XI.
Elijah enters the compound again after speaking with Monique who had cast some kind of spell on him after informing him of Sophie's recent death. "Anything?" He questions Marcel.
"They're putting eyes and ears out everywhere. Day walkers are working every contact we've got. Cops, dock workers, guys in the Treme... Word is out: anyone trying to earn favor with me gets a lifetime of it if they find them." Marcel tells him, making it clear he is doing everything he possibly can.
"Good. I need a pen and paper." Elijah tells him as he walks away. Seeing his dismissive behavior Marcel rolls his eyes following him. "Hey, am I taking orders from you now, or are we in this together?"
Elijah begins removing his jacket ignoring Marcel's comment. "Pen and paper, Marcellus. Now!"
"I want her back just as much as you do, you know... The three of them." He says as he leaves to get what the man had requested.
"Lucy!" Elijah calls. Lucy and Hayley come running into the study afraid something had happened but both pause realizing he was shirtless and covered in tattoos. He sighs upon seeing Hayley. "Hayley, not a word of this to my brother please?"
"Did you find any... ..thing? What is happening?" Lucy questions as she attempts to not blatantly ogle his body. "I didn't know you had tattoos Elijah."
Hayley looks away and focuses on the wall behind him.
"I need you to make a list of these names." Elijah tells the two. They both step closer realizing the supposed tattoos were all female names. Seeing a name they recognize Hayley looks at him in confusion. "Sabine? Elijah, what is this?"
"I believe they represent the names of the women Celeste inhabited for the past two centuries." He nonchalantly tells the two who's eyes widen.
Marcel rejoins them and hands both women a pen and paper. "It's called a Devinette. It's old school. Kind of a riddle. Witches use them to teach their kids. Solve it, and it disappears."
"Why? What's the point?" Lucy screws up her face.
"Celeste forced me to make a choice between Hayley and my siblings, and now she means to mock that choice, taunting me with a childish game. The longer the game, the more they suffer. To find Klaus, Augustine, and Rebekah, we need to solve this riddle. The solution lies somewhere in these names."
"The name next to Sabine... Annie La Fleur, she's the witch that was shunned from her coven just over a year ago. Never knew why, but I can find out." Marcel tells them as he finds a name he also recognizes.
Augustine lays on a bed in a dirty abandoned room when Genevieve enters. She gently runs her finger across the scar left behind from shoving papa tunde's blade into his abdomen. He groggily opens his eyes feeling her touch, covered in sweat and his skin two shades lighter than usual.
"You poor thing." She whispers tenderly as she picks the scalpel off of the tray. He's unable to speak at the moment due to being so weak and in so much pain but he watches as she moves. "Don't worry, I'm here to help."
She cuts the scar back open and then digs her hand into his body. Augustine attempts to hold back his shouts but can't help it as the woman seems to be taking her sweet time. He shouts end when she finally pulls the knife out allowing him to breathe.
It takes him a couple minutes but he's finally able to sit up, he notices his shirt was gone and nowhere to be seen. He glares at the red head. "Why is my wound not healing?"
"The amount of dark magic contained in that blade? It's gonna take a little while." She tells him.
"Why show me kindness?" He bluntly questions, slightly flinching as she begins caressing his face again. He felt nothing towards her and if he were being honest he was much too tired to move away. "You never did anything to me. And the truth is, seeing you like this, I can't help but pity you. We need to have a talk about your sister."
"Do not speak of my sister." Augustine's eyes darken. "You will not harm her."
"Ah, the protective brother. A shame that loyalty isn't reciprocated. But then, I'm no stranger to Rebekah's treachery. Something you and I have in common. Even Klaus. Here." She holds out a bowl filled with what he can smell contains herbs and blood. "Drink. I'm just trying to help you. Heal you. Get you to see the truth that's been right in front of you for almost a century."
Augustine hesitates but knows deep down if she did all of this work just to bring him here and heal him there was something he was missing. He takes the bowl and gulps it down, slightly gagging on the liquid. He quickly places the bowl down and about pukes but the woman harshly yanks his head back and covers his mouth forcing him to swallow. "Your sister had an unfortunate run-in with some wolves last night. I imagine you're tasting the venom in her blood. It's the only way I can show you what you need to see. In her weakened state, I'll be able to guide her down Memory Lane. That's how I'm going to have my revenge. By showing you her betrayal. Just like I did with Klaus."
