II.

Hayley and Augustine enter the courtyard to see the dinner table filled to the brim with delicious breakfast foods and croissants. She gives him a questioning look. "This was not my doing."

Klaus joins the two and Hayley gives him a sarcastic smile. "So, which restaurant's missing a compelled chef?"

Klaus looks confused. "It's certainly a card I've played in the past, but I had no hand in this..."

"Maybe it was Elijah then?" Lucy questions as she comes down the stairs looking eager to dig in.

"This wasn't my doing." The man in question tells the bunch.

"Then, where did this all come from?" Hayley questions seconds before a silver lid begins rattling. All of them jump in surprise and Augustine yanks the woman behind him as Klaus lifts the lid.

Two starling fly from the plate up to the ceiling rattling everyone.

"What the hell was that?" Lucy screeches.

Augustine snatches the small envelope from the platter and holds it up to read. "Dinner. Your home, 8 PM."

Hayley lays against Augustine's bed where she had been sleeping for countless nights as he leans against the balcony smoking a cigarette. "It is times like this I'm really glad I never knew my mother."

"I highly doubt your mother could ever reach Esther's wretchedness. Our fight has shifted from werewolves to my family." He sighs.

"Your wretched mother and her disciples tried to put a carving knife through our babies hearts. I will happily add to the body count." She states in complete seriousness. He gives her a stern look. "No, my love, you leave her to my brothers and I. Remember, she can switch bodies whenever she likes. It's not worth putting your life in danger over."

"She-"

He walks over and yanks her to the edge of the bed making her gasp. He leans over her giving her another look. "Will you listen to me, just this once?"

She stares into his eyes noticing how serious he was but also the flicker of fear for her wellbeing.

Realizing he may not get a response from her now he backs away, bringing her to her feet. "Come on, Niklaus needs my help setting up the compound for dinner."

They join the man again in the dining room as he's speaking with the caterers. "Skip the salad course. Let's not make this dreadful evening any longer than it needs to be."

"So, I guess letting Oliver live paid off. He just informed me your mother has a partner-in-crime... another witch." Hayley waves her phone in the air.

"Building alliances in her quest to destroy us, I imagine." Klaus scoffs.

"Why does she hate you both so much? She had seven kids, it's not like she doesn't have the maternal gene." Hayley looks between the two confused.

"Eight children actually." Augustine rubs her back noticing even more confusion flooding her face.

"And, I think at one time, she loved us very much." Klaus tells her looking slightly anxious. "One died before I was born. Years later, my brother Henrik was killed by the werewolves in our village. The loss of another child pushed my mother over the edge. So, she used her magic to turn us into immortals. I think that's when she loved us the most. But, it was her undoing. It triggered a sequence of events that led to the reveal of her long-held secret. Our birth father was the werewolf whose pack killed my little brother. Of course, when Mikael found out, he murdered my real father, and so, my mother lost her lover, too."

Hayley looks stunned. "Wow. No wonder she's crazy. I'm out of my mind having just given away Hope and Alec... I can't imagine if they'd actually died."

Klaus looks slightly teary eyed. "You know, my siblings used to tell each other she didn't hate us, she hated herself for what we've become. I think they believed that even after she tried to kill us all."

"What did you believe?" Hayley questions him.

"I don't know. I just knew I wanted her dead."

Hayley gives him a reassuring smile. "Well, every good story needs a wicked witch. It'll be all the more satisfying when we melt her."

He smiles at her appreciatively and leaves the room. Meanwhile Augustine watches Lucy wordlessly leave to her bedroom with a blank face. Hayley nudges him. "You should talk to her."

"She blames me for her death." He mutters as he looks away from her.

Hayley gently grabs his forearm. "I think we all needed someone to blame for that night, sadly hers was you."

"If blaming someone eases the burden on her then i'll happily take it." He quietly says before walking away. Hayley watches him from behind with a small frown knowing how close the two were before the sisters were brutally killed.

The Mikaelson trio are finishing up the final decor on the table when Finn in Vincent's body struts in. "You three haven't changed a bit. Linens and silk to disguise your pathetic self-loathing."

"Forgive me, I don't believe I've had the pleasure." Elijah gives him a look of confusion as he eyes the man up and down.

The man feigns offense. "Oh, you mean you don't recognize me? So much for the unbreakable bonds of family, huh? Always and forever indeed."

Augustine scoffs with a cigarette hanging from his lips. "I recognize that self loathing anywhere. Hello, Finn."

Finn smirks and spreads his arms out wide. "Now that the introductions are out of the way, let's eat!"

Augustine sighs quietly to himself, sharing a look with Klaus, and takes a seat at the table as Elijah pours Finn a glass of wine. The man mockingly sniffs the liquid. "What an aromatic bordot."

"Well, it was a challenge to find a good pairing. What wine goes well with treachery?" Elijah sarcastically remarks.

Finn scoffs. "Don't pout, brother. Tonight is meant to be a happy occasion!"

