XIII.
Elijah had invited Augustine to a meeting he had created in the hopes of bringing the factions of New Orleans under a peaceful rule. The witches, humans, and vampires had all been gathered to discuss and Augustine had deemed not to mention the fact that Elijah did not include the wolves because he was quite angry with his little wolf at the moment.
She hadn't reached out to him one time since his kidnapping. He wasn't sure if the two were mad at him but he was quite angry. He had also just wanted to get out of the compound because as he had discovered this morning when he walked in on something disturbing, his brother had chosen to shack up with a certain red headed witch for his own purposes and she was clearly delusional in thinking she could make him jealous.
He could not be arsed into dealing with any of them.
"St. Anne's has long been neutral ground in our city. So, it's only fitting that we gather in this chamber at the behest of Elijah Mikaelson to bring harmony to this place we call home. Thank you all for coming." Father Kieran tells them all, giving Elijah the floor.
Elijah stands and nods at the man in thanks. "Yes, thank you for coming. And welcome. These are the rules of the city according to Marcel Gerard." He tears the document in half. "Which, of course, no longer apply, because I'm in charge."
"You said that if we came along, that we would get to run things by ourselves. Never mentioned anything about making yourself king." Diego challenges.
Elijah half smirks at the man. "Well, you were each selected to represent your own communities. In our honor, however, any issues that arise between factions, it will come to me. Now, we are all responsible for the current chaos in the city. However, you have one very, very simple choice ahead of you here: you can all play nicely together, or you can leave."
Hayley approaches Jackson outside of the shack, noting how he is watching all of the eolves wrestling around. "Shouldn't you be out there playing Fight Club with the rest of the frat boys?"
He smiles at her. "Nah. That's just for pecking order. They already know who's the Alpha."
"Sorry. This is just a lot more family fun than I'm used to." She shyly admits.
"Well, maybe I can help you get used to it."
Oliver joins the two with a look of disgust on his face as he looks at her. "Then all we got to do is just forget that she spent half her life with humans, and the other half with vampires."
"Hey, back off!" Lucy spits at him with her arms crossed, she had heard him say it as she was walking by and would not let him speak to her sister like that.
"It's okay. If the runt of the litter has got something to say, he should say it." Hayley straightens herself and glares at the man daringly.
"You know, word from the Quarter is your boy Elijah and Augustine are holding some kind of power summit. Guess who wasn't invited?" He scoffs.
Hayley and Lucy give each other a confused look. "Where did you hear this?"
He shakes his head. "It doesn't matter. The point is is that we're stuck here living in the swamp, while your vampire boyfriend's deciding who gets what in the city. But, I guess that shows how much respect he's got for the werewolves, huh? Even though one of em is one."
Augustine takes another sip of his whiskey as he leans back in his chair ignoring the utter chaos happening around him. The factions have been arguing about their territories for over thirty minutes and it didn't look like it would stop anytime soon.
"We would consider it an act of war!" Genevieve growls threateningly.
Kieran pinches the bridge of his nose. "We're getting nowhere. You vile creatures cannot agree."
"Father, calm yourself, please." Elijah yells and everyone quites for a moment. "Thank you. Now returning to the issue of boundaries, you will all heed to the following-"
Augustine's eyes are drawn to the doors that slam open and they darken when he realizes it was Lucy and Hayley barging in. "Are you serious? You're dividing up the city, and the werewolves don't even get a say?" Hayley yells.
Diego stands from his chair looking angry. "What the hell is she doing here?"
"Diego, sit. We are not dividing the city. We're establishing boundaries-" Elijah tries to calm everyone down but no one is having it.
"No, Elijah! There is not gonna be a peace if the werewolves are excluded. They want a seat at the table. And if they don't get one, I can guarantee that you will all regret it." Hayley angrily tells him, she even spares Augustine an angry look that he had known about this and not advocated for them. He raises his eyebrows at her wondering if she really had the audacity.
Everyone in the room began to argue again and Elijah looks to Augustine urging him to follow as he quickly leads Lucy and Hayley into a secluded area to speak. Augustine sighs but follows anyway.