She places her hand on his forehead and mumbles a spell under her breath linking all of their minds. "Your sister's tryst with Marcel was only the beginning. You see, the burden of your brothers condemnation was too great. You never tried to stop your brother from doing anything including allowing them to not be together. They conspired to rid themselves of you both for good."
Augustine's eyebrows furrow wondering where she could be going with this. He remembers plentiful clear Niklaus not allowing Marcel and Rebekah to be together. He didn't quite understand the whole ordeal but he didn't see the big deal in it either way.
Clara, Rebekah and Genevieve walk through the club and sit down at a table. "Okay, next round's on me."
"Clara Summerlin, no! I'll be soused." Genevieve giggles.
"Get it while you can, it's the last real gin in the city!" Rebekah tells them with a smile. The two watch as Clara heads to the bar leaving them alone.
"You're nothing like I thought you'd be when I first met you. I was brought up to think your kind were, well..." Genevieve trails off and Rebekah finishes her sentence. "An abomination of nature?"
"You're anything but! Not just you, your whole family is so... elegant" She sighs dreamily.
Making an assumption on who she was gushing over she responds. "Yes, I agree, Elijah is quite peerless."
"I don't know... I mean, he's nice and all, but if I had to go for one Mikaelson boy..."
Rebekah widens her eyes. "Klaus?"
She shakes her head again and smiles. "Klaus is good on the eyes but I would personally go for Augustine."
"Genevieve, who'd have thought a saintly little witch like you would go for the bad boys? I knew we were destined to be friends!" Rebekah cheers. "Well, there's a load of us Mikaelsons. If you like bad boys, you'd love my brother, Kol."
Genevieve tilts her head. "And where is this mystery brother of yours?"
"It's complicated. Like all siblings, we've had our ups and downs. Family feuds. In fact, I was thinking of reaching out to someone we haven't seen in a very long while. I was hoping that maybe you could help me contact them. But it would have to be a surprise. No one could know." Rebekah tells her, lowering her voice.
The red head nods her head. "Of course. Do you want me to find your brother Kol?"
"Actually, I'd like you to find Mikael... our father."
In real life Augustine's whole body tenses at the mention of their father and he quickly stands looking furious. "Enough! It's all lies!"
"Don't dismember the messenger. Part of you must have known. Suspected, at least. Your father came to New Orleans in 1919 to kill you and Klaus, did he not? And as the city burned, he nearly succeeded." She gently tells him.
"My family and I have done some terrible things to each other over the years, but Rebekah would not call my father! No matter how angry she was." He accuses her of lying, their sister would never do something so utterly unforgivable. Let alone to him.
"It's sweet of you to believe that, to believe in her. But, by the time we're done you'll know just how wrong you are." She tells him.
Hayley and Lucy are huddled at Augustine's laptop in his study when Elijah enters. Lucy slightly rises."Hey, look, I found–"
Elijah holds his hand up to stop her from speaking. "You were right about the Deveraux witch."
"Find anything about Clara, the mystery witch?" Marcel interrupts them as he walks in.
Hayley shrugs looking defeated. "Not much. She was a nurse at the Fleur-de-Lis Sanitarium." She sits up as she notices him freeze. "Recognize her?"
She turns the laptop so that both of the vampires could see what the woman looked like. "Top row, second from the right." She says.
Elijah shakes his head looking sure. "No, I don't. Marcel?"
They all look at him noticing he looks alarmed and slightly faint.
"Marcel?" Lucy prompts.
He still doesn't answer and Elijah narrows his eyes at him menacingly. "Do I need to remind you that my brothers and Rebekah are somewhere suffering horribly? If you know something, talk."
He closes his eyes in defeat. "The Sanitarium. That's where you'll find them."
"Are you sure? How do you know?" Hayley quickly stands, happy that they finally have some sort of clue as to where Augustine was.
