VIII.

Augustine sits at the long dining room table that occupied Klaus, Marcel, some vampires, Hayley, and Lucy. Klaus raises his glass to toast. "To my city, my home again. May the blood never cease to flow.."

Marcel lifts his drink with a forced smile. "...and the party never end!"

Augustine noncommittally raises his glass and takes a long gulp of the alcohol. He had been avoiding both of the Marshall women the best he could the past few days and they had both tried speaking to him every chance they got. But this morning his brother decided he needed to be there at the table as he spoke to the vampires now under his rule. "I understand that some of you may have questions regarding the recent change in leadership, and I invited you here tonight to assure you that you are not defeated. No, my intentions moving forward are to celebrate what we have. What Marcel, in fact, took and built for this true community of vampires."

"What about them? The wolves." He sneers as he points to the women at the end of the table. Augustine tightens his grip on his glass but keeps his mouth shut. Klaus, noticing he was not going to answer the man walks toward the two's chairs. "As many of you know, the girl is carrying my brother's child. This is her sister. Consequently, I trust you will all pay them the appropriate respect. However, I understand that some of you are concerned by this vicious rumor that I intend to use the blood of the child to create hybrids. I assure you I do not."

Lucy smirks sarcastically and holds up her own drink. "Uncle of the year."

Seeing everyones looks of doubt Klaus looks slightly frustrated. "It appears I will have to earn your trust. Very well. We'll eliminate the root of your anxiety. You see, how I can I sire any hybrids if there are no more werewolves alive in the Bayou to turn?"

Hayley and Lucy's face become ones of horror."What? Klaus, no!" She argues but it goes ignored.

"So eat, drink, and be merry. And, tomorrow, I suggest you have yourselves a little wolf hunt. Go ahead, have fun. Kill them all!" Klaus orders.

Hayley looks towards Augustine pleadingly and he stares at her blankly in response.

As Lucy attempts to sneak out of the compound downstairs, Hayley is upstairs trying to find Augustine.

She mumbles to herself in frustration as she walks into yet another empty room but she is determined not to give up. She goes into a darker corridor and opens the door at the farthest end of the hall. She pushes the door open and is surprised but relieved that she finally found him.

Augustine raises his eyes from the journal in front of him and his shoulders tense as he realizes who just entered his bedroom. He puts his cigarette out and looks back to the book. "Hayley." He plainly greets.

"You've been avoiding me." She states.

"Hm." He hums but doesn't elaborate further.

Feeling her frustration build she slams the door shut and crosses her arms at him. "You can't seriously let Klaus kill all the wolves in the Bayou."

"Well, to be fair. He won't be the one doing the killing."

"August! There are families down there, children." She emphasizes the last word.

"Rumor has it, that I am no good for children Hayley. Wouldn't want to make things worse."

"I did not say that!" She huffs in anger realizing she was getting nowhere with this.

He slams the book down to the desk making her jump. "No, you and your sister just accused me of allowing my brother to use my daughter as a blood bag."

Her lips part, unsure of what to say to him.

He stands to leave the room, as he walks toward the door she suddenly blocks it. "You can't keep avoiding me August. I'm sorry how that all went down. I don't believe that you'd hurt our daughter. I'm sorry that I hurt your feelings. You have to understand how overwhelming this all is. I have been targeted non-stop from the moment I became pregnant. By wolves, witches, vampires you name it. Forgive me for having a slip up."

He stares down at her small form for a few moments with no response. "You don't have to worry about your wolves, it seems Lucy and Elijah have it all figured out."

Her face becomes confused. "What?"

"He just came for a little visit with her and within a minute she had him bending to her will. He will protect the wolves."

"Were you even listening to what I just said?" She questions in disbelief.

He leans even closer to her face making her breath hitch. "Yes, I understand how overwhelming this is. Which is why I have done every single little thing in my power to make this as easy as possible for you. I understand that may not mean anything to you in the grand scheme of things but do not think I am not trying."

"It means everything." She whispers, eyes flickering to his lips. She slowly raises her palm to his cheek, happy when he doesn't flinch away from her touch like he had before. "I'm sorry, August."

