The Night Before

       Katherine POV
"Mother, when will Daddy be home?" I asked as we entered the warm house. My heeled boots made a clack sound as I stepped onto the titled floor of our mud room. I quickly shed my black coat and my yellow scarf, revealing my button up white blouse and pleated black skirt, and hung them up on the coat rack before entering any farther into the house.
She placed the many 'special' bags onto the lovely white polished stone countertop. "He'll be home in time for your parting dinner, don't worry sweetheart. Are you sure you got everything you need for your sixth year at you know where? There's still time to go back to-"
"Mother, I'm sure I got everything. Besides-" I grabbed an apple off the fruit bowl on the bar. "I got my magic from you. You don't have to talk about Hogwarts like it's some sort of prison. It's only Dad who doesn't like to talk about it."
She sighed as she brought out the ingredients to start preparing my favourite dishes. "I know, but... I still like to respect him when he's not around. Anyways, you said you wanted..."
"Your famous spaghetti with that AMAZING home made tomato sauce, and your delicious loaded mashed potatoes. WITH sparkling apple cider to drink, those crisp green beans Aunt Martha made on thanksgiving that you sent me via owl, those amazing cheddar bay biscuits you made on Daddy's birthday, and Lemon Meringue pie for dessert." I finished for her. I took a big bite of my apple and looked at her.
"Wow, I forgot how much you could eat..." She sighed, "Well, Aunt Martha and Uncle Steve are coming in about an hour for your dinner. They're bringing Darcy along too, so-"
"I know, I know. Go tidy my room up, pack everything, and change to look nice for Darcy." I let out a groan. "Why do Aunt Martha and Uncle Steve bring him along to everything if he's not related to them. I'm not complaining it's nice to have a decent conversation with him about normal things, but it seems as if everyone, with the exception of you and Aunt Martha, want me and Darcy to start dating."
She rolled her green eyes at my dramatic monologue. "Katherine, he's the closest thing that Uncle Steve has to an heir to his company. It doesn't matter if  everyone wants you two together, you know where to put him in your love life, no one can force you to love him. If he's your best muggle friend then let him be your best muggle friend." I chuckled at my mother's words. She may be nearing her golden years, but my mom was still young at heart. "Okay, so that topic aside, your older brother and sister are coming tonight too, so you better hurry up, you know how they are. Always arriving an hour early. You have 50 minutes maximum to pack and clean." I jumped off the stool I was seated on. "And please try to do something about your hair, it's grown frizzy again." I grabbed the 'special' bags off the counter.
"Don't you need some help with cooking?" I turned around in the kitchen doorway to face my mother, my brown eyes full of concern. She had a sly smirk on her face as she pulled her wand out from her blazer pocket.
"I think I'll manage. Now, shoo! You need to hurry, and remember-"
"No Magic!" We stated in unison.
I giggled and thundered up the stairs nearly tripping multiple times on account of my boots. My dark chocolate curls flourished behind me as I rushed to my room at the end of the hallway.
I kicked off my boots as I entered my large black and white themed room. I flipped on the light and scrambled to the foot of my bed. I removed all the blankets that lay atop my beautiful sticker covered black trunk. I set the bags down next to the beaten up dated wood of the trunk.
I undid the latch, and pried open the lid. I glanced around the space. It still had all my old robes and books from last year inside. I started to gingerly unpack all of the old possessions, carefully looking through each one, trying to find something important. After, what seemed to be an eternity with my time crunch, I found what I was looking for. My old photo album. Every Year I would take a photo with my friends at the train station going to Hogwarts, and one coming back. Every year there seemed to be at least one new person in the second photo. How did I take muggle photos on Hogwarts grounds, you may ask? Well, it turns out that disposable cameras actually work on school grounds because they were developed by a muggle born wizard in the muggle world, I think... That's more a question for my friend Davey. I smiled at the memories that the book held.
I placed it with all the things that I would pack for this year's adventure. I removed the last few things from the chest. A small sigh escaped my lips at all the memories I had from last year, like the time Jeffery, also known as Race, and Alexander, or also known as Bumlets, played a horrible prank on Professor McGonagal during transfiguration class, or when I got to meet a really cool girl who was in Gryffindor last year. Her real name was Amelia, but everyone called her 'Smalls' because she was so short. At first she hated the nickname, but she grew to like it when she found out it was just my group's way of including her.