"Do you have any idea what it took just to get those people in one room together?" Elijah questions the two in outrage.
"No, actually, I don't! Because I didn't even know what you were doing out here until someone else told me. Tell me something, Elijah. Did you leave the werewolves out because of me?" Hayley says, directing her question to Augustine as he steps into the room.
"I excluded them because they no longer reside in the French Quarter. My immediate concern is to end the mounting conflict here. Now, I can assure you once this treaty is solidified, it will expand to include your people." Elijah tells her. Augustine responds shortly after. "Do not be cross with me, I did not decide anything."
"But you could have advocated for the wolves!" Lucy argues with him.
He raises a curious eyebrow at the two. "And why would I do that? The only two wolves I care about in this state are ignoring me or I haven't seen in weeks, who would I advocate for?"
Both women purse their lips at him almost identically.
"Hayley, are you absolutely certain that you shouldn't return to the compound, given your circumstances?" Elijah questions.
Hayley sarcastically laughs. "You think the baby belongs there? You think that's where she'll be safe?"
Lucy and Elijah's eyes snap towards Augustine to see how he would take her comment. His jaw clenches, looking furious. He grabs her by the arm and drags her outside of the church leaving Lucy and Elijah alone.
"The wolves deserve a voice. Give them one. You know it's the right thing to do." Lucy tells Elijah.
"Let go of me!" Hayley snaps as they reach the front of the church, he gently pushes her against the church uncaring of the bystanders walking by. "Do not ever make any type of statement again insinuating that my daughter does not belong with me or that she is not safe with me." He warns.
"I know that crazy witch has been spending her nights at the compound, my baby is not safe there!" Hayley struggles against him but he only pushes her against the building harder and clicks his tongue in annoyance. "That's it? You have been ignoring me because you are jealous? You annoying little girl."
"Do not call me that!" She raises her voice at him.
"Do not go weeks with out informing me of the well being of our child because you are jealous!" He snaps back at her, raising his voice as well which surprises her because he is always the calm one. Truth be told since opening up to his siblings a little bit in the cemetery he had caught himself being a lot more expressive in multiple ways unintentionally. He hadn't even minded this time because the little wolf had sincerely pissed him off.
Her face softens in guilt, not realizing that by ignoring him and staying in the Bayou she was also keeping him away from his daughter. "I didn't even think-"
"Of course you didn't." He snarls. "Do not ever do that again, or you won't like the consequences."
"And what does that mean?" Her eyes widen in disbelief.
He steps closer to her and leans down to her ear. "It means that no matter how much I care for you, my daughter will always be first. And no one, not even you will ever keep me from her."
She shoves him away from her and he allows her to. "You say that and yet you're sleeping with the leader of the witches that wanted to kill her!"
He clenches his hands at his sides attempting to calm himself down. "I am not sleeping with that red headed wench you insufferable insecure woman!"
"Don't lie to me, August!" Hayley yells, hurt. "Elijah told Lucy you two had history and the word around the quarter is that she goes to the compound late and night and leaves early in the morning, i'm not stupid."
"Did my brother also mention to Lucy that he and I walked in on her and Klaus fucking this morning?" He practically snarls at her. Her face falls in shock as her mind works a thousand miles a minute trying to process what he had just said.
"So you're not..." She trails off and he scoffs. "No, I am not fucking her, Hayley."
She sighs in relief but he was still furious with her, he points a stern finger in her face. "Do not ever keep my daughter from me again. And just as you proclaimed, word spreads fast around the quarter so do not believe for even a second more that I don't know you've been getting a little too close to a certain Alpha and don't you ever dare think I won't make you watch as I tear his head from his body and shove it down every person in that packs throat if he even lays a finger on you."
Her mouth falls open, the words lost in her throat as she hears his declaration. "It's not like that." She whispers.
"You weren't betrothed as infants? You're lying a bit too easily for comfort." He growls.
"Lucy." She closes her eyes in defeat. "It's not like that for me, August."
