Chapter Six
Courtney opened the mailbox, finding a manila envelope sitting there. Her heart skipped a beat, knowing exactly what it was. The information about who Emma's biological parents were. She took the envelope and the rest of the mail out, closing the box, and went back inside. She and the boys were leaving that afternoon to meet them in Phoenix, Arizona. She finished packing Jude, Phoenix, and Ruth's things, and then finished with hers. They went to the airport later, and she had to try and get all three kids through security by herself. Thankfully, Jude and Phoenix behaved well enough for her to be able to handle it. When they got to the airport in Arizona, Luke and Emma were there, waiting.
"Dada!" Phoenix shrieked, running to him as Courtney laughed, and Luke grinned, scooping up the little boy.
"Hey, little man. Were you good for your mum?" He nodded, and Jude wrapped his arms around Emma's legs.
"Em!! Mama got mail for you." He said, smiling, and she looked up, startled.
"You do?" She nodded at her daughter, mouthing 'later'. They got their things, and headed for the arena. The show went well, and Jen and Seth, as well as John and Korey's kids, Alex and Xavier, were more than happy to help Courtney by playing with the boys or holding Ruth.
After the show, Emma, Luke, and Courtney sat in the back lounge, and Luke held the yellow manila envelope. Emma's heart was pounding, as that envelope contained the information about who her biological parents were.
"Are you ready, baby?" Courtney asked softly, placing her hand over her daughter's.
"Yeah. I'm ready. And no matter what, you two are still always going to be my parents." Luke smiled, and opened the envelope, scanning the paper. His breath caught in his throat, and he passed the paper to his daughter. She scanned it, and nearly passed out when she read it. Emma Lucy Cooper- Born June 10, 2001. Father- John Cooper, Mother- Korey Cooper. She looked up, and took a deep breath.
"Should.....should I tell them?" Luke shrugged slightly, looking down.
"I don't know. I would if I were you, but that's your choice. I'd recommend that you think and pray about it first. But your mum and I will support you either way." She nodded slowly, trying to keep her breathing steady. She'd been with her biological parents for the last eight weeks, and never even known it. About a week later, she stood in front of their bus door, the envelope in her hand. She knocked three times, and then Jen opened the door.
"Emma! Come on in. It's good to see you." Emma smiled, hugging the blonde drummer.
"Good to see you too. Are John and Korey here?" She nodded.
"Back lounge. Need to talk with them?" She nodded, and Jen pointed her back. She reached the doorway, and neither of them noticed her. She took a deep breath, and knocked on the door frame. John looked up, and smiled.
"Hey, Emma. Did you find out what you needed to about your biological parents?" She nodded, sitting down.
"Yeah. That's why I'm here. I thought you might also want to know." Korey looked confused, and Emma slid the paper over to her. She read it, her eyes widening and her breath catching in her throat. John looked at the paper, and he froze.
"You're my biological parents." She whispered, a tear trickling down her cheek. Korey shook her head slowly.
"How? We.....we thought...." Emma looked at her.
"That I was dead? I talked to the doctor. He risked his job to save me and get me into the system. He did lose his job, but he was glad he did the right thing." Korey blinked back tears that threatened to spill over, and John gently took Emma's hand.
"I'm sorry. We thought we were doing the right thing, but we weren't. I am glad you have Luke and Courtney, though. They deserve you more than we do. I know you probably won't ever forgive us, and we deserve that. But we are sorry, and we hope that you can forgive us." She nodded slowly, and John smiled sadly. She hugged each of them, and then took the papers, and headed back to the FK&C bus.
"How'd it go?" She saw Camryn, sitting on the couch.
"Shockingly, okay. They....they asked me to forgive them." Camryn smiled, and then started hacking. Emma waited until she finished, and sat down beside her cousin.
"Ugh....sorry. But isn't them wanting you to forgive them a good thing?" She shrugged, staring at the floor. Camryn put a hand on her shoulder, gently squeezing. She sighed slightly, and then spoke up again.
"Em, my dad was a drug addict, and my mom was an alcoholic who gave me up because I had cystic fibrosis when I was born. Your parents were scared, and yeah, they might've chosen to not have you in a different way, but your parents are sorry for it. They would change things if they could. My mom.....She dropped me on the side of the road, and didn't even care if anyone found me. She wouldn't apologize. Your biological parents.....They care enough to actually apologize. They do care, and they regret it. My mom's probably sitting in a bar, drunk right now, and my dad's probably with some girl a little older than me. Your parents are probably on the bus crying because of the mistakes they made." Emma looked down at her feet, tears trickling down her cheeks. Camryn placed a hand on her shoulder, speaking quietly.
"I can't tell you what to do, and I can't make you forgive them. I know they've hurt you, and you're still hurting, but you need to forgive them, and they need to know that you have. You're hurting yourself by not forgiving, and you're making them feel a whole lot worse. Don't you think they've had enough? Remember the song Lucy? They wrote that about you, Emma. Please. Forgive them." Then she stood up and left, leaving Emma all alone with her thoughts and tears. They poured down her cheeks, and she finally looked up, taking a deep breath.
"I can't yet." She whispered to no one in particular, the words almost hurting her.
"I'm sorry, but I can't forgive them yet."
