Chapter Six
We stared at the creatures. Maci, Ryan and I unconsciously, shuffled behind the god standing with us.
"Well this might be a small problem," Dionysus stated.
"You think?!" Maci replied exasperated.
The leucrota snarled menacingly. They edged closer. Grinning widely, showing off their sharp bony ridges in their mouths.
"Dionysus," they hissed. He didn't look the slightest bit worried. Then again he is one of the Twelve Olympians.
Suddenly the demonic hyenas charged forward.
I felt an arm around my waist and found my self in the shopping centre in the middle of town. Ryan and Maci let go but Dionysus still had his arm around my waist. I could smell the sweet smell of grapes and felt his soft, almost curly hair brush my cheek as he leaned in.
"You okay?" He whispered in my ear, his breath tickling my neck.
"That felt kind of weird but I'm alright," I smiled, pretending to be immune to his adorable dimples. He chuckled.
Ryan glared at him and I pulled away from the wine god. Dionysus raised his eyebrow but said nothing.
"What now?" Maci asked. We shrugged.
The shopping centre was completely empty and eerily quiet. Maci ran to the doors and tried to open it. It wouldn't budge.
She swore and looked at Dionysus expectantly. "Don't look at me," he said, "I don't have enough energy to get us all out again. Though I think Apollo and his boyfriend Mercury are nearby. I'll go get them." Before we could protest he disappeared.
As soon as he left, we heard a sound outside.
My breath got caught in my throat. Staring straight at me was a leucrota. It reared on its hind-legs and started to deform. The others joined it.
Standing before us, were five girls. Each had lots of freckles, long curly hair and cruel brown eyes. High-pitch giggles left their mouths in sync.
On their hands were long, sharp nails that resembled Wolverine. The girls stepped towards us, manic grins on their faces.
"This is going to be our first kill in centuries," they hissed.
"first time the gods have let us kill in centuries," the middle one added.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Zeus himself ordered your death himself," she replied.
They charged towards us and we ran as fast as we could away from them.
As we were running, we saw a sport shop, which sold archery sets as well. Ryan grabbed one and joined us back outside again. We had somehow lost the hyena girls.
Bow raised, Ryan followed Maci and I into Nando's. I hit behind the till, Maci crouched behind a table. and Ryan with his bow and arrow pressed against the wall beside the door.
We waited with baited breath as the leucrotas peered into the glass window. They then disappeared again. Hopefully to wherever they came from.
"Well that was interesting," Maci broke the silence, "Thank god they're gone."
Maci obvious has never read a fiction book because as soon as she said that we heard the high-pitch laughter from inside Nando's.
"For god sake, Maci!" I screamed as one vaulted over the till. I launched a bottle of vodka at it and the floor beside me became covered in vodka, glass and a strange dark purple liquid, which secreted from the leucrota's damaged head.
"How is this my fault?!" she creamed back as a leucrota jumped on to the table in front of her.
Maci grabbed the glass bottle of Peri-Peri sauce and fired it at the laughing hyena's mouth. It cried out in agony as Nando's hottest sauce landed its tongue and leaked into its eyes.
Maci jumped back as it lunged for her. The thing collapsed to the floor, an arrow protruding from its back.
Ryan's eyes glimmered with satisfaction as he lowed his bow. Surrounding him was a three dead leucrotas, their blood splattered his clothes, cheeks and made a small purple moat around him.
He helped me over the till and we did our best to mop up the mess. We disposed of the bodies, after multiple attempts to flush them down the toilet, in a tightly knotted dustbin bag.
Dionysus appeared outside Nando's. He was searching for us. Maci dashed out with the bag for him to dispose of with his divine powers.
I moved to leave too but as I did, I felt a hand wrap around my wrist. Ryan pulled me back and I hit the table behind me. He placed his hands either side of me and stared straight into my eyes.
"You like him," he stated, I could see the twinge of jealousy appear in his eyes again.
"I literally just met him the other day," my flushed face was not helping my cause but at this point it wasn't to do with the attractive wine god outside the restaurant.
"That's what really pisses me off," Ryan growled, "This random guy appears and suddenly you start showing interest, which for some reason he returns."
"What do you mean?" I asked, slightly offended.
"I mean I don't trust his intentions. You just met him the other day, so why the sudden interest? Something doesn't add up."
"Maybe you're just jealous."
"Maybe I am. Maybe I'm tired of you liking other guys. God Saskia! You've known me your whole life and yet I'm not enough for you. You only see me as a friend, nothing more."
His eyes bore into mine, causing my heartbeat to accelerate.
"That's not true!"
I blushed, realising what I said. A small smirk played with corners of his mouth. He pulls me closer and we close our eyes, our noses inches apart.
Before are lips could lock, we heard someone calling us. Ryan pulled back, disappointed as Maci and Dionysus opened the door to Nando's.
"Hurry up!" Maci said, as she walked in and dragged us out, before we knew what was happening, "Honestly! What was taking you so long?!"
"Nothing."