She observes him begin pacing, his whole body was tense and he was heavily breathing in and out in attempts to calm himself down. "You should leave." He sternly tells her. Her eye brows furrow in confusion and concern. "August I know that you're mad but-"
"Can you do as your told for once?" He snaps as he stops pacing and turns his back to her. He closes his eyes and places his hands over his knees. Hayley is silent for a moment but surprises him as he suddenly feels her grab his hands. He snaps his eyes open feeling like he was going to tear someone's throat out for merely a second before he realized what she was doing.
He allows his hands to be guided to her stomach and stares at it for a few moments. He lightly jumps as he feels a small movement against his hand. All of his previous anger instantly vanishes. "Was that.."
"Your daughter." Hayley whispers. "She's started to kick. And really hard. It sucks."
"She's a Mikaelson." He mumbles.
"What was that?" Hayley questions, gesturing to what just happened and his lack of control over his emotions. It was nice to see the man not so cold for a few minutes but it slightly worried her.
She immediately regrets asking as his jaw clenches and his walls go back up. "Maybe if you cared to reach out at least once since I was kidnapped and tortured, you would know." He coldly tells her.
"The pack-" She guiltily tells him and he sarcastically chuckles. "Right. Don't make me come find you, Hayley. Because I promise next time I will if you keep my daughter from me."
Hayley blinks, he's gone and she's left staring at the space he had inhabited with a frown.
"This is awkward." Lucy scratches her head from behind her with Elijah besides her. They had heard Augustine yelling from inside the building and ran out to see if something had happened and then realized it was just him and Hayley arguing.
Hayley spins around not even noticing they were there. "You told him about Jackson?" She questions her sister.
"It's not my fault you were ignoring him!" Lucy whines.
"Excuse my brother's behavior, Hayley. The past few weeks have not been kind to him." Elijah, the ever so respectful brother tells her. She looks to the ground biting her lip anxiously. "Elijah, what happened to him when he was taken?"
Elijah narrows his eyes at her for a moment. "Well asides from finding out our sister plotted his death, I suspect the initial kidnapping has little to do with his behavior."
"Don't forget the part where you stabbed him with Papa Tunde's blade." Lucy pipes in, Hayley's eyes widen in disbelief and Elijah looks at her unamused.
"I'm sorry what?" Hayley questions defensively.
"Well I tried to reach you to come speak with him but you were nowhere to be found, you were busy." Elijah's little jab is not unnoticed by either woman. "Anything more you want to know should come from my brother."
Hayley looks at Lucy questioningly. "Do you know?"
"Of course I do." Lucy looks at her like she's dumb. "Don't let him fool you, Augie and I are like this." She holds her fingers up showing they were crossed. Elijah hides his small smile from behind them.
"Do you have any idea what kind of trouble your newest conquest is getting me into?" Augustine grunts as he leans against the column on his brothers balcony.
Klaus was painting on his balcony peacefully when Augustine had barged into the room, swigged down his glass of whiskey, and blamed him for his problems with his baby mama. "Trouble in paradise, brother?"
Elijah joins them with a fierce glare pointed towards Klaus. "Not a fan of cerulean blue?"
"Not a fan of your continued indifference." Elijah glares even harder.
"Well, it's difficult trying to unite a community that has a history of mutual loathing." Klaus shrugs his shoulders.
He scoffs in response. "Spare me the platitudes, Niklaus."
"A perspective, then? If you want peace, you must begin with the werewolves. A hundred years ago, they had a run at ruling this city. As of late, all they've had is time to watch their enemies tear down that legacy." Klaus tells him.
Augustine and Elijah make eye contact. "All the more reason why their enemies are reluctant to bring them to the table."
"Take a page from Bienville, brother. If the table's the obstacle, remove it. Do you recall in 1720, the Governor's desperation to secure our help to build the cities first levees? We sat with him, and refused his offer, and so, he plied us with wine, with corseted women, and with raucous camaraderie until he had his yes." Klaus tells him as he hands both of his brothers a glass.
Elijah drops his glare and a small smile finds it's way to his face. "Are you suggesting that I throw a party?"
