❀

Morning glow breaks into the large windows of the Avengers Facility, and that is the queue for the remaining Avengers to make their way towards the Quantum Tunnel for traveling. Traveling back in time. Dressed head-to-toe in their respective and normal gear and worn over are identical Quantum Realm suits. A time-space GPS is also attached to every wrist of each enhanced individual. Or raccoon.

They walk up.

Steve Rogers takes the lead, red, white, and blue shield strapped onto his left arm in the dutifulness that he had it back. His title, and the honor of being 'Captain America'. The leader of the Avengers.

Next to him is Dani Rockland, his daughter, though a notoriously valued and key player on this team of Earth's Mightiest Heroes, despite being the youngest.

Her abilities speak over her years on this planet compared to others. The pieces of the Tesseract. Pieces of an Infinity Stone. All fully charged up and inside her, nearly mastered and controllable. Containable... She has come a long way.

So has everyone. Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, wears a look of sheer determination on her face as her hair is pulled back into a side braid―gaze tipping up and looking straight forwards at Dani's double-ones that she did earlier. When they had a conversation.

Tony Stark is adjacent to her with the same look of grit, Iron Man has his priorities set in stone, though has things he needs to bring back to this world. Has people to motivate him. A boy. Peter.

Scott Lang walks in his own row alongside Nebula, and behind him are the Hulk and Clint Barton, Bruce and Hawkeye staring straight ahead as well. Ready for battle.

Thor next to Bruce carries up the rear, looking a little different than before but the serene expression painted onto his face is genuine at heart, for after all the mistakes he has made, he is prepared to finally do something good. Something right... That he has control of.

Rhodey with his much larger War Machine suit has his face revealed on top of his own Quantum Tunnel suit, and that concludes the heroes about to embark on this journey.

A journey to avenge the fallen, and avenge the rest.

They have three teams.

Three teams and one-shot through the points and time in history, and as referenced before, belong to points and time in their history. The Avengers and Guardians.

Going to 2012, to the Battle of New York, where three Infinity Stones are located, will be Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-Man, and the Hulk. A run-in with their past selves is possible, and they are aware of that. They will be careful.

Going to 2013, to Asgard, will be Thor and Rocket. The Aether/the Reality Stone―not actually a stone, by the way, is currently inside a woman named Jane Foster. Thor's ex-girlfriend. Yeah...  it is a good thing the best tactical-minded Raccoon in the Galaxy will be accompanying him.

In 2014, there are two objectives to retrieve two stones. One on the planet Morag, Nebula, and Rhodey will take the Power Stone from a dancing Peter Quill... leaving the other and final stone, the Soul Stone, in a place called Vormir.

Steve was hesitant about allowing Danielle to join the time heist, period, though soon enough fathomed that it wasn't really his decision anymore when it came to her wellbeing. He doesn't have a say.

Dani is her own person now, not only in growing age but in spirit and determination, and that alone drives a burning sensation to go on this mission more than ever. To save people. To fix everything. To bring her uncle, aunt, and sister figures back from the dead.

Danielle Rockland is a force to be reckoned with... and it's her job to bring the other forces back.

So, with little to―actually, no―consideration, the girl agrees to be tasked with following her Uncle Clint and figure―but real―mother, Natasha, to Vormir. To get the next Stone.

She will be careful. She will protect them.

Almost in single file, they are making their way up the ramp, smarter Hulk stopping at the computer hooked up to the tunnel when another presence who is not going on the time heist, convinces Dani to come back.

The eighteen year old's head shoots up like a bullet and, similarly, she races down the steps in a very important manner.

She is strident as she calls out to her Avenging family who, most of, if not all are circled up and ready to go, "Uh, just hold on a second! Just one!"

The face of Experiment #123 softens when #124 makes her way over to him, dressed in her own white and red Tunnel suit, and him wearing the same striped shirt he had worn earlier.

Dani's muscles lift beside her jaw as she inhales thoroughly when locking eyes with Dante.

"Off to save the world now?"

"Yeah." She breathes, her heart pumping more blood than usual but she remains her normal skin color for the moment as she smiles.

