Chapter 3

Sann's POV

Sann looked around the tent to observe her surroundings. It was a big tent but not fairly large. It was barren left for a simple cot she was currently sitting on, a wooden stool, a makeshift table by the other side and a bag filled with what appeared to be fabrics.

Sann got up on her feet to get a closer look around. As she took a few steps, she felt a weird tingling feeling beneath her feet.

She looked down and saw the green grass. When Sann had walked over to the human, Christopher, she hadn't realized the feeling but now, it had her whole focus.

Sann crouched down to the ground and extended her hand to the grass. It was soft. She moved her hand through the grass blades and they brushed against her skin. It felt like an assault on her senses.

She had seen everything mortal lands had to offer but still... she hadn't experienced any of it for herself. Just seen it from far away. That's what she remembered. In a flash, a memory came back to her.

She was up in the clouds, her wings wide open behind her back and she was looking down. Forests and green scenery far down below and a small town. Humans were milling about their houses and going on with their daily activities.

Just as soon as the memory had came to her, it was gone. Sann closed her eyes, tried to bring it back and more, but it did not work.

She reopened her eyes and moved to the brown bag by the corner. Sann sat down beside the bag with her legs beneath her. Upon opening the bag, she found a tunic on the very top.

It was a deep red and made out of wool. Sann took it in her hands and held it out. It was big, the garment meant for someone with broad shoulders. She held it on herself and noticed that it was the same height of the white shirt she was currently wearing.

Sann guessed the white shirt on her belonged to the human. She set the red tunic aside and rummaged through the bag. There was a long brown pants, two more white shirts and a paper.

Sann took the paper in her hands and examined it. Upon a closer look, she realised it was a letter. It was addressed to Christopher but before Sann could start reading the letter, someone entered the tent.

She looked up and saw Christoper standing there with garments in his hands. He looked at her and the emptied bag and his belongings spread around it.

Then his eyes found the letter Sann was holding. He set the clothing in his hand on the cot and moved over to her. He took the letter from her hands and asked, "How did you find this?" As he put it back in the bag with the rest of his clothes.

Sann understood she had done something wrong and had clearly offended Christopher in a way. She looked at him and said, "I'm sorry. I was simply curious. If I have done something I shouldn't, please forgive me."

After gathering everything in the bag, Christopher turned his eyes back to Sann and gave a sigh. He looked sorry for reacting like that. "You don't have to be sorry. It's just that... the letter means a lot to me." He said.

Sann nodded her head in understanding. That was an object Christopher treasured. Like most people value their gold and jewellery.

Christopher stood up from his crouched position and held out a hand to Sann to help her up. Sann looked at the hand he was extending her for a moment, not sure what to do, and then placed hers in it. He pulled her up gently to help her stand next to him.

When she was up, Christopher let her hand go and walked over to the cot. Sann followed him. He pointed to the garments he had brought and said, "I could not find a dress Lady Sann. There are no women in our midst at the camp, I could only find you pants and a shirt." Christopher said.

"Thank you." She said keeping her gaze on the clothes he placed on the cot. Then she quickly added, "Thank you, Christopher." Something flashed in Christopher's eyes as he heard Sann say his name for the first time. Sann watched with wonder as his cheeks gained some colour to them. She wanted to reach out and touch them, the pink colour intriguing but she held her hand back.

Something told her that wasn't an appropriate thing to do.

Sann turned to the task at hand and got to changing clothes. She reached down and held the hem of the white shirt she was wearing to pull it up. She started lifting it but before she could move it far, Christopher's eyes widened and he quickly held his hand to signal her to stop.

He had his head turned to the side and covering the front of his eyes. And Sann could see that his cheeks were a brighter shade of red now.

"Milady, it is not appropriate for a woman to undress in front of a man if they are not wedded." Christopher said as he continued covering his eyes.

"Oh." Sann said in understanding.

"I will be outside if you need me for anything." Christopher added and quickly exited the tent without looking in Sann's direction.

With Christopher out of the tent, Sann took the shirt off and placed it on the cot. Then she grabbed the brown pants and pulled it through her legs. Although her height was tall, the pants' legs were long and collected at her ankles. Then she pulled the blue tunic over her head. It had a v-shaped cut on it's collar and long sleeves.

The tunic fit her better than the pants but the sleeves were still a little bit long.

On the side of the cot, Sann saw the brown worn out boots and she sat down on the cot to pull them on. It was definitely a few sizes too big but she shook her foot and it stayed on.

When she was dressed, Sann made her way to the tent's entrance and opened the tent's fabric to the side. Sunlight blinded her eyes for a second before her eyes adjusted.

She stepped outside and stopped to take the scene in before her. The open field was covered in many more tents like the ones she had just came out of. Most were smaller than Christopher's and only a handful was the same size of his. But all were the colour of navy blue.

In the middle of the field and at the center of the tents, there was a bigger tent than any other. It towered the others and was clearly visible. Sann wondered who that tent belonged to.

Christopher spoke from the side and captured Sann's attention. "I see you are dressed. I will see to it that you will be provided with appropriate clothes as soon as you can Lady Sann."

Sann inclined her head in thanks.

She turned her head around to look around the camp once again and saw other humans, males. A couple of the males was close to Sann and they stopped to look at her as they were passing by. Sann looked back at them with curiosity and reproach. She had never been this close to humans before and this many at once as far as she could recall.

All of them had different heights, hairs, eye colours and builds. Sann tried to inspect everyone's detail. They were looking at her differently and she wondered for a second if they could tell whether she was different or not.

Before she could find answer to that question, Christopher stepped in front of her. She wondered if he was preventing her to see other humans or for them to see her.

Sann looked up in Christopher's face and he said, "The commander wants to see you milady."

With that, he turned and started walking away, Sann started after him amongst the gaze of the other humans residing in camp.

And as they continued in their way, Sann realised where they were headed. They were going to the big tent in the middle of the camp.
