1. Selene
I walked out of school after a tiring day. Ah, another day in the life of the blind. Sighing to myself, I made my way to the gate where Dad would be waiting for me. He started picking me up from school every day for the past few months.
"How was your day honey?", I heard a familiar tone ask.
"Oh, just the usual", I said, smiling. I heard my Dad sigh, as though in sympathy because he couldn't imagine what I must be going through.
To be honest, I didn't mind being blind. Of course, it changes the way you perceive the world and the way you think. But it's not necessarily a bad thing. Besides, I gave up my eyesight by choice. Of course, I won't complain about it.
"SELENE! MR.JONES!", came a loud voice, hailing us. I turned around in the direction of the voice. My teacher, Ms. Adams walked up toward us and talked to Dad about my progress in school. And before you ask, no, I don't go to a blind children's school.
Being 17, I was just a normal teenager. I went to a regular school. I loved music and dance. I loved learning new things. I loved to read. If I had to pick one thing that sucks about being blind, it would probably be that I can't read like I used to anymore. My parents love reading too and they're the ones who encouraged my habit of reading.
Speaking of family, I have a wonderful one. My parents are the most loving, kindly, and supportive people I've ever met. They're fun-loving and weird too... And they're a little obsessed with Greek mythology, which would explain mine and my sisters' names.
Selene was the goddess of the moon. The moon symbolizes eternity and enlightenment in the dark. A moon hanging high in the sky used to guide people through the night, till they reached their destination. This is exactly what I believe in. I wanted to be the silver lining amongst the dark clouds. I wanted to brighten people's lives. I wanted to shine as bright as the moon in the night.
I guess sometimes, the best we can do is be ourselves. But in order to be the best version of ourselves, we need to push towards being better. And that's what I try to do every day.
Going back to my family, I have a little sister named Iris. 'Iris' is Greek for Rainbow. 'Rainbow' pretty much explains everything about Iris. She brought joy into our lives. She's always energetic, I guess all 6-year-olds are. She runs about, jumping, chasing, dancing, and occasionally, crying.
All the way home, I sat and brooded about how my life was before becoming blind. I used to see the world as I pleased just 7 months ago. My, how times have changed...
On reaching home, I was greeted with a chubby pair of arms wrap around my neck and a high-pitched squeal "LUNA!". Luna, which also means moon, was Mom's nickname for me. Iris started copying her after a while.
I picked up my sister in my arms and embraced her tiny figure.
"Hey, Iris... how was your day?", I asked her, putting her down.
"Good... How was yours? Did you make any new friends?", she asked. Without waiting for my reply, she promptly started off again.
"Today... I built a castle out of Legos. Then I helped Mom bake your favorite cookies. Then I-"
I sat on the sofa, placed Iris on my lap, and listened to her chatter. Mom came in and stood at the doorway. How do I know? Well, I heard her come to the door and then the footsteps stopped.
When you're blind, you have to make do with the other senses you have. At this point, I can tell which family member is walking past me or even when someone is looking at me. It's become natural.
I felt Mom smile at me before coming up to me and hugging me.
"We made your favorite cookies... come have them", she said before pulling away.
It was at that moment that I realized, as long as I have my family: Iris, my Mom, and Dad... I was going to be fine. Doesn't matter if I can or cannot see... because I have them. I love my family and they love me.
Love comes from within, and you don't need eyes to see that...
