Chapter 13: Mist Battles
Hi everyone!! SK here.
Before we begin, I'd like to apologize for the lateness of this update. I've been a little busy (ironic since I'm on break from school), and it stopped me from updating sooner. But, this chapter is really long, so hopefully that'll make up for it!!
I also got tagged multiple times to do a Pokemon Questionnaire (the Pokemon Nomination), so I will be doing that after the chapter is over.
Anyway, let's start. I hope you enjoy!! :D
Ash
When I arrive at the Battle Arena there are already some fairies on the field, so I decide to just sit back and watch for a bit. I'm anxious to battle though, it's one of my most favourite things to do in the whole wide world. It's probably better to watch first though.. after all, I have no idea how Mist Battles work. I assume they work the same way as regular battles, but I want to be sure.
There was an intense battle happening when I came in. Now that I'm in the stands I can clearly see who's battling, and to my surprise, it's Bonnie versing some fairy that I've never met before. As I expected her Mist Pokemon is Dedenne, and she appears to be versing a Garchomp. I've never seen her battle before, and she looks very fired up. She appears to be winning, for now at least.
"Dedenne, use Play Rough!" Bonnie is calling out as I sit down. Dedenne lets out its cry, then promptly charges at the opposing Garchomp.
However, the other fairy has a knowing look on his face. "Not so fast! Garchomp, use Earthquake!"
Garchomp lets out a low growl and unleashes its powerful Ground-type move. Dedenne, caught completely off-guard, is hit full-on with the attack. The impact of it causes the tiny Pokemon to be significantly pushed back, and the cloud of dust brought on by the move makes it hard to see if Dedenne made it or not. I can feel myself leaning in to see the action closer; I guess it's the intensity of it all getting me fired up as well.
Miraculously, after the dust clears, Dedenne is still standing. Clearly tired, but standing. I hear cheers from some fairies around me, so I decide to cheer on my friend as well. "You go, Bonnie! You've got this!"
She notices me, then gives me a nod of gratification. I nod back, knowing the look in her eyes all too well. She has a plan.
"Dedenne, are you alright?" she checks.
Dedenne stands tall and nods. "Denene!"
Bonnie smile. "Awesome! Dedenne, use Nuzzle!"
Dedenne charges forward and I hold my breath, knowing the move will have no effect on Garchomp because of its Ground typing. The other fairy seems to know as well because he verbally points it out to her. "You are aware that Electric-type moves have no effect on my Garchomp, right?" He doesn't even tell his Mist Pokemon to dodge; Garchomp just stands there and took zero damage.
Bonnie nods, remaining unfazed. "I know. Now Dedenne, since you're close, use Play Rough!"
I grin as Dedenne perfectly executes its attack; since Garchomp is caught off-guard and has no time to dodge, it faints. And by that I mean that Garchomp's misty form slowly dissipates and returns to the fairy's Necklace, probably to recharge or something else. Dedenne runs up to Bonnie and nuzzles her cheek which sends small sparks of electricity flying in the air. "Awesome work, Dedenne."
The other fairy approaches her and shakes her hand. "Splendid battle. We should have a rematch sometime, no?"
Bonnie nods and returns the gesture. "I couldn't agree more."
The two of them hurry off the field and I quickly rush over to congratulate Bonnie on her win. "Congrats," I say when I near her. "That was an excellent strategy you had back there."
She nods, Dedenne letting out a little squeak on her shoulder. "Thanks Ash! I learned from the best," she adds with a glint in her eye. "Say, are you going to battle today?"
I nod. "I was hoping to, yes."
Bonnie points to a translucent board that floats a few feet away from us. "That's the challenge board," she explains. "Since there's a lot of people who want to battle, you can either write your name down and have someone battle you, or choose from the already listed names and challenge that person."
I nod again. "Thanks."
She shrugs her shoulders. "It's no problem," she says. "Also, do you know where Serena is? I need to talk to her."
I point outside to the main clearing. "Last time I saw her, she was at the dance."
She eagerly rushes out, waving to me. "Thanks Ash! Good luck!"
