III.

Rebekah pouts. "I cannot believe you disposed of those vampires without me. You know how I love to set things on fire!"

Klaus smirks. "Was I supposed to leave them in the front yard to rot? Besides, they were Augustine's responsibility. They attacked the helpless pregnant girl who's carrying his child! I was simply tasked to take care of it from our dear brother."

"Oh, I am so moved by Augustine seemingly discovering some type of emotion towards the werewolf with a bun in her oven." She subtly teases her brother who rolls his eyes sticking a cigarette in his mouth. Hayley and Lucy start descending the stairs and he sighs taking the cigarette right back out of his mouth and stuffing it back into his pocket. Rebekah and Klaus both raise an eyebrow at this but don't speak on it.

"The werewolf would like to know what the plan is." Hayley announces.

"Well, that depends what plan you mean, love. My plan for global domination, Augustine's plan to move to a remote island or Rebekah's plan to find love in a cruel, cruel world?" Klaus pokes fun at his siblings.

Rebekah takes a pencil from the desk beside her and throws it in Klaus' direction. Klaus catches it easily before it can embed itself in his face but misses the pencil Augustine had thrown that lands in his arm. He grunts and gives his brother the evil eye as he yanks it out.

Lucy winces at the action and nearly stomps her foot. "The plan to rescue Elijah. You know, the good brother? The one who is now in the possession of your mortal enemy after you stabbed him in the back?"

Klaus smirks. "In the front, if we're being specific."

"You three said that you would get him back. So is there a plan, or what?" Hayley questions.

"Okay. Well, firstly, Marcel is not my mortal enemy. He's my friend. Albeit one who is unaware that I'm trying to sabotage his hold over the supernatural community of the French Quarter, but a friend nonetheless. And secondly, I daggered Elijah in order to gain Marcel's trust."

"What my brother means is If he had known he would place my brother in the hands of a particularly powerful and angry teenage witch, he certainly would have weighed his options a bit better." Augustine tells the two.

"And thirdly, the plan, as you have demanded, is for Niklaus to simply ask Marcel for Elijah back." Rebekah bitterly smiles at the two.

Hayley and Lucy eye the three with distrust.

"I'm sorry, did you just say you're going to ask for him back?" Lucy gapes.

"Please! Klaus may be a miserable excuse for a sibling, but there is none more diabolical." Rebekah scoffs.

"And that's only the Plan A, love!" Klaus beams looking particularly excited.

"And what is plan B?" Hayley questions reluctantly.

"War." Augustine responds to her, staring her in the eyes in the same way that always makes her nervous.

"Look, I know you and Klaus are friends, but the fact is, since the Originals showed up-"

Klaus and Augustine enter the room stopping the man from finishing his sentence. "Oh, come now, Thierry. You're not still upset about that little, toxic werewolf bite I gave you, are you? I thought we were at bygones." Klaus smiles mischievously.

The vampire turns toward Marcel with an unimpressed look on his face. "I see you've given them free rein of your compound now, too."

"Well we did live here once upon a time, Thierry is it?" Augustine stares at the man making him shift from side to side some what nervously.

"All right. Come on. You both know the drill. Thierry's my guy, inner circle. Klaus is my old-time friend and sire. Augustine is his brother. They are also guests here. Peace, all right? All right." He tells the vampire before turning back to the two. "What you need, my brother?"

Klaus dramatically sighs playing his part. "I'm afraid my sister Rebekah is insisting I demand Elijah's return. She's quite worked up about it."

Marcel's eyes shift questioningly to Augustine. "My sister sent me with him to ensure he actually asks." He plainly responds.

Thierry scoffs. "We're not gonna have four Originals walking around town, are we? Half our guys think the sister killed the night walkers."

"Come on. Walk with me." Marcel gestures them away from the man and brings them to the balcony."You inner circle man lacks a sense of humor." Klaus tells him.

Marcel shrugs with a proud look dawning his face."He's a little overprotective, but loyal to a fault. I saved his life back in the '40s, found him dying of a war wound outside a hospital. He'd kill for me and die for me. Plus, that boy can play the trumpet like you would not believe. Maybe I'll see if he can play a little tonight at the party. You're coming, right?"

"How can I miss my chance to meet the city councilman as he accepts your gigantic charitable donation?" Klaus jokes.

"Oh, he's a schmuck, but he lets us do our thing in exchange for certain community services, like keeping our fangs out of the locals. Listen, about your brother... I would love to help you out, but Thierry is right. My guys are on edge. They see the Original family moving in, vampires dying? It makes them nervous. If I hand Elijah back now, it might give the wrong impression about who's really in charge here. You know what I mean?" He smiles.