Klaus clinks his glass to both of his brothers and they all down it.
Augustine sighs to himself as he see's the mother of his child leaning against the wall of the party watching everyone else dance. All of the factions had joined together for a party per his brothers suggestion and thus far albeit a little tense there were no altercations.
He quickly finds himself in front of her holding his hand out. She gives him a confused look knowing just yesterday he was heavily upset with her, he decides he's not giving her a choice and grabs her hand in his own pulling her towards the makeshift dance floor.
"You and Elijah outdid yourself! You even got Klaus to come out and play." She lightly teases as she settles herself, not understanding where they stand and not wanting to fight again.
"Well, if theres anything that can rip my brother away from his painting it's a party." He tells her honestly.
"That's never a good sign. Klaus once told me that his painting was a metaphor for control. For achieving his vision through sheer force of will." She scoffs jokingly.
"Yes, I do hope our daughter inherits... well everything from her mother and nothing from her father's side." He tells her honestly as he stares down at her small form.
She looks down to their joined forms in attempts to hide her blush. "It is weird being back here." She admits as she looks around.
"You will be back soon enough." He tells her seriously and she scoffs. "Because you don't think it's safe in big, bad Wolf Country? I'm not gonna sit in a rocking chair and knit booties, or haven't you figured that out yet?"
He pulls her tighter against him. "Because my child will be here with me." She looks up to meet his eyes. "And so will you."
Jackson joins them and Augustine's body tenses. Hayley notices this and squeezes his hand nervously.
"Can I have a minute, Hayley?" He politely requests.
"No." Augustine blankly tells him.
Jackson straightens his posture and both alpha males continue to stare each other down. Lucy pops in at the perfect time having seen the scene from across the room. "Augie! I have not seen you this whole time!"
Hayley and Jackson give her an odd look at how over enthusiastic her tone was and Augustine stares at her with a deadpanned glance knowing she was trying to diffuse the tension. "Lucy." He drawls.
Jackson moves to place his hand on Hayley's arm in hopes of suggesting a dance again but Augustine intercepts him. He tightly holds his wrist nearly breaking the bone. "Might I suggest not trying that again?"
"You can't-" He goes to argue but Lucy jumps in front of him and grabs his arm. "Jackson! I came over here to ask you to dance with me. You're not gonna leave me all by myself with no one to dance with right?"
Before he can refute she yanks him away. Augustine keeps his eyes on him as Lucy drags him into the crowd.
"Hey." Hayley places a hand on his cheek hoping to distract him. It was obvious he was two seconds away from killing the man she now considered a friend. She had never been more grateful for Lucy. "It's okay."
Augustine slowly relaxes his shoulders and turns his head toward her. "I need a cigarette."
He drops his hands from her sides and walks away to leave the compound. Once getting outside he sighs and puts a stick in his mouth. He hadn't felt this way about a woman in a thousand years and she just so happened to be one of the most irritating women he had ever met.
He pauses mid cigarette hearing chaos in the compound ensue and he throws his cigarette to the ground knowing he should go make sure the mother of his child is okay. He strolls in nonchalantly noticing Elijah, the wolves, and a few vampires are at the center of the scene.
"What's stopping you? Kill him. Go ahead, Elijah. Do it. I mean, it's not like he doesn't deserve to die." Hayley slightly raises her voice from the stairs. Augustine raises an eyebrow feeling slightly turned on by her attempts of asserting dominance in the situation. "I mean, it was Oliver who handed Rebekah over to the witches so they could torture her. But, then again, wasn't it Diego who led a werewolf massacre last month? And the witches cursed the wolves, while the humans stood back and let it all happen. So, when you think about it, everyone here deserves to die."
"Are approaching a point?" Elijah grits out, angered by the woman's need to intervene in everything.
"If we can't all learn to get along, if our families can't create some sort of community, then what's the point? Kill each other and get it all over with." Lucy steps besides her sister and gives the suited original a small glare for getting an attitude with her sister.
Augustine lowers his head to hide his smirk. He had a feeling this wasn't the last time these two women would put he and his brothers in their places.