"Thank you!" I call back, then head towards the board Bonnie was talking about earlier. I scan the available names; I know none of these people. I've just arrived after all; I don't have time to form a relationship with every single fairy in this colony under a day. It makes more sense to me to just write my name down and hope that someone would choose me.
I try looking for some sort of marker, but as I suspected the board is magic so there of course there is no marker. However, when I put my finger next to an empty space, a line starts to form underneath it. Grinning, I write my name down, wincing a little at how messy it looks compared to every other fairy's nice handwriting. But, my name is in a challenge spot, so all I c ando was wait.
I turn to go back to my spot, and while I do so I spot Brock in the center of the battlefield. He must be moderating the battles.
"Next up we have a battle between May and Rito," Brock is saying as I sit down again. "Would-"
"Hold it!"
I hear Misty's voice, and I turn to see her walking into place. She points at Brock with a determined grin on her face. "Brock, I challenge you!"
Brock sighs. "Misty, you must know that like everyone else, you must follow the rules..."
However, Misty doesn't leave, and to Brock's misfortune, the crowd is on her side. Everyone begins chanting for Brock to accept the challenge, and I find myself doing it as well. Eventually, Brock sighs again, quieting everyone down. "Alright alright, I accept your challenge. Let's get on with this, shall we?"
Misty smiles as more cheers erupt from the crowd, watching as Brock steps up to his spot. I now realize that I will get to see a Mist Pokemon being summoned for the first time. Both fairies put their hands on their Necklaces, and a blue flash of light erupts from their centers. When I can see the field again, the Mist Pokemon are slowly forming. Sure enough, I can now clearly see Brock's Steelix and Misty's... Togekiss? I thought she released it.. oh well, another story for later I guess.
Brock's Steelix lets out an enormous roar, but both Misty and her Togekiss remain unfazed. "Best of luck to you, Brock," she calls out, sounding almost like a taunt from the way she says it. "Now Togekiss, let's get things started off with Fairy Wind!"
Togekiss nods, then sends a gust of wind towards Steelix. It succeeds in pushing the giant Pokemon backwards, but it doesn't do much damage. "Did you forget? Your Fairy-type attacks won't do much to Steelix," Brock informs slyly. "Now Steelix, use Iron Tail!"
With a low-pitched roar, Steelix rises its tail to strike Togekiss; luckily, Misty's Pokemon manages to dodge at the last second. In my mind I begin to ponder both of their strategies and I theorize on which person could win. Brock definitely has a type-advantage, but with Togekiss's moveset, Misty could turn the whole thing around...
I jumped a little as the crowd cheers; I appear to have missed something. To my surprise, when I look down there is a cloud of smoke around Brock's Steelix, and I almost jump out of my seat. How did Misty land a hit on him!?
"Steelix, are you okay?" Brock asks as soon as the smoke cleared. Steelix has taken some notable damage, but it is still ready as ever to battle. In response to its trainer, it nods its giant head. Once he's truly sure that his Mist Pokemon is alright, Brock gives Misty a knowing look. "That was a finely executed attack- I forgot your Togekiss knew that move."
Curse myself for getting lost in thought right at a crucial moment. What move could Togekiss possibly have to counter a Steel-type like Steelix!? I have to be sure to pay closer attention next time.
"Don't congratulate me yet, I still haven't beaten you!" Misty exclaims. "Togekiss, you're doing well! Use-"
"Not so fast," Brock says, interrupting her. "Steelix, time for your Gyro Ball!"
As soon as he ordered the command, Steelix rolls itself into a ball and begins to near Togekiss at alarming speeds. Misty, however, does not seem bothered by this.
"Don't panic," she says quickly. "Togekiss, use Fairy Wind to blow it back."
"Togekiss!" Misty's Mist Pokemon exclaims when it unleashes its Fairy-type attack. Of course, it does almost no damage to Steelix being a Fairy-type move, but it was a successful block on Misty's part. This is a really exciting battle... I wonder which fairy will get to battle me.
"Quickly, before Steelix can move!" Misty yells. "Aura Sphere!"