Augustine's jaw clenches as does Klaus' but he forces a smile on his face knowing the previous wouldn't. "You understand, I had to ask."

Augustine walks toward the study to meet his siblings as they had told him they had the Deveraux witch in the home with an update on their latest problem. He stops in his tracks as he notices Hayley and Lucy leaning towards the closed door attempting to eavesdrop.

He clears his throat making Lucy jump and hit her head on a picture frame. Hayley's face becomes a bright red at being caught as she fumbles over her words trying to come up with an explanation.

Augustine walks so close to the woman she can feel his breath on her face. He leans forward making her heart nearly beat out of her chest and she raises her head to meet his eyes. They're all still for a moment until he opens the door, revealing that's why he had gotten so close. "Join us." He lowly tells her.

Her eyes unwillingly flicker to his lips for a moment and in attempts to save her sister from her embarrassing actions, Lucy grips her hand and yanks her into the room.

Rebekah's eyes dart to the three watching as amusement flickers over her brothers face and Hayley and Lucy quickly dart to an empty loveseat.

"Are you out of your mind?" Sophie shouts. "No way."

Rebekah's eyes return to the witch. "It's very simple. We need you to perform a teeny, tiny locator spell to help us find our brother."

"Witches who practice magic in this town get caught, and then they get killed." Sophie denies.

"Yes, about that. It seems you left out a crucial detail when we made our deal. Marcel's secret weapon, the way he knows when a witch is using magic...Girl about yea high, cute as a button, anger issues?" Rebekah finishes.

They all watch as Sophie's eyes widen with a sense of urgency. "Davina? Where have you seen her?"

His sister scoffs. "I don't know. The little brat erased my memory right after she threw me out a window with her bloody mind."

"Let's make this simple, aye?" Augustine leans back in the chair and slightly spreads his legs making Hayley nearly drool at the sight. Lucy nudges her sister with her elbow making the wolf cough knowing she was caught. When she looks back at the man he was already staring at her with a raised eyebrow. He looks toward Sophie who looks slightly star struck herself. "Correct me if I am wrong. The french quarter witches want this teenage witch, Davina, away from Marcel. You don't know where to find her. Therefor you need magic."

"Davina would sense it." The witch explains.

A small smirk forms on Rebekah's face. "Unless, of course, another witch say, a traitor to the cause, Katie for example was to perform much more powerful magic at the same time. That would create a smokescreen, concealing your very small spell from Davina."

"Katie doesn't deserve to die." The witch argues against using her friend for leverage.

Klaus angrily slams his hands on the table and stands up to get closer to to the witch making Lucy and Hayley both jump. Augustine's eyes flicker towards both girls.

"Sophie Deveraux! You're in no position to be so principled. You can't win a war without a few strategic losses, no matter how regrettable they may be. How many times have the vampires been one step ahead, known something they shouldn't? Your sister, executed in the public square for practicing magic.. who knew she'd be caught? Did she even attempt to flee?"

Sophie's eyes slowly widen looking stunned. "She was caught hiding in a cargo hold of a freighter before it set sail down the Mississippi."

"And who in Marcel's inner circle manages the docks?" Augustine slowly questions as if she were stupid for not realizing it sooner. His siblings had caught him up to speed earlier in the day about the two star crossed lovers and he immediately found something weird about it.

Sophie sighs feeling resigned. "Katie's boyfriend, Thierry."

Sophie, Klaus, and Rebekah quickly leave the room to enact their plan after Rebekah forces her brother to promise to attend the party Marcel was throwing to help Klaus with his end of the plan.

Lucy quickly scurries out of the room to leave both of the to be parents alone.

"You needn't eavesdrop you know?" He tells her. "I hide nothing from you."

"I.." She opens her mouth to respond before closing it, unsure of what to say to him. "I'm not sure where Lucy and I stand in all of this."

"Your place in this family was cemented the moment you became pregnant with my child." He bluntly tells her. Unbeknownst to either of them, both of their minds flash to their one night stand in Mystic Falls. "This all involves you as much as it does anyone else in this family. I believe you have a right to know."

"And if you didn't want me to know?" She boldly questions.

He blankly stares at her. "Then you wouldn't know."

She nods her head with pursed lips, getting up to leave the room.

"But I do."

She turns back to him confused.

He looks to the ground for a moment before meeting her eyes again. "I want you to know. Everything. Anything you want to know, just ask."

A small smile grows on her face and she leaves the room.

Augustine pulls out a cigarette from his pocket once he's made sure she's at least on the other side of the house and lights it, taking a deep inhale of the smoke.

Augustine and Rebekah enter the party, arm in arm, attempting not to lift their noses at the wild atmosphere. Both are dressed in all black, only Rebekah entertaining the masquerade theme with a small mask. There were dancers handling exotic animals, acrobats, and confetti falling upon all the guests.