"What exactly are we celebrating?" Klaus questions suspiciously.

Finn looks at him as if it were obvious. "Why, my return, of course! Remember, I spent nine hundred years lying daggered in a box. I'm rather enjoying this new body. Strolling about your lovely city that, uh, you've made your home. But, do tell me, what'd I miss? Regale me with your contributions to society! Medicine? Philosophy? Art?"

Klaus rolls his eyes and Augustine pours himself his second glass of wine knowing he would need it if he had to continue listening to his brother.

"Or, have you three merely cut a path of destruction across time?" Finn questions.r

"The last time we saw you, dear brother of ours, you were aiding our mother in our families death." Augustine blandly comments. Two maids begin setting two more placemats along the table making all of them grow weary. "More guests?"

Finn gestures at the other end of the table. "Mother will sit at the head. And, as for the seat across from me, that's reserved for another of our clan. Care to wager an educated guess? How about a paranoid one?"

"Well, there's no way Kol would listen to anything other than his ego." Klaus waives him off.

"And yet, our mother has made such a compelling argument that even he, the wildest of us Mikaelsons, has seen the error of his ways and accepted his new form with vigor! Change, dear brothers, is inevitable." Finn proclaims and Augustine rolls his eyes at how ridiculous the man sounded.

"You would dare face us as a mortal? The only thing inevitable is your death." Klaus chuckles as he throws a knife towards the man whom deflects it with his magic. He yanks it out of the chair it had embedded itself into and smiles. "I suppose the honor of carving should go to the oldest. We have much to discuss."

"I'm rather enjoying my evening." Finn tells the three as he takes another sip of his wine.

Klaus' face scrunches in frustration. "Well, I'd rather enjoy you getting to the point."

"I had nine hundred years to learn to be patient. Although, I am curious why you kept me daggered in a box for so long."

"Bloody hell, not this again." Augustine pinches the bridge of his nose before pulling out his fifth cigarette of the dinner.

"You were daggered for being an ever-simpering sycophant. Did Mother bring you back from the dead so you could wash her knickers?" Klaus smirks in amusement.

"She raised me because I was treated unfairly! Cheated of all but the smallest portion of my life!" Finn angrily tells the three. He turns to Elijah. "Elijah, I can understand such cruelty coming from those two. But I always thought of you as being the compassionate one! What did I do to deserve you turning your back on me? Were you afraid of Niklaus and Augustine? Are you still?"

Elijah purses his lips and doesnt respond prompting him to continue. "Or perhaps jealousy is what kept me locked in a box? You coveted the duties of the eldest brother seeing as Augustine was emotionally unavailable, in which case you had near-on a millennium to fix the problems of this family, and instead, produced nine centuries of failure."

Elijah waits a moment to collect his thoughts before responding. "You might reside somewhat parasitically, I might add in another body, but I assure you, in nine hundred years, your tedious sentiments remain quite the same. You see, Finn, like Father, you've always despised our supernatural existence. Father, of course, slaughtered and consumed his own, whereas you became pretentious and dull... much like this meal. I will not ask you again, where is Mother?

Augustine's glare shifts towards the compound entrance as light footsteps appear. The harvest witch Cassie or as they know is now Esther enters the room. "My darling sons."

"Why don't you say what you came here to say, so this wretched night can end?" Klaus harshly demands.

"It pains me that you all look at me with such disdain. I wish you could see that my every action has been to protect you!" She narrows her eyes at them.

"You are the most delusional woman to walk this earth, mother." Augustine mutters with a shake of his head. He was tired of doing this for the past thousand years. It was always the same thing over and over, at least Mikael had the audacity to admit his hatred for his children.

"If you can forget the hatred that you cling to and remember all the times I've mended and healed you." She pointedly looks at Niklaus and Augustine who laughs.

"Elijah, do you recall the day Niklaus challenged your father to a duel? Did I leave your brother to die alone? What did I say, when you came to me and asked me to help him?" Esther questions.

Augustine remembered the day as if it weren't a thousand years ago. He challenged him as if the man would respect him if he beat him, Augustine had to step in and both men nearly died. Niklaus was whisked away by their mother as Mary tended to himself in their home.

"The necklace." Klaus whispers, hurt flashing in his eyes. "It wasn't spelled to protect me. It made me weak."

Augustine looks confused as his eyes flit between the two. "I sought to protect you from yourself! If you had killed your father in that duel, or anyone else in the course of your life, you would have activated your curse!" She spits. "Augustine had activated his, I couldn't allow you to do the same."

Klaus slams his hand down on the table. "You ruined me! You left me to suffer at the hands of a father who valued only strength!"

"I kept you from becoming a beast for as long as I possibly could!" She yells looking genuinely honest.

"Oh, you lied to me! To hide your own transgressions because of your own fear! My whole life, I sought the approval I was denied by the man I thought was my father! You turned me into the weakling he hated. You had Augustine married the second you were able to get him away from father, then you took her from us as well!"

Elijah rises to his feet and begins pacing at the turn of events while Augustine closes his eyes looking done with this entire conversation.

