Chapter Sixteen
Song above is explicit and lyrics could frighten younger readers... I think? hehe...
I sat in an uncomfortable chair between Phil and Shawn in a long, elevated room that none of us had seen before. The walls were plain white, the ceiling was a pretty light grey and the floor was marble. It was extremely clean and the only things in the room were us 48 students, the two doctors, 48 chairs and a tray with a scanner.
Dr Weston pushed the tray outside of the room and the door closed.
Dr Demonico gave us a smile, probably meant to be reassuring, but it chilled me to the bones. Shawn rubbed my lower back, to soothe me.
I smiled gratefully up at him and then turned my attention back to Dr Demonico.
"First things first," she said, chuckling, "Any volunteers?"
No one had a hand up straight away. But, Rose's hand slowly lifted, "I-I'll go..."
I heard her mutter as she went to walk out, "Seeing as no one else will..."
She came back in a minute later, and an odd sensation tingled my nose. Sniffing, like everyone else, I caught a hint of freesia and... orange? It was quite a pretty smell, actually. I heard two loud beeps from opposite corners of the room, and two guys flushed in the face.
Dr Demonico stifled a smile and, presumably, wrote their names down on a clipboard.
Rose moved and sat in her old chair - the smell quickly fading away. Rose looked quite pleased with herself, a small smile settling on her lips.
"Any more volunteers?" Dr Demonico asked.
"I'll go?" Emily smirked and stood up, exiting the room.
I steadily prepared myself for the onslaught of guys that I was sure would beep for Em. Once, we went to the movies - first and last time we did so - and four different guys came up and asked her out.
She came back in and she gave out a smell of passionfruit.
I held in a laugh as five beeps came through the room. I glanced to my brother next to me, with slight disappointment that he didn't feel anything for my friend. If anyone was going to date Shawn, I'd want it to be-
Beep.
I jumped at the alertness of Shawn's microchip.
Shawn glared silently at the ground in front of him, running a hand through his hair, flushed in his cheeks. Emily gave out a small, smug smile to me as she sat down in her chair at the end of the room.
A few girls in the room began grumbling at this.
Phil Quan, next to me, was the next one to get up and come back in. Olivia let out a beep almost immediately and most of us burst into laughter at her chilled out reaction to it.
"Next?"
No one volunteered. At all.
"If no one volunteers, I'll have to pick someone," she quietly threatened.
Next thing I know... Christian is walking out of the room.
I stiffened in my chair. Please, don't beep. Please, don't beep. Please, don't beep...
Christian walked back in and my nose filled with the most delicious scent of a campfire and the woods. I glanced up at him and suddenly, I forgot how to breathe. He looked... he looked better than I'd ever seen him. Crap. I'd forgotten to-
Beep.
I froze in my seat. That came from me... That was my microchip. I felt my cheeks warm. I'd just... I'd just... I'd just beeped for Christian? No. That wasn't the plan. No. No. No. No.
"Hm," Dr Demonico said lightly, writing my name down and a few others that had also beeped.
I risked a glance to Christian, who was staring at me with a raised eyebrow. He mouthed, "I dare you."
I stood up, without being told, and nodded confidently at Dr Demonico, "I'll go next."
Dr Weston gave me a small smile when I walked out, "So. Did you beep for him?"
"What do you think?" I narrowed my eyes at him.
He chuckled slightly, "Of course..."
He scanned my microchip, but I couldn't smell anything different. Dr Weston sniffed, "Nice. You smell like lilies..."
I rolled my eyes, but politely with a small grin, and walked back in. It was strange, being up there, being judged on my smell. But it wasn't just that - it was based on my compatibility with any guy in the room. A heard a beep go off in the far corner of the room, and my eyes connected to a red-faced Eric from DAB. Another beep went off, closer to me, which belonged to Julian. Another beep off in the far part of the room, and that time I froze at the owner.