Her breath gets caught in her throat as he starts to lean in. Her eyes flutter closed but squeeze in disappointment as he turns his head last second and kisses the very corner of her lips. By the time she opens her eyes again he was gone. Her eyes fall onto the book he had been reading and her curiosity spikes.

Augustine joins the meeting with the humans his brother had invited him to. Father Kieran had gathered the faction in the church. "Klaus, Marcel, Augustine, thank you for coming. We are aware of the change in the leadership in your community, and we thought it was time to make the appropriate introductions."

The mayor and sheriff stand to introduce themselves to the new originals. "We wanna be sure you understand how things work around here."

Klaus looks at his brother, amused. "Is that so?"

The mayor nods confidently. Father Kieran looks between the three anxiously. "What the Mayor means is that we just want some insurance that this new development isn't going to endanger our city or its inhabitants."

The sheriff looks the three vampires up and down in disgust. "Look, you freaks do your thing, and we'll look the other way. As long as our pockets stay full, we won't have a problem."

Again, feeling the tension in the room rise and watching the exchanged looks between the three, Father Kieran steps forward. "More importantly, there are rules. No feeding on the locals. Don't bring any unwanted attention to the city. History has proven that we can co-exist peacefully. However if you cross the line..."

"You answer to us." The sheriff finishes.

Klaus loudly laughs as he takes this all in. "Okay... I'm sorry, let me get this straight. I'm to play supplicant to this pompous ass and his ridiculous group of petty thieves? Here are my terms: You will take whatever scraps I see fit to leave you, and you will be grateful. If that doesn't suit you, I may decide you've outlived your usefulness."

The three all walk out of the church but can feel Marcel's annoyance at this new development. They decide to take this conversation back to the small bar in the compound. "I think it was far more gracious than they deserved." Klaus tells the two.

Neither men answer but Marcel's glare is plenty opinionated. "You're disappointed by my lack of diplomacy. You out of all people should need no reminder of the human capacity for cruelty." Klaus chuckles.

Klaus rises from the chair to answer his phone. "Hello?"

"Mr. Mikaelson. I just wanted to let you know that the faction's considered your terms. We've reached a decision." The sheriffs voice can be heard on the other side of the phone.

"Have you?" Klaus questions with amusement lacing his tone.

Augustine's eyes darken as a large explosion is heard and then large amounts of gunfire starts to pierce the walls and windows. Due to the window's going chaos ensues as dozens of night walkers seet aflame, dying. Others are shot with wooden bullets. A few even manage to hit Augustine in the stomach.

He grunts as he falls to the floor, watching Marcel and Klaus do the same thing but Klaus shields Marcel with his own body knowing if the man took any more bullets he could die because he was an ordinary vampire.

It lasts mere minutes but every bullet made the vampires that were still alive feel like hours.  And soon enough all that's left is the three men and rotten corpses of the vampires who had not been able to get away.

Marcel's face becomes furious, he flips a table before angrily pointing at Klaus. "Dammit, dammit, dammit! This is on you! Now that you're in charge, these are your guys laying dead. Your guys. You're gonna run this city, that better mean something to you, otherwise no one worth a damn is gonna follow you. No one!"

A slow smile grows on Klaus' face despite what had just occurred. "I was beginning to worry about you. I don't think I could've taken any more of this differential nonsense. I mean, clearly I underestimated the faction. That won't happen again. But, tell me now that we've arrived to this point, now that they have come into our home, visited this upon our people... How would you counsel me to respond?"

Augustine watches Marcel's face become determined. "Let's go kill them all."

Father Kieran arrives to the restaurant, where the human faction is holding a meeting without him. "Why wasn't I consulted on this?" He refers to the humans attack.

The mayor gives him a critical look. "You've been gone for over eight months, Kieran. We got used to doing things on our own."

"This Klaus Mikaelson, I don't care who he is or what the rumors say. He needed to be taught a lesson." The sheriff agrees.

"You are gonna start a war!" The priest warns him making the sheriff scoff. "I'd like to see them try. Oh, and Kieran, this is the last time you call a meeting. Next time you wanna criticize our leadership, send a damn email."

Kieran looks confused but his face slightly pales. "I thought you called this meeting...?"

"The hell we did."

Augustine and Klaus enter the room watching as everyone around the table tenses in anticipation. "Actually, I called it. It appears I made a grave error during our earlier conference. My friend Marcel offered me wise counsel, and I failed to heed it."

