Chapter Three
I felt humiliated. Who does that guy think he is?
Running until I reached the girl's changing rooms, I slammed the door behind me. I sobbed on to the nearest bench. The sword-fighting was the one thing I was good at. Now I wasn't good enough at that either.
I was usually the best at it. Ryan had his archery. I had my sword-fighting. No one had beaten me before.
I thought back to Dionysus. He was gorgeous. No! You're not one of those girls! Snap out of it! I told myself.
"Hey." I turned around to see Ryan standing in the doorway, right behind me was god-boy Dionysus. He was the last person I wanted to see. His wavy hair was down and his eyes penetrated mine.
"Wow, your eyes are so pretty! Heterochromia. That's rare in both mortals and divine creatures." He smiled. I glare at him.
"You two shouldn't be in here," I growled. Ryan stepped inside cautiously and stood beside Dionysus.
"Wouldn't be the first time," Dionysus gave me a sly smirk and Ryan smacked him upside the head.
I giggled and immediately tried to smother it. I guess I was kind of overreacting. At least he came to see if I was alright.
Wiping my eyes, I got up. "Do you two know each other?" I asked them suspiciously.
"Briefly," Ryan replied, "I walked into him at my sister's party. Though he was in a toga at that point."
Suddenly it clicked: the grape scent, the girls and his sword-skills. He was the God of Alcohol. Dionysus.
His cocky grin, when he saw the recognition in my eyes, proved that I was right. I gaped at him. What was a god doing at our school?
"You seem to be a magnet for strange things, Saskia," He answered my thoughts, "I thought I'd come check it out." I fainted.
When I came around, I was in the school office in a makeshift bed. I sat bolt upright and looked at the time. I only passed out for thirty minutes, which means that I didn't miss the archery or chariot-racing.
I threw the covers and snuck out of the office without the receptionist seeing me. People were throwing shotputs when I walked back on to the field. Walking past Dionysus, he was surrounded by the most beautiful girls in the school. I felt his intense stare on my back and turned around. He smiled and I noticed two dimples, which dented his cheeks.
Ryan had finished throwing the shotput, when I reached him. It had covered quite some distance but for once, he didn't win. "I was worried about you," he replied when I asked.
"I'm okay," I smiled, "just a bit of a shocker when you realise that a classmate is actually a god." Ryan laughed. His laughter made me feel much better and warmer inside.
I grabbed him a water bottle and he chucked it over his head and drank the remaining drops. My mind wondered back to Dionysus. I saw him laugh with his squad of girls. Unconsciously, the corners of my mouth twitched. He turned to look at me and our eyes locked.
My heartbeat quickened and my breath got lodged in my throat. I immediately tore my eyes away. He's a god, I thought, These feelings are perfectly normal. I just met him. I can't be falling him yet.
"You sure you're okay?" Ryan snapped me out of my thoughts, his beautiful eyes filled with concern. I nodded.
Ryan and I sprinted to the shed to get our chariot out. Ryan pulled it out and we attached the two sturdy Jutland ponies.
I took over the reigns and Ryan picked up the thunder bow. Our white chariot rolled down the field to the starting line.
We took our positions, as everyone else started to arrive. First a golden chariot pulled by a shire horse. Then two Suffolk Punches and a sunset themed chariot. Their coats glistened a deep chestnut in the sun. A few silver chariots pulled up, driven by dapple grey horses.
Finally, a purple and gold chariot rolled to the start line on the end. It was covered in pictures of vines and grapes and was pulled by two stocky, pure black horses. Dionysus stood on the platform, his dark blue eyes had a dangerous glimmer in them. His hair was tied back in a half-up man bun and across his eyes was a thick strip of war paint. His robes floated around him in the breeze.
We locked eyes again and he gave me a dangerous smirk. My heart pounding in my chest, I turned my head back to the front.
The whistle blow and we set off. Ryan shot bullet after bullet, slowing everyone else down. I dodged a few nerf bullets and sticks from other people. Our palomino ponies heaved our chariot forward.
Ellie Brown tried to hit me with a wooden stick, dodging Ryan's rapid fire. Holding the reigns in one hand, I pushed her away and she flew off course. I winced as her chariot capsized.
The gold and purple chariot caught up with us and with a burst of power took the lead. We glared at Dionysus and I urged the ponies onwards.
Eventually we took over again and grinned. Suddenly, the ponies reared, causing Ryan and I to fall harshly from the platforms. Dionysus pulled his horses to a halt and jumped off.
"Are you okay? What happened?" he asked, helping me up. I nodded unable to speak.
How did know one see it?
I looked into Dionysus's worried eyes. He saw it too. There was a Chimera in front of the chariot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I suppose it was kind of obvious that Dionysus was a god! XD
Where did that chimera come from?
If you had a chariot what would it look like?
Do you think Saskia was overreacting?
