“So, do I even get a hint?” I asked as we sat at the lunch table.
“No. And every time you ask me about it, you owe me another favor,” Phil said sternly.
“What?! But that’s not even fair!” I cried.
Phil shrugged. “Do I look like I care?”
“No,” I said in defeat. “No, you don’t look like you care. Asshead.”
Phil smirked and bit into his pizza. Angel and Molly were watching us in amusement. I pouted and went back to eating my lunch.
Fine! Let Phil be a stupid asshead! Psh, I didn’t want to know what this favor was anyways. I LIKED SURPRISES. THEY WERE SURPRISING.
“Nick, quit glaring at Phil! He’s not telling you,” Molly said, rolling her eyes and smacking me in the back of the head.
I pouted deeper before getting an idea. I slid next to Phil and gently traced my fingers on his chest. I brought my lips so that they were nearly touching his ear.
“Please tell me,” I whispered and nibbled on his ear.
Phil wrapped his arms around me and shook his head. “No. And now you owe me two favors,” he said smugly. “But nice try.” He kissed me and I pouted again.
“Phillip whatever your middle name is Brooks! You are such an asshead!” I whined, going back over to my seat and crossing my arms childishly.
“Alan,” he said. “My middle name is Alan. Now you can give me a proper, stern talking to.” He grinned and I flipped him off, turning my head away from him.
“We’re not friends,” I announced.
“No, we’re probably not. But you’re still my boyfriend, so I’m happy,” he said with a shrug, taking another bite of his pizza.
“Phillip Alan Brooks, we are so not boyfriends anymore!” I said, glaring at him.
“Don’t say that or I’ll hit you,” he snapped, his mood swings reappearing.
I rolled my eyes. “Chill out Phil. I was just kidding. It was a joke. You know, haha joke,” I explained with a sigh.
The childlike confusion slapped onto his face. “Oh. Sorry,” he mumbled, reaching over and grabbing my hand in his. He squeezed it and gave me a shy smile. Oh my lanta. He drove me crazy. But I did love the boy to death.
I kissed him before we went back to eating. The day blurred by, and then Phil was following me onto my bus.
We got off at my house and walked inside together, holding hands. Cujo greeted us eagerly and I smiled as Phil pet him.
“I like your dog,” Phil said, stroking Cujo’s fur. Cujo’s tail thumped the floor happily and he barked and licked Phil’s hand. Phil cracked a smile.
“I’m glad,” I said, kissing Phil’s cheek.
Phil and I went to my room and I shut the door before my mom could notice that I was home. She must have been in the backyard or something.
“Alright,” I said with a sigh. “What favor do I owe you?”
“Favors,” Phil corrected. “You owe me two, remember?”
“I was hoping you forgot,” I grumbled.
“Don’t try to trick me!” he snapped.
I pushed him onto my bed and sat in his lap, wrapping my arms around his neck and kissing him deeply. He kissed me back and I pulled away and rested my forehead on his, grinning.
“Won’t happen again,” I whispered before kissing him again.
“Now, my favors,” Phil said smugly.
I nodded nervously. What was he going to make me do? Something sexual? Was he going to demand I give him Cujo? Was he going to demand my dad arrested his mom? Gosh I sure hoped he asked for that last one.
“First thing you have to do for me, is promise that you won’t ever lie to me again. No matter what, you can never, ever lie to me,” he said, glaring at me.
I blinked in confusion before nodding. “Of course. I promise. So that was my favor?” I asked. I thought he would’ve wanting something more than that.
Phil nodded, relaxing a little. “Yes, that was the first favor you owed me. The second is that you never, ever leave me. Ever. You can never leave me for anyone else,” he said, dropping his gaze from mine sadly. “I don’t want to lose you Nick.”
I gently grabbed his chin and tipped his head up so that he was looking into my eyes. “I promise I will never lie to you or leave you Phillip. I love you,” I whispered, smiling and kissing him deeply.
Phil kissed me back and we fell back on my bed together. Phil held me tightly and I cuddled against him.
My bedroom door opened and my mom appeared. She looked at us before smiling widely and clapping her hands together.
“Look at you two! You’re so cute together!” she gushed.
“Thanks mom,” I said, rolling my eyes.
“Now, be honest with me boys. Have you…done the dirty?” mom whispered.
I face palmed myself. “Oh my lanta,” I groaned before slowly nodding. Mom put her hands on her hips and fixed me and Phil with a stern look.
“No being bad! Bad boys! Both of you! Keep it in your pants! Now Phil, don’t you hurt my little Nicky,” mom said, frowning deeply.
“I won’t Mrs. Bradley,” Phil said honestly, kissing my cheek.
Mom left my room and I rested my head on Phil’s chest. He began to play with my hair and I mentally sighed.
“Hey Phil…why were you stealing from the gas station?” I asked.
He got a guilty look. “I was hungry. My mom said if I wanted food I had to get it myself because I was being bad. I walked through the living room with my shoes on. She said I wasn’t allowed to eat her food if I was going to dirty her house. I didn’t have any money so I tried to sneak from the gas station.”
“What did your mom do when she found out?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
Phil frowned deeply. “She told me how stupid I am. I could’ve just gone to Angel’s house. His parents own a restaurant, after all. I’m so stupid. I forgot. She punished me.”
“Phil you’re not stupid,” I said fiercely.
Phil sighed. “Yes I am. But I try really hard to learn things so that I’m not stupid anymore! That’s why I ask you for help sometimes Nick. You’re smart,” he said.
“I’ll help you with anything anytime Phil. You’re not stupid. You’re really hard working. You’re smarter than you give yourself credit for,” I said honestly.
His mom was such a horrible person. Making her son think that child abuse was normal and that he was stupid. I hoped that bitch burned in hell for all eternity.
Mom called us out for dinner a little while later and we went to the table. We sat down and began to eat.
“So, how are you boys?” dad asked nervously. I glanced at him in confusion. Why was he acting nervous?
Dad winced as mom smacked him in the back of the head. She narrowed her eyes at him and he sighed.
“Mom says no more sex or she’ll castrate you Nick,” he mumbled. Mom smiled and nodded in approval.
Phil coughed in his arm to disguise a laugh. “Yea Nick. No more sex,” he said in amusement.
“What about you Phil? Does your mom know you’re being rowdy with Nick?” dad asked, keeping casual. Oh my lanta dad.
Phil stopped laughing and frowned. He nodded before hesitating. “Well, kind of. Uh…she just doesn’t like me being sexual when she’s home. I have to leave when she has one of her boyfriends over.” He shrugged, unconcerned.
Dad nodded before going back to eating. I grabbed Phil’s hand and kissed him before we both ate. Phil left sometime later and I showered before going to bed.
The next day, I got off my bus at school and went inside. I went to my locker before finding Molly and Angel in the hallway.
“Where’s Phil?” I asked curiously.
“He went to his locker. He’ll be back in a minute or two,” Angel said with a shrug, his arms around Molly.
Molly glanced around the main lobby. She froze and her eyes widened a little. “Uh…Nicky? I think we might have a little problem,” she said, nodding.
I gave her a confused look before glancing around myself. My eyes landed on Phil and I stiffened up. Phil was glaring furiously at…oh my lanta.
Kenneth Domizio.