"I just know."
"How do you know?" Elijah pronounces slower, letting him know he wasn't going to let this go.
"If I'm right, you need to know exactly what we're walking into. We did something, Rebekah and I... I think the witches are trying to use it against her. It was, uh... something that you're not gonna like." He looks guilty as he says this and all three of the other occupants in the room feel their stomach sink.
"Are you ready to see more proof?" Genevieve questions almost excitedly. Augustine doesn't respond. His mind still reeling from the last vision he had seen.
Genevieve is performing a spell in front of a tomb while Marcel and Rebekah stand behind her and watch her work. Genevieve holds up a newspaper article with a photo of Marcel and Klaus at the jazz club and crumples it up, using a wooden blade to hold the paper ball over the flame of the candle.
Augustine furrows his eyebrows in real life. "My father's blade... it went missing when I was a boy. He beat Klaus half to death and then me when I stepped in, so sure he had stolen it. Rebekah was so kind to us in the weeks after the beating... I should have known she was the culprit. She never could stand weapons were things not meant for girls."
"Pran ce mesaj sa a, les cendres sur le vent." Genevieve chants, the news paper catching fire and disintegrating into the air.
Augustine sits up in bed again feeling his whole body shake, realizing the witch was indeed telling the truth. Somewhere in the distance he can assume that Klaus has just heard the same thing he did because he hears him shout Rebekah's name.
At the compound, Marcel has just informed Elijah, Lucy, and Hayley that he and Rebekah had summoned Mikael to New Orleans in 1919.
Elijah paces the floor. "For the better part of a century, I have wondered how Father found us, what foolish mistake that we had made to destroy our time in the one place that we could finally call home. Did you know, I even blamed myself for a time, Marcellus?"
"Elijah-" Lucy tries to gain his attention but he ignores her.
"Niklaus treated you like a son." He points his finger at the man. "Augustine never did anything to you."
"Rebekah. I loved her. I still love her. All we ever wanted was to be together, but as long as Klaus was around, that was never gonna happen. We both knew as long as Klaus said it, Augustine would never disagree with him. But hey, I guess you wouldn't know anything about that, huh?" He subtly looks Lucy's way.
"When Klaus and Augustine learn the truth, there will be no end to Klaus' rage. I have no idea how Augustine will respond. I will not let my sister suffer that wrath."
"Then we need to get to them before he learns the truth." Marcel firmly says.
From behind them Hayley has a large frown adorning her face. She didn't know how Rebekah could do that to August. Regardless of what they went through or did to each other she was the one to tell Hayley about why he's called the fallen angel. What Mikael did to him.
"I'm sorry. I know how much this hurts. To see what she did. To see who she really is. But you needed to know. You needed to see it. And now that you have, you can take your revenge. Our revenge. Please. Go ahead. You'll need your strength for what comes next." Genevieve holds her arm out to him. He grabs it and isn't as gentle as he would ever be with Hayley taking as much as he can. Once he's done he speeds her against the wall by her neck and she stares at him frightened.
He lets her go and walks away with out another word.
He meets Rebekah and Klaus in the hallway. Her eyes widen in horror as she see's both of them pale and looking for revenge.
"Nik. Augustine, it isn't true." She cries.
"I want to believe you, sister. But your face tells a different story." She speeds away as far as she can in her state. "You cannot hide from me, Rebekah! Nor can you run. This ends now."
Augustine and Klaus make eye contact. Both are way too hurt and emotional to say anything to the other right now and they speed after her, quickly finding her in one of the many rooms. "Rebekah! Tired of running?"
"I know how much you enjoy the chase. I'd sooner deny you the pleasure." She spits at Klaus.
Augustine holds the blade in her direction. "You don't deserve to be daggered in a box. You will wish for the dagger."
"You don't have to do this, Augustine. Please."
"After that blade is plunged into your heart, you will be immobilized, imprisoned in a state of raw, inescapable anguish. Time loses all meaning. It's not unlike a living hell, which I find rather fitting, given your treachery." Klaus yells.
Augustine remains semi-quiet as she responds. "Then do it. If that's what you really want."