A giant blue glowing sphere appears in front of Togekiss, and with a cry, it gets launched at Steelix. Since Steelix doesn't have time to recover yet, it gets hit by the move. Aura Sphere is a Fighting-type attack... maybe that's what I missed earlier. Fighting-type attacks are super effective against Steel-types.
Because of its high defense, Steelix still stands on the battlefield. "Quickly Steelix, let's finish this," Brock shouts. "Iron Tail!"
Steelix lets out a low growl, then swings its tail at Togekiss to execute its attack.
"Togekiss, use Extreme Speed!" Misty shouts. Togekiss nods and gradually begins to gather up speed while Steelix is still launching itself at Misty's Mist Pokemon. Honestly I'm not sure who I'm rooting for; this is a pretty intense battle, so I'm sure I'll be happy for whoever wins it.
Togekiss launches itself at Steelix, making a successful hit while Steelix hits Togekiss, at the same time, with its Iron Tail. There is a huge cloud of smoke, and when it fades, both Pokemon appear to have fainted.
"So it's a tie," I whisper to myself thoughtfully. No winners, no losers... not the best way to end a battle, but not the worst either.
Both Brock and Misty recall their Mist Pokemon, a blue mist-like aura surrounding them as they did so. Afterwards, Brock goes over to Misty's side to shake her hand. "Truly a great battle," he remarks. "Your Togekiss is still getting stronger."
"As with Steelix," she adds. "Thanks for the battle, Brock. We're definitely going to battle again sometime, and I'm going to-"
"Very sorry to interrupt, however, this is where the challenger stands, yes?"
I swear all the crowd's eyes turn to the entrance, and I see even Misty's eyes widening. "H-Heliux!?"
He gives her a slight smile. "I do believe you are standing in my spot."
I see everyone getting hyped up, but since I don't understand why, I nudge a guy beside me. "Hey, what's the big deal?" I ask when he turns.
He smiles at me kindly. "Heliux is... resigned," he begins. "He usually only surveys celebrations like these from a far, and it is rare to see him participate. I remember one time he put his name on that board over there," he said pointing, "and almost the entire colony wanted to challenge him, because he never battles. But, when he does, he's super strong, and he's never lost before... ever. And you know his deal, how he can live forever?" he checks, and I nod. "Yeah.. even with all that time, he's never lost. He only challenges someone if he thinks they're a worthy opponent, so I wonder who he's challenging! I'm Leo by the way," he adds, holding out his hand for a fist-bump. "Don't worry, once you get used to everything it's pretty easy-going here."
I return the fist-bump with a smile, pleasantly surprised by the niceness of some of the fairies. "I'm Ash Ketchum, and thank you." So Heliux never challenges someone unless they're worthy... he doesn't seem like the kind of guy to call anyone worthy...
"Wh-Who are you challenging?" Misty asks, still sounding pretty shocked. It's a little hard to see from where I'm sitting, but I can tell Brock was at a loss for words as well.
Heliux holds his head up high. "The person I am challenging is..."
"...Ash Ketchum."
It takes me a moment to register that he'd said my name, but when I do I slowly stand up in my seat, unsure whether to wait for him to call me down or to just run down those stairs myself. I can feel everyone's eyes on me, and it makes me feel a little nervous.
Almost at once, scarily fast, Heliux spots me. "Ah, Ash. There you are. Come down," he says. Though he probably can't see it from where he is I nod, then proceed to race down the stairs as quickly as I can without tripping and making myself look like an idiot. Heliux sees me as worthy... why?
I meet up with Heliux at the bottom, and he stares at me deep in the eyes. "Serena says that you are an expert battle trainer," he says. "I can see the passion in you; very few others have that same fire for battle. If you choose to accept my my challenge, then prepare yourself for a strenuous battle."
I nod, feeling determined. "I accept!" I definitely want to battle Heliux, because from what others have said he is a true master at battling. Also, if this is the guy Serena has her eyes set on, I intend to give him a piece of my mind...
I'm about to go to the other side of the battlefield, but I suddenly feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn, and to my delight, I see Serena! "Serena, what are you doing here? I thought you were dancing!" I ask, pleasantly surprised by her sudden appearance.