"Well, this certainly is a fitting backdrop for tonight's events, I must say." Klaus muses as he joins the three. His siblings seem to spot something and he trails his eyes around the compound trying to spot it. Rebekah seems almost smug but Klaus' face falls a tiny bit.

"What's she doing here?" Klaus questions.

Rebekah gleefully smiles. "What better way to distract Marcel than to put his very human new girl in a room chock full of vampires?"

Rebekah struts away from the two to greet a blonde. Augustine raises an eyebrow. "I am missing something." He plainly states. Klaus rolls his eyes. "If you ever paid attention you would know. The blonde is someone our dear Marcel is smitten with."

He observes his brother's slightly bitter tone. "It appears he isn't the only one."

Klaus glares at him and ushers him along to the blondes to make sure Rebekah wasn't being too mean.

"This party is ridiculous, but I think I went a bit splashy with this dress." The blonde nervously tells Rebekah. She turns towards the two men who have just joined them. Her eyes draw towards Augustine's and she slightly blushes, he doesn't even smile. "Is he the infamous on-again/off-again?"

Augustine shakes his head and lazily responds. "I'm the brother."

"So it must be him." She points her eyes toward Klaus who smiles. "Wrong again, he is also the brother and my sister is right. You do look stunning."

"You clean up pretty well yourself." She smiles.

"You two chit-chat. I need booze. Augustine, accompany me?" She offers her arm. Wanting to be anywhere besides next to his brother while he flirts he takes her arm in his own and leads her to the bar.

"Scotch, please. And he'll have a whiskey." She tells the bartender. Marcel is quick to spot the two and quickly joins them making Rebekah sigh. "You trying to be cute, inviting her here?"

"I think she's darling. I can tell you fancy her pure heart. Perhaps I'll feed it to you?" Rebekah smiles.

"Hmm. Jealousy looks good on you, Bekah." He teases.

Augustine grabs the whiskey the bartender places down and downs it in one shot, unwilling to listen to either of his siblings flirt he quickly steps outside and holds his phone up to his ear.

"Um, hello?"

"Lucy." Augustine shortly greets.

"Augustine! How the heck did you get my phone number?"

"I needed to check in with one of you, everything is okay at the house?" He ignores her questions.

"Uh, yes. Everything is the same as when you left it an hour ago." She answers him with an odd tone. "So, why didn't you just call my sister?"

"I figured she wasn't the type to answer unknown phone numbers." He states.

"And I am?" She huffs, slightly offended.

He doesn't answer, giving her a moment to realize their current predicament.

She groans. "Don't even. Do you want to speak to my sister?"

Augustine is silent.

"Augustine?"

He shakes his head at himself. "No, Lucy. Thank you, resume your night."

"Wai-"

He hangs up the phone and closes his eyes for a moment to take a deep breath.

Augustine joins his brother's side again just in time for Rebekah to leave. Diego has just explained to Marcel what Thierry did in regards to him 'stealing the daylight ring spell.'

They watch as Marcel stomps toward Thierry, away from Cami,  and grabs him by the throat  pushing him away from the party.

"Where did you run off to?" Klaus questions his brother.

Augustine doesn't take his eyes off of the scene in front of him, Camille watching Marcel's apparent anger issues at play. "Nowhere of your concern."

The vampire that Klaus had compelled to do their bidding walks up to the two and discreetly grabs a folded piece of paper from Klaus. They then watch as Camille solemnly leaves the party and the vampire brings the paper to Marcel's attention with claims of finding it in his home.

"Still my friend, huh? That's funny, because it looks to me like that little witch of yours got her hands on a spell that I keep locked away." Marcel rages.

"Marcel, I have never seen that."

"Shut up. I see on your hand, you still have the daylight ring I gave you. So, what would you need with the recipe for making new ones? Unless maybe you and Katie were gonna go off and start a little kingdom of your own?" Marcel shouts, genuinely hurt. "Here's a lesson in friendship, friends don't lie to me, they don't break my rules, and they do not steal what is mine. Ohh... For the crime of murdering one of his own, I sentence Thierry Vanchure to one hundred years in the Garden."

"And it begins..." Klaus whispers to his brother with a proud smirk

They both follow along as Marcel and a group of his vampires lead Thierry out of the party and into the streets. They all pause as the witch, Katie, approaches looking vengeful. She begins chanting. "Donn moi se la vroh kondu feh aila ra donn toi moi. Donn moi. Salacku tusdeh do. Vala."

Thierry watches her desperately. "Katie, no!"

She ignores him. She waives her arm making a street lamps light explode above them and all of the surrounding vampires fall to their knee's in pain. Marcel somehow rises back up to face her but she continues exerting more power making him fall back down.