" Are we skipping the part where you beg for mercy? For forgiveness? Because I was really looking forward to that." Klaus mocks her.
"I'll pass. I know better than to think it would do me any good."
"What would your father think of you now?" Augustine tells her knowing that would trigger her. She lunges at him and Klaus and is easily thrown against the wall. She grunts in pain as she falls to the floor. Marcel appears next to her only infuriating the men more, more so Klaus.
"Just the man I wanted to see."
Klaus punches him across the face. "Rebekah's punishment won't be complete until she watches you die."
"Nik, it was my idea to summon Mikael. If you're gonna hurt anyone, it should be me." She begs.
Augustine speeds to her, his eyes looking dead. He lifts the blade to stab her in the heart when Elijah intervenes and stabs it back into his chest. Augustine's shouts distract Klaus long enough for Marcel to snap his neck and inject him with wolves bane.
"Go. Both of you. Run as far and as fast as you can. Run!" Elijah yells, as they disappear he looks over his brothers forms looking seldom.
Augustine lays in his bed shirtless, still gasping in pain from the blade still being in his chest. Elijah stares at him feeling a little amount of sympathy, unlike Klaus. He never did anything directly to Rebekah, the man had just been to careless about everything for a thousand years some of his siblings felt he should take the blame for not putting a stop to the man sooner.
Lucy rushes into the room and gasps at his current state. He had called her, along with Camille, hoping they would be able to help persuade his brothers from killing Rebekah.
"I need your help." Elijah tells her.
"We are this close to solving the curse Elijah." Lucy hesitantly tells him, but one look at the man below her and she knows she needs to help. "What do you need me to do?" She questions. She looks down and notices the open wound on his chest. "Elijah..." She trails off with uncertainty.
"Papa Tunde's blade is in his chest. Every second it remains it causes untold suffering."
"Get it out of him!" She shouts, looking at him like he's crazy. "Who stabbed him?"
"I did, and now I intend to remove it. You might want to take a step back." He tells her.
She crosses her arms looking uncomfortable as he jams his fist into his chest. "Why did you call me here, Elijah?"
"I believe my brother has begun to care for you. You are the only person on this planet asides from your sister that is missing that he may not try to murder the second he wakes up." He tells her as he pulls the knife out. Augustine groans through clenched cheeks and Lucy winces. "You see, he will be weak as he recovers. So, watch over him and feed him, if you would. But slowly, please, and from your wrist."
"Don't you guys have bags of blood in storage?" She lightly squirms remembering the last time they had done this.
"We do, but your blood is laced with vervain. So, it will burn him. He'll ingest it slower. Perhaps you could use the time constructively? Persuade him not to murder his baby sister." He tells her. "Now, Sabine is missing as well and I have a feeling you know exactly where she is."
She avoids his eyes knowing he is right. Hayley along with the wolves were currently holding the fort down in the Bayou as they held the witch in captivity, knowing she knew the cure. Hayley wanted to come but knew she could get more done at the Bayou than Lucy could. "I don't know what you're talking about."
He sighs, looking at his brother who's eyes were beginning to flutter before speeding away knowing it's best to leave the two women to his brothers.
The first thing Augustine see's when his eyes open is Lucy. She stares down at him worriedly. "Augie." She whispers.
He attempts to get up but she pushes him back down by his shoulder and he groans in pain. "I need a blood bag."
"I've been told to only feed you from my vein." She quietly tells him. His eyes darken. "I am weak and hungry, Lucy. I won't be able to stop. Get me a blood bag." He demands.
She sighs at him. "Promise me that you'll talk to me first, you won't drink it and then disappear."
He eyes her for a moment and then nods his head. She quickly scurries off and is back in less than five minutes with at least five bags in her arms. She gives him one and dumps the rest onto the bed. She places her hands on her hips. "I'm supposed to talk you out of killing Rebekah." She tells him.
"You won't succeed." He tells her bluntly. "Now where is your sister?"
"She's your sister, Augie..." She trails off, purposely avoiding his question.
"She summoned my father to kill me and my brother." He tells her as he throws on a shirt. "I know she had no problem spilling all of my secrets out to you and Hayley. Surely it is not that hard to understand why I want her dead."