She shows me that brilliant smile of hers. "Well, I was, but I saw Heliux making his way here, and I had a gut-feeling that he was coming to challenge you. It's been a long time since I've watched you battle, and I've never seen Heliux battle either," she says while averting her eyes to the Minister. "This is definitely not something to miss, that's for sure!"
"Yeah, Serena, let's watch it together," Misty says; it catches me off-guard, I almost forget she was even there. The two girls head up into the stands and I feel a warm feeling in my chest. I'll definitely feel better battling if I know Serena's watching me.
I walk confidently to the other side of the battlefield, thinking about which Pokemon I will use. Even though I don't know what his Mist Pokemon is, I still heavily debate between using Greninja or Pikachu. After all, I'm only supposed to have one Pokemon with me; to keep that up, I'd only be allowed to show the Pokemon that I end up using right now...
Alright. I've made up my mind.
Both of us take our places on the battlefield, and I place a hand on my waist to grab a Pokeball from my belt. I throw it in the air, shouting. "I choose you, Pikachu!"
My partner is finally released from his Pokeball, and I'd never seen him happier. I suddenly feel extremely guilty for leaving him in there as long as I did, but I'm glad to see he looks okay. Pikachu seems to know that we're about to be battling, and he nods back at me with electricity sparking at his cheeks. He runs up in front of me, letting out his battle cry. "Pika!"
"Good to see you again, Buddy," I say cheerfully. "Now, what do you saw we give it our best shot?"
Pikachu jumps up in the air, looking excited. "Pikapi!" The crowd cheers; I think Pikachu and his cuteness has won them over.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the field, Heliux is summoning his own Pokemon. I'm a bit confused on how he can do it without a Necklace, but eventually, a Pokemon forms in front of us. I recognize it instantly, it is an Alakazam. Huh. I probably should have chosen Greninja for a type-advantage... no matter. That Pokemon suits his personality very well.
"Are both sides ready?" Brock checks.
"You bet!" I shout determinedly.
"Of course," comes Heliux's calm response.
Brock nods, raising his hand up in the air. "Battle begin!"
"Alakazam, Future Sight," Heliux commands as soon as Brock finishes speaking. The Psi Pokemon nods and conjures the attack, sending the rock-like objects into miniature black holes. My mind is racing; unlike that gym battle I had with Olympia, I have no way of keeping track of the time. It's alright. Me and Pikachu will think of something.
"Pikachu, use Iron Tail!" I yell. Pikachu nods and leaps upwards, his lightning-shaped tail turning into steel. He rushes towards Alakazam, ready to strike.
"Psychic," Heliux calmly says. Alakazam nods and focuses on Pikachu, sending him flying in the opposite direction before he has a chance to attack.
My heart is still racing. So, close-up attacks aren't really good for this guy. So how about some distance? "Okay Pikachu, try your Thunderbolt."
"Use Kinesis," Heliux says waving his hand. Alakazam sends a burst of psychic power towards Pikachu, while my buddy sends back a powerful electric shock. To my surprise, Alakazam doesn't even try dodging, and Pikachu doesn't take any damage from the Psychic-type move. It must be an attack or defense or- what's the name again? Oh yeah, status. Dammit, what did it do to Pikachu!?
"Kinesis again," Heliux orders. I don't even have time to tell Pikachu to dodge, the move surrounds him too fast. I look up to the stands for reassurance, and I can see Serena sitting there and cheering for me. It occurs to me that there was a formal throne for the leader to sit in, but I guess Serena doesn't want to be too formal now.
"Pikachu, let's switch it up. Electroball!" I watch as Pikachu forms the giant ball of electricity, but when he launches the attack, it widely misses Alakazam. Pikachu is confused as am I; Pikachu never misses by that much!
"Kinesis is a move that lowers accuracy," Heliux states, noticing my puzzled look.
I gulp. This is not looking good, but I have to reassure Pikachu.
"Hey Pikachu, we're-" I was going to say 'fine', but just then the Future Sight comes hurling down at Pikachu, who is just as unsuspecting of it as I am. It hits him with full force, and my heart hurts thinking of my partner. "Pikachu, are you alright?"