"Look at me! You rant and you rave about the monster I have become, but you, Mother, you are the author of everything I am".

Esther's face begins to pale as she starts gasping for breath. This puts all of the siblings on alarm as she faints in her seat. Elijah quickly catches her head from slamming agains the table. "She's gone." He confirms. His gaze becomes accusing as he moves to attack Finn. Predicting this he throws him into a nearby wall with his magic. Klaus speeds towards him soon after and grabs him by his jacket."Where is she?"

Finn blows his fingers and rubs them together, Klaus falls to the floor in pain.

He looks in Augustine's direction whom still sits still at the table with one leg crossed over the other blowing out smoke. Finn narrows his eyes at him and points a finger in his direction. "You're different."

Augustine casually shrugs his shoulders looking careless.  "As you said brother, change is inevitable."

Finn gives him a look that says he doesn't believe him but decides not to push it as the two other brothers begin recovering and he flees from the compound. The

Augustine's phone buzzes in his pocket and he pulls it out. His eyebrow raises as he sees Lucy's name knowing she still hadn't been speaking to him.

911

Knowing she was with Hayley he quickly rings her phone unsure if she would answer. "Auggie.. We're at Lenore's shop-"

The call dies and Augustine shoots out of his seat looking at his disheveled brothers. "Let's go."

"Why would she want Hayley and Lucy?" Elijah worriedly questions.

"To punish us? To learn the truth about the children? Regardless I will kill her." Augustine grits out.

Upon entering the shop the three brothers notice Hayley and Lucy standing in front of the witch Esther had obviously taken over and rush towards the two. Augustine grabs Hayley's arm and pulls her a step behind him giving the woman a menacing look. "Come here."

Esther's face becomes slightly confused but nonetheless throws powder towards the brothers directions creating an invisible barrier.

"You hide behind your spells like a coward!" Klaus accuses her.

"I did not come here to wage war!" She yells.

"If you dare touch her, so help me-" Augustine threatens but she interrupts him. "They are both free to go. I've spoken my peace, they know why I am here. I have come to heal our family."

Augustine scoffs and gives both Marshall women a stern look. "Leave."

Esther raises her hand making a lightbulb explode above them and he quickly yanks the wolf back into himself. "My intent was never to harm! Only to heal, as I have already healed your brothers Finn and Kol. For you, I will undo everything that has been done, thereby giving you a new life! One without the vampire curse I inflicted upon you." She begins waving her hands above the cauldron making the ground shake. "Ask Hayley to share with you my loving proposition. There will come a time, my darlings, that you will beg for it!"

The outside windows shatter as she lifts her arms over her head dozens of starlings fly throw the window and into the store. Augustine holds Hayley's head to his chest as they kneel to the ground in attempts to shield themselves from the chaos.

Back in the compound the family stands around trying to comprehend everything that had happened through out the day.

"Of course she used those damn birds to make her offer!" Klaus rants.

Augustine sits beside the mother of his children subtly rubbing the side of her hip knowing she was anxious after her encounter with Esther.

"Besides the offer of rebirth, what else did she say?" Elijah questions the two women.

Lucy gives Hayley a look and she sighs. "I don't know. She rambled a lot. She blamed the three of you for what happened to Hope, to Lucy, to me... She didn't know about Alec of course."

All three of the brother's gazes zoom in on her.

"Well, I hope neither of you are thinking of taking her offer?" Klaus questions. When neither of them answer he yells. "I'm talking to you!"

Augustine stands in his brothers way as he approaches the women. "Niklaus." He warns.

Never being one to back down Hayley stands to her feet behind the brothers. "What do you want me to say, Klaus? I lost my son and my daughter. So, yeah, when your mother offers to wipe the slate clean, excuse me if I'm tempted."

Lucy stands and gives Elijah a dirty look. "By the way, thanks for your help tonight, Elijah. I'm sorry that it takes me being in danger for you to even talk to me."

As she stomps off Augustine gives both of his brother's looks and follows Hayley up to her room.

As he closes the door behind himself he attempts to gather his thoughts.

"Are you mad at me? For considering her offer?" Hayley quietly questions as she avoids eye contact with him. Augustine sighs to himself. "No, my love. I am not angry." He walks towards her form and gently runs his hands down the sides of her arms, grabbing her hands in his own. He brings both of her hands to his mouth and lays feather light kisses to her palms. "I know you would never do it, you despise my mother too much to ever take anything from her. And I know, that you're aware that we will bring our children home. And they will need their mother at her strongest ready to rip anyone who dares to threaten them apart."

Hayley's face softens. "It was a nice thought."

"I apologize if you hadn't noticed yet, but after having children with an original you will probably never have a normal life again." He honestly tells her. "The enemies my family has accumulated through out the years has made it so."

"I've gathered as much." She half smiles.

He cups her face in his palms. "But you will be happy, I give you my word."

She looks up to him with gentle eyes. "I trust you." She breathes out.