"She did." Lucy tells him honestly. "Elijah also told me he told them to run. They could be in Australia by now."
Augustine grabs a cigarette from the table and places it in his mouth. "No they aren't."
"Why are you so sure?" She questions.
He blows the smoke out, away from her direction. "On the off chance that Davina has been resurrected, they'll want her to do a cloaking spell. And that's before Marcel realizes that he won't leave New Orleans. Because it's his home."
Lucy rocks on the heel of her foot wondering why the hell her sister and Elijah thought she could get through to this man. She was silently cursing her sister in her head.
In the Bayou, Celeste has just handed Hayley a mix of herbs in a jar. Her hands were tied to make sure she doesn't try anything. "It's herbs ground into paste. It'll act as a conduit for the spell. On the next full moon, your people become human. Feed it to them, the curse will be broken." She tells the wolf.
"Great way to poison us all at once." Hayley scoffs doubtfully.
"Look. I know you have no reason to trust me, but, Hayley, I actually like you. I was your sister, caring for Elijah when he cared more for his brother, and I ended up dead. So did a lot of others. And from what I heard, you've got it bad for the fallen angel. This, call it a chance for me to give you what I was too in love to give myself. It's a chance to free yourself from the Originals." She tells her truthfully.
Some of the wolves start growling behind her when suddenly Elijah appears. "Whatever she's promised you, it's a lie."
"Elijah, it's okay. I'm okay." She softly tells him.
"She cannot be trusted."
"She's the only one that can help my pack." Hayley argues.
"Do you have any idea what she has done to our family? To Augustine?" He questions her dubiously.
She's silent for a moment, she hadn't spoken to Lucy since she left to be with the man and she hadn't spoken to Augustine since before he disappeared and of course she was worried. But she was the only one that could fight for her pack. "I know you want revenge, and come the next full moon, when I'm sure her cure works, she's all yours."
He does a double take. "Are you suggesting that we hold her captive for an entire month? It would take an army."
"And I've got one." She gestures to the wolves that begin howling. "So help me or get out of my way."
He pauses, seeming to be contemplating before he vampire speeds towards the witch, taking her and the mason jar filled with the cure away from them. He slams her up against the tree. "You're tricking her."
"It's no trick. You're holding the cure for Hayley's clan in your hand. If her wolves take that elixir, the curse is no more. They're free." She tells him.
"You condemned her people to decades of agony, and now you just break the curse without so much as a whimper. Why?" He questions suspiciously.
She laughs. "Because it's the best thing I could do for her and her sister, and it's the worst possible thing I could do to you. No matter what happens now, you've lost her. You destroy that jar, you kill me, Lucy will hate you for snatching her family from her. Now, if you give Hayley the jar, we both know that Lucy will leave you in the end to be with them, and I know that as long as she's alive and happy and fulfilled in ways that you can't even imagine, then I get my revenge. So, you decide. Give her everything she ever wanted and lose her or deny it, see what happens then."
"Is drinking really going to help you right now?" Lucy questions. "You can barely stand."
"It can't hurt me, Lucy. You forget I am an original."
"You're an original and your feelings are hurt, Augie. Vampire or not, that doesn't change the fact that alcohol won't help." She gently tells him.
"My feelings are not hurt." He stares at her blankly and she groans. "Do you ever smile? Or even laugh?"
"After a thousand years you tend to no longer feel obligated to give the world much of anything. No less a smile or a laugh." He tells her.
Her face softens. "I know at least a little bit of what you went through, Augie. But you have to remember that the way you choose to see the world creates the world you see. The world can be a cold and dark place but it can also be so warm and happy if you let it."
"You're being naive." He plainly tells her as he ashes a cigarette. "Take it from the man who's lived a thousand years."
"No you're being naive." She narrows her eyes at him. "Think about this, after a thousand years of life you're having a baby. A daughter. Did you ever think that would happen?"
"No." He admits. Her face slightly brightens but then his next words make her groan. "Because my mother and father saw it fit to deprive me of such."