Dante does too before it falters, lip pulling down.

Dani's expression nearly twists at that, limelight following his as they direct down to their hands, and instantly the girl grabs onto one of his.

He speaks in a low tone that is strained as he swallows, "Well, be careful, you know... the others would kill me if I didn't say that."

"I bet they would." Dani links the boy's chocolate irises back onto her sea-green ones with the slight giggle latched onto her last phrase, noting his struggle in showing emotions at times to his downplayed version of extreme concern for her.

Except it is not downplayed, she can tell.

Dante once meeting her gaze helplessly begins to smile, and so does Dani, again, a sweet silence overcoming them. Not really knowing what else could be said.

Dani finds the words, always, though before that quickly draws forward and wraps an arm over the boy's neck, and pulls him close, leaning into his chest.

Dante smells like spiced cinnamon pumpkin as he tightly returns the embrace, rather platonic, and he whispers in the girl's ear while they are this close―lips brushing atop her head, "Promise me you'll be okay, Dan?"

She hears the uncanny fear, fear of losing her, but it is then that, thankfully, anxiety is only natural, as even with his emotional connection towards her Dante is aware of Dani's intense strength. As the Success of the FORCE Headquarters, no doubt.

Her mental strength was another battle for now, but there was no denying that she was more than capable of protecting herself and others. Not to mention the paternal figures that are extremely doting and caring for her. Dante experiences comfort at that.

They release from one another a mere second later, and Dani, after witnessing his quiet question replies with the same, short, untelling response―one that was cheeky, just like her, "I'll..."

"-See you when I see you."

The boy can't help but laugh at that, features lighting up, and they make Dani's face curl in the pleased affirmation that she had gotten to see one last smile on his face, for whatever was next.

But, surprisingly―unsurprisingly―following, there seem to be a few more seconds of lingering. An empty few that required something to fill it, based on their close bond, that had developed and surely grown just over the last couple of days spent alone together. Not to bring up the whole year and a half.

But, once again, fabled at this point, eighteen-year-old Dani stands both still and stiff, unsure of what to do, or... rather nervous about the impending next step needing to be taken.

So instead she takes it by turning to the left and walking off, back up the ramp to take off on an especially iconic time heist. Leaving...

Dante scraped his tongue against all of his teeth and forms an expression of much hearty disbelief as he places his hands on his hips. That... girl.

"Hey, Dani?"

She turns around at the use of her name, braided head bobbing a bit and at this point, her own foot is on the beginning of the ramp. Her face is a bit confused but responsive, completely unprepared for what he is about to do.

Dante has stopped looking at the ceiling, removed his hands from their original position and he is now walking forwards. Walking towards her.

His movement is fast, but swift in eventually getting to Dani and stopping right in front of her.

In one motion he reaches for her waist and tugs her close, and then places his warm lips over hers.

Granting the eighteen-year-old, her very first kiss.

"You've got to be kidding me." Steve Rogers can't stop himself from muttering.

Natasha Romanoff sends a hand into his left shoulder, scolding but also cautioning him from intervening and the others do the same in undeniably minding their own businesses. Some take interest in the ceiling patterns either authentically... or are in the middle of giving the biggest eye roll in the history of eye rolls.

As for Dani, she gasps, sound having nearly jumped out of her throat right as she makes contact and her shoulders bunched up. Dante's actions take her incredibly off guard, so much so that her hand flinches up and touches his arm as he pushes her body back a bit, the forcefulness of the kiss is also a consideration, but he's got her.

Hook line and sinker, Dante and Dani finally kissed. Lord and all the upper spirits know the girl avoided it many times.

Mostly, because of her own sacred philosophies, but also trust and childhood trauma when it comes to experiencing love was a key factor in Dani's hesitance. She doesn't need to feel that way any longer.

Pulling away with a subtly loud 'smack', the girl's eyes are bulging out of her sockets as the tip of her ears tint red. No, her whole face is caked like a tomato. God, that was embarrassing, her first kiss... and in front of EVERYONE? Gosh, Dante was great, but did he have to do it in front of all the Avengers? Better yet her DAD? Dani has a discomfited look on for a few seconds after that.