The sheriff smirks proudly. "I'm glad to hear you've learned your lesson."

"Humans have certainly evolved haven't they brother?" Augustine questions as he lights a cigarette.

"Oh, they have brother. I won't be making that mistake again." He raised his voice. "Marcel!"

Before any of the humans can comprehend what is happening Marcel speeds in and stabs the sheriff in the neck with a grin. Everyone begins screaming as Klaus and Marcel tear into nearly every human in the vicinity.

By the time they're finished Father Kieran is the only man left standing from the humans side and he looks rattled. "There he is. Our lone survivor. Such a sad day for our city. Some of its best and brightest killed in a tragic boating accident on the Mississippi. Rather nasty explosion, I heard. What am I going to do with you?"

Marcel quickly joins the group with his hands held up. "Okay, hold up. I've known Kieran for a long time. He's smart and he's fair. I think he can do us more good alive than dead. Not to mention he's Cami's uncle." Augustine raises an eyebrow at his brother knowing the priest was now safe from him. "Don't see you care about things much, it's kinda hard not to notice when you do."

"Very well. Use this reprieve to remake your human faction." Klaus makes a hand gesture.

Kieran looks at the three, overwhelmed with what he's expected to do. "And how do you expect me to remake the Mayor?"

"Well, surely there's a deputy Mayor? Choose new leaders. Then we'll re-open negotiations."

Back at the compound, Augustine hears Hayley shouting and regardless of his current turmoil regarding her he follows the sound of her voice and comes across her yelling at his brother. "And as soon as I have this baby, what happens to me then?"

When Klaus says nothing Augustine steps into the room and gives his brother a cold look. "Absolutely nothing."

He and Klaus stare at each other challengingly for a moment before Klaus stands and leaves the room. Leaving the two alone.

"You shouldn't challenge my brother like that." He tells the wolf. "He's a paranoid man, there's no telling what he may do if he feels threatened."

Hayley blinks out of her own thoughts and narrows her eyes at him. "I didn't ask you to step in. I don't need you to protect me out of obligation to the baby."

His eyebrows raise at her attitude. He clicks his tongue in annoyance. "Nonetheless I did. And I didn't do it because of the baby."

She steps closer to him challengingly. "Then why did you do it?"

He stares at her for a moment. "Are you blind?"

She blinks at him in surprise not expecting such a response. "Excuse me?"

"Are. You. That. Blind?" He questions her slowly.

Her face scrunches in distaste and he sighs at her. "I care for you, I'm sure I've been quite obvious despite my reluctance."

He walks away feeling exasperated and she throws her hands in the air. "Obvious?" She questions exaggeratedly.

Lucy passes her as she walks through the hall and then back tracks. "Are you talking to yourself, Hay? Should I get Augustine?"

Hayley glares at her and stomps away mumbling under her breath. Lucy shakes her head looking confused. "Must be baby brain."

She enters her own room and stands on the balcony, reflecting on everything she had gone through in these past few months since her sister got pregnant.

Elijah appears next to her. "Are they..?" She trails off thinking of the wolves.

He smiles softly at her. "They're safe. All of them."

She launches herself at him and hugs him momentarily shocking him. "Thank you. What you did, Elijah, it means a lot."

He notices her crescent moon birthmark and pulls her jumper up to cover it. "You should keep that hidden."

She looks slightly entranced but clears her throat. "I have to ask a question."

He holds his hand out. "I may have an answer."

"My sister.. Am I putting too much trust into Augustine to protect her? And I mean not just physically but her feelings too. I don't want her to get hurt."

Elijah seems to be contemplating his words for a minute. "Rest assured, Ms. Marshall. Augustine will fight for your sister until his last breath. And I think her feelings may be confused but no harm will come from him intentionally. I think he may be just as confused as she."

"How can you be so sure?" She questions.

"I've seen him in love once. I'm not entirely sure if it's a good or a bad thing as of yet, but I do know there is no one who loves as intensely as him. And he has already started to do things for her I haven't seen him do for another in over a thousand years."

"Like..." she trails off questioningly.

"Like stand against our brother for her sake."