"You're being a pessimist!" She takes a seat at the table and folds her hands in front of her attempting to look professional. "Name one thing that you think is good in the world."
He eyes her. "Lucy, what are you doing?"
"Well, Camille is a therapist and I'm guessing this is what they do and Klaus seems to respond so theres no reason why it wouldn't work on you." She innocently tells him. When he gives her a deadpanned look in response she glares and points at the other seat. "Sit."
He decides to entertain her and takes a seat. "Now, tell me one thing in the world that you think is good."
"Cigarettes." He answers.
She smacks her hand into her forehead. "Augie!"
He rolls his eyes. "Fine, if I play your little game you will allow me to leave with out nagging me?"
"Nagging yo-" She cuts herself off and takes a deep breath. "Any progress is good progress, Lucy."
"You wouldn't be a very good therapist." He observes as she closes her eyes and seems to be counting to ten. He sighs. "You."
She opens her eyes. "You what?"
"You." He says again but a bit more forceful this time. When she still doesn't seem to get it he throws his head back against the chair. "You are something I think is good in the world."
He looks up again as he hears her sniffle, he looks at her in almost disbelief. "Lucy?"
"That's so nice, Augie!" She gently wipes her eye. He looks away slightly uncomfortable by her so blatantly showing emotions.
"Now, I will take my leave." He stands from the chair and places the blade in his pocket.
"Wait!" She shouts, panicked. "Promise me you won't kill your sister."
"She brought the most vile man to ever walk this planet to our city to have my brother and I killed. That man has tormented us for a thousand years. He killed my child and my wife. My own sister did this to me, Lucy." He grits out.
"I know, I know she did a horrible thing. I don't agree with it." She rushes in front of him hoping to block him from leaving. "But that doesn't mean she should die for it. People do crazy things when they're in love."
A sudden realization crosses his face. "Where is your sister, Lucy?"
Her face slightly pales. "Uh, remember what Rebekah did to you?"
"Lucy." He sighs out of his nostrils impatiently.
She looks down nervously. "She had something to do."
"Not to sound conceited but I have been kidnapped, borderline tortured, and put through the ringer. What is so important that they sent you here instead of her?" His eyes dilate as he thinks of her putting herself in danger.
"A lot has happened outside of what's currently happening with your family, Augie." She tells him.
"Lucy, get out of my way or tell me what your sister is doing that she doesn't want me to know." He demands.
"Promise you won't kill Rebekah." She says sounding just as demanding as him.
He stares into her eyes for a moment realizing she wasnt going to budge. "Fine I won't kill her."
She reluctantly steps out of his way.
He struts past her but then pauses. "Tell your sister that I need a word with her the moment this family business is over with. She's no doubt causing trouble right now and if there is even a scratch on her I will lock her away in the basement forever."
Lucy's eyes widen as she watches him disappear. "Oh god, she is so in trouble. Wait until he meets Jackson."
Elijah and Celeste return to the Bayou where Hayley waiting for them seated on a log. She is alone, with the exception Jackson, who has stayed behind, though still in his wolf-form. "Take it. It will work."
Hayley smiles. "Eve and I will round up as many of our people as we can. Come full moon, I can finally free my family."
"Hayley, I wonder if they have any idea how lucky they are to have you and Lucy." He tells her.
She smiles at him and walks back to the rest of the group but not before saying. "Lucy is lucky to have you."
Augustine walks into the cemetery holding onto Papa Tunde's blade as he listens to his brothers shouts for rage and follows the sounds of his voice.
"REBEKAH! REBEKAH! Cherish the breath in your lungs! It'll be your last."
Night has fallen, and Elijah walks past the crypts before he stops in front of one. Rebekah finally finds him and approaches him, clearly surprised to see him. "What are you doing here? Rebekah, you should be on the other side of the world by now."
"You and I both know that wouldn't have been far enough."
"GET AWAY FROM HER! She's mine." Klaus bellows.
His eyes turn amber as the veins protrude on his face making him look even more menacing. They watch as Augustine appears behind him looking one in the same.
Rebekah and Elijah allow their vampire faces to come out as they brace themselves for the fight ahead.