I laughed a little at all the memories I had at Hogwarts, it was sad that I would only have two more years to make more memories.
I shook myself out of my thought quickly, I was on a serious time crunch still. I looked to my bedside clock. 'Only 30 more minutes?! Where did the time go?' I grabbed the boxes that held my new robes and pulled the yellow and black things out of them. A tiny Hufflepuff insignia stitched onto the right breast pocket signalling my house and six little dashes underneath it showing my year. I quickly folded all seven robes and ties placed them neatly into my trunk, next were my skirts and my blouses, which were already folded neatly in the laundry basket next to my closet. I threw those in with my robes, next were my books, my photo album, my notebooks and quills, then my broom, and lastly, and most importantly, my Cherry wood and Phoenix feather wand. I looked around my room for the burgundy coloured box, forgetting that I had hidden it from my father. I soon found it under my pillow and placed it as carefully as I could into the almost full piece of luggage ((A/N: I'm running out of synonyms for the work trunk)). I soon folded up my favourite blanket and my stuffed wolf ((Heehee, it's my high school's new mascot, i couldn't resist the opportunity.)) that I've had since I was a child.
As I closed the lid of my trunk, my albino horned owl, Slush, cooed in his cage. He flapped his wings mildly and quickly grew restless inside his fairly large cage, practically begging me to let him out into the night for him to go catch his dinner.
"Alright, alright. I get it you're hungry. Just give me a few seconds. Geez, I swear you are as impatient as Race is when I don't help him with his potions homework sometimes." I flipped the latch and placed the key lock onto it, securing my belongings into the long box.
I opened up my balcony doors and stepped away as I felt the crisp breeze ruffle my curls and making my hair even frizzier. A chill ran up my spine as I turned around to unlock Slush's cage, but as I was undoing the latch I got the feeling as if someone were watching me from outside. I turned around quickly, and I saw that there was no one inside my room, yet the feeling never left. I released Slush and started to place all of the old belongings that I had unpacked from my luggage into a box labeled 'Charity', I still felt as if someone was watching me, but I ignored it for the sake of my sanity.
I started to work on cleaning my room, and as I did I felt as if I heard someone whisper my name. I spun around, knowing that someone was in my room, but I still never saw anybody. I sighed in relief.
'Maybe Ross is playing with my head by placing a hex on me. It would be just like him to do that.' I thought to my self.
My room was neatly cleaned, and I glanced to the clock again. '15 minutes?! Maybe I should just use a tiny little spell to straighten my hair... What am I thinking?! No! Bad Katherine, you're not allowed to use magic outside of school yet. Just ask mom to do it.' I sighed again and took out all the bobby pins I had placed in my hair earlier in the day to keep all the Flyaway's contained.
"Katherine..." I heard my name as another chilly breeze swept through my room. My blood ran cold as I heard my name, I got a really creepy feeling just by being in my room. 'I'm definitely going to chew Ross out for this. I don't care if he's my older brother, I'm going to let him have an earful. He knows how my imagination can be.' I quickly walked to my door, not wanting to be in my room any longer. I grabbed my boots and headed downstairs to my awaiting mother. 'Hopefully, this hex will be over when he leaves after dinner.'

A/N: Well, that ends my first chapter. The first time I uploaded was just to get the idea out there. I finally put an official plan together and wrote it down. Now, my creative juices are flowing, so I'm going to write a couple more chapters, but I am not going to publish them until next Saturday. HA! I'm going to be one of those authors that makes you wait a week before I upload another chapter.
I'm starting a lot on new things this year. I'm actually getting my homework done before I leave school. I practice Choir and Dance Squad for 30 minutes each, then I do my english reading homework at home, and now I will write when I get home. Yay for organising!
Anyways, I really missed writing... I may discontinue my Newsies One-Shots because I don't really feel like write one-shots anymore... *sighs* and I feel really bad about that because I have two people who have been so patient with me on these one shots and now they aren't getting written. UGH!
I will try to keep up with this book and finish it, but if I miss a couple weeks I'm sorry in advance. In two weeks from today, I have solo and Ensemble for choir and I also have my birthday! I will try to upload on that day, but it may be VERY late at night, so...
But anyways, Thank you guys so much for reading this and thank you to KatherinePulitzumber who gave me this idea with her wonderful oneshot, and to Broadway_BlueEyes who encouraged me, so yeah... *smiley face*
KEEP READING LOVIES!