She realizes upon reading Dante's smirking expression that he really had no choice, especially in his brief explanation, "Wasn't gonna let you leave without your first kiss, now was I?"

Dani turns even redder if that was possible, but her reaction of pure awe and giddiness is candid during the entire ordeal.

A signaling cough that comes from Tony reminds her that she is not in a Disney Princess movie, she is about to go back in time to save the world. Which one sounds more realistic?

"Uh, bye!" Her voice chirps and is rapid as she spins around and heads up the ramp of the Avengers Facility, and Dante from behind her is cherished as he steps back in order to see her off.

Running the rest of the way, the girl's ears noticeably still burn a bright red as she rotates her body to be in between her two Co-Parents, both of which glance at her with gaping, open mouths.

Dani scrunches inward at the amount of unwanted attention.

"That was your first kiss?" A bump to one of her rigid arms causes her to recoil more, however, Dani remains bossy to Natasha.

"Stop it! That isn't the primary focus right now."

The Captain's deep, and solemn voice then cuts in, "Neither is what you just did."

Sweat trickles down Dani's back as she nervously turns to meet the gaze of her father, whose brow initially is firm, but then releases... Relaxes.

"We'll talk later." He adds in a tone originally meant to be strict but is entirely gentle in reality.

Steve is not as overprotective at this stage then when she was younger, he knows Dani will make the right decisions. For herself, and nobody else. That's what she should do. That's who she is. Independent and strong.

All are settled and lined up in their respective positions in a circle as a team, and that's when it feels most appropriate for Captain America to begin one of his righteous speeches. Righteous, but heartfelt and motivating. Inspiring.

Danielle watches her father with a daunting expression.

"Five years ago, we lost." He begins, "All of us. We lost friends... We lost family... We lost a part of ourselves."

"Today, we have a chance to take it all back."

"You know your teams, you know your missions," Captain America references the immense teamwork about to be done, all in tune with their very own purposes, "Get the stones, get them back."

He emphasizes serenity because it is, "One round trip each. No mistakes... No do-overs."

Natasha and Clint both nod at the sincere statement, and Dani suddenly feels weight in her right hand and resists the urge to not become a pile of tears. Even through the heart, she is a sensitive kid... and knows just how big of an event this is. One she is part of, and one she will not be by Steve's side for. She grabs onto his hand and holds onto it tightly.

The blonde rubs his hand over his daughter's while relaying, "Most of us are going somewhere we know, that doesn't mean we should know what to expect."

"Be careful. Look out for each other."

Dani momentarily locks eyes with Clint and he acknowledges her with a soft look.

"This is the fight of our lives." Steve pertains, then gives a glance towards Tony, "And we're going to win."

The Ironed Man nods at his friend with much optimism and confidence.

Captain America finishes after inhaling, solidifying, "Whatever it takes."

"Good luck."

Rocket can't hold back his amazement at the speech, "He's pretty good at that."

"Right?" Neither can Ant-Man.

"All right," Tony calls over the larger version of Bruce, encouraging, "You heard the man."

"Stroke those keys, Jolly Green."

Hulk reports, "Tracker's engaged," and in the hand of a mo-hawked Clint Barton is a shrunken down version of the Guardian's ship, the Raccoon having his arms crossed, "You promise to bring that back in one piece, right?"

"Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. - I'll do my best." Hawkeye chortles, forcing one last smile that intertwines with his niece's.

Rocket still does not wear one, "As promises go, that was pretty lame."

Bruce steps onto the platform with the others and suddenly Dani feels another squeeze on her hand, Steve's diagonal from her―the other still holding his shield, and the SuperSoldier has on a pair of eyebrows that are definitely concerned, worried.

The eighteen-year-old swallows the lump in her throat as she signals the non-verbal message with a reassuring tug back.

He takes a glimpse at both the dark-haired girl and the redhead: Natasha, and Dani. Both two people very important to him.

It aches him a bit inside upon departing due to the fact that they are on different missions, though no matter what he knows they will protect each other. Take care of one another. The child's gaze travels in-between her two Co-Parents, surrogate mother, and father―Mom and Dad, and she is aware of their unspoken connection represented and strengthened by the bond they share over her.

