To a Friend
Aldakkour
A Tinuviel! Tinuviel! Another name to lose.
My captain! My dear captain! Another path you choose.
Your name I cry in the silenced night
A breath I sigh for your lost light
for your lost sight of kindness.
Mellon! Mellon! With eye akin to starlight
Once Dragon! Yet Dragon! With Dragon Heart you fight.
And so I named you, though of mortal forebears:
a friend!—and true, for we shared all cares—
for we shared our cares of darkness.
Back again! Back alone! Fallen into night
I cast your shadow, stepped your step! And, streaming down from lamp-light,
your joy I touched in the midnight air
your memory beneath the starlight there
and I cried your name—Honoratus!
Honoratus! Semper dignus! In this new path you tread,
a captain, a dear captain be to another friend instead.
But, if you are to remember me,
of your friendship not yet worthy;
if your kindness will permit,
I ask of you this gift—
let me thank you.