Thankfully, he is still standing and ready to go. "Pikachu, Thunderbolt again!"
Pikachu executes its attack, but Alakazam dodges successfully. "Future Sight again, then use Facade," Heliux commands.
Alakazam launches another Future Sight attack, then launches itself at Pikachu for its second attack. I know I have to act fast to take advantage of this. "Pikachu, use Iron Tail when it comes close!"
"Pika!" Pikachu's tail is steel again, and right as Alakazam is about to be making contact with Pikachu, he successfully hits the Psychic-type Pokemon. It gets pushed back, and thanks to Pikachu's Static ability, Alakazam has sparks jolting all around it; it's been paralyzed! However, when I look at Heliux, he doesn't look upset about it.
I realize why; after a couple seconds, Pikachu appears to be paralyzed as well, . Alakazam's ability must be Synchronize... dammit. However, Heliux is just thinking to himself, not making any actions, so I know this was time to act.
"Pikachu, Quick Attack!"
Pikachu speedily runs around the battlefield and manages to hit Alakazam one or two successful times out of all the times it dodged. I'm surprised how speedy that Alakazam really is. Heliux brings his eyes back to the battlefield, looking confident. "Use Facade again!"
"Use Electroball!" I try saying, but Pikachu's paralysis takes effect and he can't move. He takes Alakazam's attack with full force, except this time it is much, much more powerful than before.
"Facade's power increases if negative status conditions are present," Heliux explains. "I suppose I have your Pikachu to thank for that."
I feel like saying a comeback of some sort, but I'm too focused on Pikachu's well-being. He has definitely taken a lot of damage, but he's still able to stand up and fight. Thanks, Buddy. We'll end this, I swear. All I need is a strategy. Wait! If he uses Psychic again... I hurry to whisper my plan to Pikachu.
"Kinesis," Heliux says, but Pikachu is aware of the attack now and successfully dodges it. "Alakazam, use Psychic."
I nod at my partner, because I know he knows what he is doing. Alakazam's Psychic bounces him off of a couple of walls, and although I know he's taking some hard damage, Pikachu will get a fine attack in.
"Now bring him close to you for a final Facade," Heliux orders. Alakazam nods and brought Pikachu close, but I'm just grinning because this is all a part of my plan.
"Alright! Now that you're close, use Iron Tail!"
"Pika" Rapidly, Pikachu slashes his tail across Alakazam, the Psi Pokemon taking the full force of the attack. It gets pushed back a little, and a small cloud of dust arises.
"Wonderful strategy," Heliux comments. "But I am afraid your time is up. Alakazam, you can still fight, yes?" Alakazam nods; though a little weak, it's still ready to battle. "Excellent. Use Psychic on Pikachu to keep it in once place, then use Facade."
Alakazam tries using Psychic, but the paralysis takes effect and it can't move. "Pikachu, now's our chance! Use Electroball!" Pikachu launches the Elecric-type at Alakazam, who now cannot move because of paralysis. It tanks the hit, and it's still standing.
"Alakazam, it is okay. Try again," Heliux says simply. I didn't expect him to try to attack combo again, so Pikachu has no time to dodge the Psychic attack. And of course, right after, Pikachu gets knocked back pretty far with Alakazam's Facade. There is a huge cloud of smoke, and Pikachu is left barely able to stand.
Why do I feel like I'm forgetting something...
Just then, Alakazam's Future Sight opens up. The attack pelts at Pikachu, and since he is too tired he can't dodge. Another cloud of smoke forms around my partner, and I hope that Pikachu will be okay afterwards. I lock eyes with Heliux, who's face looks as if it were made of stone.
He is an amazing battle trainer, and there's nothing I can do to rival him. All I know is that if Serena likes him...
I'm done for.
Wow the chapter is finished. I hope you enjoyed Ash's battle against Heliux.. I'm not the best at writing battles so I hope it was okay. Who do you think will win????
Now, for the Pokemon Nomination!! I'll just list and answer the questions below, so it'll be easier to read.