How much with all of their heart, they love Danielle, and she loves them, too.

Steve every time needs verbal confirmation, just as Natasha did once before.

He turns to lock eyes with the woman, his closest friend, voice tight and gravelly when asking, "You got her?"

Natasha folds her bottom lip over her upper, understanding and nodding almost simultaneously, "I've got her. We've got each other."

I'll take care of her. Don't worry. I'll keep her safe.

"I'll make sure Natty and Clint are safe," Dani says, hand over her chest insinuating she swears it, making complete and total sense considering her significant increase in power compared to the other human individuals.

Although they are trained ex assassins and are incredibly talented, Dani is on a level of higher-being existence.

More to be expanded upon later. Her confidence and perceived truthfulness cause Steve's features to crack one more smile, an adoring and soft one. Using the hand that still holds Dani's, he picks it up and brings it towards his mouth, planting a kiss there that is light as a feather's.

Just how the child remembers it to be.

The time has come. Whirring noises begin from above them, inciting that the machine has officially turned on and is running properly. Preparing to send the Avengers to their designed locations.

More beeping occurs, and before more, Steve and Dani release from holding onto one another.

Before helmets go on, Black Widow remarks to her teammates, "See you in a minute."

Her playfulness is enjoyed in the expression Captain America gives her, and more action from above results in Dani's face to be completely covered except for her eyes by the automatic headgear on the Quantum Realm suits. She intakes a big breath.

One she was surely gonna need, as not even a millisecond later, WHOOSH! The Avengers are shrunk down and entered into the Quantum Realm, traveling at no point and time to different points and times in history. This was it.

Whatever it takes, it's all led up to this. To the end, but a beginning.

For most if not all, it was important to always remember... to do their best, and from here is when the Time Heist officially begins.

Knock 'em dead.

❀❀❀

Well... Welcome to the amazing and incredibly nostalgic 'Time Heist', complete with extreme deja vu (Olivia Rodrigo) and other fun (awful) instances to come. This is what you signed up for is what I'll say, I guess that applies to me too, though.

So dissecting this old little chappy here... Dante and Dani finally kissed! If it seemed like the time leading up to them actually kissing/becoming official was completely drawn out and extended (in this chapter & in their whole storyline basically) have no fear because that was absolutely 100% the point! Their love story is a slow burn. Considering Dani's experiences with love in general, as we remember she did not actually understand nor know about the concept of 'Love' until the age of nine... never thinking to bring it up with Steve though they loved one another ever since he adopted her... so my guess for her character would be that she would be very apprehensive when it comes to developing relationships with other. She's very thoughtful but a little distrusting if you don't know her well, and that has rooted in past childhood trauma, aka the way she was treated by Deborah and Joseph-her bio parents.

I feel like you should treat that info I just gave you like that Mickey Mouse shtick about the 'surprise tool' (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse fans anyway who know what I'm talking about) because I really be saying over here about Dani's character dissection: "It's a surprise tool that will help us understand later."

Her purpose for doing the things she does and acting the way she does around characters who maybe other people around her are close to... but she hasn't spent enough time with them to decide how she feels. I'll let you guess who that may be.

Anywho, hope you enjoyed this chapter of relatively much tranquility and peace, and I'm here to tell you that the next few (covering the Time Heist will be split into two chapters) ... it's about to stop getting fluffy really fast, because as y'all know... Dani is going to Vormir. That's been the plan since day one, so, that's all I'm saying on that.

Bring some tissues the next, next time I post, all right? Or just the next time because if you haven't seen the gifs in the saga two chapter break ... 2023 Steve Rogers is about to have a run-in with 2012 Dani Rockland ... should. be. interesting. 🤭

Please vote, comment, and do anything you can to show me what you thought of this chapter, and your predictions, and thoughts on Dantani??? (Ship name for my loves Dani and Dante who are the cutest beans) & this A/N is way too long so thanks for reading it if you did. I usually tend not to do these.

K YEAH BYE!

xoxo, Alessandra (dreamkept)
