Chapter One

Unknown POV

Olympus buzzed with energy. Every god, goddess and monster were preparing for battle. My cape and hair were flowing out behind me as I ran down the palace corridor.

The corridor was made of gold and marble. There were thick columns and windows that showed the whole of Greece.

It was strange to think that once the Greeks worshipped us. Just as other civilisations had worshipped other gods.

Many of those gods no longer existed. Not because people stopped worshipping them - us gods continue to live until some other celestial being kills us - but because of us. The Greek gods and goddess.

Strictly, speaking it was Zeus's fault. Many things were Zeus's fault. This time Zeus couldn't keep his thoughts to himself - usually there is something else he can't keep to himself but I'll let you draw your own conclusions about what that is (clue: Hera wasn't happy).

Zeus thought that we should be the only gods and had begun a mission to destroy every other deity. First the Egyptians - now the Romans.

Personally, I didn't see what was wrong with other gods and goddesses but as a minor god - my opinion didn't matter.

The Romans had been the hardest to fight so we gave up and took out the Egyptians instead.

I continued to run until I reached the Oracle. She was already waiting for me. Her blonde hair hung around her shoulders like a halo.

I knelt before her and asked what was to become of the future. She smiled and closed her eyes. When she opened them, they were dark and misty like a blind person's. She opened her mouth and chanted my prophecy.

Her eyes de-fog and I stagger backwards in fear at what I heard. My complexion goes pale and my eyes widen. "My dear goddess," the oracle looks at me with concern, "What is it? What did I say? Are you alright?"

I shake my head. "Don't worry, I'm ok," I reassure her. I try to force a smile.

I'm not alright. The truth is she told me I would fall in battle. I didn't know how. Therefore, I couldn't do anything to stop it. She might as well have written "DOOMED" across my forehead.

Nervously playing with my sword, polýchromos, I watched as Apollo tacked up my horse. He had witnessed me struggling to put the bridle on with shaking hands and claimed it was too painful to watch so forced me to the corner of the stable, while he took over.

"There, there sorted!" He patted my mare's dapple grey coat and send me a grin. I didn't return it. "Are you alright?" he asked. At first I nodded but then unable to contain it I fell crying into his arms. I told him everything.

"I'm going to die! And my soul is going to be trapped in a mortal's body!" I sobbed, "Admittedly, the  chosen one will either save the world or die trying - but still! I don't want to die!"

Not knowing what to say for once in his life, he just held me tight and patted my back. We stayed like that for awhile. It was quite comforting.

"Gods" Zeus roared, "Its time! This time we will kill all the Romans!"

Apollo left to get his horse ready. Half-heartedly, I led my horse out of the stable. Grabbing polýchromos, I climbed into the saddle and we set off.

The Roman gods were ready for us. Jupiter sat proudly at the front beside his wife Juno. I wondered if they had marriage issues too.

Zeus rode his horse down the battlefield and met Jupiter in the centre. They spoke to each other before turning back to their armies. I had no idea what they said, seeing as I can't lip read.

Both Kings of the Gods gave a menacing battle cry as  we all charged. I dug my heels into my horse and we powered forward, slicing gods and monsters.

This was wrong. They're just like us. In fact, you could call the Roman gods our counterparts. Zeus isn't the king that I once looked up to. Now, he was power-hungry and on a quest for celestial blood. The only gods left were us, the Romans and the Norse gods.

I heard a cry of agony near me, which was louder than the others. A pure grey horse had fallen. Underneath, crying in pain, was a man. His black hair was curly on the top and the rest cut close to his head. I knew he couldn't die from that but would be trapped there until someone kills him.

Making sure that no one was looking, I slid off the back of my mare. Cautiously, I stepped towards the dead horse and his owner. The man stopped his tears as neared him, his startling green eyes boring into mine.

We shared a look. Both of us knew what I was supposed to do. He stared at me as I raised my sword. Closing his eyes, he braced himself for the impact. Instead, I cut straight through the horse. Blood sprayed everywhere, causing my mare to whinny in fright.

I pushed both halves of the horse off the Roman. He had already begun to heal. I hauled him to his feet. He was slightly wobbly though so I had to sit him back down. On his feet were a pair of winged sandals. On of the wings was completely broken, the other flapping weakly.

"You're Mercury?" I asked. He nodded. I then told him my name. "You're like Hermes, though I expect you won't steal my Waggon Wheels." We grinned at each other. The smiles instantly fell off our faces as we noticed Apollo.

To my surprise, he knelt down and started to analyse Mercury's injured legs, which were nearly healed at this point. "Come on," he said, pulling Mercury up and looping an arm around his shoulders, "let's get you out of here."

I watched them leave. Zeus was going to kill me if he found out. However, he wouldn't get the chance. Before, I had chance to react, the god of war, Mars, pierced my skin with his sword.

I fell to the ground, desperately trying to hold on my life. It couldn't end like this. I remembered that the oracle had told me about two souls sharing one body.

I looked down on Earth one last time. In a hospital in England, a small child was laying in her cot, talking to herself in her own language. Her eyes were different colours, like my sword. She was perfect.

Taking one last divine breath, I projected my soul to the young child and begun to share her body.