1. Favourite Pokemon
As many of you probably guessed, it's Sylveon. BUT since I'm also saying Sylveon somewhere else, I'll also list a few more of my favourites: Braixen and Meowstic. I have a lot more but it'll be too long to list here.. so yeah.
2. Least Favourite Pokemon
I don't really hate any Pokemon that much... I guess I'll say Sableye, only because it looks a little odd to me.
3. Favourite Starter
Fennekin. Just... Fennekin.
4. Favourite Eeveelution
Do I really need to say? But yes, it's Sylveon.
5. Favourite Legendary
Hmm... for me it's a tie between Latias, Xerneas, and Zygarde.
6. Most Frightening Pokemon
Gengar. Why? His animations in Pokken Tournament kinda scare me lol.
7. Most Adorable Pokemon
I have a very long list, but my favourite adorable Pokemon include Eevee, Dedenne, and Vulpix.
8. Most Hilarious Pokemon
Clemont's Chespin XD
9. Favourite Pokemon Type
Psychic!!
10. Least Favourite Pokemon Type
Hmm... I don't really hate any type, but I suppose Ice for it's many weaknesses, or Poison because POISON MOVES ARE SO FREAKING ANNOYING IN BATTLES.
11. Favourite Character
Serena, Ash, Dawn, and Bonnie- it's a four-way tie.
12. Favourite Move
Aaahh.. it's kinda hard to say. There are a lot of moves I like. For power I'd say Fire Blast, for strategy I'd say Future Sight, and for looks I'd say Dazzling Gleam or Moon Blast.
13. Would you be a Pokemon or a Human?
I would prefer to be a battle trainer.
14. If you were a gym leader, what type would you master?
Probably Psychic, because I like a lot of their battle moves in terms of strategy.
15. Favourite Region
Definitely Kalos ^^
16. Where do you want to live?
Well, definitely in Kalos somewhere. Probably Lumiose City though.
17. What Pokemon would you be?
Hmm.. it's a tie between Sylveon and Braixen for this one.
18. Favourite Gym Leader
Clemont and Korrina are both really good Gym Leaders.
19. Most Nostalgic Moment
Probably in Sun and Moon when everyone travels to Kanto is the most nostalgic, but my favourite is either Ash and Serena as little kids (AMOURSHIPPING YAY) or when Ash remembers how he sheltered Pokemon from the rain in XYZ.
20. Favourite Pokemon Professor
The original Professor: Professor Oak. Professor Sycamore is a runner up.
21. Favourite Villain
Giovanni, but second place is Lysandre.
22. Favourite Rival
Alain, definitely. Second place is probably Gary though.
23. A Pokemon who resembles your friend
Clemont's Chespin for two of my friends, because they both really love food XD
24. Name a Pokemon who would be useful in real life
I know I'm biased but I'd have to say a Sylveon. Sylveon's ribbons would come in real handy and honestly its cuteness would be a constant source of happiness ^^
25. Name a Pokemon who resembles your favourite animal
Delcatty or Rowlet (I have multiple favourite animals)
26. Name a Pokemon of your favourite colour
I love blue.. so Vaporeon I guess??
27. How did you name your rival? Is there a nickname for your character?
Heh.. I just named my rival by his canon name. As for my character, I also named them by their canon name (yeah yeah I know I'm boring).
28. Favourite game
I've never played it, but I love Gen 6 so I have to say the X and Y games.. though I have a feeling Gen 8 will be right up there with them when it comes out. When it comes to games I've actually played, probably Emerald. I also love Pokken Tournament as well.. it's a good fighting game.
29. Favourite Pokemon opening song
That will have to be the XYZ opening, Stand Tall.
30. Mention who tagged you and tag ten friends
I actually got tagged three times, by Ironfistelite, Turtwig19, and RahulKalosChamp. I'm not sure if it'll hit ten but here it goes:
Yeah.. that's all who I want to tag, sorry!! Don't feel pressured to do this if you don't want to and/or don't have time. I get it ^^
Anyways..
Wow this was a VERY long chapter- almost 5000 words (but mostly due to the Nomination, sorry >w<)!!! It's time for me to go, so stay tuned for more!! :D