Augustine raises an eyebrow at his little brother when he sees him in the hallway. "Done sneaking around now, are you?"

Elijah ignores his comment, looking sincere as he speaks his next words. "I wanted to apologize for my accusations against you regarding your child in the Bayou, I was wrong."

"I expected no less of you, truth be told." Augustine watches as he shifts from foot to foot seemingly nervous or maybe slightly anxious. "You have always wished for the best but expected the worst from Nik and I. That hasn't changed because I am having a child."

He slightly narrows his eyes in response. "Neither of you have made it easy to love you."

"You need not continue to apologize for your transgressions. It did not hurt my feelings. In return, keep me out of your quest for our brother's redemption, will you?" He tells him bluntly before walking away.

It was the next day and Augustine appears in the doorway of Hayley's room. Watching as she stands in front of the mirror trying to fasten the zipper on a wedding dress she had found in one of Rebekah's chests. "Help?" She questions him as she notices him behind her.

"Of course." He emotionlessly responds. He holds part of the dress down with one hand dangerously low on her back while the other brushes the skin on her back as he grabs the zipper. Her eyes flutter closed as she feels his breathing on her neck. "Thanks. Not too many pregnant Casket Girls, I guess." She whispers as she meets his eyes in the mirror."

"You're perfect." He stares at her making her whole face blush. Her eyes fall to the crescent shaped birthmark on her shoulder. "I should prob-" As she moves to cover it with her hand he grabs it and lowers her hand back to her side. "Don't. No one will touch you, regardless of that mark. I swear it."

She briefly wonders if the night prior was his way of confessing his feelings for her as he had never been so open with her before this. She sighs as she faces the mirror again. She rests her hands on her growing stomach. "All knocked up and nowhere to go." She sighs.

Augustine takes a step closer to her, his chest touching her back. "May I?"

Her eyes flicker to his hands hovering over her stomach and she weakly nods. He surprises her by placing both hands on her stomach, she watches the both of them in the mirror, unable to get the thought of them being one family out of her head. It was a perfect sight to anyone who would see them. His breath slightly hitches in her ear, feeling an unfamiliar sensation stir in his chest. "If you want to go to to the festival, ask me."

"Ask you?" She questions shyly.

"I told you before you could ask me for anything in the world." He quietly yet plainly tells her.

She looks to the ground. "We shouldn't rock the boat with Klaus after last night."

"I'll flip the boat if I need to." He tells her nonchalantly. When he notices her doubt he releases his hands from her stomach and takes a step back. "Very well then. But if you change your mind.."

She nods and gestures to the zipper. He slowly undoes it and then disappears from the room leaving her with a small smile.

Augustine enters the living room seeing a stressed Klaus and Marcel discussing the newest predicament. "You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to know the obvious. Our secret weapon has escaped."

Marcel shakes his head in denial. "She wouldn't just leave. She knows the witches want her back."

Elijah joins the three after having checked her room. "Her violin is missing. She may have left of her own volition."

Marcel starts marching towards him with an accusing tone of voice. "What did you say to her in the attic? She lied to my face so she could stay up there, thinking that you'd help her control her magic. How do we know you didn't take her?"

"I have no idea where Davina is, or why she ran away." Elijah says, he gives him a look of distaste. "Can I suggest you take a step back? I can assure you I have absolutely no desire to see that child come into harm's way. She's suffered enough with this Harvest ritual nonsense."

"That child, to whom you refer to so affectionately, is the most powerful witch in New Orleans. If she's fled, what's to stop her from destroying us? In fact, destroying all we've worked for? No, if she's not a friend to this family, then she is our enemy." Klaus declares and Augustine looks up in annoyance. "Niklaus, you think everyone is this families enemy. She is a teenage girl."

"Well, let's hope so. Lucky for you, I know how to get her back. Follow my lead." He leaves the room. Marcel moves to follow him when Elijah stops the two. "You know how Niklaus operates. If he perceives a threat, he can become quite ruthless. This would not bode well for Davina."

"I'm not going to let anybody lay a finger on her." Marcel defensively says."Nor will I."

Meanwhile, in the courtyard Hayley, Lucy, and Rebekah are rifling through some old chests of clothing to see if there was anything fitting for Casket day.

"So the witch is missing, huh?" Hayley questions curiously.