Christian was staring at me, pale-faced. I watched as he gulped. I took a deep breath and went to sit back down. Dr Demonico wrote their names down with another small, smug grin, and I shivered.
Christian and I had beeped for each other. We were... pheromone compatible?
Science doesn't prove anything. Science can't tell me who my true... match is. Right?

Emily nudged me at dinner, "So... Christian, huh?"
Beth piped in, "I always thought you two would end up together..."
"We're not gonna end up together," I scowled, suddenly not hungry anymore.
Em sighed, "How can you be so sure?"
"Because none of this makes sense," I replied, "I knew about him before I even met him, Em! And I don't know how it's even possible... This little microchip knows more about myself than I do!"
Beth frowned, "How'd you know about him before you met?"
"Shawn," I said simply, "Every holidays, he'd go on about his 'best pal, Chris' and how I just 'have to meet Chris'."
Em muttered just loud enough for me to hear, "Little did he know that you actually had dreams about his best friend, Chris."
"What about you, Em? Beeping for my brother?"
"He beeped for me first," she smirked.
Beth whined, "Oh, you're so lucky..."
"Ugh," I shuddered for the millionth time this week.
Whitney sat down quickly, with Bree on her heels.
Bree grinned, "What are you guys talking about?"
"Their future husbands," Beth grinned brightly.
"Excuse me," I made a face, "Em's future husband. My present annoyance."
"No," Em shook her head, "He might annoy you now, but eventually annoyance turns to Cupid for advice."
"I'm not going to end up with him, Em!"
"Yeah, you are," Whitney rolled her eyes, "You even dreamed about each other before you met."
I tensed, "Whitney? How did you know that?"
Whitney glanced at me in confusion, "Christian was speaking rather loudly to Dr Weston about it just then, over there," she pointed behind me, from the way she'd come.
I glared in that direction, where Christian was yelling something at Dr Weston. Everyone surrounding them was eavesdropping rather obviously.
I scraped my chair back loudly and marched towards the two, "Christian Park!"
He froze mid-yell and turned to give me a hesitant smile, "Natalie?"
"You are dead," I emphasised and pinned him with one arm across his chest to the wall, "You told everyone?!"
Christian paled, "Fuck."
"You've been shouting it clear as day," I growled, "And how dare you go to the doctors without me knowing! Any information you find out, I get to know, got it?"
Christian nodded minutely, "O-of course."
I stepped back from him and glared at everyone watching. Great... now they knew me as the weird girl that had dreams about a weird boy before they'd met.
I felt the heat rush to my cheeks and black danced across my line of vision. A wave of nausea hit me and I felt like a nice lie-down. I stumbled to the floor and curled up in a ball. Yeah... here was a good place to sleep. It was on the perfect, cold, hard ground.
A heard a few people shouting my name, but Dr Weston's voice was the clearest, "It's just a side-effect of the scanner. It happened last time too, I believe. Christian, help me take her up to the testing room."
I felt arms pick me up and I curled into the broad chest, "Park... that you?"
"Yes, Dove," he muttered.
I yawned quietly and then whispered, "I was happy... when you beeped for me... Thanks, dream-Park."
He froze, in the middle of walking and then continued, "No problem, dream-Nat."
I smiled with happiness and then fell into a deep, dark sleep.

He reached up and unclasped the back of my bra. My hands still wandered across his chiselled abdomen, in wonder.
Park murmured for the billionth time, "And you're sure?"
"Yes, Park," I whispered, against his skin, leaving light kisses along his jaw.
He peeled my shirt off my body, leaving the smallest time available so that he could go back to kissing me. He next took off my jeans, and I unbuttoned his shorts.
I murmured again, "I love you."
"And I... you," he said simply.
I pulled his shorts down, trailing kisses along his eight-pack, before returning to his mouth.
I heard the crinkle of foil and it suddenly became real. We were doing this.
Good. Because I wanted to.