Augustine watches from the shadows feeling slightly impressed with the teenage witch he knew was responsible for giving Marcel the power to get back up. "You're here to save your man. Well, come on, little girl!"

He runs to attack her but she's able to halt him with her magic again. He kneels to the ground groaning in pain. Just as she's about to stake him Klaus swoops in and snaps her neck.

Augustine's expression doesn't change but he shakes his head at his brother and disappears from the scene to return home. They all had just massively wasted their time for no reason.

Upon returning home he notices his sister sitting at the piano looking seldom. " Well, tonight was an epic failure."

"For us, I suppose." Augustine mutters as he hangs his jacket up.

Rebekah stands with her eyes narrowed on her brother. "What does that bloody mean."

"It means sister, that everything went according to plan. Until Niklaus decided to kill Katie."

Her eyes widen looking furious. "What did you just say?"

"He will be home soon, i'll leave him to you." He tells her a he begins his trek up the stairs.

"When do you not?" She shouts but goes ignored.

Noticing one of the study lights on Augustine slowly opens the door and realizes it was Hayley typing on his laptop. His lip quirks up for only a second. "Good evening."

"Hey." She slightly sits up from the chair.

"Tonight didn't go the way we would have wanted it, but I think it's safe to tell Lucy that my brother, Elijah, will be returning to us soon." He informs her and she nods her head.

"Why would I need to tell Lucy?"

"I think she.. fancies my brother?" He sounds questionable. "I believe they still call it that these days, yes?"

Hayley covers her mouth in attempts to hide her amused smile. "No, we do not call it that these days. But thank you."

He nods his head. "How are you finding your new living arrangements?"

"I sleep a lot better now that it's not a hundred degrees." She jokes and then her face softens as she remembers how she got there. "Thank you."

He stares at her for a moment, his mouth opening and then closing before he turns around to leave again.

"Hey, I learned something today. I think it's a girl." She smiles at him as she rubs her tiny stomach that had slowly began to pop.

He turns around, she notices his eyes look slightly lighter. "A girl." She nods in confirmation and he looks at her quizzically. "How do you know?"

She bites her lip, something he immediately notices, and hesitates before answering. "Sabine. She did some kind of remedy that she said could tell her what gender the baby is."

He quickly enters the room again and kneels before her placing his ear on her stomach. Feeling stunned she freezes as she tries to process what was happening. "August?"

He doesn't move for a few moments but she notices his tense shoulders slightly sag in relief. He looks up at her looking as serious as he sounded. "What was she doing here? I called Lucy earlier to make sure everything was alright and she said it was. Had I of known one of the witches came here I would have came right home. What was it that she did? The baby's heartbeat is still there so I know she's alive but you must tell me right now what she did."

"It's okay." She places a hand on his shoulder as he's still kneeled in front of her. She quickly removes her hand as she feels him tense and his face briefly falls in regret before he masks it. "No magic was involved. They can't preform magic, remember?"

"Am I interrupting something?" Lucy stares wide eyed between the two.

She had come to see if her sister found anything in translation to what the witch had said earlier and instead found the blue eyed Mikaelson kneeled in front of her sister as they both stared into each others eyes.

Augustine clears his throat and quickly stands, moving to leave the room. "No. Goodnight."

Lucy waits until the coast is clear before she quickly closes the door and gives her sister a wide eyed look. "What was that?"

Hayley sighs, thinking about what just happened. She's witnessed these small moments of tender emotion from the blue eyed Mikaelson since arriving at the plantation and then the next moment it's as if she's a stranger. She was confused, she knew from Mystic Falls rumors and even small comments his own family has made that he didn't care for much or show much emotion and she wasn't sure what to make of his actions. "I don't know. I told him that I found out it was a girl."

"And he did... Whatever that was?" Lucy looks unconvinced.

"He asked how I knew and I told him that Sabine stopped by for a visit." She looks away from her sisters deploring eyes.

"Great! Then he can help us figure out what she said before she bolted out of here." She smiles though it slowly drops when she doesn't receive a response. "Hay! You didn't tell him did you?"

"You should have seen him when I even told him she was here." She throws her hands out. "I think he spoke more then than the entire time i've known him."

"Maybe he has a right to be worried." Lucy gives her a pointed look. Hayley sighs seeing her point before changing the subject. "He said Elijah will be coming home soon."

"Pft, why would I care?" Lucy leans against a shelf, she slightly trips and catches herself looking embarrassed.

Hayley raises an eyebrow and smiles at her little sister. "Well, August seems to think you 'fancy' him."

"Oh god, he said that?" Lucy gapes and Hayley nods. "What does Augustine know about anything?" She groans before storming out of the room.