"Walked right out of the front door, apparently. Know anything about it?" Rebekah questions the two knowing they were always getting into trouble.

Hayley shakes her head but notices Lucy's nervous expression. "Luce?"

"I did tell her that the witch Elders were dead..." She trails off. Rebekah raises an eyebrow at her. "Well, why would she care, when the witches tried to kill her in their ritual?"

"I think it was more that Marcel didn't tell her that the one thing preventing her from being free had been eliminated."

"So you are the reason she's run off." Rebekah accuses but she's not exactly upset. Lucy holds her hands up in defense. "Hey, I was just telling her the truth. She's the one who realized they were just using her to keep their control over the witches. I felt bad for her."

Rebekah sighs. "Yeah well, I've never been a fan of the boys club. Just wait, Elijah will join them and the three of them will be impossible."

"You mean the four of them?" Lucy questions.

Rebekah side eyes Hayley. "That brother of mine has been taking his own path these days. I can't quite yet guess where it's going to lead him though. Either way, us girls have got to stick together."

Hayley later interestedly watches her sister attempt to shake their vampire bodyguards by telling them she needs to speak to her Gyno. When the vampires scrunch their face up and speed away she takes her chance to follow her sister into the garage and holds her ear up to the door.

"What the hell do you want? Figured that out on your own, huh? Remind me again why I should give a damn?" Hayley's face scrunches in confusion as to who she could be talking to. "What do you know about my family?"

After hearing this she opens the door just as her sister hangs up the phone looking conflicted.

"Who was that?" Hayley crosses her arms and questions.

Lucy jumps in shock having not realized her sister had witnessed the whole thing. "Hay..."

"Kieran is gonna call me first if he hears anything." Marcel tells the two brothers as they stand in the middle of bourbon street. The festival was in full swing and Augustine can't help but think of how he would rather be anywhere aside from with with brothers and Marcel searching for a missing witch.

"You all look rather cozy." Klaus looks at the three skeptically.

"Hardly. I was just telling Elijah how we're wasting time." Marcel easily lies. Rebekah appears and Klaus raises an eyebrow. "Sister, come to help us find our stray?"

She gives him a sarcastic smile. "We can't let your secret weapon get in the wrong hands, can we?"

"For the record, we're moments away from retrieving her."

Now it's Augustine's turn to give him a look of skepticism. "I recognize that tone of voice, Niklaus. Clearly you have some diabolical machination. What is it?" Elijah demands. He doesn't answer but catches sight of a teenage boy walking towards his car nearby.

Upon seeing who it was Augustine recognizes him from the last time Klaus had attempted to threaten Davina. "Bloody hell."

Knowing there was no stopping him, the three men follow him back to the compound where he brings the teenage human boy, Timothy.

"Where's Rebekah gotten off to?" Klaus questions when he realizes she was gone.

"Don't worry about, Rebekah." Augustine tells him. "Do you remember the last time time you tried this with her. It didn't end well for you."

Klaus waives him off. "This is different."

"Are the maudlin theatrics absolutely necessary, Niklaus?" Elijah sighs as he observes Timothy sitting on the railing of the balcony.

Klaus laughs. "Ha! It's a fair point. Timothy, play something a little more upbeat, please. That's a good lad. Took you long enough to spread the word." His last sentence is pointed towards Marcel who walks in.

"All that matters is I got it covered. When Davina gets here, you three need to let me do the talking." Marcel tells them.

"Well, I'm sure you'll have your chance." Klaus mumbles as he hears Davina's footsteps enter. "Hello, love."

Timothy looks at the girl confused. "Davina?"

"You got me here. Now let him down." She demands but Klaus wasn't having it. "Well, first, we have to have a little chat about you returning to the fold."

Marcel looks to Klaus in annoyance.  "What did I say, Klaus? I got this. D, what happened? Why'd you run? Talk to me. Hey, I can make it right." She looks at him appalled. "How, by threatening my friend?"

Augustine leans against a nearby beam and finishes up his cigarette as he observes the scene playing out before him. He doesn't see this ending well whatsoever. Klaus smiles and raises his hand. "Actually, that was my idea. Apologies. I've been known to go too far to make a point, But I do always get results."

Her face becomes rageful. "You pretend to be so confident, but I know the truth. You're afraid everyone can see what you really are...an animal." She starts casting a pain infliction spell on the man and it brings him to his knees. Augustine straightens. "A beast. Why don't you show us your real face? That's enough of you." She snaps his neck.

Elijahs steps forward with concern. "Davina, you don't have to do this."

Her eyes narrow on him. "You! You looked me in the eyes and lied to my face. Pretended you wanted to help me.""Listen to me-""You call yourself the noble one, but you're a killer just like your brother. For 1,000 years, you've fed on innocent blood. Why don't you choke on it?" Elijah suddenly begins throwing up blood and choking on the sheer amount of it he was expelling. He slowly falls unconscious.

She looks to Augustine and afraid the man wouldn't hesitate to kill her Marcel steps in front of her. Before he can even try to console her she yells at him. "And you! I trusted you. I loved you, but you were just using me to stay in power. You don't care about me."

"You're wrong." He pleads.

"When you lost to Klaus, you handed me over like some trophy. Maybe I should boil you in bronze."

"I care. I took you in like you were my own blood." Before anything else can happen he's stabbed in the chest with an iron poker, forcing him to fall unconscious.

"Come on now, love. Don't tell me you were falling for that. Isn't it time for us girls to have a chat?" Rebekah tells the girl.

Augustine shakes his head at her. "You always look for too much trouble, sister."

She looks to him with a raised eyebrow. "Are you going to stop me?"

"Funny how you seem to always be whining about me looking the other way towards our brother's actions and you'd now like me to do the same to you." He tilts his head at her.

She turns away from him choosing to pretend he wasn't there. Soon enough she's convinced Josh and Davina to follow her and in turn save Timothy. He awaits for the men to wake up, briefly wondering if he should check in with the two women he had left earlier but decides against it. It can wait. He's thrown a lot at Hayley these last few days and he knew she was confused. Truth be told he was confused.

As the men start waking up he notices the dried blood they were all covered in.

"Well, isn't this monumentally awkward." Elijah sighs.

Klaus pulls his phone from his pocket and answers his sisters call. "Rebekah, where are you?"I'm with Davina, and she's dying because of your treachery."

Augustine looks to his brother in disappointment.

"Well, I tried to talk to her, out of respect for Marcel, but she made it quite clear she is not our friend. My apologies if you thought she was yours." He says avoiding the three mens eyes. "Just tell me how to cure her. Vampire blood isn't working." He purses his lips. "No. It wouldn't. You see, the poison I compelled Timothy to feed her is quite potent. It's just a matter of time for her."

"For both of them, you diabolical bastard. They're children. We could've dealt with her fairly."

"There is no dealing with those who threaten us. Davina sealed her fate when she stood against me. This was her choice, not mine." He hangs up the phone and finally looks at all of the men who stared back at him with varying expressions. "Oh, come on. The stench of your judgment is overwhelming. Need I remind you that Davina just bested the lot of us? I did what had to be done. Don't worry, Elijah. I remain as redeemable as ever."

"So you compelled that boy to poison Davina without consulting Marcel or myself. I am guessing Augustine was left out of the loop as well this time." Elijah responds.

"You know what the worst part is? It's that you're so predictable, I had to make an alliance with your brothers, who I don't even like." Marcel scoffs, only slightly enjoying Klaus' face becoming a lot less amused.

"Judging by your expression, you have something you'd like to share."

"Damn straight, I do. I got a call from Kieran earlier, right after Sabine and some witches almost got their hands on Davina first." He goes on to explain that they had placed a protection spell on the teenager after realizing how may people were truly after her.

"So, when you slipped away to allegedly check on your night walkers, you were, in fact, colluding with a witch. That's very clever. I suppose I should be proud."

"Eh, I just wanted to make sure I had a fail-safe just in case, as Elijah expected, you started acting like you." He snaps.

"Except that now you've involved the witches, who, last time I checked, were enemy to us all, to everything we have, and to our family." Klaus argues with him and Augustine sighs at his brothers cluelessness. "That girl is Marcel's family, Niklaus. And you just tried killing her because of your agenda."

"You will call Rebekah. You'll tell her that Davina will recover. I do wish the same could be said for that boy." Elijah walks off.
